Holmstrom, Ashley Nicole. "Improving the Care of Patients with Urinary Catheters Through a Quality Improvement." ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/5723.

Full text
Abstract:
Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) significantly increases patient morbidity and mortality, length of stay, and organizational cost. In the 2 years prior to project implementation, the incidence of CAUTI increased by 15% in the local acute care, inpatient facility that served as the project site. Nursing leaders at the project site linked the increase in CAUTIs to a nursing knowledge deficit related to CAUTI prevention principles. The clinical question focused on the impact of CAUTI prevention staff training on the incidence of CAUTI, length of stay, and cost to the local acute care organization. After a review and critical appraisal of the literature, using Lewin's theory of planned change and the Iowa Model of Evidence-Based Practice Change, an evidence-based, CAUTI-prevention training program was piloted as a quality improvement initiative. The project purpose was to evaluate that initiative by tracking the incidence of CAUTI for 90 days postintervention. A 1-sample t-test of the mean incidence with a 95% confidence interval revealed no statistically significant (p = .732) decrease in the incidence of CAUTI. Similar initiatives with fewer than 12 months of evaluation data have failed to demonstrate statistically significant findings; therefore, additional data are needed to adequately assess the impact of the project. Recommendations include extending the pilot project and additional training of unlicensed nursing personnel. Proper evaluation of the project may provide support for the implementation of CAUTI-prevention training programs, promoting social change by reducing the rate of infection, improving patient outcomes, and demonstrating financial stewardship of the local acute-care organization.

Wi, Sungwook. "Impact of Climate Change on Hydroclimatic Variables." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/265344.

Abstract:
The conventional approach to the frequency analysis of extreme rainfall is complicated by non-stationarity resulting from climate change. In this study significant trends in extreme rainfall are detected using statistical trend tests (Mann-Kendall test and t-test) for all over the Korean Peninsula. The violation of the stationarity for 1 hour annual maximum series is detected for large part of the area especially for southwestern and northeastern regions. For stations showing non-stationarity, the non-stationary generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution model with a location parameter in the form of linear function of time makes significant improvement in modeling rainfall extremes when compared to the stationary GEV model. The Bartlett-Lewis rainfall model is used to generate annual maximum series for the purpose of generating the Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) curve. Using 100 sets of 50 year synthetic annual maxima, it is found that the observed annual rainfall maximum series are reasonably represented by the model. The observed data is perturbed by change factors to incorporate the climate change scenario from the WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) regional climate model into IDF estimates. The IDF curves for the future period 2040-2079 show highest estimates for all return periods and rainfall durations. The future IDF estimates show significant difference from the IDF estimates of the historical period (1968-2000). Overall, IDF curves show an increasing tendency over time. A historical and future climate simulation is evaluated over the Colorado River Basin using a 111-year simulation (1969-2079) of the WRF climate change scenario. We find the future projections show statistically significant increases in temperature with larger increases in the northern part of the basin. There are statistically insignificant increases in precipitation, while snowfall shows a statistically significant decrease throughout the period in all but the highest elevations and latitudes. The strongest decrease in snowfall is seen at high elevations in the southern part of the basin and low elevations in the northern part of the basin.

Abstract:
We are today facing an industrial revolution called Industry 4.0. Earlier in the human history, we have seen multiple industrial revolutions, but only after they actually happened. This is the first time we can see that an industrial revolution is on its way. Witht his knowledge, we have the chance to prepare for this large‐scaled technological change that we are standing in front of. Because of the impact that earlier industrial revolutions had on organizations, we can assume that Industry 4.0, as well, will impact and change work, tasks and the organizations themselves; especially when it comes to new high‐tech knowledge and skills that need to be learnt. Implementation, change, and high‐tech learning, together with a constantly running production can be stressful for anyone involved. For this reason, the purpose of this study is to come up with solutions on how you can facilitate the implementation of Industry 4.0, for employees and in an organizational point of view. We do this by conducting a literature study as well as interviewing organizations within the Swedish manufacturing industry. The structure of the analysis is built upon Lewin’s Three‐stage Model of Change. Here, we discuss and present solutions according to the stage in which they fit during the change process. Additionally, we investigate the concept of gamification as a tool to facilitate change. From our research, we conclude that motivation and engagement are keys in a technological change project such as Industry 4.0. Involvement, transparency and clarity are important aspects to make employees engaged throughout the project. Additionally, we present practical solutions for how organizations can educate their employees within Industry 4.0 techniques, as well as increase their motivation and engagement.

Skepe, Siphelo. "Evaluation of the applicability of Lewin's force field analysis in the implementation of the Financial Sector Charter at Standard Bank." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1006775.

Full text
Abstract:
According to the Financial Sector (FS) Charter, in August 2002, at the NEDLAC Financial Sector Summit, "the financial sector committed itself to the development of a Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) charter. It made this commitment, noting that: "Despite significant progress since the establishment of a democratic government in 1994, South African society remains characterised by racially based income and social services inequalities. This is not only unjust, but inhibits the country's ability to achieve its full economic potential. BEE is a mechanism aimed at addressing inequalities and mobilising the energies of all South Africans. It will contribute towards sustained economic growth, development and social transformation in South Africa. Inequalities also manifest themselves in the country's financial sector. A positive and proactive response from the sector through the implementation of BEE will further unlock the sector's potential, promote its global competitiveness, and enhance its world class status". Parties of the Financial Sector Charter agreed on the seven pillars below: 1) Human resource management - provide resources to develop skills of black people with the aim of increasing black participation in all levels of management in the sector. 2) Procurement policies - implement a targeted procurement strategy to enhance BEE. 3) Enterprise development - improve the level of support provided to BEE companies in all sectors of the economy. This would be achieved through skills transfer, administration and technical support. 4) Access to financial services - provide affordable financial services to the previously disadvantaged groups and making sure financial services are accessible to these groups. 5) Empowerment financing - work closely with government and government financial institutions to increase resources for empowerment financing. 6) Ownership in the financial sector - 25% of shares in each party of the FS Charter should be owned by black people by 2010. 7) Corporate social investrnent (CSI) - Each financial institution will have to spend 0.5% of their after-tax profit on corporate social investment projects. The projects should be targeted at black groups with a strong focus on transformation. The research evaluates the applicability of Lewin's Force Field Analysis (a change management model) in the implementation of the Financial Sector Charter at Standard Bank of South Africa. It attempts to achieve this by looking at how the Financial Sector Charter is being implemented at Standard Bank. The research looks at three main areas: 1) The "context" of the research problem, by seeking to understand Standard Bank's understanding of the FS Charter, the importance of implementing the FS Charter by the bank, the progress made thus far in the FS Charter implementation and comparison to the BEE scorecards of the other three main bank. 2) The "process", i.e. how the FS Charter is implemented in the bank, the driving and restraining forces of successful implementation of the FS Charter and the lessons learnt. 3) The "outcome" , i.e. benefits of implementing the FS Charter and what could be done to ensure that change management processes are successfully implemented. Personal interviews were used to discover other valuable information which was not available on the bank's published documents, and other related sources such as the Financial Sector Charter document. The sample size for the study was ten Standard Bank employees from different areas of the bank who are either senior managers or directors, in the bank. Internal publications available on the Standard Bank intranet such as the bank's employment equity plans, and the bank's sustainability reports from 2004 to 2011 (Standard Bank, 2004-2011) were analysed for the purpose of the study. The researcher also analysed public documents such as the bank's annual financial reports, bank's equity reports and internal publications on related topics of the research question. Lewin's Forces Field Analysis (FFA) points out that in any environment where change is required; there are both driving and restraining forces that influence the implementation of a change programme. The FFA is a valuable change management tool at trying to transform the behaviour of an individual, and this will lead to transformation of groups and, ultimately the organisation. It also helps to establish the balance between the driving and restraining forces of the change programme. Lewin's (1951) theory put forward the idea that change occurs in three stages: the first stage of change is unfreezing; the second stage is moving and lastly, the third stage is refreezing. In the unfreezing stage, the bank's change management initiatives would need to be directed at giving the individuals a desire and motivation to be ready and open about a planned change initiative. This could be achieved by clearly communicating why change is important, benefits of change and the compelling reasons for change. In moving, the bank would need to give support and confidence to the people affected by change in order to start accepting and buying-in to new perspectives, which enable them to realise that change will improve the current situation. In the refreezing stage, the bank would need to ensure that new patterns of behaviour are reinforced. This will ensure that the changes are applied in everyday business, and this helps create a sense of stability, where those affected by change feel comfortable and confident with the new approach of doing things. The research concludes that managers should recognise the sensitivity around transformation, and should always try to ensure that change management initiatives directed at transformation are unifying, fair and transparent. This should be done to avoid a situation where an employee (or prospective employees) and other stakeholders feel under-appreciated or overlooked because of their gender or race. This demands a carefully crafted and implemented change management programme, whose results will not only unify the bank's employees, but also create a competitive edge for the bank. Lewin's Force Field Analysis (FFA) model is a change management tool that could be used to produce such results.

Schneider, William Joel. "Transtheoretical Model of Change with couples." Diss., Texas A&M University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/441.

Full text
Abstract:
The Transtheoretical Model of Change is intended to be a general model of change that can be applied to many populations and domains of change. However, most of the studies that have investigated this model have focused on addiction-related topics or on individual psychotherapy. The current study explored whether this model's predictions applied to couples and their readiness to change their relationship. Data from two samples were collected. The first sample consisted of 65 volunteer couples recruited from the community. The second sample consisted of 55 couples that participated in a 9-week relationship enhancement seminar. Factor analyses of questionnaires designed to measure the stages of change and processes of change predicted by the Transtheoretical Model of Change did not produce the hypothesized factors. In general, use of change processes did not predict change in relationship satisfaction. However, there was some evidence that wives' use of change processes had more impact on relationship satisfaction than did husbands' use of change processes. Couples at higher stages of change tended to experience greater improvements in marital satisfaction than did couples at lower stages of change. Couples with partners at similar levels of readiness to change did not experience greater improvements in marital satisfaction than did couples at dissimilar levels of readiness to change. In general, couples using the processes of change that matched their stage of change did not experience greater changes in marital satisfaction. However, as predicted by the Transtheoretical Model of Change, use of consciousness raising processes was less helpful for couples at higher stages of change than for couples at lower stages of change. Reasons for the failure to support many of the claims of the Transtheoretical Model of Change are explored and suggestions for future research are provided.

Abstract:
Managing engineering changes is a critical task for organizations to remain competitive. In a manufacturing organization there are innumerable engineering change requests. This thesis is focused on the development of an information model that defines the engineering change process. This research developed an activity model in IDEF0, an object model in IDEF1X and a dynamic model using state diagrams. The activity model captures the business process for executing an engineering change in terms of its constituting activities and sub-activities. The object model defines each object and its attributes identified in the activity model. The dynamic model captures the status change of each object in the engineering change process. This study concludes with a summary, implementation issues and future work that can be done in the direction of implementing a system based \ on the information model developed.

Swearingen, Robert. "The Ship of Change: A Model for Organizational Diagnosis and Change Management." Diss., North Dakota State University, 2019. https://hdl.handle.net/10365/31717.

Full text
Abstract:
Grounded in developmental theory, the Ship of Change provides a renewed look at diagnostic relationships between organizational elements, and their interactions through the lens of a metaphorical ship analogy. Elements are identified and arranged based on empirical studies from the field with causal considerations emphasized by Burke-Litwin. The model uses a two-tiered visual perspective to depict multi-dimensionality that links core organizational elements to work unit activities through the interplay of culture, communication and climate. The model is intended for both the conveyance of principles related to open systems theory, and the practical application of diagnosing organizations for planning and implementing change. The model was tested in a case study with a transportation company using multiple methods data collection including a communication satisfaction survey, workplace observations, and employee interviews. The model was used to categorize and interpret data and to inform recommendations for change.

Abstract:
The main goal of the master thesis is design and implementation of information system for monitoring purposes. The implemented monitoring system will be able to automatically monitor devices of a certain company. This goal is preceded by strategic analysis using PEST and 7S methods for examination of current state of the company. Another part is the analysis of the efficiency of service processes using the HOS method together with the selection of a suitable monitoring system. An enhancement of service processes is designed by the Lewin model. Finally, the selected information system for monitoring was designed, implemented and tested. A deployment of the system should provide simplification of devices supervision, to save costs as well as to speed-up the response-time to unexpected situations.

The industrial domain is experiencing relatively a higher growth rate than other Internet-ofThings (IoT) market domains. Much as a lot is said about its technological capabilities andapplications, less has been said about the business side, and specifically how business modelsfor IIoT are changing currently. This paper seeks to explore how industrial IoT business modelsare changing the key drivers in the now. Some of the key finding include the fact that thischange is expressed most within the value proposition, collaborations and partnerships, newskill sets, internal departmental convergences etc. The key drivers are mainly bothtechnologically and market driven with mostly reasons of IIoT adoption being cost cutting andefficiency in operations. It is also found out that standardization and regulations also play akey role but only to arbitrate (issue like privacy security, ownership interoperability etc.) whathas or is already been put to service, in most of the cases e.g., The General Data ProtectionRegulation (GDPR).

Juntunen, M. (Marko). "Business model change as a dynamic capability." Doctoral thesis, Oulun yliopisto, 2017. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9789526216621.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of this study is to explore the role of dynamic capability in business model change in Internet-based business start-ups and Internet-based business enterprises. This study reviews the literature on business models, business model change, and dynamic capability, and defines business model change as a dynamic capability that is expected to lead to increased speed of business change and competitive advantages over the long term. This empirical study of business model change is accomplished by the case study method. The study is based on field data of four case companies regarding entrepreneurs’, business developers’, and business leaders’ behavior and actions while they are utilizing the business model concept for the purpose of business change. This study approaches business model change as a dynamic capability from three dynamic capability cluster perspectives. It explores how businesses can use the concept of business model for business decisions as well as how they can use the concept of business model to improve the speed of business change after new business opportunities or threats are found. The analysis identifies the process of business model change and factors that affect business model change, and the outcomes are results from three dynamic capability clusters that Internet-based companies are able to follow in a fast-changing business environment. This study develops a posteriori model proposing that a dynamically capable business model change consists of sensing, seizing, and transforming activities to obtain successful business and competitive advantages over the long term. A posteriori model of business model change as a dynamic capability creates a framework to support a quick business model change, especially in a fast-changing business environment. This study adds a dynamic capability viewpoint to the business model literature pertaining to business modeling and business model change. Regarding the managerial implications, this study shows how entrepreneurs and business owners can utilize the concept of business model in order to support a quick business change and possibly gain a competitive advantage in the long term. The study results indicate that internal and external factors for business model change are company-specific and those vary between the start-up and enterprise. And thus, a successful business model change can be achieved through analyzing and further developing these company-specific factors. These factors can be seen as a micro foundation of dynamic capability, and development of these factors can improve competitive advantage

Abstract:
The goal of this study is to build a global reduced-complexity model of coupled climate-economy-biosphere interactions, which uses the minimum number of variables and equations needed to capture the fundamental mechanisms involved and can thus help clarify the role of the different mechanisms and parameters. The Coupled Climate-Economy-Biosphere (CoCEB) model takes an integrated assessment approach to simulating global change. While many integrated assessment models treat abatement costs merely as an unproductive loss of income, the study considered abatement activities also as an investment in overall energy efficiency of the economy and decrease of overall carbon intensity of the energy system. The study shows that these efforts help to abate climate change and lead to positive effects in economic growth. Due to the fact that integrated assessment models in the literature mainly focus on mitigation in the energy sector and consider emissions from land-use as exogenous, the global climate-economy-biosphere (CoCEB) model was extended by adding a biomass equation and the related exchanges of CO2 and used to investigate the relationship between the effects of using carbon capture and storage (CCS) and deforestation control, and the economy growth rate. These measures are found to reduce the impacts of climate change and positively affect the economy growth. These results remain nevertheless sensitive to the formulation of CCS costs while those for deforestation control were less sensitive. The model developed brings together and summarizes information from diverse estimates of climate change mitigation measures and their associated costs, and allows comparing them in a coherent way

Abstract:
In 2012, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reported an estimated 686,000 victims of child abuse and neglect. Forty-nine states reported a total of 1,593 fatalities. This quantitative research study examined the relationship between the variables: age of child, gender of child, age of parent/caregiver, prior substantiated reports of abuse, and incidents of abuse in Philadelphia at the Department of Human Services using risk practice model (RPM) and safety practice model (SPM). Although child welfare practitioners have examined the relationship between family and societal factors that affect child abuse; few researchers have examined the correlation between service delivery practice models and incidents of abuse. The findings of this quantitative study examined 34,761 components of variable data from the Department of Human Services revealed that the age of the child, age of the caregiver, and incidents of abuse are statistically significant predictors of abuse, whereas the gender of child had minimal effect on incidents of abuse. The most accurate predictor of child abuse is prior substantiated reports of abuse. The study shows that reports received in 2007 using the RPM were 9.6% more likely to have a valid report; likewise, every report received during the years 2007 and 2012 increases the probability of a valid report by 94.2%. Development of a comprehensive assessment tool that combines the principle tenets of both RPM and SPM is recommended. The implications for social change include developing a practice model that can increase safety probabilities while diminishing incidents of abuse by using a more comprehensive assessment tool.

Full text
Abstract:
The nature of professional expertise has been widely debated in the literature. However it has been examined primarily from a dichotomy of perspectives - either from an experiential or a cognitive focus, without the attempt to integrate these, and other aspects of expertise, into an integrated and coherent model. This research is structured in two sections. The first part incorporates a philosophical discussion, which advances an integrated model of professional expertise. The second part uses a case study focused on the field of medical imaging to illustrate and refine the model. Ten professionals identified as experts in the various sub-specialties within medical imaging were guided through a sustained period of interviews and logging of critical incidents in order to elicit in-depth data in relation to the process of expertise. Findings showed that while expertise is situated in the context of practice, it incorporates several dimensions working together in an integrated, seamless fashion through the medium of the individual practitioner. The proposed model integrates five main aspects, namely: knowledge base; cognitive processes; internal integrative processes; interpersonal relationships; and professional practice. That is, it is a synthesis of a particular knowledge base, the cognitive processes, personality and internal processes of the practitioner. It manifests through, and builds on, interpersonal relationships with clients and other professionals, and is expressed through the actual doing of professional practice. It is through the reflexive examination of practice and management of change that professionals may transform these five integrated aspects into the qualitative state of expertise. One of the implications of these findings for higher education are that institutions providing professional education need to value all the dimensions of expertise and their effective integration in order to promote the learning required to advance professionals towards this level of practice.

Udoh, Ofonimeh Sam. "Environmental change, strategy formulation and restructuring : a connecting model for change in local government." Thesis, University of East London, 2002. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/3556/.

Full text
Abstract:
While central government has always used legislative means to bring about change in local authorities, the scope and scale of this imperative has changed significantly in the recent past. Thus, rather than just setting the framework within which local authorities operate, legislation has become increasingly prescriptive. Examples of the most recent legislation introduced include: The Local Government Acts, 1988, 1992, 1999, 2000, The Local Government (contracts) Act 1997, The National Health Services and Community Care Act 1990, The Local Government and Housing Act 1989, The Education Reform Act 1988, The Local Government Finance Act 1988, The Rates Act 1984, The Housing Act 1980 and The Local Government Planning and Land Act 1980. There is a widespread assumption in local authorities that in order to meet the growing demands of legislative changes, they have to become ever more strategic. The shift to strategy formulation as opposed to monolithic planning has been problematic because the reality of implementation is often underestimated. Strategy is a direction or a pattern of decisions, which aims for a fit between the organisation's internal capabilities and its external environment. The concept draws a line between formulation and action. The problem with this approach is that it fails to link implementation simultaneously into the process of formulation. This means that the key consideration of discursive practices is largely ignored. This research has examined and developed a historical analysis of change in local government with particular emphasis on government legislation and has examined how local authorities have responded to legislative-driven change through strategy formulation and implementation. The primary data for this has been based on in-depth interviews and a large sample survey of local authorities in England. For this purpose, five local authorities have been studied in order to identify the extent to which they have been able to implement existing and emerging legislation by relating key processes adopted in their strategy formulation and implementation to their achievements. The in-depth case studies have been followed by a detailed quantitative study encompassing data collected from 265 respondents from local authorities in England together with existing and emerging government statistics. This research has culminated in a connecting model, which shows the interrelationship that exists between legislative environmental change, strategy formulation and implementation and discursive practices. This connecting model provides a framework that help explain not only the process of change at the strategic level, but also how legislation will be interpreted, implemented and the degree to which it is likely to succeed or fail.

Hall, Alice A. "Tacit Culture and Change: A Model of Change Constructed From Institutional Assumptions and Beliefs." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/30565.

Full text
Abstract:
Higher education today faces a conflict between increasing societal demands and decreasing budgets. Innovation and change in higher education occur in the face of limited institutional resources. Meeting the challenges confronting colleges and universities is best accomplished by applying planned change efforts that recognize tacit culture (underlying assumptions and beliefs) and incorporate these cultural components into the change process. To date, however, change theory in higher education provides limited insight into institutional culture and how culture interacts with change. This is complicated by the fact that there are very few acknowledged methods for revealing tacit components of culture in higher education. This study provides the fields of change theory and institutional culture with, first, knowledge about revealing culture in higher education and, second, a model of change grounded in a single institution’s assumptions and beliefs. Using a variation of Sackmann's (1991) open-ended, issue focused interview method for uncovering tacit components of culture in corporate organizations, this study reveals cultural assumptions and beliefs about a planned change project in a two-year community college. Further, a model of change is constructed from the revealed assumptions and beliefs that explains the role of this tacit culture in the probable outcomes of the change project.

Bedser, Mark Bernard. "An assessment of change readiness prior to significant organisational change." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1001870.

Full text
Abstract:
This research paper is broken up into three sections, namely an evaluation report, a literature review and research methodology. The evaluation report section is the assessment of the current state of change readiness within the Eskom Contact Centre’s based upon what the literature on change readiness prescribes. The timing of the change readiness assessment is just prior to significant organisational change. The organisational change that was about to be initiated by the organisation was initiated from the boardroom of the most senior echelons of the organisation, and was directed in a top down approach, being a strategic organisational change. The change is deemed to be critical to the organisation being able to meet its long term strategic and sustainability objectives. A critical examination of the literature explored the meaning of change readiness, the importance of it and explained the consequences for organisations that commit to transformational agendas without being ready. Key concepts such as such resistance to change and organisational inertia are described and differentiated from change readiness. The ADKAR change model and its change readiness assessment instrument were used due to the organisations preference for the model. The ADKAR model formed the framework for the analyses of the data, the discussion of the results and the recommendations to the organisation. The research conducted was quantitative in nature; a questionnaire was distributed to the employees of the seven Eskom Contact centre sites around the country through an email. A slightly modified version of the ADKAR change readiness questionnaire was sent via email with an on-line questionnaire link on it; and questions on individual readiness for change were used to assess the level of readiness of the employees. Most of the descriptive and inferential statistics were analysed with the use of Excel (version, 2010), with Factor Analysis being done in research showed that: - The factors as proposed by the ADKAR change readiness assessment questionnaire (i.e. Awareness, Desire, Knowledge, Ability and Reinforcement) are not different enough to be considered as independent factors for this data set. Based on factor analysis, the factors were subsequently amended from five to three, namely Readiness, Opportunity Realisation and Uncertainty. - The Contact Centre employees were somewhat ready for change. - The Contact Centres needed to focus on all amended ADKAR factors in order to improve the readiness of the department. - The readiness levels in response to the roll out were more or less uniform. The study shows that given Eskom’s preference for the ADKAR model, future research within Eskom should therefore be conducted more circumspectly with respect to ascertaining the validity of the ADKAR factors. The study also makes mention that future work and/or research will need to be conducted, specifically on the readiness of the organisation itself, in order to improve the probability of transformational success. The ADKAR assessment is a people focused assessment and therefore focuses only on the readiness of the individual. Factors such as the adequacy of the current state of resources within the organisation, which incorporate aspects such as infrastructure, technology and staffing, will also need to be assessed to make a more holistic statement of change readiness. A concise review of the literature is incorporated into the Evaluation Report of Section 1 to underpin the study. In Section 2 a more extensive review of the literature is presented. Similarly, the design of the research is discussed in more detail in Section 3 to both describe and justify the appropriateness of the research methodology, and to give a detailed account of the way in which the research was carried out.

Abstract:
With the arrival of the digital age, faster internet speeds, and greater storage capacities in our computers, digital piracy is on the rise. Neither the illegality of piracy nor the unethical nature of doing so has stopped people from partaking in the act. Studies show that tens of billions of dollars of pirated goods are downloaded every year, yet our policies fail to solve the issue of digital copyright infringement. The biggest issues contributing to the problem are the lack of a policy that consumers take seriously in combination with some digital goods being too expensive in their current state of distribution. This thesis is aimed at taking a direct approach to reduce digital piracy from two different angles. The first angle deals with the incentive structure of society and the need for a government backed policy that has legitimacy in the view of United States citizens and the second angle is the creation of an alternative distribution model for digital software as a service based platform.
