Abstract:
According to the theory of mental lexicon, lexical chunks refer to the multiword units with chunking effects while being processed in utterences. Language acquisition studies hold that formulaic sequences undertake more pragramatic functions bearing more conceptual processing and cultural information. There are some overlaps in the two terms. In the SLA studies in China, researchers attempted to use the coined term Cikuai to be the substitute of these two literally-translated terms—Cihui Zukuai for lexical chunks in Chinese and Chengshi Yu for formulaic sequences in Chinese. This paper proposes that lexical chunks and formulaic sequences have respective linguistic and cognitive features, which direct L1 and L2 speakers to process lexico-semantic multiword units in discourse in different ways. They are the subordinate terms of multiword units in English. This paper claims that the present terms can refer to holistically processed multiword units due to their formulaic and chunking effects.The significant differences lie in their degree of compositionality and semantic productivity. The lexical chunks have higher compositionality and semantic transparency, whereas the formulaic sequences are dynamic lexico-semantic multiword units, which offer exemplars instead of chunks for the reconstruction of lexical items in certain discourses. With regard to the lexical features of meaning extension, recursion and creativeness, we figure out their working definitions and come to the conlusion that Yukuai is not a good terminology to cover all the features entailed in them.

Abstract:
This paper presents an approach to create what we have called a Unified Sentiment Lexicon (USL). This approach aims at aligning, unifying, and expanding the set of sentiment lexicons which are available on the web in order to increase their robustness of coverage. One problem related to the task of the automatic unification of different scores of sentiment lexicons is that there are multiple lexical entries for which the classification of positive, negative, or neutral{P,N,Z}depends on the unit of measurement used in the annotation methodology of the source sentiment lexicon. Our USL approach computes the unified strength of polarity of each lexical entry based on the Pearson correlation coefficient which measures how correlated lexical entries are with a value between 1 and −1, where 1 indicates that the lexical entries are perfectly correlated, 0 indicates no correlation, and −1 means they are perfectly inversely correlated and so is the UnifiedMetrics procedure for CPU and GPU, respectively. Another problem is the high processing time required for computing all the lexical entries in the unification task. Thus, the USL approach computes a subset of lexical entries in each of the 1344 GPU cores and uses parallel processing in order to unify 155802 lexical entries. The results of the analysis conducted using the USL approach show that the USL has 95.430 lexical entries, out of which there are 35.201 considered to be positive, 22.029 negative, and 38.200 neutral. Finally, the runtime was 10 minutes for 95.430 lexical entries; this allows a reduction of the time computing for the UnifiedMetrics by 3 times.

Abstract:
The goal of this article is to determine the peculiarities of translation of national-cultural lexicon based on the analysis of Maisms (Mexican national lexical units of Spanish language in the state of Quintana Roo) and Maorisms (New Zealand national lexical units of English language). The article substantiates the need for knowing accuracies and specifics of formation and development of lexical units of national-cultural nature. Lexical units are examined in their historical evolution, as well as in modern synchronous context. Semantic meanings of the aforementioned terms are viewed through the prism of translation paradigm. The research material contains the survey of informants – residents of the indicated regions, as well as unilingual and bilingual academic dictionaries. The scientific novelty consists in comprehensive examination of specific characteristics of translation of the national-cultural lexicon on the example of two unrelated lexical national-cultural groups, as well as in analysis of the relevant lexical changes of linguistic units at the current stage of development of New Zealand version of English language and territorial dialect of Spanish language in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. It is proven that lack of knowledgeability of translators in the field of lexical aspects of the national-cultural language leads to misperception and subsequent inaccurate interpretation of speech patterns, oral and written texts.

Introduction. Medical linguistic units are considered to be non-separable parts of medical terminology. The study of medical euphemism as a medical linguistic unit is an urgent linguistic problem, since in recent decades the process of the formation of euphemisms has been proceeding with particular intensity. This is explained by the fact that at present one of the most important factors contributing to the formation of euphemisms and their consolidation in the language is their ability to be a powerful means of forming new social attitudes, and medical euphemisms are extremely widespread in socially significant spheres of medical speech activity.

Abstract:
This article is about semantic features of gender lexical units in modern linguistics. In everyday speech, the word “gender” is associated with the biological and social differences between women and men. In addition, people might know that languages can have masculine and feminine words. It may seem that grammatical gender is a reflection of natural gender in grammar. We know that in everyday language, gender is not talked about, not even mentioned. In other words, it is not the type of information that is predicated of a referent. It is not often uttered such statements as: ‘she’s a woman’ or ‘my computer is a thing’. These sentences are perfectly grammatical of course, and they make sense, but they are not uttered. Or if they are gender nous such as ‘woman’ or ‘man’ are not used to convey information about gender but some implicature, often close to stereotype: ‘She spends a fortune on perfume. – Well, what do you expect, she’s a woman’. In texts we find such utterances as ‘She was an extraordinary woman’ (where the noun is preceded by an adjective) but not ’She was a woman’. In the first of these two clauses the noun ‘woman’ is only there to support the extra specification of the adjective (‘extraordinary’).

Zero-resource speech processing involves the automatic analysis of a collection of speech data in a completely unsupervised fashion without the benefit of any transcriptions or annotations of the data. In this thesis, we describe a zero-resource framework that automatically discovers important words, phrases and topical themes present in an audio corpus. This system employs a segmental dynamic time warping (S-DTW) algorithm for acoustic pattern discovery in conjunction with a probabilistic model which treats the topic and pseudo-word identity of each discovered pattern as hidden variables. By applying an Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm, our method estimates the latent probability distributions over the pseudo-words and topics associated with the discovered patterns. Using this information, we produce informative acoustic summaries of the dominant topical themes of the audio document collection.

Abstract:
This dissertation investigates the cognitive relevance of selected morphological and phonological units in the Arabic mental lexicon. The morphological units are sound and weak roots, etymons, phonetic matrices, and sound and weak patterns. The phonological units are vowels and consonants. The work is motivated by a controversy in Arabic morphology that is paralleled by a cross-linguistic debate in lexical processing. There are two views in Arabic morphology, the stem-based theory and the morpheme-based theory that is represented by two sub-theories. The first sub-theory argues that derivations are based on roots and patterns and the second proposes that the root should be replaced by the etymon and the phonetic matrix. The morpheme-based theory is congruent with lexical processing hypotheses that propose that complex words are accessed and represented as morphemes. The stem-based theory maintains that derivation is stem or word-based and is in line with the whole word hypothesis of lexical processing. These theoretical positions on Arabic morphology and lexical processing were tested in six priming experiments. One objective of these experiments was to test which of these morphemes prime word recognition. Another objective was to test the prediction of connectionism, another lexical processing hypothesis, that priming time correlates with prime-target overlap. A third objective was to examine how abstract the processing of these morphemes could be. The cognitive status of vowels and consonants was tested using a letter-circling task. The results of the online studies have shown that both roots and etymons facilitate word recognition significantly more than orthographic controls. However, non-ordered etymons, phonetic matrices, and patterns did not facilitate word recognition. Weak roots had priming effects only when primes and targets shared a vague semantic relationship. There was no correlation between priming time and meaning and/or form overlap. The lack of priming with non-ordered etymons suggests that there could be limits on abstractness in lexical processing. The results of the offline task suggest that root consonants are more salient than other letters. On the whole, the results support a morpheme-based theory of Arabic morphology and a localist view of lexical processing that assumes a morphemic stage in word recognition.

Abstract:
The use-in-context of three lexical units - at, on and in - is analized in thousands of examples from the BROWN corpus of written American English. Syntactic scrutiny confirms the lexicon-grammar continuum, as far as particles cannot be categorized according to necessary and sufficient conditions. Semantic analysis is performed according to a polysemy model based on prototypes and radial categories. It is shown that the same semantic structure is common to all the uses of these particles, as a result of partial sanction and semantic extension of a single category. A prototype is posed for each category, based on topological, force-dynamic, and functional experiential dimensions, according to human perception of objects and their relationships. Particularly, the semantic structure of AT is developed on the basis of an ENCOUNTER schema, that of ON follows from a SUPPORT schema, and finally, that of IN derives from both an INCLUSION and a MEDIUM schema.

Devido a vários fatores, como saliência perceptual e relevância semiótica, as línguas apresentam repertórios diferentes de conceitos lexicalizados (isto é, conceitos expressos por unidades lexicais). As divergências léxico-conceituais dificultam o tratamento computacional das línguas naturais em tarefas como tradução automática e recuperação de informação multilíngüe. Assim, a construção de base de dados lexicais bilíngües e multilíngües em que as unidades de línguas distintas estão inter-relacionadas por meio do conceito a elas subjacente tem recebido muita atenção no Processamento Automático das Línguas Naturais (PLN). Para o português brasileiro (PB), faz-se urgente a construção desse tipo de recurso. Nesse cenário, esta tese visa a investigar os padrões de lexicalização do PB e a construir um recurso léxicoconceitual, ainda que de extensões reduzidas, que possa auxiliar o processamento automático dessa língua em meio escrito. Assumindo-se a concepção de PLN enquanto “uma engenharia da linguagem humana”, utilizou-se uma metodologia tripartida que divide as atividades nos domínios: lingüístico, lingüístico-computacional e computacional. Este trabalho, em especial, não realizou as atividades previstas no terceiro domínio, pois estas não fazem parte do escopo desta pesquisa. No domínio lingüístico, um conjunto de conceitos lexicalizados no inglês norte-americano (AmE), extraído da WordNet de Princeton (WN.Pr), foi delimitado por meio da análise manual de recursos estruturados (base de dados e dicionários) e não-estruturados (corpora textuais). Na seqüência, as expressões do PB (em especial, as unidades lexicais) que materializam tais conceitos foram manualmente extraídas de dicionários bilíngües (AmE-PB), dicionários monolíngües e thesaurus e de corpora textuais do PB. Because of several factors, including, for instance, perceptual salience and semiotic relevance, languages have different inventories of lexicalized concepts (i.e. concepts expressed by lexical units). The lexical-conceptual divergences are a hindrance to computational treatment of natural languages in tasks such as machine translation and cross-language information retrieval. Therefore, the construction of bilingual and multilingual lexical databases, in which the lexical units of different languages are aligned by their underlying concepts, has become a very important research topic in Natural Language Processing (NLP). For Brazilian Portuguese (BP), in particular, the construction of such resources is urgent. In this scenario, this thesis aims to investigate lexicalization patterns of BP and to develop a lexical-conceptual resource for the automatic processing of written BP language. Assuming a compromise between NLP and Linguistics, this work follows a three-domain approach methodology, which claims that the research activities should be divided into the linguistic, linguisticcomputational, and computational domains. In particular, this research does not perform the last step, since it is not in the scope of this work. Accordingly, in the linguistic domain, a set of lexicalized concepts of North-American English (AmE) extracted from Princeton WordNet (WN.Pr) was selected through manual analysis of the structured (lexical databases and standard dictionaries) and unstructured resources (textual corpora). Given those concepts, their lexical and phrasal expressions in BP were manually compiled from bilingual dictionaries, with the help of standard monolingual dictionaries, thesauri, and textual corpora. Multiword units (MWUs) is a term used in the current study to broadly cover what second language acquisition (SLA) researchers refer to as collocations, conventional expressions, chunks, idioms, formulaic sequences, or other such terms, depending on their research perspective. They are ubiquitous in language and essential in both first language (L1) and second language (L2) acquisition. Although MWUs are typically learned implicitly while using language naturally in both of these types of acquisition, the current study is an investigation of whether they are acquired in implicit knowledge when they are learned explicitly in a process called deliberate paired association learning. In SLA research, it is widely accepted that explicit knowledge is developed consciously and implicit knowledge is developed subconsciously. It is also believed that there is little crossover from explicit learning to implicit knowledge. However, recent research has cast doubt on this assumption. In a series of priming experiments, Elgort (2007, 2011) demonstrated that the formal and semantic lexical representations of deliberately learned pseudowords were accessed fluently and integrated into the mental lexicon, convincing evidence that deliberately learned words are immediately acquired in implicit knowledge. The current study aimed to extend these findings to MWUs in a psycholinguistic experiment that tested for implicit knowledge gains resulting from deliberate learning. Participants’ response times (RTs) were measured in three ways, on two testing instruments. First, subconscious formal recognition processing was measured in a masked repetition priming lexical decision task. In the second instrument, a self-paced reading task, both formulaic sequencing and semantic association gains were measured. The experiment was a counterbalanced, within-subjects design; so all comparisons were between conditions on items. Results were analyzed in a repeated measures linear mixed-effects model with participants and items as crossed random effects. The dependent variable was RTs on target words. The primary independent variable was learning condition: half of the critical MWUs were learned and half of them were not. The secondary independent variable was MWU composition at two levels: literal and figurative. The masked priming lexical decision task results showed that priming effects increased especially for learned figurative MWUs, evidence that implicit knowledge gains were made on their formal and semantic lexical representations as a result of deliberate learning. Results of the self-paced reading task were analyzed from two perspectives, but were less conclusive with regard to the effects of deliberate learning. Regarding formulaic sequencing gains, literal MWUs showed the most evidence of acquisition, but this happened as a result of both incidental and deliberate learning. With regard to semantic associations, it was shown that deliberate learning had similar effects on both literal and figurative MWUs. However, a serendipitous finding from this aspect of the self-paced reading results showed clearly that literal MWUs reliably primed semantic associations and sentence processing more strongly than figurative MWUs did, both before and after deliberate learning. In sum, results revealed that the difficulties learners have with developing fluent processing of figurative MWUs can be lessened by deliberate learning. On the other hand, for literal MWUs incidental learning is adequate for incrementally developing representation strength.

Para o português brasileiro (PB), faz-se urgente a construção desse tipo de recurso. Nesse cenário, esta tese visa a investigar os padrões de lexicalização do PB e a construir um recurso léxicoconceitual, ainda que de extensões reduzidas, que possa auxiliar o processamento automático dessa língua em meio escrito. Assumindo-se a concepção de PLN enquanto "uma engenharia da linguagem humana", utilizou-se uma metodologia tripartida que divide as atividades nos domínios: lingüístico, lingüístico-computacional e computacional. Este trabalho, em especial, não realizou as atividades previstas no terceiro domínio, pois estas não fazem parte do escopo desta pesquisa. No domínio lingüístico, um conjunto de conceitos lexicalizados no inglês norte-americano (AmE), extraído da WordNet de Princeton (WN.Pr), foi delimitado por meio da análise manual de recursos estruturados (base de dados e dicionários) e não-estruturados (corpora textuais). Abstract: Because of several factors, including, for instance, perceptual salience and semiotic relevance, languages have different inventories of lexicalized concepts (i.e. concepts expressed by lexical units). The lexical-conceptual divergences are a hindrance to computational treatment of natural languages in tasks such as machine translation and cross-language information retrieval. Therefore, the construction of bilingual and multilingual lexical databases, in which the lexical units of different languages are aligned by their underlying concepts, has become a very important research topic in Natural Language Processing (NLP). For Brazilian Portuguese (BP), in particular, the construction of such resources is urgent. In this scenario, this thesis aims to investigate lexicalization patterns of BP and to develop a lexical-conceptual resource for the automatic processing of written BP language. Assuming a compromise between NLP and Linguistics, this work follows a three-domain approach methodology, which claims that the research activities should be divided into the linguistic, linguisticcomputational, and computational domains. In particular, this research does not perform the last step, since it is not in the scope of this work. Accordingly, in the linguistic domain, a set of lexicalized concepts of North-American English (AmE) extracted from Princeton WordNet (WN.Pr) was selected through manual analysis of the structured (lexical databases and standard dictionaries) and unstructured resources (textual corpora). Given those concepts, their lexical and phrasal expressions in BP were manually compiled from bilingual dictionaries, with the help of standard monolingual dictionaries, thesauri, and textual corpora. Мета: дослідження перекладу комунікативних та номінативних одиниць з англійської мови українською. Теоретичне значення: теоретичне значення роботи полягає в поглибленні досліджень наукового апарату понять комунікативних і номінативних одиниць англійської мови, уточнено особливості перекладу комунікативних і номінативних одиниць, відмінності їх перекладу. У роботі використовувалися такі методи дослідження, як: метод аналізу, синтезу та узагальнення – використовувався для дослідження та формування теоретичної бази, представленої в роботі, метод контрастивного (порівняльного, зіставного), когнітивного аналізу. Метод було використано для проведення аналізу в практичній частині роботи. В рамках дослідження було з’ясовано, що номінативна одиниця представлена словами, словосполученнями, в окремих випадках реченнями. Вона призначена для позначення інформації, присутньої в мисленні мовця, а також активації відповідної інформації в мисленні слухача.
Мета: исследование перевода коммуникативных и номинативных единиц с английского языка на украинский. Теоретическое значение: теоретическое значение работы заключается в углублении исследований научного аппарата понятий коммуникативных и номинативных единиц английского языка, уточнены особенности перевода коммуникативных и номинативных единиц, различия их перевода. В работе использовались такие методы исследования, как: метод анализа, синтеза и обобщения – использовался для исследования и формирования теоретической базы, представленной в работе, метод контрастивного (сравнительного, сопоставительного), когнитивного анализа. Метод был использован для проведения анализа в практической части работы. В рамках исследования было выяснено, что номинативная единица представлена словами, словосочетаниями, в отдельных случаях предложениями. Она предназначена для обозначения информации, присутствующей в мышлении говорящего, а также активации соответствующей информации в мышлении слушателя.
Goal: research of translation of communicative and nominative units from English into Ukrainian. Theoretical meaning: the theoretical significance of the paper lies in the extension of the scientific apparatus of the concepts of communicative and nominative units, clarifying the features of the translation of communicative and nominative units, the differences in their translation. The following research methods were used in the paper: the method of analysis, synthesis and generalization – used for research and formation of the theoretical base, the method of contrastive (comparative), cognitive analysis. The method was used for analysis in the practical part of the work. At the process of the research, it was found that the nominative unit is represented by words, phrases, and sentences. It is used with the aim to indicate the information present in the speaker's thinking, as well as to activate the corresponding information in the listener's thinking. The concept of “communicative unit” is understood as a segment of speech that can independently transmit messages. The basis of a communicative unit is sentences and text.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to substandard elements which are considered as one of the components in the system of urban forms of communication. The Object of our research is substandard vocabulary, the Subject is structural characteristics of the modern city language, the Purpose of the study is to define the main types of substandard vocabulary and their role in the system of urban communication. The theoretical base of our research includes the scientific works of native and foreign linguists, which are devoted to urban linguistics (B. Larin, M. Makovskyi, V. Labov, T. Yerofeieva, L. Pederson, R. McDavid, O. Horbach, L. Stavytska, Y. Stepanov, S. Martos). Different lexical and phraseological units, taken from the Ukrainian, Russian and American Dictionaries of slang and jargon, serve as the material of our research. The main components of the city language include literary language, territorial dialects, different intermediate transitional types, which are used in the colloquial everyday communication but do not have territorial limited character, and social dialects. The structural characteristics, proposed in the article, demonstrate the variety and correlation of different subsystems of the city language. Today peripheral elements play the main role in the city communication. They are also called substandard, non-codified, marginal, non-literary elements or the jargon styles of communication. Among substandard elements of the city language the most important are social dialects, which include such subsystems as argot, jargon and slang. The origin, functioning and characteristics of each subsystem are studied on the material of linguistic literature of different countries. It is also ascertained that argot is the oldest form of sociolects, jargon divides into corporative and professional ones, in the structure of slangy words there are common and special slang. Besides, we can speak about sociolectosentrism of the native linguistics and linguemosentrism of the English tradition of slang nomination. Except social dialects, the important structural elements of the city language are also intermediate transitional types, which include koine, colloquialisms, interdialect, surzhyk, pidgin and creole. Surzhyk can be attributed to the same type of language formations as pidgin and creole because these types of oral speech were created mostly by means of the units mixing of the obtruded language of the parent state with the elements of the native languages.
