Abstract:
Definitions are the pivotal parts of dictionaries. Every lexicographer always strives to write definitions which are not only accurate but also comprehensible to dictionary users. Nevertheless, as shown in this paper, the definitions used in the current LSP dictionaries have not been able to suit the needs of their users. Therefore, it is necessary to create a typology of definitions for LSP dictionaries which can be referred to by lexicographers when writing definitions. The typology is created by implementing the lexicographical function theory which focuses on satisfying user needs. The typology takes into account both text production and text reception functions, as well as encyclopaedic and foreign language competences of the users. The proposed typology is expected to serve as a model which can be referred to by lexicographers when deciding on how to write definitions for LSP dictionaries in general, and ESP dictionaries in particular.

The Problem of lexical variation is frequently addressed within the linguistic community. Its complexity and the broad implications of any possible solution have considerable appeal among theoretical linguists. Lexicographers, in their turn, have been forced to address it in order to provide dictionary usage information, which is normally done by means of dictionary labels such as: American English, obsolete, slang , etc. An insightful overview of the relevant lexicological approaches, as well as some lexicographis projects is provided in Lipka (1990). The most exhaustive sociolinguistic classification, however, can be found in Preston (1986). Lexicographis treatments of lexical variation have been addressed in numerous papers listed in Zgusta (1988).

Abstract:
A lexicographer is not always a linguist. And a linguist is not a natural expert or semi-expert of lexicography. This is also the case for such lexicologists who see themselves as theoretical lexicographers. More important than such relationships are the negative consequences which a purely linguistic argumentation may have for lexicographical theory and practice. In many cases lexicological reviews of dictionaries and their proposals for better dictionaries are far removed from real lexicographical needs and improvements. This will be shown in a critical review of a recent publication about lexicological-lexicographical aspects.

Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2003.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In the past work on theoretical lexicography was often done simply "incidentally", usually flowing from research in pure linguistics. In the course of time theoretical lexicography and the compilation of dictionaries developed into a fully fledged discipline. The successful lexicographer requires particular characteristics and skills of a high quality. It appears from discussions with editors of dictionaries that even the best academic training does not necessarily produce an excellent lexicographer, as the compilation of dictionaries is a process that requires the skilful integration of theory, practice and language intuition. This study has tried to identify the knowledge, characteristics and skills that are necessary in order to train prospective lexicographers. An attempt has been made, by way of a selective literature review and conducting interviews with people engaged in the practice of lexicography, to design a model for the training of lexicographers. The study has shown that the training of lexicographers should not focus only on the theoretical aspects, but that in-service training or experience with a publisher of dictionaries is very important. A proposal is made on the subjects that should receive attention in the training of lexicographers. As part of the training model every prospective lexicographer should receive grounding in the development of management skills. A model for the compilation of dictionaries should emphasise the importance of a well thought-through conceptualisation of a plan for a dictionary as part of the lexicographical process. Lexicographers should be trained in the lexicographical process, from the collection of data to the preparation of the dictionary for publication. The purpose of the dictionary should also be identified as part of the planning phase. Prospective lexicographers must, among other things, build up an extensive knowledge of metalexicography, the general theory of lexicography, the management and planning of a dictionary project, the lexicographical process (from the collection of data to the publication and evaluation of dictionaries), aspects regarding the theories of semantics, morphology, phonology and syntax, and computer lexicography. Finally, a recommendation is made that certain components of lexicography training should also be undertaken at technikons rather than only at universities - this proposition should be researched further.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Werk in die teoretiese leksikografie is in die verlede dikwels bloot "toevallig" gedoen vanuit navorsing wat gewoonlik veral in die suiwer taalkunde gedoen is. Die teoretiese leksikografie en die skryf van woordeboeke het mettertyd ontwikkel tot 'n volwaardige dissipline. Sekere eienskappe en vaardighede van hoogstaande gehalte word benodig om 'n suksesvolle leksikograaf te wees. Uit gesprekke met woordeboekredakteurs blyk dit duidelik dat selfs die beste akademiese opleiding nie noodwendig 'n voortreflike leksikograaf saloplewer nie, aangesien die skryf van 'n woordeboek 'n proses is waardeur teorie, praktyk en taalintuïsie vaardig ineengevleg moet word. Hierdie studie het gepoog om die kennis, eienskappe en vaardighede te identifiseer wat nodig is om 'n voornemende leksikograaf te onderrig. Deur middel van 'n selektiewe literatuurstudie en persoonlike onderhoude met persone in die praktyk, is gepoog om 'n model daar te stel vir die opleiding van leksikograwe. Die studie het getoon dat leksikograwe se opleiding nie net op die teoretiese aspekte mag fokus nie, maar dat indiensopleiding of ondervinding by 'n woordeboekuitgewer van groot belang is. 'n Voorstel word gemaak oor die onderwerpe wat aandag behoort te geniet in die opleiding van 'n leksikograaf. As deel van die opleidingsmodel behoort elke voornemende leksikograaf onderlê te word in die ontwikkeling van bestuursvaardighede. 'n Model vir die samestelling van woordeboeke behoort klem te lê op die belangrikheid van 'n weldeurdagte woordeboekkonseptualiseringsplan as deel van die leksikografiese proses. Leksikograwe behoort in die leksikografiese proses onderrig te word, vanaf die verkryging van data tot die voorbereiding vir publikasie van die woordeboek. Die doel van die woordeboek moet ook geïdentifiseer word as deel van die beplanningsfase. Voornemende leksikograwe moet onder andere 'n deeglike kennis opdoen van die metaleksikografie, algemene leksikografieteorie, bestuur en beplanning van 'n woordeboekprojek, die leksikografiese proses (van die verkryging van data tot die uitgee van die woordeboek en die evaluering daarvan), aspekte van die teorie van semantiek, morfologie, fonologie en sintaksis en rekenaarleksikografie. Ten slotte word 'n aanbeveling gemaak dat bepaalde komponente van leksikografie-opleiding dalk ook by technikons en nie net by universiteite hoort nie - hierdie opmerking behoort verder nagevors te word.

This creative nonfiction dissertation is a memoir of the author's search for the somewhat mysterious hidden past of her father, the lexicographer Charles J. Lovell, who died in 1960, when the author was nine. Her father's early death left the author with many unanswered questions about his past and his family and so she undertakes a search to answer, if possible, some of those questions. Her search takes her to Portland, Maine; New Bedford, Massachusetts; and Pasadena, California, where she tries to discover the facts and uncover the forces that shaped her father's life. Along the way, she realizes how profoundly his death affected and shaped her own life, contributing to the theme of loss that pervades the memoir. In addition, she begins to realize how much her mother, Dixie Hefley Lovell, whose significance she previously overlooked, shaped her life. Ultimately, she comes to understand and accept that some of her questions are unanswerable.

Les besoins croissants en ressources lexicales et le succès des projets de développement coopératif comme LINUX convergent vers l'idée d'accumuler des données lexicales multilingues de grande taille et de grande richesse par construction coopérative sur la Toile et utilisation "mutualisée". Les contributeurs fourniraient eux-mêmes ces informations sous une forme standardisée grâce à un environnement adapté. L'étude du contexte actuel de la dictionnairique nous a conduit à l'identification de problèmes difficiles tels que la structuration et la manipulation de données hétérogènes, la visualisation d'une grande quantité de données lexicales multilingues et la construction en coopération par des personnes aux compétences diverses. Des prototypages et des expérimentations portant sur la consultation de ressources hétérogènes, l'enrichissement et personnalisation du résultat, la construction de ressources en ligne et la rédaction d'articles avec un éditeur standard nous ont permis de résoudre séparément ces problèmes. Cela nous a permis de concevoir un environnement complet de "bases lexicales" répondant à tous ces problèmes se plaçant au dessus des SGBD utilisés pour le stockage et intégrant un serveur pour la construction coopérative. Son noyau inclut un formalisme générique de définition de structures lexicales inspiré de SUBLIM de G. Sérasset, mais complété et réexprimé en XML. Cet environnement est actuellement appliqué au projet Papillon de développement par des bénévoles sur Internet d'une base lexicale comprenant cinq langues. L'architecture de la base est constituée d'un dictionnaire monolingue pour chaque langue et d'un dictionnaire pivot d'acceptions interlingues reliant les articles monolingues (lexies) dont la structure provient de la lexicologie combinatoire. Enfin, l'architecture du serveur assez générique devrait être réutilisée dans d'autres contextes (mémoires de traduction, outils pour traducteurs, communication et RI multilingue, annotations multimédia)<br>The growing needs in lexical resources and the success of the cooperative development projects such as LINUX lead to the idea of accumulating large amounts of very rich multilingual lexical data by cooperative construction on the Web and "mutualized" use. Contributions to data improvement would be standardized and made available thanks to an adapted environment. While studying of the current context of the dictionaries domain, we were led to identifying difficult problems such as heterogeneous data structuring and manipulation, as well as large amount of multilingual lexical data and visualization or construction in cooperation by people with different skills. Prototypes and experiments on consultation of heterogeneous resources, enrichment and personalization of the result, on-line resource building, and entries writing with a standard editor enabled us to solve these problems separately. It allowed us to design a complete lexical databases environment addressing all these problems as a specific layer directly above the DBMS tools that integrates a server for cooperative building. Its kernel includes a generic formalism for the definition of lexical structures derived from SUBLIM of G. Sérasset, but extended and translated in XML. This environment is currently applied to the Papillon project which aims at building/developing of a five-language lexical database by voluntary contributors on the Internet. The architecture of the database is made up of a monolingual dictionary for each language and a pivot dictionary of interlingual acceptions (axies) linking the monolingual entries (lexies) which structure comes from the domain of explanatory and combinatory lexicology. Extra languages are planned to be added soon. The architecture of the server is quite generic and could be reused rapidly in other contexts (translation memories and tools for translators, communication and multilingual IR, multimedia annotations)

The aim of this thesis is to describe how corpus-based Setswana dictionaries should be compiled. The challenge to the modern Setswana lexicographer is to compile very practical descriptive and user-friendly dictionaries. A detailed evaluation of existing Setswana dictionaries will be performed in terms of the macrostructural and microstructural aspects: <ul><li> Coverage of frequently used words. </li><li> Effective use of dictionary space. </li><li> Use of standard dictionary conventions. </li><li> Choice, ordering and composition of translation equivalent paradigms. </li></ul> The focus will be on material collection and corpus building. Informants will be used to compile an oral corpus of 100,000 tokens. All ethical requirements such as informed consent requirements (See Appendix 1) will be honoured. Since the text corpus is an organic corpus, thus not a designed corpus aimed at balance and representativeness, the oral corpus will be constructed in the same way i.e. only basic selection criteria: <ul><li> Mother tongue speakers of Setswana. </li><li> Adults (to be on a par with authors of the written sources in the text corpus). Age: ranging from 20-60 years. </li><li> Male and female. </li></ul> Critical analysis of all currently available Setswana dictionaries will be done with special reference to the dictionaries of Brown (1987) (SESD), Snyman, et al. (1990), Matumo (1993).(MSED), Kgasa (1976) (THAND) and Kgasa and Tsonope (1995).(THAN) In all these cases the strategy would be in terms of the theoretical criteria and best practices in terms of a broad theoretical survey of core aspects of dictionary compilation. La présente recherche se propose de déconstruire le postulat souvent véhiculé par l’histoire littéraire et la critique qui veut que les premiers lexicographes et grammairiens de l’espace iraqien des II/VIIIe et III/IXe siècles soient allées au sein même des tribus arabes dans le désert ou la bādiya (steppe) recueillir une grande partie de leur matériel linguistique. Notre hypothèse directrice suggère que ce poncif du voyage au désert aurait pris pour modèle celui des lexicographies du IV/Xe qui ouvre sur les espaces tribaux de la Péninsule Arabique et qui inféode l’histoire de la langue arabe à une perspective religieuse. Ce motif aurait été plaqué rétrospectivement sur les savants des deux siècles précédents à la faveur de l’espace vacant laissé par les indéfinitions des sources primaires arabes et des représentations qui rattachent les érudits des II/VIII e et III/IXe siècles à l’espace tribal et à ses locuteurs. Sur la base des premières mentions de l’enquête auprès des locuteurs Άrab/Arāb bédouins, il s’agit de revisiter le rôle des érudits en langue arabe de al-Kūfa et de al-Basra sur cette période intéressant les fondements des savoirs arabo-islamiques.

Abstract By the nature of the work they do, lexicographers are applied linguists. Yet many people working in the field have no formal training in linguistics. Does this matter? Our experience as editorial managers suggests that good lexicographers operate to a large extent on the basis of instinct, sound judgment, and accumulated expertise. A grounding in linguistic theory is not a prerequisite for being a proficient lexicographer – still less a guarantee of success in the field. But there are certain basic linguistic concepts which are invaluable in preparing people to analyse data and to produce concise, accurate dictionary entries. And as we noted earlier (§1.2.2), an awareness of linguistic theory can help lexicographers to do their jobs more effectively and with greater confidence.

Abstract In their attempts to describe the contemporary language, lexicographers are both overwhelmed by evidence and at the same time starved of evidence. Everything they ever read or hear or say is evidence for the existence of (or even for an answer to) some lexicographic question, but most of it flashes by so fast that it is impossible to capture. Even in these days of large electronic corpora, it is often not possible for a lexicographer to find precisely the right little bit of evidence that he or she needs at precisely the moment it is needed, to provide the answer to some question of detail. Indeed, we cannot always be sure that we are asking the right questions. A lexicographer is like a person standing underneath Niagara Falls holding a rainwater gauge, while the evidence sweeps by in immeasurable torrents.

This paper presents an overview of naval dictionaries created in Russia in the 18th–20th centuries, with an emphasis on the number of languages involved and the thematic scope. The multilingual character of these dictionaries can be explained by a range of reasons. Some of them are created on the basis of existing foreign dictionaries translated into Russian; others are the result of interest to collecting linguistic facts in different languages; the authors can also be motivated by the lack of available lexicographic resources in minor languages. 20th century dictionaries are bilingual, with a narrower thematic specialization and focus on specific professional purposes. This development corresponds to the requirements for lexicographic resources and recommendations for lexicographers formulated by V. P. Berkov. These dictionaries are mostly English-Russian ones as English is historically associated with Russian marine science and it is also the language of international maritime communication.

The paper dwells on Latvian terminology of the 21st century. It is coined mostly on the basis of English counterparts. There are many sources of this new terminology: Latvian branch and domain experts, professional EU institutions’ Brussels and Luxembourg based translators and terminologists, professional Latvia based translators and terminologists. But numerous terms are coined by random translators, journalists, media representatives, tradespeople, e. g. small shop owners, car dealers, etc. Finally, numerous new nonce terms are coined on the spur of the moment by interpreters, some of which are picked up by their audience and thus gain currency. This leads to a very chaotic terminology scene: often one English term has many established Latvian counterparts (available in official databases), while some terms have none and the English term is used in a grammatically changed or even unchanged form. Still other terms have ‘established’ Latvian counterparts in the shape of overextended definitions. These terms often breach basic principles of term-formation and contribute to terminological chaos, ambiguity and legal uncertainty. It also makes the work of lexicographers most complicated: dictionaries and databases could standardize terminology, but the descriptive approach to lexicography presumes reflecting lexis that is being used. A ray of hope can be seen in a gradual acceptance of metaphorical terminology.

The support of bilingual lexicographic resources is crucial in mastering legal terminology both in the target and source language. The present study has focused on Latvian-English and English-Latvian print and online lexicographic resources accessible for all parties interested in acquiring legal terminology in both languages, in particular in the light of the new school reform School 2030 where translation is mentioned among other competences that should be developed already at school. Even though several bilingual legal terminological dictionaries have been published it must be recognised that currently there is no comprehensive Latvian-English-Latvian dictionary of legal terms. At present the success or failure in mastering legal terminology largely depends on the background knowledge of the user. Trends prevailing in the study process as well as in translation practice confirm a marked movement towards the use of lexicographic resources in the digital format. It should be noted that this format also offers considerable advantages in designing dictionaries in respect of their content, volume, structure and user-friendliness. Digital format would allow developing a comprehensive bilingual dictionary of legal terms involving collaboration among legal professionals, terminologists and lexicographers. The microstructure of this dictionary should include labels, definitions, illustrative examples, etc. giving additional information and contexts where legal terms are used, thus providing important information for diverse groups of users – learners, legal professionals, translators and interpreters.
