Abstract:
AbstractThe aim of this paper is to promote an explicit and active development of digital-lexicographical competence in foreign language teaching. The results of two online surveys conducted as part of the research project DICONALE-COMBIDIGILEX in connection with the teaching and learning process of German as a foreign language (= DaF) provide a comparative insight into the behaviour and attitude of both teachers and learners of DaF on the topic “Use of lexicographical resources in the process of DaF-acquisition”. The evaluation of the surveys shows, that the digitallexicographical competences in the process of DaF-acquisition must be promoted more intensively, since the existing lexicographic offer is not optimally used for teaching purposes both on the part of the teachers and on the part of the learners. To this end, the following three main lexicographical competences will be examined from a methodological-didactic and application-oriented perspective: (i) Adequate selection of the electronic resource regarding the communicative situation, (ii) development of disambiguation strategies for reception in L2 or translation from L2 and (iii) development of strategies for production and translation into L2. This research will ultimately lead to a debate on the use of the dictionary in the digital environment in the DaF-teaching and discuss its actual influence on the learning process.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper presents an empirical study investigating the relationship between first language (L1) lexical organisation and second language (L2) vocabulary development. The participants consisted of 191 native Arabic learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) within higher secondary education in Saudi Arabia. To conduct the study, two receptive vocabulary size tests (L1 Arabic-Lex and L2 English X-Lex) were used with an L1 lexical organisation test (ALOT) which was designed for the purpose of the study. Learners' L1 lexical organisation scores were found to be associated with their L1 and L2 receptive vocabulary scores. However, the strong correlation found between lexical organisation and the size of the lexicon in learners’ L1 might well suggest that lexical networks and the size of the lexicon are one unified system. Nevertheless, to find any potential interaction between L1 lexical organisation and size on L2 vocabulary acquisition, ‘moderation’ analyses were performed. Moderation results revealed three levels of interaction; low, average and high. The low level shows that a low level of lexical organisation leads to low levels of L1 and L2 vocabulary size. The same relationship trend was logged for average and high levels. These results thus emphasise the importance of a well-structured L1 mental lexicon on L2 vocabulary acquisition

Abstract:
Helicobacter pylori NCTC 11637 lipopolysaccharide (LPS) expresses the human blood group antigen Lewis x (Lex) in a polymeric form. Lex is β-d-galactose-(1-4)-[α-l-fucose-(1-3)]-β-d-acetylglucosamine. Schematically the LPS structure is (Lex) n -core-lipid A. In this report, we show that Lex expression is not a stable trait but that LPS displays a high frequency (0.2 to 0.5%) of phase variation, resulting in the presence of several LPS variants in one bacterial cell population. One type of phase variation implied the loss of α1,3-linked fucose, resulting in variants that expressed nonsubstituted polylactosamines (also called the i antigen), i.e., Lex minus fucose; LPS: (lactosamine) n -core-lipid A. The switch of Lex to i antigen was reversible. A second group of variants arose by loss of polymeric main chain which resulted in expression of monomeric Ley; LPS: (Ley)-core-lipid A. A third group of variants arose by acquisition of α1,2-linked fucose which hence expressed Lex plus Ley; LPS: (Ley)(Lex) n -core-lipid A. The second and third group of variants switched back to the parental phenotype [(Lex) n -core-lipid A] in lower frequencies. Part of the variation can be ascribed to altered expression levels of glycosyltransferase levels as assessed by assaying the activities of galactosyl-, fucosyl-, andN-acetylglucosaminyltransferases. Clearly phase variation increases the heterogeneity of H. pylori, and this process may be involved in generating the very closely related yet genetically slightly different strains that have been isolated from one patient.

AbstractThe increasing usage of shortened forms in everyday spoken and written English can prove to be a substantial challenge for EFL learners at any level, both in terms of decoding and, albeit maybe to a lesser extent, encoding. This article takes a learner-based approach and assesses the needs of the learners, maps their lexicographic search routes via the outer access structure, and at the microstructural level it critically analyses the lexicographical portrayal of selected types of shortened form in three of the online English monolingual learners’ dictionaries (OMLD). A number of particular learner’s issues thereby arise and proposals for improvements to the outer and inner access structures in order to facilitate usage, to prevent waste in terms of lexicographic information costs and to enhance the acquisition of encyclopaedic knowledge are posited.

Abstract:
AbstractThe growing number of people learning Chinese as a second language (CSL) appears to precipitate an increasing demand for Chinese dictionaries for international learners (CDIL). However, many of these dictionaries are not accepted by Chinese learners around the world. This paper, starting with the status quo and the current challenges of the CDIL, attempts to highlight the role of culture-specific constructs (CSCs) in compiling dictionaries for learners from various perspectives. The discussion is directed to the inseparable relationship between CDIL and Chinese CSCs from the viewpoint of cultural differences, the characteristics and classification of CSCs in the light of cultural anthropology and lexicography, as well as the culture enhancement in entry-word selection and definition according to the characteristics of second language acquisition and users’ dictionary needs. Finally, based on the analysis of the CSCs extracted from the Chinese-Related English Corpus, the translational definition method and principles of the CDIL are proposed. In addition, the conceptual integration mechanism for cross-cultural memetic calque of CSCs is profiled with practical instances drawn from the Corpus.

Abstract:
<p>The commented judgement concerns the taxation of acquisition of immovable property by inheritance division. In the applicant’s opinion dissolution of co-ownership is not an acquisition of assets if it is within the share which the former co-owners had in the common property and was carried out without any repayments or surcharges. If the acquisition of one-half of the property occurred upon the death of the testator, but through the subsequent abolition of co-ownership, the applicant acquired nothing more than what he already owned, the abolition of co-ownership does not constitute an acquisition and has no tax consequences. According to the tax authority, this position is incorrect. The applicant acquired half of the share in the property by way of inheritance and division of inheritance and a half share in the property by way of abolition of co-ownership. The administrative courts have held that the tax authority’s position is incorrect. In administrative cases, it may be necessary to use external systemic interpretation and reference by the administrative authorities to the relevant provisions of civil law. In the Supreme Administrative Court’s opinion, point of the dispute in this case is based on the conclusion what date should have been taken as the date of acquisition of the property (interest in the property). Resolution of this issue required a detailed analysis of the provisions of the Civil Code. Although, not all relevant issues have been considered by the Voivodeship Administrative Court, the decision of the court of first instance is in fact lawful. The gloss is approving and declares that the position taken in the judgement of the Supreme Administrative Court is correct.</p>

Abstract:
<p>Recent decade has been prominent in investigating third language acquisition (L3). This study presents an Optimality theoretic account of French wh-question by learners whose first and second language are Persian and English respectively. Additionally, it investigates transfer at the initial stage based on the three dominant transfer hypotheses namely, L1 transfer hypothesis, L2 status factor, Cumulative Enhancement Model (CEM) in the domain of L3 acquisition. First, in French and Persian wh- question structure, the wh-word move to pre subject position (Spec-CP & Spec-FOCP) but the interrogative verb do not raise to C. This is the indicator of L1 Factor hypothesis. Second, in French and English the wh-word follows by an interrogative verb in French or by subject-auxiliary inversion in English so in these languages the wh-word occupies the Spec-CP and the verb occupies the C position. This is an evidence for L2 status factor. Third, in English and Persian the wh-word remains in original position for echo questions, this feature triggers this parallel structure in French; this confirms Cumulative Enhancement Model hypothesis. Two groups of Persian native speakers with different English proficiency levels (the lower-intermediate & advanced) that were at the initial stage of acquiring L3 French were asked to complete two test namely, grammar judgment task and translation test. The results showed that the main source of transfer was L1 transfer hypothesis and partially CEM. Regarding OT, although the advanced learners transferred their L2 knowledge in the L3 acquisition in GJT, there was not any significant difference between L1 transfer and L2 transfer context. Therefore, the following constraint hierarchies were obtained for TT and GJT respectively, Q-Scope>> Lex-V>Stay>>Q-Mark and Stay>>Lex-V>>Q-Mark>>Q-Scope. In fact, these ranking, particularly the former one, advocated the L1 transfer hypothesis.</p>

AbstractIn decision no. 3 Ob 249/18sOGH [2019] 3 Ob 249/18s. the Austrian Supreme Court (Oberster Gerichtshof, OGH) acknowledged a security right in a movable asset acquired abroad, although publicity requirements under Austrian law have not been observed before and after the movable asset crossed the Austrian border. Consequently, only the law of the country in which the movable asset is located upon the completion of the acquisition or loss shall be applicable to the acquisition or loss of a right in rem. Whether the transaction has been completed or not, is determined by the lex causae. No subsequent change in the applicable law occurs in relation to this question. The decision is analysed in this paper in the context of the former jurisprudence of the Austrian Supreme Court, which has been overturned by the present decision, and the positions published to date in legal literature. In addition, this paper provides an overview including aspects relating to EU law, the debate regarding overriding mandatory rules and fraus legis.

Abstract:
In order to understand the functioning of mining in ancient Rome, it is necessary to investigate the rules of classical and post-classical Roman law related to mines. Most of the mining information is extracted from the Lex Vipasca, the two bronze plates found in Aljustrelo in Portugal in 1876 and 1906. The first plate from Aljustrelo provided valuable information on the mining sale taxes, the auctioneer’s provision, the management of baths, shoemakers, barbers, metallurgy workers, mining waste tax, teachers and seizure of mines and receivables. The second plate from Aljustrelo defines the responsibilities of the procurator, the rights and obligations of the owner, the price of the mine, and tells us about the way of organizing the leaseholders in societies – societas. From the preserved provision of Codex Theodosianus (CTh.X.19.8.) we learn about the existence of specially separated rights related to the mining and exploitation rights. The aim of our work is, through analysis of the Aljustrelo plates, to show how far Roman law has defined all aspects of mining in detail and to show the functioning of the system starting from the formation, acquisition of property, business, control, disputes, and associated activities that were formed with mines. These two plates with Roman mining laws provide an inexhaustible study-basis for lawyers, as well as others dealing with Ancient Rome. In addition to the mentioned Lex Vipasca, some minor and later mining regulations have been briefly outlined to complement the picture of Roman mining law.

Abstract:
Using an in vitro expansion and differentiation system for human CD34+ cord blood (CB) progenitor cells, we analyzed the induction and expression kinetics of the granulomonocyte associated lysosomal proteins myeloperoxidase (MPO), lysozyme (LZ), lactoferrin (LF), and macrosialin (CD68). Freshly isolated CD34+ CB cells were negative for LZ and LF, and only small proportions expressed MPO (4% +/- 2%) or CD68 (3% +/- 1%). Culturing of CD34+ cells for 14 days with interleukin (IL)- 1, IL-3, IL-6, stem cell factor, granulocyte-macrophage colony- stimulating factor (GM-CSF), and G-CSF resulted in on average a 1,750- fold amplification of cell number, of which 83% +/- 7% were MPO+. Without addition of GM-CSF and G-CSF, lower increases in total cell numbers (mean, 211-fold) and lower proportions of MPO+ cells (54% +/- 11%) were observed. The proportion of MPO+ cells slightly exceeded but clearly correlated with the proportion of cells positive for the granulomonocyte associated surface molecules CD11b (Mac-1), CD15 (LeX), CD64 (Fc gamma RI) CD66, or CD89 (Fc alpha R). At day 14 MPO+ and LZ+ cells were virtually identical. However, at earlier time points during culture (days 4 and 7), single MPO+ or LZ+ cell populations were also observed, which only later acquired LZ and MPO, respectively. Maturation of cells into the neutrophilic pathway was indicated by the acquisition of MPO, followed by LZ. In contrast, maturation of cells into the monocytic pathway was indicated by the acquisition of LZ followed by MPO and CD14. CD68 was found to be expressed at day 4 by the majority of cells and was not restricted to the granulomonocytic cells, as cells with megakariocytic (CD41+) or erythroid (CD71hi) features were CD68+. LF expression was observed only in GM- plus G-CSF- supplemented cultures, in which only 26% +/- 5% of cells expressed LF by day 14.

This replies to Block 2019 (B19), which responds to Lester 2014 (L14). The main issues in the, varyingly sized, sections are as follows. 1 Further explanations of critical rationalism, the theory of liberty, and problems with the non-aggression principle. 2.1 The relationships among law, morality, and libertarianism. 2.2 The objective invasiveness of low-level radiation and that it is, therefore, a proactive imposition (albeit trivial) if someone inflicts it on non-consenting people. 2.3 The objective and subjective aspects of proactive impositions; and how clashes can be resolved. 2.4 How liberty relates to risk and self-ownership. 2.5 Libertarian initial acquisition versus absolute property rights by labour-mixing. 2.6 Organisational note. 2.7 Libertarianism and mens rea. 2.8 Libertarian rectification versus lex-talionis doubling. 2.9 Indirectly clashing rights, self-preservation, trespasser-hiker, flagpole-grasper, and landmine-layer. 2.10 A logical point is not a moral point. 2.11 Pacifism and libertarianism. 3.1 A weak criticism of utilitarianism. 3.2 Hedonometers; approximate interpersonal comparisons of utility imply libertarianism; what a libertarian is; libertarian rankings. 4. Libertarian philosophy versus propertarian dogma. Coda: the need to take seriously the philosophical problems with propertarian-justificationist libertarianism. Readers that might be interested include those engaging in libertarian philosophy and those using the Rothbardian/Blockian theoretical approach to libertarianism.

Abstract:
In the wholesale financial markets, enormous exposures are collateralised by interests in immobilised securities. Such collateral may be provided under a security interest, or by way of outright transfer.1 The collateral taker is always concerned to ensure that its interest in the collateral assets will be enforceable, not just against the collateral giver but also against third parties such as other creditors of the collateral giver. This is particularly important in the insolvency of the collateral giver, in order to ensure that the collateral taker ranks above ordinary creditors. Rights in assets which bind third parties are generally characterised as property rights, and the general approach in conflict of laws is to refer questions concerning the acquisition of property rights to the law of the place where the asset in question is located, or lex situs. In relation to interests in immobilised securities, this simple rule presents a challenge in practice, as the location of interests in immobilised securities may not be immediately obvious. This article suggests that the legal location of such interests is the office of the clearing system where the account recording such interests is maintained. This accords with the provisions of Article 9(2) of the Finality Directive, which has yet to be implemented in the United Kingdom.

Abstract:
This paper deals with certain issues of private international law that Serbian notaries public must resolve when performing notarial duties in the process of the conclusion of a contract whose subject matter is the acquisition of rights in REM in immovable property located abroad. The author first deals with the question of whether Serbian notaries public have international jurisdiction to perform notarial duties with regard to these contracts. After that and bearing in mind that the governing law for these contracts is, pursuant to Art. 21 of Serbian Private International Law Act (SPILA), the law of the foreign state in which the immovable property is located, the author tries to clarify whether the notary public applies the rules of this applicable foreign law on the form of the contract or must comply with lex fori (domestic) rules on the form (which are, from the point of view of Serbian notaries public, of procedural nature). Finally, the author explains how, from the point of view of private international law, the notary public should proceed when concluding the contracts on exchange of two immovables, one of which is located in Serbia and the other in a foreign country, given that in such case the conflict-of-law rule of Art. 21 SPILA refers to two applicable laws - Serbian (domestic) law and foreign law.

Abstract:
One of the basic tools of the capital market are securities. Under the currently valid and effective legislation, ownership of securities can be acquired through three types of scrambling contracts. It is a contract for the purchase of securities, a contract for the donation of securities and a contract for the loan of a security. These contract types are primarily regulated in the Securities Act as the “lex specialis” of securities law, with subsequent reference to the legal regulation contained in the Civil Code and the Commercial Code. The authors are focused on a donation of securities lending of securities, which are used in practice only a little, or even at all. For this reason, no attention is paid to them either by legal theorists. The authors, through scientific and doctrinal interpretation, examine the selected provisions of the Securities Act, the Civil Code and the Commercial Code relating to the issues of these agreements. Through professional literature and court decisions, they are looking for answers to practical application problems. Last but not least, they compare legal regulations in Slovakia and the Czech Republic and point to the differences. The study of the selected issues related to the acquisition of securities in the conditions of the Slovak Republic represents the main objective of this contribution, which affects also the area of economics or financial management. Priority, however, is in the area of financial law with significant transitions to civil and commercial law.

Abstract:
Purpose This study aims to investigate how new CEOs’ previous experiences in other organizations and other industries create value in acquisitions. Drawing on the upper echelon perspective, this study theorizes that the multiorganizational experience of new CEOs is positively associated with acquisition performance and, in particular, that the multi-industry experience of new CEOs leads to better performance in diversifying acquisitions than in related acquisitions. While new CEOs without multiorganizational experience undergo a cognitive entrenchment in firm-specific experience, new CEOs with multiorganizational experience can lead acquisitions with more flexibility and agility. Design/methodology/approach Acquisition and organizational data were drawn from the US manufacturing industries (SIC 20-39) between 2008 and 2010. The event study method was used to test hypotheses. In 346 acquisitions made by 139 firms, acquisition performance was measured according to cumulative abnormal returns. Findings Consistent with the hypotheses, the multiorganizational experience of new CEOs was positively associated with acquisition performance and, in particular, the multi-industry experience of new CEOs led to better performance in diversifying acquisitions than in related acquisitions. Originality/value This paper contributes to the CEO literature and acquisition literature by suggesting that the multiorganizational experience of new CEOs can be a valuable source of competitive advantages, particularly when implementing corporate strategies involving interorganizational integration processes.

Abstract:
PurposeWe address the following research questions: (1) Is the innovation trajectory of the acquirer affected by previous acquisitions? (2) In which direction knowledge recombination from the acquisition is pushed further? (3) Is the technological acquisition more a means for knowledge exploration and radical innovation or, on the contrary, a way for consolidating previous technological specialization?Design/methodology/approachThe nature of this study is exploratory; therefore, we opted for an inductive approach based on the L'Oréal case study analysis. Data were triangulated from different sources: (a) the L'Oréal website and press releases collected in the 2009–2015 period; (b) journal articles and books on the global cosmetics industry and the insightful work of Jones (2010); (c) the Questel Orbit database containing data on patents; and (d) the Zephyr – Bureau van Dijk database containing information on the acquisitions of firms.FindingsEmpirical evidence from a patent data analysis reveals a paradoxical path. On the one hand, acquisitions enable the company to explore new technological spaces; on the other hand, they allow it to reinforce a preexisting technological trajectory, even when the knowledge base of the target is distant from that of the acquirer. Thus, in our case study, the absorption and recombination of knowledge from a variety of domains support specialization more than diversification technology strategies.Originality/valueWe add to innovation management literature a new perspective, by offering a detailed analysis, through patent data, of the knowledge recombination process, led by technological acquisitions.

Abstract:
Corporate acquisition success can be influenced by many factors, e. g. financial performance of acquirer or target firm, market reaction, rumors, contract clauses etc., having either negative or positive effects. The aim of this study is to investigate the role of target’s financial performance in acquisition process and its influence on acquisition success. Research scope of the study is narrowed to BRICS companies, where lack of experience and intensively growing economies led to a growth in M&A deals number. The study uses the accounting-based approach that implies calculation of combined ROA change to measure acquisition performance and answer the posed research question. Based on 70 acquisition deals data collected from Bureau van Zephyr, Refinitiv Eikon and SPARK, the research relies on building logistic and OLS regressions in order to observe long-term effects of various parameters influencing acquisition success. The results of this study suggest that acquisitions affect combined financial performance of the companies negatively, on average, but they are more successful if the target company was making losses prior the deal than if the target had sufficient financial health. In addition, we revealed that cross-border and crossindustry factors positively influence the performance of the deals. The paper contributes to the literature as it focuses on both the fact of the acquisition success or failure and its numerical expression, therefore it helps to investigate the impact of variables on the result. In addition, it highlights the reasons why the acquirers in BRICS quite often make deals with loss-making targets.

Using data from the American Community Survey, we find that island-born Puerto Ricans on the U.S. mainland, as U.S. citizens, may have lower incentives to learn English than Hispanic immigrants because of their higher participation in LEP disability programs. However, among Mexican immigrants, recent immigration reform aimed at interior enforcement might have increased incentives for Mexican immigrants to learn English to reduce their probability of detection, if speaking English proxies for undocumented status.

Abstract:
Land acquisition often involves power and displacement and can be carried out on a large scale. There are many forms of land acquisition, including for environmental and conservation purposes as well as for production activities. While green grabbing has joined land grabbing as an environmental justice issue of concern, it is not necessarily the case that all green land acquisition is large scale, done by powerful outsiders, or leads to displacement and exclusion. The outcomes of green land acquisition are dependent on the mechanisms used, the adequacy of resettlement and/or compensation, and the social and environmental context in which it happens. We discuss the outcomes of community-led land acquisition for conservation purposes in Costa Rica. We considered a special case of green land acquisition done by local civil society to defend the forest and water resources of the Juan Castro Blanco National Water Park in Costa Rica. We used the literature on green grabbing, social ecological systems, and social innovation to discuss local environmental governance and regional sustainable development. This paper makes a fresh contribution to environmental planning and environmental governance by bringing in aspects of green land acquisition that have not been previously explored.

Abstract:
This paper aims to examine the trends of Chinese high-tech acquisitions in the EU countries, describe the policies that these acquisitions prompted on the level of member states and the EU, and analyze the effects of these policy responses. The results of the research review clearly show an increasing number of takeovers of European companies in the high-tech sectors, especially in the big member states such as Germany, France, or the UK. This created a backlash from the European policymakers that led to an introduction of tighter screening regimes in many EU member states and the creation of a common EU framework for FDI screening and its strategic management. At this point, it is hard to evaluate the complete effect of this new framework, but it must be concluded that 82 percent of the Chinese strategic acquisitions made in 2018 would fall under at least one criterion of the new EU framework. The findings of this paper provide sound recommendations for the EU countries and their public authorities targeting to control Chinese outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) and limit the acquisition of local companies in sensitive industries. On the other hand, the coming recession may put at least a temporary halt on Chinese acquisitions of the European companies. Abstract:
Novel social media collaboration platforms, such as games with a purpose and mechanised labour marketplaces, are increasingly used for enlisting large populations of non-experts in crowdsourced knowledge acquisition processes. Climate Quiz uses this paradigm for acquiring environmental domain knowledge from non-experts. The game’s usage statistics and the quality of the produced data show that Climate Quiz has managed to attract a large number of players but noisy input data and task complexity led to low player engagement and suboptimal task throughput and data quality. To address these limitations, the authors propose embedding the game into a hybrid-genre workflow, which supplements the game with a set of tasks outsourced to micro-workers, thus leveraging the complementary nature of games with a purpose and mechanised labour platforms. Experimental evaluations suggest that such workflows are feasible and have positive effects on the game’s enjoyment level and the quality of its output.

Abstract:
In mid-2003, SingTel was at a key point in its history. The last decade had seen dramatic changes, as SingTel transformed itself from a Singapore-based government-owned telecommunications firm with no foreign operations and no domestic competition, to a credible regional competitor. By 2003, SingTel had invested more than $20 billion in substantial international operations in East and South Asia, Australia and Europe, and had survived perhaps the biggest collapse the telecommunications industry had ever suffered. SingTel was confident enough for its CEO, Lee Hsien Yang, to claim that the firm was "the leading communications company in Asia". Yet there were many doubts about its performance. SingTel was accused of lacking a clear strategy in its overseas ventures, of having overpaid for several of its overseas acquisitions, and most significantly, of having destroyed shareholder wealth. This case presents a brief outline of the main trends in the global and Singapore telecommunications industry and discusses SingTel's efforts to regionalize, with a focus on the Optus acquisition. The case ends with a call to evaluate the success of SingTel's regionalization efforts, in particular the Optus acquisition, and to discuss what SingTel's strategy should be for the future.

Full text
Abstract:
Due to the low signal power, the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signal is vulnerable to interference and even cannot be captured or tracked in harsh environments. As an alternative, the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite has been widely used in the navigation field due to the advantages of low cost and strong signals. It is becoming a significant component of the new combined navigation system with GNSS. The combination of an LEO Doppler signal and GNSS observables can improve the positioning accuracy and high-precision positioning convergence time of the GNSS receiver. However, the GNSS signal receiving capability cannot be improved from this data fusion level. We propose a novel assisted structure where GNSS signal acquisition and Doppler tracking are assisted by LEO Doppler positioning. The receiver uses the LEO signal to achieve Doppler positioning firstly. Then, the coarse position with the GNSS navigation messages received from LEO, as well as the estimated clock information, is used to assist in the acquisition and tracking of GNSS. In this way, the GNSS receiver’s sensitivity can get the benefit from this integrated system. The paper presents the structure of the assisted receiver and analyzes the assisted GNSS signal acquisition and carrier tracking performance in detail. Simulation experiments of this assisted structure are carried out to verify its superiority of acquisition and tracking sensitivity in comparison with standalone GNSS receivers. Theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the proposed acquisition method can achieve 90% detection probability at a carrier-to-noise ratio (C/N0) of 15 dB-Hz, which is about 8 dB higher than the conventional acquisition method without assistance; the proposed tracking method can track weak signals of 5 dB-Hz, which is about 4 dB higher than the conventional method. Therefore, this novel LEO-assisted receiver has significantly improved weak signal acquisition and tracking sensitivity.

Abstract:
Proton density (PD) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) are imaging techniques that enable the acquisition of data from living subjects that can be used in the fine-tuning of subject-specific models’ architectural parameters. The aim of this study was to determine the in vivo 3D architectural parameters (volume, pennation angle, fiber length and physiological cross-sectional area) of the gastrocnemius medialis, gastrocnemius lateralis, soleus and tibialis anterior muscles using proton density and diffusion tensor imaging data before and after an exhaustive one-legged jump exercise. These methods were used in the in vivo 3D data acquisition of six young and physically active female subjects’ lower legs, followed by a fiber-tracking algorithm and analysis tools. No significant differences were found in the muscles’ architecture after the exercise, with the following exceptions: the anatomical cross-section area of the gastrocnemius medialis increased (p-value 0.001, effect size 0.18) after exercise; the fiber lengths of the gastrocnemius medialis, lateralis and soleus muscles were higher after exercise (p-value 0.002, 0.001 and 0.001, respectively, and effect size 2.03, 1.29 and 0.85, respectively); and the soleus mean pennation angle decreased after exercise (p-value 0.0015, effect size 2.31). These changes (or lack thereof) could be attributed to the extended acquisition time of the MRI scans to minimize noise: by increasing the acquisition time, the effect of the exercise may have been partially lost due to muscle recovery.

Abstract:
Abstract Evidentiality, i.e. the linguistic encoding of the mode of access to information (direct perception, inference, hearsay), despite not being fully grammaticalized in English and French, is expressed through a variety of means. This paper seeks to determine how a relatively non-salient concept in the source and target languages can be acquired by L2 learners. Using an oral elicited narrative task, we determine what markers of direct perception and inference are commonly used by native speakers of French (n = 10) and English (n = 10) and L2 learners of those two languages (at three levels of proficiency, n = 10 per group), and at which level they emerge. Our results point to a much more frequent use of inferential markers than direct perception markers, to slightly different patterns of evidential marking in French and in English, and to a late emergence of evidential markers in the speech of learners, who display sensitivity to their discursive functions, with types and tokens increasing as a function of proficiency level.

Abstract:
This bidirectional study investigated the L2 acquisition of plural marking in L2 Indonesian by native Korean speakers and in L2 Korean by native Indonesian speakers. Indonesian and Korean are classifier languages with partially overlapping restrictions on how pluralization interacts with quantification, allowing us to test the acquisition of new L2 features vs. the preemption of L1 features that are not in the L2. We also examined how the contextual complexity of new L2 features impacts development. Seventy learners at three L2 Korean proficiency levels and 40 native controls participated in Experiment 1; 61 learners at three L2 Indonesian proficiency levels and 39 native controls participated in Experiment 2. All participants completed three tasks – a Sentence Completion Task, a Grammaticality Judgment Task and a Multiple-Choice Task. Whereas learners were largely able to overcome the difficulty of preemption, they were less successful in acquiring new L2 feature contrasts in more complex conditioning environments.

Abstract:
In the early 2000s, ‘green investing’ caught the fancy of investors worldwide as they realized that being environmentally conscious could also be financially rewarding. The Suzlon Energy Initial Public Offering (IPO) in India in September 2005 received much attention, and was oversubscribed nearly 25 times. Many investors regarded Suzlon as a green investment opportunity, and the stock touched record high levels over the next three years of its listing. However, some large and highly leveraged acquisitions made with the objective of achieving fast growth led to major financial distress for the company. The race to capture new markets with new products also led to compromises on product quality and customer service. A good business model was damaged by bad investment decisions, and stock prices declined steadily. Suzlon disappeared from the radar of green investors till an acquisition 23 per cent stake in Suzlon Energy by a strategic investor revived the market’s interest in this stock. This paper is a case study of how, despite being a green business with great potential, Suzlon took on risks that led to major losses for its investors, and lessons for green investors of India.

Abstract This paper tests the universal Topic Prominence (TP) stage hypothesis and L1 transfer hypothesis by analyzing attested TP features, namely zero pronouns, bare (i.e., article-less) nouns, and post-nominal topic marking found in Korean written narratives collected from L2 Korean (TP language) speakers whose L1 is English (SP language) and Mandarin Chinese (TP language), respectively. The results showed that L2 Korean speakers used zero pronouns as frequently as L1 Korean speakers did from the early stage of their acquisition, whereas the use of the topic marking lagged behind, regardless of their L1 backgrounds. We explain the results by appealing to the universal acquisition path based on pragmatic-lexical-morphosyntactic cline: while the concept of the topic is (arguably) universal, its morphological marking is influenced by L1 as well as learning experience.
