Francis, Elizabeth Jane. "An investigation into the validation of pedometers to detect foreleg steps in horses (Equus caballus) at walk and trot." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/11304.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Current research, surrounding motor laterality at a population level in horses, indicates that in order to stand with the left forelimb in advance of the other, it is achieved by taking a greater amount of steps with the left foreleg than the right foreleg (McGreevy & Thomson 2006; McGreevy et al. 2007); suggesting that pedometers could effectively estimate asymmetry of forelimb locomotion in grazing horses. This novel method of detecting forelimb preference also reduces the likelihood of operator influence and provides an inexpensive objective measure of vertical movement which has the advantage of scoring large sample sizes, avoids single-day anomalies by recording over multiple days and overcomes logistical challenges (Vincent & Sidman 2003; Chan et al. 2005; Silva et al. 2010; Warren-Smith & McGreevy 2010). However in order to determine the reliability and validity of this novel measure the relationship between pedometer data and those derived from direct observation will first need to be assessed (Warren-Smith and McGreevy 2010). Objectives: To determine: (1) if pedometers accurately record equine steps at walk and trot, when compared to video analysis, (2) if alternative positioning of these pedometers affected the accuracy of step detection when compared to video analysis. Method: Five horses each wearing a Yamax Digiwalk SW-200 (spring lever arm pedometer) and a Yamax Power Walker PW-610/611 (piezoelectric pedometer) positioned on the left foreleg (LF), left scapular (LS), chest (C), right scapular (RS) and right foreleg (RF) walked and trotted on a 20m circle 10 times on each rein to yield 100 results for each gait. Video recorded by GoPro Hero 3 Black edition camera positioned on the girth facing the forefeet using the following settings: 180 degree field of view, 720p, 120fps. Both visual and audio data were captured and recorded. Results: Kruskal-Wallis Test on the deviation from actual number of steps per unit for each type of pedometer and the position of the pedometer compared to the actual number of steps taken by both forelegs determined that there is a significant difference (H1= 340.31; P < 0.0001) between readings in walk and also in trot (H1 = 483.49; P < 0.0001). A further Kruskal-Wallis Test on the deviation from actual number of steps per unit for each type of pedometer and the position of the pedometer compared to the actual number of steps taken by individual forelegs determined that there is a significant difference (H = 403.36; p < 0.0001) at walk and also at trot (H = 477.10; p < 0.0001). Conclusion: In summary, the analysis of the pedometer data compared to video analysis indicate that pedometers are not useful for scoring forelimb movements in horses at walk and trot, regardless of positioning.

Abstract:
This thesis consists of three main parts. The first part of the master thesis looks at the identification of thruster dynamics and low speed ship dynamics. The relevant parameters identified are time constants and time delays in the system. Simple step tests are used for the identification. Different models for identification are suggested, both for uncoupled surge, sway, and yaw dynamics. Other test results, such as agility plots, DP 4 corner tests, and pure DP tests (stationkeeping) are reported. All the results are to be compared to similar tests performed after R/V Gunnerus has a retrofit of the thruster system. The second part discusses another problem, and that is the topic of numerically estimat- ing the body frame position of the GNSS and MRU sensors. For the GNSS position an Luenberger observer design and an adaptive scheme are proposed and analyzed. The es- timation designs are tested using numerical simulations and experimental data from the Gunnerus sea trials. A similar Luenberger observer is proposed for the MRU positions, and experimental data from the sea trials are used to test the observer. The third part discusses a hybrid augmentation of integral action. The motivation is a DP system, where typically the integral action is tuned very low to avoid oscillations due to the integral action. When there is a sudden load change, such as a ice load that hits the vessel, or if a mooring wire snaps, then a hybrid update augmentation could be useful, to speed up the convergence of the integral action. The update law is a linear update law based on the error in the states (the velocity for the DP system). The augmentation can significantly improve performance, especially for very large disturbance changes.

Abstract:
New technology in the automotive industry is the key to success. Therefore, it is appreciated when people come with new design ways to solve problems. This leads to innovation in the automotive industry that will lead to better and more environmentally friendly cars. This report presents a concept on a pushing counter lever spring which provides the same characteristics of force curve as a diaphragm spring in a pressure plate of a car has. The mechanism is to be used for long-term testing and evaluating clutch pedals. The work describes the development process and the manufacture of a prototype. The program Creo (CAD / 3D) is largely used to construct the components. As are the subprograms Mechanism Design and Simulate to simulate the movement and loads. Excel is a great help at the theoretical calculation of the mechanism and to evaluate the theory behind the concept. The result shows how to simulate a diaphragm spring in the pressure plate in a car for long-term testing of clutch pedals. The goal is to accurately mimic the force curve of a diaphragm spring, in order to design better pedals, and thus reduce the weight on the pedals to in turn reduce fuel consumption to protect the environment is one of the most important factors of all in the automotive industry.

Abstract:
Flash is the unwanted or excessrubber material that presents on the outersurface of themolded rubber product. This will affect the surface finish; it is a cosmetic defect andit can be removed. It forms because of the leak or the excess molded rubber materialbetween the surface of the mold, typically on the parting line, (Jordan Anderson,2014). The presence of flash will reduce customer satisfaction. There are manymethods to remove the flash. The method is selected according to the degree of flashextension and the location where it occurs. The project aims to design a semi/full automated machine, which helps for having asmooth and fine surface finish of the weight plates. These plates are made up of rubberfor the ELEIKO group. The weight plates have different weights from 10 to 20 kg,but the diameter of each plate stays the same, but the thickness will be different foreach plate. The machine should be designed that removes all the excess rubber andshould smoothen the outer surface of the weight. The purpose of this work is to gainknowledge about different product development methods, respective tools, andtechniques that are used. The machine should be user- friendly, should not becomplicated, should not damage the workpiece (marks or trace of the blade), shouldnot put the employer in danger, and economically feasible. This report presents the progress of designing of the product, product development, methods, and literature study. The designed model can construct in the industry fortheir problem they are faced by the flash. The model is very simple and unique so thateveryone can perform the task without any previous experience. Material alternativeswere evaluated as well as manufacturing possibilities. The designed machine was theoffered for free as means for further research and development. Abstract:
Investigations of specific and nonspecific interactions of biomolecules at liquid/solid interfaces are presented. To investigate specific multivalent ligand-receptor interactions, bivalent antibodies and haptens bound to solid supported membrane were used as models for ligand-receptor coupling. Novel microfabrication strategies, which included spatially addressed bilayer arrays and heterogeneous microfluidic assays, in conjunction with total internal reflection microscopy, was employed to achieve this goal. These high throughput techniques allow thermodynamic data of binding interactions to be acquired with only a few microliters of analyte and superior signal to noise. The results yield both the first and second dissociation constant for bivalent IgG antibodies with membrane bound hapten molecules. Studies were conducted both as a function of hapten density and cholesterol content in the membrane. Another research area of this dissertation is the molecular level description of nonspecific adsorption and displacement of the model protein, fibrinogen, onto hydrophilic surfaces. Techniques such as atomic force microscopy, immunochemical assays, fluorescence microscopy, and vibrational sum frequency spectroscopy were employed to probe this system. The results demonstrate that the protein's αC domains play the critical role. When fibrinogen is adsorbed to a hydrophilic surface via these moieties, its displacement rate in the presence of human plasma is approximately 170 times faster than when these domains are not in direct surface contact. Even more significantly, spectroscopic studies show evidence for highly aligned Arg and Lys residues interacting with the negatively charged substrate only when the αC domains make direct surface contact. The interfacial ordering of these residues appears to be the hallmark of a weak and labile electrostatic attraction between the substrate and the adsorbed macromolecule.

The findings of this study predict that students who utilize five specific sentence constructions on timed single-draft writing compositions will have higher holistic scores than students who do not utilize the specific constructions. Students in the treatment group who were taught to use the five constructions through thorough and consistent instruction in a semester length first year writing course showed statistically significant gains, 4.698 points on a 0-18 scale, based on comparison of pre-test and post-test writing samples. The findings suggest that specific style instruction at the sentence level should be part of the first year writing course curriculum, and possibly in the writing curriculum of secondary education as well.

Abstract:
As the energy efficiency of dishwashers continuously improves, differentmanufacturers need to find new innovative solutions to further improve thedishwashers. To do so one can divide the areas of improvement into 4 parameters, water temperature, washing time, chemical treatment and mechanical processing. In this thesis the focus lies on the mechanical processing and the washing time. The conventional spray arm of today's dishwashers sets its rotational velocitythrough the water pressure. To step away from this ASKO Appliances AB hasdeveloped a prototype with a motorized lower spray arm. The purpose of this studyis therefore to investigate how the motorized spray arm performs in terms of energyusage, wash results and sound. This when altering the factors water pressure, rotational velocity and washing time. To get reliable results with the least amount of tests, the methodology of Design ofExperiments was used through the software MODDE 7. A 3-level full factorialdesign was chosen. The three factors were varied in three levels -1, 0, 1 and fiveextra centerpoints were added resulting in a test schedule of 32 tests. To measurethe wash result a soiling method and an evaluation method was developed. Theresults of the executed test schedule was analysed through MODDEs in-builtregression model Multiple Linear Regression. The analysed test results showed that the wash time was the dominant factor forboth energy usage and wash result and the second most dominant factor was waterpressure. The rotational velocity had little to no effect on the energy usage and asmall effect on the wash result at a low water pressure but increasing effect for ahigher water pressure. The measured sound values were constant over time andincreased with both increased water pressure and rotational velocity. The optimalrunning conditions regarding wash result was investigated using MODDE and thentested. The optimal rotational velocity was the setting 1, the highest level, for allthree time settings. The optimal water pressure was in the mid to high region, andincreased with increasing wash time. The results from the three optimum tests for the prototype were then compared totests with a conventional dishwasher with a pressure driven spray arm. Theconventional dishwasher was runned with its normal running conditions for thethree different time settings. The prototype achieved a similar wash result as theconventional machine for the time setting -1 but slightly better for the time setting0 and 1. The energy usage for the prototype was a doubling of the conventionalmachines energy usage. The sound measurements were excluded due to muffelingdifferences between the machines

Massic, Jared Paul. "A Comparison of Instructional Strategies for Teaching Entry-Level Welding at the High School Level." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2016. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/5806.

Full text
Abstract:
The traditional method of teaching welding has remained unchanged for decades. In this model, an instructor gives demonstrations to a class of students and then helps them individually as they practice the techniques of welding. This traditional instructional method has been effective but is time consuming. Due to a significant increase in the demand for skilled welders within the United States, efforts have been made to develop more efficient methods of providing welding instruction. Various electronic welding guidance systems and virtual welding systems have recently been developed. In this study, the researcher addressed two questions 1) Does the use of an electronic welding guidance system improve the pass rate that entry-level high school students receive on basic gas metal arc weld tests? 2) Will entry-level high school students who learn gas metal arc welding with a guided welding training system learn how to weld faster and/or more proficiently than those taught using the traditional training method? A study was performed in an entry-level high school welding class to determine the effectiveness of a guided welding instruction system in comparison to the traditional method of teaching welding. The results of the study indicated that the traditional method of teaching welding and the use of a guided welding system yielded similar results, both in quality and efficiency, in student ability to produce basic GMAW welds.

Johnson, Pamela Christine. "Bicycle Level of Service: Where are the Gaps in Bicycle Flow Measures?" PDXScholar, 2014. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/1975.

Full text
Abstract:
Bicycle use is increasing in many parts of the U.S. Local and regional governments have set ambitious bicycle mode share goals as part of their strategy to curb greenhouse gas emissions and relieve traffic congestion. In particular, Portland, Oregon has set a 25% mode share goal for 2030 (PBOT 2010). Currently bicycle mode share in Portland is 6.1% of all trips. Other cities and regional planning organizations are also setting ambitious bicycle mode share goals and increasing bicycle facilities and programs to encourage bicycling. Increases in bicycle mode share are being encouraged to increase. However, cities with higher-than-average bicycle mode share are beginning to experience locations with bicycle traffic congestion, especially during peak commute hours. Today, there are no established methods are used to describe or measure bicycle traffic flows. In the 1960s, the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) introduced Level of Service (LOS) measurements to describe traffic flow and capacity of motor vehicles on highways using an A-to-F grading system; "A" describes free flow traffic with no maneuvering constraints for the driver and an "F" grade corresponds to over capacity situations in which traffic flow breaks down or becomes "jammed". LOS metrics were expanded to highway and road facilities, operations and design. In the 1990s, the HCM introduced LOS measurements for transit, pedestrians, and bicycles. Today, there are many well established and emerging bicycle level of service (BLOS) methods that measure the stress, comfort and perception of safety of bicycle facilities. However, it was been assumed that bicycle traffic volumes are low and do not warrant the use of a LOS measure for bicycle capacity and traffic flow. There are few BLOS methods that take bicycle flow into consideration, except for in the case of separated bicycle and bicycle-pedestrian paths. This thesis investigated the state of BLOS capacity methods that use bicycle volumes as a variable. The existing methods were applied to bicycle facility elements along a corridor that experiences high bicycle volumes in Portland, Oregon. Using data from the study corridor, BLOS was calculated and a sensitivity analysis was applied to each of the methods to determine how sensitive the models are to each of the variables used. An intercept survey was conducted to compare the BLOS capacity scores calculated for the corridor with the users' perception. In addition, 2030 bicycle mode share for the study corridor was estimated and the implications of increased future bicycle congestion were discussed. Gaps in the BLOS methods, limitations of the thesis study and future research were summarized. In general, the existing methods for BLOS capacity are intended for separated paths; they are not appropriate for existing high traffic flow facilities. Most of the BLOS traffic flow methods that have been developed are most sensitive to bicycle volumes. Some of these models may be a good starting point to improve BLOS capacity and traffic flow measures for high bicycle volume locations. Without the tools to measure and evaluate the patterns of bicycle capacity and traffic flow, it will be difficult to monitor and mitigate bicycle congestion and to plan for efficient bicycle facilities in the future. This report concludes that it is now time to develop new BLOS capacity measures that address bicycle traffic flow.

Full text
Abstract:
In this master thesis will be discussed the importance of changing generation inside the Italian family-run companies which are acting at international level. In particular the aim will be analysed the small-medium firms that during their growing process have decided to internationalize themselves towards Asia and specifically in China. The driver concepts of this thesis will be family, generation and internationalization. The family represents a very controversial point, since could be both a meeting or a detachment point between Chinese and Italian culture, so a deep analysis will be done. Moreover, family have to be analysed also as a conceptual feature that drive the managing process of a company, this latter not seen just as a profit machine, but intrinsic element of the family identity. Instead, the changing generation has to be seen as a needed key point in companies to stay alive and exploit new flows of idea and to continue the already existing path or to land in the international context, particularly in the Chinese one. Finally, internationalization point, has to be seen as a synonym of potential means of growth and expansion, maintaining anyway the firm’s family identity. To have a more concrete approach, in this thesis will be included also the interviews conducted on six small medium Italian enterprises which works in the field of wine and which exports this Made in Italy excellences towards China. This practical approach will be useful to compare the theoretical part explained in the first chapters to the operational side, in order to understand which strategies are the more effective and if there are a common thread that has led these firms to succeed.

Abstract:
Implementation of C++ and Matlab based control of University of South Florida's latest wheelchair-mounted robotic arm (USF WMRA-II), which has 9 degrees-of-freedom, was carried out under this Master's thesis research. First, the rotational displacements about the 7 joints of the robotic arm were calibrated. It was followed by setting the control gains of the motors. Then existing high-level programs developed using C++ and Matlab for USF WMRA-I were modified for WMRA-II. The required low-level programs to provide complete kinematics of the joint movements to the controller board of WMRA-II (Galil DMC-2183) were developed using C++. A test GUI was developed using C++ to troubleshoot the control program and to evaluate the operation of the robotic arm. It was found that WMRA-II has higher repeatability, accuracy and manipulability as well as lower power consumption than WMRA-I. Touch-Screen and Spaceball user interfaces were successfully implemented to facilitate people with different disabilities.

Abstract:

The exhumed, ~140 Ma, Halfmoon Pluton of Stewart Island, New Zealand is characterized by a sequence of mingled mafic sheets and enclaves preserved within an intermediate-felsic host, and provides a unique opportunity to directly investigate the physico-chemical processes that operate within an arc setting. Interpretation of mingling structures and textures in the field, in combination with extensive petrographic, geochemical and geochronological data, allow for conclusions to be reached regarding the nature of the mafic-felsic magma interactions, and the physical, chemical and thermal processes responsible for the generation and evolution of the calc-alkaline magmas. Detailed documentation and interpretation of mafic-felsic magma mingling structures and textures reveal that the Halfmoon Pluton formed incrementally as the result of episodic replenishments of mafic magma emplaced onto the floor of an aggrading intermediate-felsic magma chamber. Physico-chemical processes identified include fractional crystallization and accumulation of a plagioclase – hornblende – apatite – zircon mineral assemblage, episodic replenishment by hot, wet basaltic magmas, magmatic flow and compaction. Early amphibole and apatite crystallization played an important role in the compositional diversity within the Halfmoon Pluton. Variations in the style of magma mingling preserved within the magmatic “stratigraphy” indicate that processes operating within the chamber varied in space and time. Variations in mineral zoning and composition within hornblende indicate that the Halfmoon Pluton crystallized within a magma in which melt composition fluctuated in response to repeated mafic magma replenishments, fractionation, crystal settling and convection. Mineral assemblages, chemical characteristics, isotopic data and geochronological evidence indicate that the amphibole-rich calc-alkaline Halfmoon Pluton was emplaced into a juvenile arc setting, most probably an island-arc. Data are consistent with a model whereby ‘wet’ amphibole-rich basaltic magmas pond at the crust-mantle interface and episodically rise, inject and mingle with an overlying intermediate-felsic magma chamber that itself represents the fractionated product of the mantle melts.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to examine what affects the changes in credit spreads. A

regression model was performed where the explanatory variables were; volatility,

SP&500 index, interest-rate level the slope of yield curve and the dependent

variable was credit spread for each of CSUSDA, CSUSDBBB, and CSUSDB. We

found a positive correlation between these independent variables (Volatility, S&P

500index) and a negative correlation between interest-rate level and credit spreads.

These results were consistent with our hypothesis. However, the link between the

slope of yield curve and credit spreads was positive and that was inconsistent with

our hypothesis and some previous studies. The conclusion of this paper was a

change in credit spread is related to the variables that we used in our model. And

these variables explained about 50 per cent of this change.

Abstract:
Supported by the investment barriers removal, financial deregulation and improvedmacroeconomic policies during the last three decades, the process of financial integration inthose markets, emerging markets in general and emerging markets within Asia PacificEconomic Cooperation (APEC) in particular, has been pro-actively accessed these days. Moreover, recent trend in globalization in many APEC countries and especially in theemerging markets has triggered a stronger financial integration progress across countries.Nevertheless, it is surprising to find that these countries not only benefited from regionalfinancial integration but also experienced global financial integration in the same period.Markets over the last two decades, which have been highlighted by financial crises occurredamong those APEC emerging countries in the early of the year 1997, have raised political, social and economic questions. One of prominent questions among them: “Are emergingmarkets in APEC regionally or globally integrated?” has raised our interest in measuring theintegration level in these countries. Our thesis paper, therefore, seeks to answer the questionon the degree of financial integration level in nine APEC emerging countries. Collectingstock indexes from the Chile (Santiago Stock Exchange), China (Shanghai Stock Exchange),Indonesia (Indonesia Stock Exchange), Malaysia (Bursa Malaysia), Mexico (Mexican StockExchange), Philippines (Philippines Stock Exchange), Peru (Lima Stock Exchange), Russia(RTS Russian Stock Exchange), Thailand (Thailand Stock Exchange), we computeempirically the integration scores for these nine countries. We then compare the level ofglobal financial integration and regional financial integration for each market during theexamined time. Results of this study indicate that our nine sampling countries integrated indifferent levels. Not surprisingly when we conclude that the financial integration degree ofthose countries has not been stable over time due to various objective reasons that we alsoexamine through our literature review for individual market.

Abstract:
This paper discusses the issue of depersonalization and the subjective need for objectification and provides a means of understanding and developing a possible solution. Through the basic observation of an overlap between Behavioral Genetics, Neuroscience, Philosophy, Psychology, Physiognomy, the visual language and the artistic practice, one can begin to take note of the affects of our environments on an individualistic level. Through creative practice and the use of the visual language, one may develop an individualistic form of therapy. In recent years we have drifted away from the science of visual language and the basic aesthetic experience. The visual language and the basic aesthetic experience allow the depersonalized individual to engage in conversation and observation through an object of the visual language to the biological inner self as person. Through this conversation one may find comfort in the acknowledgment of the biological inner self as person from the other as person in hopes to subdue the subjective need for objectification. One may also gain a better understanding of the individualistic correlation between one's environment and one's biological inner self as person.

Abstract:
Empowerment, which has been described as both a means of effecting higher and more efficient quality work outputs and a means of facilitating greater freedom in the workplace combines elements of philosophy, psychology, and management theory. The perceptions of the present empowerment level of 3500 employees of a division of a major corporation were analyzed using data from an empowerment survey. The results were examined using correlational and factorial measures to test the structure of the survey. ANOVA and pair-wise comparisons were used to examine group differences on five subscales of the survey based on employee level in the organization. Significant differences were found in almost all categories. Rank order for the three levels differed from previous findings, perhaps due to empowerment thrusts.

Abstract:
We present in this thesis the various stages in the design of a microrobotics platform dedicated to the manipulation of micro/nano objects in a synchrotron environment. It is composed of dual micro/nano manipulators in order to handle and to maintain a micro/nano-sample through the focus of a X-ray or laser beam for material characterization and analysis. The main idea is to control and to drive in a robust way the micro/nanomanipulators by focusing the beam on the center part of the handled micro-object. A microgripper based on two Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) tips with integrated piezoresistive force sensors is proposed. First, the dual manipulators are controlled cooperatively by combining the different actuator dynamics to track a laser beam with nanometer precision. A robust control strategy based on H∞ control ensures a robust microhandling task under the focus of the laser beam whatever the external perturbations involved and parametric model uncertainties. The Genetic Algorithm (GA) approach is used to compute the parameter weighting functions in to obtain an optimal H∞ controller. Then, we propose to compensate the laser beam variations (thermal drift, mechanical variations) by estimating the position of the laser beam using stochastic estimators (Kalman and particle filters). To this aim, the maximum intensity of the laser beam is measured and tracked in real-time by a four-quadrant photodiode sensor. Finally, experimental results performed of micro-spheres (diameter: 8 μm) demonstrate the robustness of the robotic microhandling tasks using the proposed control scheme strategy

Abstract:
World sea levels are rising because of increasing levels of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere. This report aims to describe and analyze how the small, low-lying and vulnerable country of Singapore is planning for sea level rise (SLR). The ministries, authorities, agencies, secretariats etc. that are working with SLR questions are identified and the most important environmental documents with or without SLR are also studied. University and government researchers as well as other government personnel are contacted and asked questions in relation to SLR. The interview process was difficult because some people have signed agreements with the government that restrict them from participating in any activities. Planning for SLR is discussed from different points of view and numbers of possible sea levels are also discussed. Mostly they follow IPCC projections and they often refer to the assessment report 4 (AR4) where SLR is estimated to 0.18-0.59 m by 2100. They rarely refer to IPCC’s assessment report 5 (AR5), since the research for Singapore’s environmental documents was conducted before the release of AR5. The IPCC levels are mean sea levels and it is argued by one governmental researcher who is part of the study that these levels are not sufficient for planning purposes as it is the sea level extremes that are important to plan for. Seasonal wind, tides, waves and other factors all interact to affect sea level extremes at any particular location. Singapore is located in a particularly complex region and is therefore a complex country to plan for. The report concludes that Singapore needs a better strategy to share information, and authorities need to show their results in relation to SLR, and pass on their knowledge. This will help the whole world to reduce their impact and together, make it possible to create a sustainable world, minimizing climate change effects on Earth.

Robertshaw, Gary Steven. "What are the limitations in the gathering of individual-level consumer information for direct marketing purposes?" Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2005. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.417295.

Full text
Abstract:
The post-modern market is characterised by consumer individuality and eclecticism. Consumers are becoming time poor, better educated, sceptical of advertising, less brand loyal, have more product and service choice and expect personalised levels of service. Essentially, the fragmenting post-modern market has led to a breakdown in the behavioural consistencies previously associated with age, income and occupation, forcing companies to increasingly respond to customer needs on an individualised basis. At the same time, the conditions created by the advent of post-modernism have become a source of competitive advantage for the direct marketing industry given its unique ability to communicate and interact with consumers on a personalised level. Unrivalled levels of product and service customisation, improvements in customer satisfaction, increased customer retention rates, extended lifetime values, the development of customer relationship programmes and the identification of up-selling and cross-selling opportunities are being made possible. This represents a paradigm shift away from mass marketing methods towards a more consumer focused approach, with the result that it has now become both possible and profitable to customise products and services according to the needs of individual customers. A review of the literature, however, reveals that the limitations associated with the gathering of individual-level consumer information, upon which personalised marketing programmes rely, have received little attention. Using 256 personal interviews and a nationally representative, proportionally stratified sample frame combining quantitative and qualitative research methods, this study identifies, quantifies and provides an understanding of these limitations within one allencompassing framework. A number of case studies and hypothetical models are provided that demonstrate that the limitations associated with the gathering of individual-level consumer information have \..A significant and widespread implications for the efficiency of the direct marketing effort and company profitability. A consumer-centric understanding of the concept of data protection is provided, and the level of data protection concerns and prevalence across different consumer groups is quantified. An enhanced insight into the manifestation of data protection concerns with respect to consumer propensity to disclose, omit and falsify personal information is provided. An understanding of the interrelationships and underlying reasons for consumer abstention from the voluntary disclosure of personal information for direct marketing purposes, and omission and falsification of such disclosures is presented. This is supported by quantification of the availability, completeness and reliability of individual-level consumer information and the hypothetical implications for direct marketing practice. Contributors of personal information for direct marketing purposes are shown to be significantly different from abstainers, indicating that individual-level consumer information is biased and prompting a re-appraisal of current customer profiling and data appending practices. Values variance across and within demographically defined groups is demonstrated, confirming the inadequacy of extant direct marketing data gathering techniques and calling for the inclusion of a wider range of consumer classification schemes. The contention of this study is that the combined availability, completeness, reliability and usefulness of individual-level consumer information is significantly limited, thereby constraining the evolution of relationship marketing programmes, interactive communications, pennission marketing and other forms of personalised marketing strategies that exploit the phenomena of post-modern market fragmentation. The new insights imparted offer a better understanding of the manifestation of data protection concerns and implications for the gathering of individual-level consumer information, suggest a number of solutions for improving companies' ability to gather such information coupled with several testable predictions, and provide a revised model contributing to the development of direct marketing theory.

Ronnie, Roger. "Why are there so few minimum service level agreements? A case study of a metropolitan municipality." Master's thesis, Faculty of Law, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/30810.

Full text
Abstract:
In terms of the South African Constitution, every worker has the right to strike. This right is regulated in the Labour Relations Act. Workers engaged in essential services are prohibited from striking. The prohibition does not apply if a minimum service level agreement, guaranteeing services in the event of a strike, has been concluded between employers and trade unions. The Essential Services Committee, established under the Labour Relations Act ( the Act), must ratify these agreements before they become effective. More than two decades after the LRA was promulgated, very few ratified minimum service level agreements have been concluded in the municipal sector. This study explores the reasons for this and suggests legislative and policy interventions that could be considered on a sector wide basis. The study is by way of a single-case study of a metropolitan municipality. Data were obtained from two sources: 14 semi-structured interviews with participants and from an analysis of documents relevant to the regulation of essential services. The study established that the legislative framework for regulating essential services in South Africa is consistent with the principles and decisions laid down by the International Labour Organisation. It however does not provide guidelines for determining minimum service levels. An apparent unevenness between the representatives of the negotiating counterparts exists in the municipal sector in South Africa. Many of the party representatives negotiating minimum service levels, do not work in designated essential services or possess relevant technical skills. The findings of the study suggest steps that could be taken to strengthen the capacity of the Essential Services Committee to assist parties in the municipal sector to conclude minimum service agreements and build the negotiating capacity of the parties. The study also makes recommendations regarding improved participation by essential service workers and the broader community in the process.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is based on data regarding the social, economic, and demographic characteristics of 130 countries, and uses fixed effects estimation for the model analysis. It demonstrates that tourism development represents a complex process, which requires the implication of a multitude of stakeholders. Macroeconomic factors, such as GDP per capita growth and economic openness, are having a positive impact because they benefit private ownership and motivate people to open tourism-related businesses. Overall, higher carbon dioxide emissions and worse safety are having a negative effect over tourism development. Human development factors, such as education, are generally beneficial to the long-term tourism growth because they serve as positive externalities. Clustering the initial dataset based on various economic, demographic and social factors brought several new conclusions. Particularly, GDP per capita growth is not an important tourism development factor among developed countries, whereas the dummy variable for the year 2010 is a substantial one. Education and economic freedom are particularly important regressors for post-socialist states. The former is also crucial among African countries and in the Latin American region, where safety has also an essential impact over tourism development. Finally, tourism in small states would benefit the most from lower emissions, whereas in big states the best strategy for the policymaker would be to increase safety measures.

"Contribution à l'étude tridimensionnelle in vitro et in vivo de la cinématique et des bras de levier musculaires du rachis cervical supérieur: modélisation musculo-squelettique par infographie." Abstract:

d’une évaluation fonctionnelle in vivo.

This thesis concerns 3D kinematics analysis of the upper cervical spine (UCS) and computation of the posterior suboccipital muscle moment arms as well the development of different methods contributing to anatomical modeling and motion representation. The first part of this work is focused on the kinematics of flexion extension, axial rotation and lateral bending of the UCS. Two protocols were developed and applied in anatomical specimens, one to analyze discrete movements in different attitudes of upper cervical spine and the second concerned instantaneous motions. In addition to usual range of motion data, orientation and position of helical axes was computed for each motion type and UCS joint segment.

In the second part, we were interested in posterior suboccipital muscle biomechanical properties, particularly in the study of moment arms. Two different calculation methods were used, each showing different results from a quantitative point of view but quite similar in quality. Finally, we used these methods to assess their feasibility for in vivo functional assessment. The latter showed a concordance of kinematic results compared to the above studies, offering insight and clinical perspectives. In addition, musculoskeletal modelling 3D could also contribute to understanding of the kinematic features of upper cervical spine disorders.

Abstract:
Resonators are one of the most important parts of electronic products. They provide a stable reference frequency to ensure the operation of these products. Recently, the electronic products have the trend of miniaturization, which rendered the size reduction of the resonators as well [1]. Better design of the resonators relies on a better understanding of the crystals' nonlinear behavior [2]. The nonlinearities affect the quality factor and acoustic behavior of MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical-System) and nano-structured resonators and filters [3]. Among these nonlinear effects, Drivel Level Dependence (DLD), which describes the instability of the resonator frequency due to voltage level and/or power density, is an urgent problem for miniaturized resonators [2]. Langasite and GaPO4 are new promising piezoelectric material. Resonators made from these new materials have superior performance such as good frequency-temperature characteristics, and low acoustic loss [2]. In this thesis, experimental measurements of drive level dependence of langasite resonators with different configurations (plano-plano, single bevel, and double bevel) are reported. The drive level dependence of GaPO4 resonators are reported as well for the purpose of comparison. The results show that the resonator configuration affects the DLD of the langasite resonator. Experiments for DLD at elevated temperature are also performed, and it was found that the temperature also affects the DLD of the langasite resonator.

Abstract:

This qualitative study explores the level of satisfaction of parents regarding early identification/intervention services for children who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH). The purpose of this study is to compare the progress of children who are D/HH with their hearing peers on elements used to measure the readiness of students to enter the first grade as measured by teacher and parental perception/satisfaction. This study will include a qualitative exploration of assistive strategies and parental choices regarding early-intervention services, amplification, and modes of communication. Furthermore, it will provide and analyze data concerning teacher and parent perception of the relative success of the various pre-school interventions for children with hearing losses.

The study employs a qualitative case-study methodology using an in-depth guided-interview format to collect data. Participants include four families of children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Triangulation of data sources is achieved through guided in-depth interviews with parents, document review, verbatim transcripts of all interviews, and personal observations. The findings reveal levels of functioning for children who are D/HH upon entry into the school system through the end of their kindergarten year and levels of parental satisfaction concerning their choices made about early-intervention services prior to their children's entry into the school system.

Abstract:
A 40 kW transferred arc plasma melter was designed and built for the vitrification of nuclear waste. Borosilicate glass, high silica glass and sphene glass-ceramic were successfully melted with the waste using an argon plasma in both batch and continuous transferred arc plasma melters.
The use of both direct heating and indirect heating were examined in the continuous plasma melter. The loss of total glass weight and the elemental losses of Na, Cs, U and Nd were examined as a function of operating conditions. The losses of Cs during melting were from 25 to 73 wt% and depended on operating conditions. The loss of Cs during melting could be minimized by decreasing the plasma power, increasing the feed rate, using indirect heating rather than direct heating and choosing suitable waste form.
A heat transfer model and a mass transfer model were developed to analyze cesium losses during melting.

Kuo, Hsiao-Ching. "How You Categorize Influences How Helpful You Are: The Effect of Categorization Mindset on Consumers’ Social Decisions." Scholar Commons, 2015. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/5722.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation demonstrates how categorization mindsets (introduced by Ulkumen et al., 2010) moderate the altruistic behavior of consumers in decisions that have consequences to others besides oneself. Categorization mindset refers to a way of thinking about options, and is induced by simple sorting or categorization tasks. Ulkumen et al. (2010) has shown that mindsets can be unidimensional (in terms of being focused on a single, salient dimension) or multidimensional (in that both salient and non-salient dimensions are processed). Across three experiments, this dissertation finds that a multidimensional mindset (compared to a unidimensional mindset) enhances the preference for other-oriented options among highly altruistic individuals, but enhances the preference toward self-oriented options among less altruistic individuals. An investigation of the process underlying the results reveals that the interaction between mindset and altruism results from what we describe as the “breadth of processing route.” This route suggests that multi-dimensional mindsets activates a comparative mode since both salient (self-outcome) and non-salient (other-outcome) dimensions are processed simultaneously, while unidimensional mindsets activate a non-comparative mode given that only the salient dimension of self-outcome is processed. The dissertation concludes with a discussion of the substantive and managerial implications along with suggestions for future research.
