The need to improve the linguoculturological interpretation of Russian proverbs and sayings in learners’ dictionaries determines the relevance of this study. Considering proverbs as signs of language and culture implies not only their cultural and historical commentary which modern lexicographers developing the ideas of paremiography classics successfully write. Also, it should reflect the functioning of proverbs (paroemias) in the modern sociocultural context. This involves providing live speech samples of native speakers, including peers of readers (i. e. schoolchildren and students) who use

This survey concerns the lexicographic presence of Giovanni Boccaccio’s Decameron in the Vocabolario of the Accademici della Crusca (from the first to the fourth edition). Boccaccio is the author that counts 15.600 occurrences (considering also his others literary works) already in the first edition. This is a significant situation about Decameron, because we know that a lot of its passages went through modifications and censorship: all of these interventions on Boccaccio’s text would have had some influence on the quotations into the Vocabolario. Starting from the declarations of the Accademici, the study wants to investigate about the employment of Decameron’s sources during the works for the Vocabolario, involving editions, manuscripts and Accademici’s autograph papers.

The present study deals with proverbs of Latin and French origin adopted into English throughout its history. Dictionaries such as the Oxford English Dictionary Online (OED Online) serve as valuable sources to identify the different lexical units. The treatment of proverbs in lexicographical resources is compared to their current usage as reflected by a multitude of recent newspaper articles. This raises the question of how the uses of the various proverbs as described in dictionaries such as the OED differ from those in recent newspapers. A socio-cognitive perspective is paramount in order to determine the variety of emotionally-affective forces which may account for English speakers’ motivations for using the borrowed proverb instead of a native translation equivalent.

Abstract This chapter describes terminological processes within the development of 19th century scientific knowledge. Taking the classification of cloud forms as an example, three terminological processes are analysed as they apply to the formation of 19th century scientific language i.e., term formation, term variation, and standardisation. These processes are presented through original quotations from primary sources and examined from the perspective of modern terminology theory. The formation of the nomenclature of clouds is set in the broader historical context of the 19th century construction of scientific disciplines and knowledge systematisation. The contribution of these processes to the progress of knowledge is discussed, as is the relevance of a diachronic perspective in the study of terminology.

Abstract:
The article is dedicated to the first universal encyclopaedic dictionary in Finnish. The Sanakirja yleiseen sivistykseen kuuluvia tietoja varten 1883–1819 (‘Dictionary of General Knowledge’) was written by Agathon Meurman, one of the most influential and versatile conservative politicians of his time. Earlier lexicographichistorical discussions of this work have included exemplary enumerations of lemmatic gaps, recurring examples of selected dictionary articles conceived in an ideologically tendentious manner, and brief references to possible lexicographic sources. One such source, most commonly invoked as crucial to Meurman’s work, is the so called Kleiner Meyer, or Meyers Hand-Lexikon des allgemeinen Wissens 1871–1872. Meurman's lexicon, however, has not yet been systematically studied regarding specific lexicographical questions, such as lemma selection, or the structuring and presentation of information. This article examines in detail the literature-related lemma inventory of Meurman’s dictionary to answer the following questions: 1) To what extent did the author's political and ideological views find its way into the first Finnish encyclopaedia? 2) How was the information ideologically filtered and selected for presentation? The analysis begins with documenting the genesis of Meurman’s dictionary, partly on the basis of previously unused historical sources. Then, for the first time, a reliable identification of the sources used by Meurman is undertaken. Only with a solid basis for comparison is it possible to adequately analyse, both quantitatively and qualitatively, Meurman’s way of presenting literary knowledge in a broader biblio-cultural context. The result confirms that his work can be classified as an instrument of ideological struggle, and reveals ethically questionable procedures. However, the close comparison of sources also casts a critical spotlight on the perception of Meurman’s dictionary as a special case in the history of encyclopaedic writing.

Abstract:
In the design of the specialised software for production of bilingual word indices to Constantine of Preslav’s Didactic Gospel, we faced two major challenges. One, common to such texts, is the lexico-grammatical asymmetry between the language of the source and that of the target of the translation. The other, specific to the current work, has to do with the sources and editions of the texts in both languages. At the beginning of this article, we briefly present the key circumstances that, on the one hand, define the lexicographical concept of the word indices, and on the other hand, further sh

Previously, when choosing lexical entries for a dictionary, lexicographers were guided mainly by their intuition, occasionally resorting to traditional methods of empirical data collection such as surveys and observation of the native speakers’ discourse. With the widespread availability of electronic corpora, an additional method has emerged which facilitates assessment and analysis of linguistic units
