Full textThe language of blazon is a technical language dedicated to some pictural representation in colour. It is a unique situation in history and in the history of linguistics. It will be shown how syntax and lexicon have devised specialized functions to describe its colours and figures. The study shows that any text can be represented picturally in a very accurate way and conversely, any image can be described in a concise way. Syntax, rooted in old french, has grown simpler and more concise, whereas the lexicon has complexified and grown richer from all environing sources (neighbouring regional languages and dialects) and created an unlimited number of determiners derived from nominals

Full textThis thesis on work exposes the essential characteristics of the French chromatic lexicon of the 20th century and our contemporary time. The progressive advance of research is analyzed: drafting of articles "color" for the Trésor de la Langue Française (TLF), under the terms of the "science of the color" for a complement of the TLF, with the design and the publication of various volumes of the Dictionnaire des mots et expressions de couleur. Le Bleu (1998, new edition 2004), Le Rouge (2000), Le Rose (2002). . . Until his prolongations by the analysis of particular aspects (etymologies, synesthesias, field of the mode - clothing, cosmetics -, difficulties of translation of the lexicon of the colors from one language to another - in particular within the European languages). This synthesis of research highlights the problems encountered to define the words of color in a « language dictionary » and the means put to solve the inherent difficulties in this lexicon, between « current language » and « language of speciality ». It updates an at the same time linguistic and extra-linguistic system by underlining the primarily referential structure of this lexicon. The words and expressions of color, descriptions but especially connotative, translate the cultural and symbolic codes and constitute a true « echo » of the society

Full textThis thesis proposes a morphologic, semantic and syntaxic study of compound nouns including a color term in french. This study aims at understanding the functioning of these formations very numerous in French and finding the definitional criteria delimiting these nouns that have very varied structures such as ours blanc, feu rouge, travail au noir or vert-galant. By using a rich corpus containing more than 7000 forms, we undertook a systematic analyze of the phenomenon in order to give an overview of the creation process implemented. This work therefore provides numerous justifications for the substantial use of these locutions and for the dominant position of the color terms in the compounding. Finally, a classification considering the heterogeneity of the structures and of the formation process of the compound nouns including a color term reveals the wealth of the french combinatory

Full textThis thesis investigates the uses and functions of colour in Florentine panel painting of the Trecento. As the first study on this topic, it moves beyond a mere analysis of hues, using a multidisciplinary approach that incorporates lexicography, material studies, and visual analysis. To determine the role of colour within Florentine society, the first section undertakes a comprehensive examination of colour vocabulary in 14th-century Italian languages, revealing both the significance of red within Florentine culture and the neutrality of colour terms regardless of context. The second section provides a synthesis of previous studies on the material history of colour and an overview of the materials and their application techniques. It highlights the inherent complexity of tempera techniques and the systematic use of pigments, while also allowing for some adaptability to artists' preferences. Finally, the third section examines the functions of colour within images, from both iconographic and pictorial perspectives. This study brings to light the systems underpinning painter colour choices, showing that, while certain individual preferences may be identified, the use of colour in panel paintings follows iconographic, rhetorical, and functional rationales reflecting the intellectual, religious, and artistic context of the period

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to identify the linguistic strategies used by the primary school pupils to talk about colors, sounds and smells through oral conversations and in “school-situations”. We adopt a context-dependent point of view, capable of handling heterogeneous situations, cultural determination and dynamic discourses. This approach emphasizes the social stakes of the opposition between ordinary French language and “school-language”. Two surveys have been taken and lead on two corpora. The first corpus consists of ten hours recordings of rather informal interactions, which do not posit language as a focus-on subject. Pupils were performing tasks based on samples of colors, smells and sounds. We added this first corpus with scholar exercises face to face the investigator. This second corpus consists of classroom tasks aiming at highlighting the difficulties that pupils may encounter in naming these sensations. We have obtained relatively homogeneous series allowing contrast the discourse performance of pupils. Globally, the study points out a gap between the small number of words used by pupils in repeated syntactic structures and the richness of lexical resources of “school-language”; it also shows a series of differences between the denominative strategies used by children and those preferred by adults. Finally, we stressed the didactic interest to study phraseology as an interface between language, discourse and culture

Full textThis research attempts to determine how the implementation of systems and processes in artistic work carries with it an attitude. This attitude, which arises from the use of imported colour or ready-made colour, implies thinking of colour as a practice, modifying the artist's position and looking at painting as the creation of "objects over there" that have to fit among other everyday objects. Thus this research gives an account of displacements that, initiated by the use of industrial colour or that of common objects, create a back-and-forth movement between the viewer, the painting and the world, and make a new sharing of vision possible

Full textThis work is articulated around the concepts of dynamical functioning and interactive processing in language development. More precisely, it seeks to show the part played by the lexicon and its functional characteristics in the emergence of this functioning. Thus, the “at risk” child might be one whose oral language functioning is insufficiently dynamical. A comparative study and a longitudinal approach carried out with "at risk" children try to clarify the role of the lexicon. The results show a real impact of the organization between several language components on the learning of the written language; to intervene on the level of the lexicon can then modify this organization. However, the results clarify other explanatory systems (motricity, implicit learning) and show that an early prediction of the skill to identify words is possible
