The paper investigates the concept of salience as applied to lexical semantics. More precisely, it looks at whether one can speak of salience in the semantic features of a given meaning. A pilot study is conducted, in which the different meanings of a polysemous phrasal verb, take off, are described in terms of semantic features. Those features are then compared to each other so as to find out if some can be said to be more salient than others. The use-in-context of three lexical units - at, on and in - is analized in thousands of examples from the BROWN corpus of written American English. Syntactic scrutiny confirms the lexicon-grammar continuum, as far as particles cannot be categorized according to necessary and sufficient conditions.
