On the basis of nearly 300 polonisms excerpted from the first annual of the literary political scientific monthly Varpas, meaning Bell, published in Lithuania in 1889-1906, the author reaches the conclusion that despite richness and variety, its lexis is stylistically and thematically uniform. It represents official style where formal terms from various fields - church, army and administration, prevail. In the traditional dominance of concrete vocabulary amongst dictionary borrowings, mainly referring to living conditions, the appearance of a large group of abstract notions attracts attention.

In this article, we will reflect on the problems dealing with the translation of the lexis in contemporary literary texts. We will also study how lexis is the immediate reflection of the polyphony that prevails in the current narrative. In order to do this, first of all we will analyse the characteristics of the novels currently being published in Italy. Once we have established that lexical hybridization is one of the main ways of writing in many contemporary literatures (other than Italian), we shall go on to deal with the problems that arise during the translation of non-standard lexis.<

To fill this gap in scholarship, this thesis offers a systematic analysis of Aristotle's concept of lexis by dividing it into three levels, which allow a step-by-step approach to understanding this multi-layered concept. By considering Plato's and Isocrates' thoughts on lexis, Chapter 1 outlines the intellectual context in which Aristotle's ideas on the concept of lexis developed. Abstract:
Nabokov’s prose is often purple, and looks to build itself into permanent structures, even if its run-on riffs maintain a provisional quality, a sense of forms grasped for and experimental and seeking to be adequate to a fraught and cosmopolitan history. This chapter shows that the experience of reading Nabokov (on such weighty matters as political and sexual tyranny, commercialism, nationhood, and exile) can be understood through a form of biographical criticism attentive to history and how it conditions a prose style we live through from sentence to sentence. While there have been energetic conversations in literary studies in recent years about a return to form, it remains the case that stylistic readings—intimately attentive to grammar, metre and lexis—are still relatively thin on the ground. In turning to Nabokov’s modernist artistry, this chapter looks to test the field’s changing views on the critical and contextual importance of prose style against what actually happens on the page.
