Abstract Wind farms extract energy from the lowest part of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). Thus, characterizing the impacts of atmospheric turbulence — precisely, which aspect of it enhances or hinders the capacity factor of wind farms — is currently the least understood and the most demanding topic of wind energy research. A cost effective electrodeposition technique was developed to microfabricate copper nickel alloy (CuNi)-platinum micro thermocouples. A flat smooth silicon wafer with a 9000 Å layer of oxide was chosen as the substrate material. Gold was used for the thermocouple electroplating base because of its high resistance to electrochemical corrosion and oxidation. Since gold does not adhere to the silicon substrate, a chromium layer was deposited as a seed layer for the gold deposition. The number of the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis adults caught per one LED trap exceeded 3.7 to 12.1 times the number of males caught by set of three pheromone traps supplied with pheromones of Z, E and ZE O. nubilalis races.
