Abstract:
Teaching FFL lexicology: opening new approaches The main aim of this paper is to show major problems of modern lexicology as well as to improve the teaching of lexicology at the university by taking into account new theories that appeared at the end of the 20th century. Modern education requires the introduction of new terminology such as eponymy, enantiosemy, meronymy, etc., and the revision of the so-called classical theories and themes such as polysemy, semantic evolution, word formation or borrowing. It is also essential to introduce several topics and approaches including, above all, field theory, connotation theory, the problem of the concept, cognitive semantics, prototype theory and stereotype theory, linguistic and cultural aspects, semantic universals, etc. We seek to identify the main problems posed by the study of French vocabulary, to show the development of theories and lexical approaches during the 20th and the 21st centuries. It is thought that students should be provided with information on the new orientations and methods existing in contemporary linguistics, primarily semiotic, cognitive, discursive and contrastive, even if presented in different or even contradictory versions. At the same time, an overview of lexicology textbooks shows that several rather well-known phenomena remain on the margins of study; these include calques, international words, occasionalisms, semantic archaisms, etc. Therefore, adequate definitions of terms and their use, precise identification of their peculiarities within relevant paradigms in contemporary studies of lexicology are indispensable. Key words: lexicology; French; teaching; approach; theory of the word.

It highlights the possibilities offered by digital textual corpora and the need to bear in mind the contrastive study of languages (especially when it comes to Occitan) and the cultural history when diachronic semantics and lexicology of Catalan are done. Likewise, basic notions of cognitive semantics are applied in the study of linguistic change. Abstract:
ABSTRACT. This work studies, from lexico-semantic point of view, the words and expressions on postage stamps. Specifically, it is a question of apprehending the history conveyed by the words engraved on the philatelic productions circulating in Cameroon during the German, English and French domination. From a theoretical point of view, this study falls within the field of lexicology and semantics. The lexical approach describes the structure and formation of words in German, English and French. The semantic approach, on the other hand, questions the meaning of words and ideological discourses. On the methodological level, we rely on a corpus of philatelic productions. Through this corpus, we focus our attention on the interpretation of words or expressions on stamps, highlighting the great sequences of colonial history in Cameroon. The interest of this work is to question the colonial history under the prism of the expressions reproduced on the postage stamps. Keywords: Cameroon, colonization, history, lexicology, philately, postage stamps, semantics.

Abstract:
In his first research project, Greimas developed and applied new methods in the historical lexicology of modern French. His theoretical articles formulate a sociological approach that analyses vocabulary as a history of culture, illustrated in his two dissertations on fashion in 1830. In the 1980s, from the perspective of his semiotics, Greimas dismissed his early scholarship as failed experiments that taught him what not to do. In the changed epistemological context of the 21st century, the work appears as pioneering research in cultural studies which possesses clear scholarly value. Greimas’ philological and lexicological training bore fruit directly and indirectly throughout his career. Two decades before he launched his semiotics, his project for lexicology proposes a semantic methodology, envisions the construction of an organon for the human sciences, and explicitly calls for a multi-generational collaborative enterprise. Like his structural semantics and semiotics, this lexicology entails three inseparable components: epistemological foundations, concrete methodologies, and robust applications. Moreover, a focus on the lexeme characterizes Greimas’ structural semantics and persists in his semiotics.

Abstract:
Combinatorial lexicology as a section of lexicology deals with the theory of syntagms, valency, collocability, the relation of word semantics and collocability, the relation of syntagmatics of a language sign and the language system, functions of collocability, etc. Due to the high importance of linguocultural competence, it comprises such subsection as ethnocultural combinatorial lexicology, which studies ethnocultural collocations – combinatorially conditioned combinations of words reflecting socially significant realities for a certain ethnic group, in other words containing cultural specificity, which impedes their understanding by the representatives of other linguocultures. The article covers the peculiarities of the syntagmatic relations, semantic properties of words to create culture-specific collocations, the role of context in actualization of the meaning of the word and uniqueness of some concepts for a specific language community.

Abstract:
At the turn of 21st century Serbian lexicology is under the influence of the Slavic (predominantly Russian) and Anglo-Saxon semanticists. Different semantic theories are used in language analyses in Serbian papers. Since the 1970s componential analysis had been a leading theory, but as of the 1990s Serbian lexicology has come under the influence of cognitive linguistics. There are more and more interdisciplinary investigations where linguistics is interwoven with psychology, communicology, and sociology. Often, lexicology is interwoven with other linguistic disciplines, such as syntax, word formation, morphology, stylistics, etc. Recently, some semantic studies have been conducted from the pragmatic viewpoint. Depending on the object of the analysis and the theory chosen, different research methods are used, such as collocational, associative, and additionally, various types of syntactic and semantic approaches are taken. The focus of interest is semantics of words, and less frequent of morphemes or sentences. The future of Serbian lexicology lies in promoting an interdisciplinary approach, and its relation with other linguistic disciplines and other nonlinguistic sciences.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the study of the theoretical basis of autonomous secondary naming processes and scrutinizing the issues, related to this type of naming in the scope of modern Arabic lexicology as a productive means of assigning meanings to concepts. The article reviews approaches of native and Arabic authors to the comprehension of the phenomenon and features of autonomous secondary naming (in modern Arabic linguistics – ‘Al-Majaaz’).The paper deals with morphological nuances of word formation and specific aspects of functioning of lexical units formed as the result of Al-Majaaz. It also touches upon semantics of secondary autonomous units. The article shows the correlation between autonomous secondary nomination units and single-word semantic borrowings (loans). Morphological characteristics of single-unit loan words and the reasons of their functioning in Modern Literary Arabic are also subject to study. The paper considers the prospects of autonomous secondary units functioning in the context of their interconnection with polysemy, homonymy and synonymy. This paper will be of interest for students, who study Arabic and lexicology, semantics and morphology issues, as well as for translators interested in word formation processes.

This research aims the lexical-semantical analysis of the lexical unities of denomination (nouns and adjectives) used by Brazilian written press (Veja, Época and Isto É magazines and Folha de S. Paulo journal) during the covering of The United States war against Iraq, between February and April, 2003. Such investigation aims at standing out the importance of lexical choices in the enunciation forming. It is also intended to analyze the manipulation of ideas resulting from the lexical selection and its consequences to journalistic work. Among the analyzed publications, those that used more lexical unities with traces of signification tending to influence readers were pointed out. It has been taken into consideration the hypothesis that lexical choices can or tend to orient reader opinion. The theoretical current used is the Structuralist Lexical Semantics, based on works of researchers as Ferdinand Saussure, Bernard Pottier, Horst Geckeler, Louis Guilbert, Oswald Ducrot, Kurt Baldinger, Eugenio Coseriu, Algidras Julien Greimas, Johns Lyons, Frank Palmer, Charles Muller, Stephen Ullmann, Trier, Weisgerber, Mario Vilela, Maria Aparecida Barbosa and Maria Teresa Biderman, among others. The lexical unities analysis was initiated with the reading of texts from media, from where the nominal unities (nouns and adjectives) were picked out, considering the context in which they were inserted. These unities were analyzed according to the meaning relation that they keep among themselves (synonymy, polysemy, homonymy, hyponymy). The meaning relations and the identification of significant traces in the context show intentionality in the option of one word in detriment of possible others, at the enunciation moment.

This thesis aims at investigating and organizing nouns and adjectives, extracted from Claudia magazine samples, comprising the years from 1961 to 1969, in lexical groups to show ideological and behavioral aspects of part of the Brazilian female universe. Thus, it is intended, through the vocabulary study, once the community values and believes reveal themselves in it, to analyze the Brazilian female behavior of the sixties’. To do so, the Concept System of Rudolf Hallig and Walter von Wartburg will be used. The use of this concept system is done in accordance to the basis of the structural semantic analyses. As theoretical support, it was utilized the research line of the Lexicology of French origin, postulated by Matoré (1968) and Dubois (1971) who establish a relation between Lexicology and Sociology. Concerning the magazine, it is important to register that its first publications happened at the end of 1961; it was considered, at that time, the most modern publication addressed to the female public, and it intended to reach the women from class A/B, from 20 to 35 years old, married, with children, whose highest concerns were their homes and family. We used, for the organization of the corpus, samples of the Library Mário de Andrade property from Araraquara city and of the Library Mário de Andrade from São Paulo city.

Abstract:
In this Master´s Dissertation we have proposed to analyze the minimal unit of meaning in the Ethno-terminology in the lexicon of Grande Sertão: Veredas, in its ethno-literary aspect, in order to understand how the reality of phenomenon is reflected in the axiology of the social-linguistic-cultural group of the sertanejo dos gerais. We have analyzed, in its different stages, the process of conceptualization of some word-terms of some of the work´s denominations. Such process takes place in the generative trajectory of enunciation and is constituted by groups of conceptual semes, the nemes. The linguistic analysis revealed how the denominations, result of the persuasiveness of the announcer subject, originate in the conceptual qualities of cognition and are materialized in specific semantic traits, or in the concepts of each lexical unit, integrating the modalization process. We could observe that the conceptus, in its broad meaning, moves from its natural trajectory towards the cultural, and expands with the addition of conceptual semes which get organized in two groups: the ones with a cultural and ideological nature and the ones with a modalizing and intentional nature. Guimarães Rosa transplanted his linguistic research to his texts, to the protection of denominations, and enhanced the significants tied to concepts bearing semantic exclusivities which build from the specificity that names the beings, result of the knowledge inherited and grouped over generations. It is in this semantic exclusivity that the frontier that exists between word and term of the languages of specialities become dense in his novel, and it is, in those boundaries, that the word-term presents itself, in which the author finds words which are vigorous, profound and not wasted by inappropriate use. We have verified, especially, in the analysis of words chosen by us, the genesis of the word-term in the regional linguistic specificities and which draws ethnically the identity of a group. We are aware that in every of Rosa´s work, in a smaller or bigger proportion, we verify the use of the virtuality that the linguistic system offers to its speakers, and the approach of the sociolinguistic aspects, converging to an unused semantics of the word-term in Rosa, which collaborated, in our point of view, to better characterize them in this ethno literary aspect. The analysis of the word-terms in Grande Sertão: Veredas demonstrates a resemantic process of the word used in the general language. That is, new sememes enrich the lexical unit, and also, the experience of those who approach the text, in referential, pragmatic and symbolic aspects, constituting, simultaneously, a semantic and social document of a culture. The words in use in general language constitute symbol-signs in Grande Sertão: Veredas.

Ibitinga, which is a Brazilian town nationally known for its outstanding position in the embroidery business, has its economy almost totally based on the production of a broad selection of embroideries. With this embroidery industry in the backdrop, this master thesis describes the whole linguistic and computational-linguistic process of construction of ontolexicons – formal constructs whose lexical-conceptual nature allows for both theoretical (lexical-grammar construction) and applied (lexicographical and ontolexical resource construction) research. In particular, the study focuses on the design and implementation of a toy ontolexicon for the Ibitinga Embroydery Industry lexical-conceptual domain. Its theoretical foundations have drawn heavily on lexical semantics (wordnets), frame semantics (framenets), natural language processing, and ontologies.

Abstract:

Some elements of historical and cultural reality, identified in fiction about the State of Rio Grande do Sul, have contributed and still contribute to the construction of a social imaginary and of a regional identity, whether in representations of the environment in which the narrative takes place or in the language used by the writer. On the assumption that the writer’s lexical choices are relevant factors to setting the historical context of a given season, this paper aims to examine the relation between the lexicon of the novel called “The House of Seven Women”, by Leticia Wierzchowski (2002) and regional culture. To achieve these goals, this dissertation develops a lexical-semantic analysis of the representation of the historicalcultural and social characteristics of Rio Grande do Sul from the selection of lexias, organized into lexical fields according to Coseriu's theory (1979). As theoretical contribution it was used the lexical studies, Lexicology, Lexicography and Terminology, emphasizing the lexicon related to culture and regional aspects.

Abstract: The language in use in a society is product of a culture and reflects the way a community thinks. Therefore, the lexical units, through the meanings assigned by a social group, establish a specific look of the universe and a system of values. With this basement, our work centers its attention in a specific lexical type: the lexical units that nominates the organs from the erotic zone, that are the penis, the vulva, the buttocks, the anus, the testicles and the breast, in Italian and Portuguese language, Brazilian variety, by analysing our corpus. We intend to demonstrate that for the denomination of the sexual organs of the human body it usual to avoid the official anatomical terminology - relegated to the contexts of great formality - and to adopt other lexical items during informal situations. Many of the collected items are not accepted in all the contexts, but between known people, they may designate familiarity. Thus, innumerable synonymous are used to alleviate one lexical unit, trying to mask social prejudices historically constructed. We begin our research examinating the cited lexical items under the light of the theory of the conceptual metaphor - because many of the employed items have a metaphorical and also euphemistics basis. The product of our research is a special onomasiological bilingual dictionary, enclosing part of the mentioned studied of the lexical type. We introduce also in the entries of it semes (minimal meaning unit) present in the main metaphors related to these organs. The addition of these semes reveals an innovation in the study of the erotical-obscene argument, practically unexplored by the linguists. We intend, with this research, to be able to collaborate to demystify some prejudices related to the erotical-obscene lexicon, its use and its creation and to stimulate reflections of it, whose examination of the metaphors...
Toponymy, a branch of onomastics, is the linguistic science which aims at studying the names of physical and human geographic features, from the analysis of the language-culture-society. This research intended to inventory, describe and analyze the toponyms human accidents (state micro-regions, municipalities) and physical (rivers) of the Western Brazilian Amazon, i.e. the state of Acre, in order to verify to what extent these toponyms portray reality physicalgeographical and socio-cultural in the appointment of such spaces. This research is guided by the following hypothesis: Acreâs toponymy preserves linguistic, socio-historical, cultural and physical-geographical particularities characteristics of the region, that influenced the denominator the act of naming. Data were collected mainly throug Political and Administrative Map of Acre (2006), scale 1: 1000 000, provided by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE-AC). We adopted Dickâs theoretical and methodological approach, and the theoretical principles of lexicology and semantics, considering prominent issues concerning the construction of the meaning of lexical items associated with toponymic categories. We adopted, for the distribution of toponymic signs collected, Salazar-Quijadaâs terminology: macrotoponyms, for the appointments of State and Micro-regions; microtoponyms for the municipalities, and place names, for appointments rivers. The results showed, compared to macrotoponyms a complete duct motivating influence of physical nature, because all the place names recorded fall compared to tax hydrotoponyms (100.0%). This shows that the current regional water reflected completely the geographical nomenclature of the state and micro-regions. Comparatively to microtoponyms, municipalities, however, the prevailing motivation nature-cultural anthropology, since taxes were recorded as the most productive namely, historiotoponyms (38.1%) and etnotoponyms (13.7%). The toponyms human accidents, in a general way, showed the superiority of the motivational factors related to nature and cultural anthropology (67.9%) if compared to factors of physical nature (32.1%). Concerning to physical accidents of place names motivational factors of nature and cultural anthropology (50.0%) were predominant taking as parameter those of physical nature (36.7%). The most productive taxes were zootoponyms (16.7%) dimensiotoponyms (10.0%) and antrotoponyms (10.0%). To summarize, the analysis of Acre landforms toponymic showed that in the construction of the meaning of signs toponymic, linguistic and extralinguistic elements cooccur. Acreâs toponyms are generally motivated by socio-historical, cultural and physical geography constraints. The results, in totum, confirm the hypothesis which founds our research.

The aim of this dissertation consists in studying the changes towards Family Law lexical units taken out of different periods of Brazilian Laws, based on their lexicology contributions. The reason behind this written essay is the narrow relation between Language and Law, since the Juridical Science manifests itself in language and depends on it to fulfil its functions. For the research, a corpus formed by words of Family Law was analyzed; words that have a straight relation with the concept of family which embodies the trinity father, mother and son or daughter, and from this principle a retrospection in criminal and civil legislation was placed since the Philippine regulations until the current Brazilian Codifications. Hereby, it was observed the changes in the studied units signifier and signified, as well as the creation or the adaptation of words that express law facts. Therefore, as it is intended to be shown, the changes in social habits influenced the law changes, and consequently caused modifications in language that are directly observed in lexicon, causing a word to appear or not to be used anymore, providing evidences of the narrow relation among Law, Language and Society.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study is to correlate and compare the linguistic and cultural features of phraseological units with the component-zoonym in Russian, French and English. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that it presents a number of specific observations and conclusions made as a result of personal analysis, combining structural, semantic and cognitive elements, conducted on a specific material. The practical value of this study is that its results can be further used to study the issues of lexicology and stylistics of the three languages.
