Abstract:
The subject of this research is the peculiarity of syntactic constructions of Lezgain folk riddles. The object of this research is the aphoristic genre of Lezgian folklore – the riddles. Along with other folklore genres, riddles hold a remarkable place in the folklore poetics Lezgins, featuring prevalence of storytelling. The relevance the selected topic lies in the absence of specific research dedicated to comprehensive analysis of this genre of Lezgian folklore. The article illustrates the syntactic constructions of folk riddles of Lezgins. The conducted brief syntactic analysis is valuable for further research of this topic, since the linguistic aspect of studying folk riddles is yet to be explored. The scientific novelty is defined by the fact that Lezgian folk riddles, which are one of the ancient genres, require in-depth study. The conclusion is made that Lezgian folk riddles use mononuclear syntactic constructions to achieve concision in describing a propounded object or phenomenon. The interrogative or narrative sentences are commonly used. There are also riddles with compound syntactic structure. The acquired results can be used in the practical work of folklorists and linguists.

Abstract:
The article examines the concept of Vladimir F. Minorsky regarding the origin of the ethnonym “Lezgin”. A critical analysis involving additional sources challenges the version proposed by V. F. Minorsky. An attempt was also made to study the ethnonymy of Lezgins in more detail, taking into account the time periods and historical circumstances when particular ethnonyms that denote Lezgins were recorded. The study revealed new relationships between ethnonyms. In particular, the original historical form of the ethnonym was identified, which did not differ from the modern self‑name of the Lezghins.

Abstract:
The Lezgi folk mystery is one of the interesting genres of Lezgi folklore, created by the working masses for many centuries. Studying them has scientific and practical pedagogical significance. There are no special works devoted to Lezgian folk puzzles. This explains the relevance of our appeal to this genre of folklore. The object of our study is the genre diversity of Lezgian folk puzzles. The main objectives of the work are: conducting a comprehensive, diverse study of the Lezgian folk puzzles and obtaining a holistic view of them. To achieve this goal, we set and solve a number of interrelated tasks, the priority of which are: a) through the prism of folk riddles to consider individual aspects of everyday life, to show how it reflected the worldview of the simple working people in the past; b) to characterize the features and to reveal the artistic skill of the people in the creation of verbal works; c) identify the origins and basic artistic principles of Lezgi folk riddles, etc. The need for a holistic understanding of the actual, theoretical and pedagogical heritage of the Lezgian folk mystery led to historical-comparative and comparative methods of its study.

Abstract:
The article highlights the problems related to how ancient Persian culture in the Middle Ages had a powerful influence on the formation and development of folklore of the peoples of South Dagestan. Regional, ethnic, linguistic and cultural symbiosis was formed In the Derbent region, Tabasaran and Lezgistan in the V-XVIII centuries, which led the folklore of the Tabasarans, Lezgins, Azerbaijanis, resettled here Iranian-speaking Tats, Persians and Arabs to mutual enrichment and intensive development. Domestic, cultural and commercial relations led to the fact that most residents began to freely speak the “old Turkic”, Persian, Lezgin and Tabasaran languages, which ethnic groups used in communication, trade and in everyday life. The result of the influence of Persian folk and Ashug poetry on the development of the creativity of the peoples of the region can be considered the formation of a single form of genre varieties of extra-ritual lyrics and wedding poetry in the folklore of Tabasarans, Lezghins, Agulians in the form of band-quatrains. Fairy tales of the peoples of the region were also positively influenced, they were enriched by Eastern plots, themes, ideas, colorful images, Persian toponymy and vibrant poetry of genres.

Abstract:
Based on field ethnographic material using general scientific (historical-comparative, historical-typological, historical-systemic, retrospective) and special (survey, interview, participant observation) historical and ethnological research methods, the article is devoted to the description of the modern food culture of Lezgins living in rural areas Dagestan. At the same time, the natural and economic-cultural zoning (plain with lower foothills, mountains and highlands) of Lezghin settlement and the influence of this factor (ethnoecology) on food culture were taken into account. Everyday (meals), casual (hospitality), calendar (New Year, spring holidays), ritual (religious holidays), ritual (life cycle) Lezgin food was studied with a description of the types of boiled and baked flour products, dairy and meat products and their preparation for the winter. The names of the most archaic types of food, mills and baking devices among the Lezgins and the peoples of the Lezgin ethno-linguistic community coincide, which indicates that they arose before the collapse of this community in antiquity and in subsequent eras. In recent times, under the influence of urbanization and globalization, changes have occurred in the Lezgin food culture: new types of food, methods of preparing it and delivering it to the consumer have appeared. At the same time, the basic structure of nutrition, a set of dishes of everyday and ritual food, and the range of products prepared for the winter remained traditional. Despite the influence of sociocultural processes of recent decades on the material culture, it demonstrates its conservatism in the Lezgin system of mental values, which gives hope for the preservation of their ethnic, cultural and culinary identity in the era of globalization.

Abstract:
Aims and Research Questions: This paper describes the repetitive prefix in Agul (Lezgic, East Caucasian), focusing on the grammaticalization path of this morpheme. The main question to be addressed is the hypothesis that the prefix has been copied from the closely related Lezgian language. Approach, Data and Analysis: Firstly, I provide a detailed description of the morphology and semantics of the repetitive prefix (‘again’, ‘back’) in comparison to the system of locative prefixes in Agul, showing that despite the formal similarity with the ‘post’-localization prefix (meaning ‘behind’), the repetitive prefix is distinct both functionally and paradigmatically. I then compare the repetitive and ‘post’-prefix in Agul with their counterparts in Lezgian and other Lezgic languages. Findings/Conclusions: While the relation of the meaning ‘behind’ to ‘again’ is cross-linguistically common, the development of a special repetitive prefix in Agul is only attested in the two southern dialects, whose speakers have been in long-term contact with Lezgian – a language that possesses a productive repetitive prefix/infix. It is thus natural to assume that the Agul prefix has a contact-induced origin. I also show that this is not the only grammatical phenomenon of southern Agul that has been influenced by Lezgian. Originality and Significance: The morphological properties and functions of the repetitive prefix in Agul have not been described in detail before. The conclusion that this prefix is a morphological copy is remarkable, because Lezgian is one of the two languages most closely genetically related to Agul, and also because the borrowing of the prefix has led to the emergence of affixal ‘etymological doublets’ in Agul. Limitations: It remains to be investigated to what extent ‘post’-prefixes in other Lezgic languages show signs of grammaticalization towards repetitive prefixes, and also whether the two markers can become paradigmatically distinct, as with Agul.

The Lezgian language is one of the languages of the Lezgian subgroup of the Dagestan group of Iberian—Caucasian languages. The Lezgian language belongs to the aggluti-native-inflectional morphological type. Native speakers of the Lezgian language occu-py the southeastern part of Dagestan and the northern part of Azerbaijan. Until 1928, the Lezgins used writing on an Arabic graphic basis. Then the writing was translated into Latin graphic basis, and in 1938 an alphabet based on Russian graphics was adopted, which still functions today. Long before the 20th century, the Lezgins to a cer-tain extent used writing in Arabic, which served as the language of religion, science and enlightenment.

Abstract:
The object of this research is the concept of “life” as an existential basis of poetic consciousness. The subject of this research is the poetry of the prominent Lezgin author Aziz Alem. The article traces the sociocultural realities that determined the existential grounds of Lezgin poetry in the 1960’s – 1980’s; examines the transformational state of ethnopoetic consciousness of the Lezgins, referred to the ontological problems of human existence. The analysis of poems reveals the artistic means and principles of realization of the concept of “life” in Aziz Alem’s poetry. The set objectives are attained within the framework of research approaches based on the cultural-historical, comparative, and analytical methods of humanistic thought. Such approaches suggest presence of a strong theoretical framework that ensures optimal structuring of value-semantic dominants of life environment of the Lezgin poet. The main conclusion lies in the statement that sociocultural processes of the 1960’s – 1980’s define the possibility for rationalization of mental structures of ethnopoetic spirit, which resulted in mainstreaming of “eternal” problems at the time of supremacy of the Communist ideology.

Abstract:
Georgian and Russian military cooperation in 1783-1787 constituted one of the major factors in the South Caucasian political history of the period. Two Russian regular Jäger battalions deployed in the Kingdom of Kartl-K’akheti at the disposal of Irakli II contributed to both the defensive and offensive potential of this Georgian state but also alienated and embittered its Muslim subjects, allies, and neighbours. This article is devoted to the military analysis of one of the major military campaigns of this period: the Georgian-Russian offensive against Ch’ar-Belakani, culminating in the battle at Mughanlo ford over the Alazani river on 14 November 1784. Having analyzed the military campaign and the battle as well as various factors predetermining the eventual outcome, we confirmed that the Allied victory was a tactical one at its best and had no lasting effects, perhaps only for encouraging Irakli II. On the other hand, it presumably diagnosticated the generally precarious political and military stance of the Kingdom of Kartl-K’akheti after resigning to the Russian Empire in 1783, despite the more or less candid at this stage albeit limited attempts of Russian authorities to give support to their transcaucasian vassal. We would conclude that the October 1784 campaign, including the Mughanlo battle, has a significant historiographic value highlighting many principal aspects of the Georgian-Russian military confrontation with the Lezgis in 1783-1787, as well as the military history of the Kingdom of Kartl-K’akheti in general.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter aims at giving a survey on vowel harmony (VH) in the Caucasian languages. We found that VH is attested only in the East Caucasian languages and that there is no in-depth study of this phenomenon. Based on the fragmentary data discussed in individual language grammars/journal articles, one can conclude that VH exists to some extent in almost all languages of the Lezgic group. Four Lezgic languages receive special attention: Lezgian, Tabasaran, Aghul, and Khinalug. Both progressive and regressive labial, palatal, and height harmony are attested in both nouns and verbs. The data of these four languages indicate that VH is predominantly stem-controlled. It is sensitive to stress placement and can be blocked by secondary consonantal articulations. Further investigation is needed to determine if VH results from contact with the Azeri language or language-internal developments.

Imangulov, Linar, Sergey Safronov, and Maria Savoskul. "POST-SOVIET TRANSFORMATION OF RURAL DAGESTAN UNDER SOCIETY MODERNIZATION AND GLOBALIZATION." In Book of Abstracts and Contributed Papers. Geographical Institute "Jovan Cvijić" SASA, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.46793/csge5.46li.

Abstract:
The report will highlight the post-Soviet features of the transformation of rural areas of one Russian mountainous agricultural region with high ethnocultural population diversity, using the example of the Republic of Dagestan. Data sources: open statistical databases, field studies, and interview results. To collect data, the authors of the report organized five expeditions in 2020–2024, surveyed 12 districts, and more than 100 settlements. Transformation processes in the mountainous territories of Dagestan occur under the influence of natural-geographical and center-peripheral factors of transformation, as well as the incomplete demographic transition of the population in combination with the increased role of ethnic traditionalism. Along with common features characteristic of other regions of Russia (for example, depopulation, increased mobility of the population), the transformation of rural areas of Dagestan has its own characteristics. The high intraregional diversity of rural areas is associated with different combinations of territorial characteristics. For example, the orographic diversity of Dagestan complicates the center-periphery picture typical of the lowland regions of Russia. Along with suburban municipalities, other prosperous rural municipalities are also distinguished—foothill areas and some mid-mountain basins. In the first, there is an opportunity to engage in agriculture and other activities, and secondly, there is a migration influx of people from high mountain settlements. The article presents a map with natural and socio-economic types of rural areas of Dagestan and describes scenarios for the socio-economic transformation of rural areas using the example of key areas of the main macro-regions. Scenarios for the transformation of rural areas: “inertial” and “modernization”. Ethnocultural and religious factors are responsible for the preservation and reproduction of traditional social connections and relationships. They affect the stability of rural settlement, population dynamics, and reproduction of communities. For example, the mountainous Avar regions of northwestern Dagestan have a stable number of permanent residents and real post-Soviet population growth. In the predominantly Lezgin regions of Southern Dagestan, the situation is different and similar mechanisms work much weaker. Scenarios for the rural areas transformation demonstrate the clear juxtaposition of the archaization processes and modernization of the economy and society in the republic.
