Full textThe semasiological analysis of german verbs of vision consisting in checking which constructions they accept or not shows that : they are divided into two categories : the ones present the process from the perspective of the perceiving subject (sehen. . . ) and the others in that of the perceived object (leuchten. . . ), the main verbs form pairs based on these perspectives : sehen/leuchten (bilateral relationship), schauen/scheinen (relationship of tension), gucken/strahlen (activity of an only element), blicken/glänzen (an activity depending upon an external factor to develop), the semanticism of each verb is based on a previsional scheme, a structure that makes it possible to foresee which constructions are accepted and which are not. The structure of the field rises out of the relationship between schemes. This essay offers new ways to the analysis of polysemy and could be highly profitable for cognitive linguists eager to root the analysis of language in the experience of the world

Full textOur work is divided into three parts. We will examine in the first part a few problems that arise when creating a bilingual lexicography; that is, the definition of a bilingual dictionary and the notions of translation, connotation and equivalence. These problems will be illustrated by examples taken from the most important Berber dictionaries. In the second part of this work, we will present the lexicon of verbs (simple and derived) of the speech dialect of the city of Inezgane. This part is presented in dictionary form; each verb entry is defined. The examples, invented or taken from our corpus, demonstrate the uses and the possible occurances of each verb. In the third part of this work, to complement the preceding chapters, we present some elements of the morphology of the verbs of the speech dialect in question. Please note that this study is not meant to be an exhaustive description of the verbal system. Finally, to end this part we have included a short discussion on the notions of root, schema, personal index, explicative complement and indicator of theme

Full textAccross four lexical decision experiments and four lexical decision with masqued prime experiments, identification and lexical representation of prefixed verbs are studied. The major factor is represented by the nature of the stem (noun, verb or potentially both). It is found that morphological structure plays an important part in the identification of prefixed verbs and that a morphological analysis is realised during reading of these morphological complex items. Experiments with masqued prime show that lexical representation of prefixed verbs depends of stem nature, items with nom inal stem are represented in a global form, items with verbal stem are represented in decomposed form. The morphological structure of verbs and the relations between prefix and stem are determining factors of representationnal format of prefixed verbs. With some adjustements, currents models are able to explain these results. An interpretation of lexical processes and memory representaion for morphologically complex prefixed verbs is proposed

Full textThe present study is an attempt to explore the possibility of analysing the meaning of motion verbs in contemporary english, and to illustrate one approach to the realization of this possibility. Specifically, its purpose is threefold. First, it is an attempt to demonstrate that an analysis of meaning, such as the one that has successfully been applied to kinship terminology, is also possible for other types of vocabulary. Second, it is meant to show some methodological implications of such an approach for the treatment of certain linguistic problems such as 'synonymy', 'hyponymy', 'metaphor' and 'phonaesthesia'. Third, the study is also an attempt to characterize, in the light of recent developments on the subject, the nature of difficulties, theoretical and methodological, raised by such an analysis. The thesis is made up of two main part. Part one is concerned with theoretical problems and is divited into two chapters. The first chapter is a survey of various approaches to the study of meaning. The secon chapter is an attempt to evaluate those approaches through a discussion of some descriptive problems in the light of recent developments on the subject. Part two deals with a practical problem of analysing some verbs of motion in contemporary english. In the first chapter, other studies on ensligh motion verbs are examined. The second chapter is concerned with methodological considerations. First, verbs of motion are defined and the corpus is delimited. Then, explanations about the method adopted in this study are given. This is followed, in chapter three, by a detailed analysis of the motion verbs included in the corpus. In chapter four, the

Full textThe current research aims to provide a syntactic and semantic analysis of Modern Greek transitive non-locative constructions with one direct object: N0 V N1. Our study is based on the syntactic framework of the Transformational Grammar defined by Zellig S. Harris. We followed the Lexicon-Grammar methodology framework developed by Maurice Gross and elaborated at the LADL (Laboratoire d'Automatique Documentaire et Linguistique). Based on 16 560 morphological verbal entries, we proceeded to the classification of transitive non-locative constructions. On the basis of formal criteria we divided them into 24 distinct classes that formed an inventory of 2 934 transitive non-locative verbal uses with one direct object. Among them, 1 884 verbal uses were split into nine classes and they were formally described in 9 lexicon-grammar tables established for this purpose. More precisely, these structures include a direct object referring to the following concepts: “appearance” (32GA table), “disappearance” (32GD), “concrete” object (32GC), “body part” (32GCL), “human” object (32GH), and “obligatory plural” (32GPL). Likewise, the passive transformation is largely blocked in the 32GNM table, while the 32GCV and 32GRA tables regroup verbs accepting a support verb transformation. We present the linguistic data application in Natural Language Processing (NLP), by means of automatic tables conversion into recursive transition network automata. Moreover, we set forth our remarks on their applicability in translation from Modern Greek to French as well as in language learning/teaching (Modern Greek as first or second language)

Full textThe work that we present in our research is a lexicographic end-product, that is, a presentation of the lexis of verbs of the Berber variety spoken in central morocco. The major part of our research is devoted to an inventary of 1241 non-derived verbs. These verbal unities, as they are accumulated so as to form a dictionary of Berber verbs, are classified according to the semitists' order, that is the root. Once the collection of the verbal unities has been achieved, the presentation of the different uses is imposed. To achieve that, we have followed a classification based on syntactical criteria knowing the transitivity and non-transitivity of the verb. This verbal formula has helped us deduce the different meanings of each unity. Our dictionary is accompa-nied with one part which we have tried to present each unity in one of the following verbal structure : category a gathering the intransive verbs, category b constitued of compulksary or optional direct transitive verbs, category c and category d to which belong the direct and indirect transitive verbs. Finally we have summed up all the verbal unities in tables where their transitive or intransitive use showed up

Full textThis study is bent on considering the possible applications and limits of linguistic theories to lexicography. More precisely the goal is to examine the theoretical and methodological problems raised by the lexicological treatment of verbs in bilingual dictionaries, in this case, french-korean, on a syntaxical basis, and the possible contributions of recent linguistic results to the lexicography, especially those furnished by the automatic documentary and linguistic laboratory. After having paid attention to the general evaluation of the problems, certain of the encountered difficulties have been considered in the application of the lexico-grammar. As far as equivalence is considered, the classes of verbal constructions of both studied languages have been compared to the translation postulate of "construction to construction". Through these reflections, two main directions have been drawn for modification of the structuration of the verb's article: - first of all, the dispersion of highly heterogeneous structures that are concentrated in the same structure, - and secondly, the concentration of structures of connectable usage that have been dispersed

Full textThe purpose of this research is to explore the categorization of the verbal lexicon by focusing on the relations of troponymy, a notion which is not very known or referred to in the literature of lexicology, although it helps to structure the verbal lexicon hierarchically. Verbs of Killing present an interesting case due to their number and multiplication, but also because they are little or not yet studied. The researcher will study written performances of Jordanians studying French as a foreign language at the university level. The researcher defends a position which questions the term" lexical error" among the Jordanian learners of French. Since the language they speak is a particular type of "idiosyncratic dialects", we propose an approach that could be defined in terms of communication strategies, by focusing on the use of verbs having co-troponymy relations, intra and inter areas, resulting from the associative and flexible nature of the verbal lexicon. To do this, we handle the production of unconventional statements, which means "false", in which verbs have a relationship of (co)-troponymy in terms of "degrees of truth", according to the conversational maxim of quality in P. Grice 1975

Full textSupport verbs have been studied to a great extent in the Lexicon-Grammar framework. This thesis aims at filling the gap of studies of support verb constructions in African languages, as well as that of comparative studies among languages of different families in order to validate the notion of the universality of support verbs. Indeed our research has demonstrated that support verbs do exist in Ewe, a Kwa language of the Niger-Congo family for which there had been no prior study of this notion. Moreover, a comparative study also revealed to us that support verb constructions in English, French and Ewe share certain syntax-semantic properties such as the reduction of the support verbe and its reconstruction through a relative clause. The three languages also shared the property of support verbs being agents of nominalization. However, there are also differences in these constructions. One of the differences is the fact that determination plays an important role in support verb constructions in English and French. However, determination is not an important factor in support verb constructions in Ewe. Other differences that were reflected in our thesis include the differences in number and frequency of support verb constructions (SVCs) in the tree languages, as well as differences in the interdependency links among the various elements of SVCs in the three languages. On the whole, English and French seem linguistically close and there were few syntax-semantic differences. On the other hand, Ewe displayed more differences – which supports the concept of different language-specific local grammars suggested by the Lexical-Grammar framework

Full textThe paramount stake of this research is to achieve an integrative functional model for the analysis of affective verbs in French and Arabic. I have chosen four affective verbs: two verbs of emotion (to astonish and to rage in French and their equivalent in Arabic) and two verbs of sentiment (to admire and to envy in French and their equivalent [ʔadhaʃa], [ʔaɣḍaba] in Arabic) they belong to semantic dictions of Surprise, Anger, Admiration, and Jealousy. More concretely, the analysis is shaped:- On the semantic and syntactic level: the semantic dimensions carried by verbal collocations such as to extremely astonish, to rage prodigiously in French, and [ʔaʕʒaba ʔiʕʒāban kabīran] (admire admiration big)*, [ɣaḍaba ɣaḍabaan ʃadīdan] (to rage rage extreme), and in Arabic are systematically linked to syntax (the recurrent grammatical constructions) (Hoey 2005).- On the syntactic and discursive level: the usage of passive, active and reflexive forms of affective verbs are dealt with from the perspective of informational dynamics in the sentence. (Van Valin et LaPolla 1997).From a methodological point of view, the study is based on the quantitative and qualitative approach of the verbal combination and favours the contrastive one. It is founded on the French journalistic corpus of Emobase Database (Emolex project 100 M of words) and the journalistic corpus Arabicorpus) (137 M of words).Furthermore, the thesis participates in the studies of semantic values, the syntactic and the discursive behavior of affective verbs’combinations, in Arabic and in French, which will enable to better structure the diction of emotions in relation to what is proposed by current studies in lexicography. The main results of the study can be applied in language teaching, translation, and automated processing of emotions' lexicon in the two compared languages

Full textWe are pondering over the acquisition of French as the language of education and as a second language in a multilingual situation. Our research study centers on the uses of verbs by French-speaking students. We propose some solutions for the teaching-learning of this vocabulary. The objective is to understand the verbs mainly used by secondary school pupils learning and speaking French as a second language. We have collected our corpus of analysis from pre-adolescents and adolescents in Yaoundé, Cameroon. These data were cross-checked, transcribed, processed, and coded in conformity with the processing protocol of CHILDES,( Child Language Data Exchange System). Hence the FREG command mechanically provided us with an exhaustive list of the verbs and the frequency at which they are used. These verbs were grouped according to their semantic contents after LEMMATIZATION (using the headword technique). This method enabled us to dig out the most fundamental communicative potential of the youngsters who will have to improve on, increase or organize vocabulary classes. Our analyses are concerned with the formulation phases, the conceptual and discursive levels. We are questioning the factors which influence the acquisition of verbal terms

Full textThis thesis proposes a comparative study of three support verbs, also called sometimes in English « light verbs », faire/membuat “to do”, donner/memberi “to give” and prendre/mengambil “to take” in French and Malay languages. The method used is that of the Lexicon-Grammar of Maurice Gross and that of theory of the Defining Matrix Analysis of Amr Ibrahim. Our objective is to describe the formal properties of the sentences containing support verbs in French and Malay and to compare them from the syntactic and semantic point of view. We have bracket four tests of recognition of the support verb in order to determine the statue of these three verbs in the studied construction. Our study is structured in six chapters. In the first chapter, we expose the main notion: the definition of the support and the different points of view of the linguists that took an interest in the study of the support verb in the framework of the Lexicon-Grammar. The second chapter is a general presentation of the Malay language. The third chapter is the study of the verb support “membuat/faire” (to do) in Malay. The forth chapter is a study of the support verb “memberi/donner” (to give) in Malay. The fifth chapter is a study of the support verb “mengambil/prendre” (to take) in Malay. The sixth chapter is a comparative study between the three support verbs membuat/faire (to do), memberi/donner (to give) and mengambil/prendre (to take) in Malay and French. The results obtained have shown that the support verbs in French and Malay share the same general characteristics. These results also enabled us to show that in spite of the universality of the phenomenon, each language has its own mechanism concerning the function of the support verb and the system of determination

It deals, more precisely, with feeling verbs.Because of the classification's criterions which are not that explicit, our main target is to try tounderstand their syntactic and semantic parameters, then to refine it in order to make small classes, but sharing in common the feeling expressed. Nouns and / or adjectives, morphologically connectedto verbs, and sharing the same syntactic and semantic properties, will be integrated to them. Full textItalian passive form offers a variety of choices that are hardly comparable to those of French. Apart from the canonical form essere and Past Participle, there are also the forms with venire, andare, finire, rimanere, risultare, restare, stare. The objective of this work is to understand the use of essere, venire, andare, rimanere and restare, auxiliaries of the Italian passive form, and the function of the existence of such a diversity within the framework of the Lexicon-Grammar of Maurice Gross and Amr H. Ibrahim's Methodology of Analytical Defining Matrixes (ADM).The study develops through 10 chapters. The first part introduces the state of the art on the Italian passive and the description of the chosen five auxiliaries, according to the traditional description of linguists and grammarians. The following chapters are devoted to the description of each auxiliary and the comparison of their uses. The work concludes with the synthesis of the different characteristics of passive periphrases and considerations of an aspectual-temporal order with an attempt at systematization. The aim of this work is to prove that the said auxiliaries are rarely commutable and that each of them introduces different morpho-syntactic and aspectual restrictions
Turki, Lamia. "Etude lexicologique du livre des animaux d'Al-Jahiz." Thesis, Lyon, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017LYSE2054.
Full textThis thesis concerns a lexical study of the Book of animals Al-Gâhiz in a diachronic perspective to trace the evolution of the verbal lexicon of Arabic. We adopted for this study a comparative approach between two states of language, Arabic medieval represented by the book of the animals and the modern Arab represented by Arabic-corpus.We, as part of this thesis focused our study on the verbal lexemes, they are indeed eminently relational lexical units, we have demonstrated their variational behavior of multiple meanings, both in synchrony in diachrony. The semantics of verbs is determined by syntactic sémantico-factors, relational acquiring the differential value according to construction. We have adopted a varied but essentially theoretical framework based on the theory of tropes (metaphor, metonymy), as well as the diagram of arguments developed by (J. Dichy: 1999-2000). We studied the verbs in a minimal context that is the sentence; each building containing a verbal lexeme is analyzed in a pattern of arguments. This is to clarify the possible environments for each word, specifying the syntactic constructions and indicating the semantic environments through specifiers traits. In this perspective, the argument structure has proven to be as consistent as effective tool; the syntactic organization highlights how the verb, suggesting the roles of the various elements that revolve around it. Systematic developed according to what has been described allow us to model not only the relationship between verbal constructions coexisting in synchrony called by Heine (2002) "synchronic coexistence phase" but also diachronic creation of a building from a one that already existed. We illustrate the implications of such an approach based on the changes that have suffered diachronic studied verbs, the objective being to demonstrate how buildings interact changes a verb especially in the creation of meaning. And to highlight the regularities in the change of the Arab verbal lexicon. The study of lexical or morphosyntactic variations in the texts studied, allows us to appreciate the patterns that fall in own common language of medieval, modern language, and other patterns which fall on them of the individual. In a perspective for second, to identify some aspects of language al-Gâhiz and realize its creative dynamic

Full textIn this work, we study the transformational relations between adjectival and verbal constructions in a syntactic approach. For example, a verbal sentence such as : ce travail fatigue luc is in relation with the following adjectival sentence : ce travail est fatigant pour luc. This study is composed of three parts. We, first, describe the characteristics of this type of adjectives and we deal with different problems such as the collection of these adjectives, the description of their syntactic properties etc. The second part includes the chapters 3 and 4, in which we describe the similarities and the differences between the two constructions. Syntactic and transformational regularities appear but they are not systematic, thus the construction of the lexicon-grammar of these adjectives is necessary. In the third part, which contains chapters 5 abd 6, we describe adjectival constructions that have an appropriate noun in subject position (la silhouette de line est elancee). First, we classify these nouns according to semantic criteria, then we investigate the properties of the constructions obtained with different transformations, i. E. , a nominal sentence containing a support verb (line a une silhouette elancee), a sentence in which the subject is restructurated (line est elancee de silhouette) and a metonymical sentence (line est elancee)

Full textThe purpose of this study consists in answering six questions which have to do with the notions of verb of change, causative verb and verb of action, and the use of those notions in the semantic analysis of the verb vocabulary in french and german: a) which place is occupied by the states-of-affair conceived as changes amongst the set of states-of-affair whose conceptualization is to be connected to a predication - i. E. To a pair (verb, actor-frame) - in french and in german? (see chapters i to iv) b) which linguistic means of expression are at the disposal of a speaker who intends to express an state-of-affair he conceives as a change? (see chapter ii and espe- cially chapter iv for the classification of such german resultative constructions as "hans schrie sich die kehle wund")? c) how do the semantic properties of the finite verb, the actor-frame, the tense and aspect morphems, etc. Interact, when a state-of-affair conceived as a change has to get a sentence form? (see chapter v) d) which sort of discovery procedure is to be applied in order to test the ability of a lexical item to denote a state-of-affair conceived either as an autonomous change or as a change causing event or as a change causing action? (see chapters iv and v) e) which informations about the semantic structuration of the french and the german verb vocabulary are to be obtained from the interlingual confrontation of the verbs of change in a specific semantic field? (see chapters vii to ix) f) which is the most explicit form of lexicographic representation for the results of such a contrastive analysis? (see chapters vii to ix which are devoted to the de- tailed comparative study of the semantic fields of breathing and of knowledge transmis- sion in german and in french)

Full textThis thesis proposes a study the linguistic relationships between nominal predicates and causative verbs the names of emotions and causative verbs according to the methodology established in the ANR-DFG Emolex project (www.emolex.eu). This work lies in linking linguistic descriptions of collocations V + N in the cause and didactic transposition of these constructions from the observation of the corpus, which is still little discussed in the didactic of French as a Foreign Language (FLE). We aim to meet three main objectives: 1) to identify the most "representatives" collocations in the corpus according to degree of attraction of their components, based on lexical and statistical methods ; 2) the identification of syntactic-semantic relations between their components; 3) didactic application of the results of linguistic research in a didactic perspective of FLE in particular by making mind maps. Mind maps provide innovative ways for teaching/ learning these language elements to non-native Francophone students (Cavalla et al. 2015)

Bringing out the equivalence of argument structures between these twotypes of constructions is fundamental for achieving, for example, very efficient Information Extractionsystems. Based on data from the Specialist Lexicon, we propose a reasonable prediction of the syntacticbehavior of nominal arguments, which belong to different predicate noun phrases (PNPs), when theyare in postmodifier position. This study has led us to design a set of algorithms and develop a platform,PredicateDB, to produce a lexicon of nominalizations. For each entry belonging to this lexicon, we havedefined its argument structures and achievements in PNPs whose arguments are marked by specificprepositions

Full textThe present study focuses on scientific verb constructions, i.e., the lexicon situated between general language and terminology and which is used for scientific expressions, whose rhetorical and pragmatic function must be mastered while writing scientific discourse. Based on the Corpus Pattern Analysis model, we develop a lexical resource of verb patterns using NLP techniques, which include collocations and recurring verbal constructions. The purpose of this resource is to help non-native speakers to write their academic writings in French. From an educational point of view, in order to understand better the difficulties of foreign students with regard to scientific verb constructions, we establish a diagnosis which includes the analysis of both errors and cases of overuse and underuse (notably compared to native students). The results show that both unexperienced natives and non-natives have to face difficulties related to discourse genre. In order to answer these linguistic needs, we suggest that a verb pattern resource should be integrated into corpus-based teaching of academic writing so as to help students gain autonomy in corpus manipulation

Full textFew studies have analyzed the content of justifications made at the end of a choice facing a moral dilemma, although this choice causes serious consequence for others. Several studies have shown that moral judgments were largely intuitive and, therefore, were hardly explained by individuals. However, studying the content of these rationalizations afterthought is expected to provide new information on the relationships between cognitive and emotional aspects at work in a morally difficult decision. The experimental design of this study was to ask adults to provide a judgment on a personal (Bridge) or impersonal (Switch) dilemma explaining the reasons of the direction of their choice either by oral or in writing. Several observables were developed on the nature of the deontological and utilitarian arguments and the emotional and cognitive lexicon used. The main expectation of this thesis is to show that what adults say about their choice is highly dependent on the nature of the dilemma they were submitted to, on their judgment and on the constraints making their mode of expression more or less easier. In other words, the content of their post hoc rationalization would greatly depend on the conditions under which they were produced. More precisely, the content of justifications produced by 331 participants was analyzed with an analytical grid of the deontological and utilitarian arguments and with Tropes software, enabling two scenarios of automatic counting of the emotional lexicon (EMOTAIX) and cognitive lexicon (COGNITAIX). The results show that individuals do not only produce one kind of argument (utilitarian or deontological)

Full textThe terminology related to the space science and technology (SST), corpus-based approach, is studied within the framework of the ontological structure pattern. The morpho-syntactical formation of the terminological unit, its characteristics as well as the schemata of arguments (predicative expressions and arguments) are both analyzed within the context and beyond the context. It’s characterized by a level of relative fixed structure: one of the properties of the “long” terminological unit that can often be decomposed. It can have a discursive behavior in particular, discourse anaphora, and the reduction by deletion of one of its components. In the latter case, this refers to certain aspects of the terminologization such as non-differential element falling and a characteristic or nominal element maintaining. Therefore, some aspects are constant factors which allow to highlight the diachronic evolution of the terminological unit. The outcome of the ontological structure is analyzed with the aim of describing not only the concepts of the SST, but also the use of the schemata of arguments i.e. verbal and nominal in the corpus by establishing itself on the semantic-syntactical labels. An analysis of the specialized verb was developed to supply useful information for the constitution of the multilingual terminological database or to give techno-scientific definitions. The study also allowed to describe absent verbs in the specialized dictionaries, to show how a verb can acquire a new specialized meaning, to identify the typical agent of the specialized verbs. There are two classifications of the specialized verb according to their uses and their morpho-syntactical structure were proposed as; simple verbal unit (SVU) and complex verbal unit (CVU). A syntagm involves one of the two analyzes: compositional unit or non-compositional unit. According to the situational context, the definition of the verb in LSP allowed finally to identify three meanings of the verb: very specialized verb, polysemous verb, and support verb
