Full textSince the discovery of the Higgs boson at a mass around 125 GeV by both ATLAS and CMS collaborations in July 2012, it became crucial to measure its properties, such as its couplings to fermions, and unravel any deviations from the Standard Model (SM) predictions. The top quark Yukawa coupling is the strongest in the fermionic sector and one of the best probes to shed light on phenomena beyond the SM. The Higgs boson production in association with a pair of top quarks and its subsequent decay into a pair of bottom quarks, ttH(H->bb), grants direct access to this coupling in addition to the bottom quark Yukawa coupling. Although the ttH production was recently established by both ATLAS and CMS combining several channels including ttH(H->bb), the latter has never been observed directly. The complexity of the ttH(H->bb) final state with a large number of b-jets, and the overwhelming background of the top pair production with additional jets (tt+jets), especially b-jets (ttbb), are the major challenges of this channel. Thus, b-jet identification referred to as b-tagging, and the control of the ttbb background are key ingredients for this analysis. This thesis presents the search for ttH(H->bb) performed with 36.1 /fb of LHC data collected by the ATLAS detector in 2015 and 2016. Novel techniques to improve the search sensitivity with full Run 2 data are also developed. Particularly, detailed studies are presented including a differential cross-section measurement of the main ttbb background. The optimization of the b-tagging algorithms in view of the High Luminosity LHC upgrade, after the replacement of the ATLAS inner detector, is also presented

Full textThe essential purpose of the thesis is to measure the top pair cross section in lepton+jets channels in the Atlas experiment at Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The analysis is using the proton-proton collision data at 7 TeV collected in 2010 with a luminosity of 33.7 pb-1. The event selection is based on the signature of ttbar topology with 1 electron or muon, large missing transverse energy and at least 4 jets. The QCD multijet background is measured with the data driven “Matrix Method”. Three data driven methods are applied to measure the W+jets background, the charge asymmetry method, the Berends Scaling method and the method combining both. Other backgrounds are estimated from MC.The number of signal ttbar events are obtained by fitting the distribution of the number of b-tagged jet, when the b-tagging efficiency is simultaneously fitted. The ttbar cross section is measured to be 148.1±34.9 pb. It is consistent with the Standard Model prediction at NNLO calculated by Hathor tool. It also agrees with the measurements from other methods. With more collision data in 2011, one can expect a more precise measurement on ttbar cross section

Full textMeasurements of di-boson production cross-sections are an important part of the physics programme at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. These physics analyses provide the opportunity to probe the electroweak sector of the Standard Model at the TeV scale and could also indicate the existence of new particles or probe beyond the Standard Model physics. The excellent performance of the LHC through years 2011 and 2012 allowed for very competitive measurements. This thesis provides a comprehensive overview of the experimental considerations and methods used in the measurement of the W⁺W⁻ production cross-section in proton-proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV and 8 TeV. The treatise covers the material in great detail, starting with the introduction of the theoretical framework of the Standard Model and follows with an extensive discussion of the methods implemented in recording and reconstructing physics events in an experiment of this magnitude. The associated online and offline software tools are included in the discussion. The relevant experiments are covered, including a very detailed section about the ATLAS detector. The final chapter of this thesis contains a detailed description of the analysis of the W-pair production in the leptonic decay channels using the datasets recorded by the ATLAS experiment during 2011 and 2012 (Run I). The analyses use 4.60 fb⁻¹ recorded at √s = 7 TeV and 20.28 fb⁻¹ recorded at 8 TeV. The experimentally measured cross section for the production of W bosons at the ATLAS experiment is consistently enhanced compared to the predictions of the Standard Model at centre-of-mass energies of 7 TeV and 8 TeV. The thesis concludes with the presentation of differential cross-section measurement results

Full textThis thesis presents a measurement of the cross section of t-channel single top-quark production using 1.04~fb^{-1} data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC with proton-proton collision at center-of-mass sqrt(s)=7TeV. Selected events contain one lepton, missing transverse energy, and two or three jets, one of them b-tagged. The background model consists of multijets, W+jets and top-quark pair events, with smaller contributions from Z+jets and diboson events. By using a cut and count method based on the distribution of a multivariate discriminant constructed with the boosted decision trees, the cross section of t-channel single top-quark production is measured: sigma_{t}= 97.3^{+30.7}_{-30.2}~pb, which is in good agreement with the prediction of the Standard Model. Assuming that the top-quark-related CKM matrix elements obey the relation |Vtb|>>|Vts|, |V_td|, the coupling strength at the W-t-b vertex is extracted from the measured cross section, |Vtb| = 1,23^{+0,20}_{-0,19}. If it is assumed that |Vtb|<1, a lower limit of |Vtb|>0.61 is obtained at the 95% confidence level

Full textThe main subject of the thesis is the measurement of the production cross section of the Higgs boson decaying to two Z bosons in the four-lepton final state (H →ZZ * → 4l, l = e, μ), using 36.1 fb- 1 of data recorded during 2015 and 2016 with the ATLAS experiment installed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. The inclusive fiducial cross section in the H → ZZ * → 4l decay channel is measured to be 3.62 ± 0.53 (stat) ± 0.25 (syst) fb,in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 2.91 ± 0.13 fb. Several differential fiducial cross sections are measured for observables sensitive to the Higgs-boson production and decay, including kinematic distributions of the jets produced together with the Higgs boson. Good agreement is found between the data and the predictions of the Standard Model. The extracted cross-section distributions are also used to constrain anomalous Higgs-boson interactions with Standard-Model particles. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to the muon isolation. Isolation variables, based on information from the tracker (track-based isolation) and the calorimeters (calorimeter-based isolation) measure the ambient activity surrounding a particle in the detectors and are a powerful tool to reject background objects. Using36.1 fb-1 of data recorded by ATLAS in 2015 and2016, the variable distributions are compared with simulation. Working points are then defined as sets of cuts applied to the isolation variables. Using theZ boson decays to a pair of muons, the signal efficiency of the working points is calculated. Scale factors are then derived as ratio of efficiencies measured in data over simulation. The good agreement leads to scale factors close to one

Full textThis thesis presents a measurement of W+W- production cross section with the pp collision data collected at the ATLAS detector in the year of 2015. The dataset corresponds to a centre-of-mass collision energy of √s = 13 TeV with a total integrated luminosity of 3.16 fb-1. The W+W- signal events are selected using a signature where one of the W bosons decays into an electron and an electron neutrino while the other produces a muon with an associated muon neutrino. The measured cross section in the chosen fiducial phase space close to detector acceptance is σ (fiducial, W+W-) = 529 ± 20 (stat.) ± 50 (syst.) ± 11 (lumi.) fb. The result within the assigned uncertainties is compatible with the best available Standard Model prediction of 478 ± 17 fb. The observed kinematic spectrums of the produced leptons from the decay of the two W bosons are further investigated to study the triple gauge boson couplings at the WWγ und WWZ vertices. The deviation of these couplings from the Standard Model can probe the existence of new physics. The confidence intervals have been calculated for the parameters representing these anomalous couplings. The observations are consistent with the Standard Model expectations.

Full textThis thesis presents the cross-section measurement of top quark pair (tt) production in association with additional b-jets (tt+b-jets) in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy, √s = 13 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis is performed in the emu decay channel of tt using a dataset comprising an integrated luminosity of 36.1/fb collected by the ATLAS detector in the years 2015 and 2016. The cross-sections are measured at particle level in a fiducial phase space which is chosen close to the detector acceptance. The fiducial inclusive cross-section for tt final states with at least one and at least two additional b-jet(s) is measured to be 177 ± 5(stat) ± 24(syst) fb and 25 ± 3(stat) ± 7(syst) fb, respectively, after subtracting the contributions from ttH(bb) and ttZ(bb). Comparison of the measured cross-section to various state-of-the-art theoretical QCD predictions are made. The measured inclusive fiducial cross-sections generally exceed the ttbb predictions from various NLO matrix element calculations matched to a parton shower but are compatible within the uncertainties. The experimental uncertainties in the measurement are smaller than the uncertainties in the predictions. The differential measurement of tt+b-jets is carried out for the first time by the ATLAS collaboration in this analysis. The normalised differential cross-sections as a function of b-jet multiplicity, kinematic observables of the events and properties of b-jet pairs are shown. The observed differential distributions are compared with multitude of theoretical predictions and a good agreement with data is found for most of them.

Full textThe Standard Model is the current theory used to describe the elementary particles and their fundamental interactions (except the gravity). My PhD within the ATLAS experiment put this model under test using objects called jets, to study final state particles that interact through the strong force. First, I contributed to a method of jet calibration aiming at calibrating the energy scale of jets in the forward region of the detector with respect to central region. I improved the calibration by making it faster and more precise. Next, I worked on a search analysis of new physics using events with two jets. The Standard Model predicts a smooth distribution of the invariant mass of di-jets, hence we search for a bump which could come from a new particle. Since no significant bump is found, we put limits on signals as predicted by Beyond Standard Model theories and on model-independent signals. Last, I developed a new physics analysis measuring the leading (highest in transverse momentum) jet differential cross-section as a function of transverse momentum and rapidity. The challenge was to factorize the detector effects (resolution and acceptance) from the observable, which I did using a new unfolding technique. I also worked on the theoretical predictions calculation which was very challenging to perform and needed the implementation of special regularizations. The measurement and the predictions are then compared and tensions are observed due to the difficulties of theoretical predictions calculation

Full textThe work reported in this thesis is aimed at measuring the cross section of electroweak single top quark production in association with a W boson, a process also referred to as Wt-channel. The interest in this production mechanism relies in the confirmation of the Standard Model predictions together with the possibility of identifying new physics phenomena when comparing its cross section with the one of the other single top production modes (the t- and s-channel.) After providing a general introduction on the physics of the top quark and a description of the experimental setup employed for the detection and the reconstruction of the physics objects, the analysis of 4.7 femtobarn of proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in the year 2011, is presentedSince the Wt channel production rate at the LHC is considerably smaller than its main background, a chi-squared based kinematic fit has been developed to help the identification of the signal events allowing the use of simultaneous mass constraints from the W boson and the top quark populating the final states. The chi-squared value in each event is then used as a parameter to rank the event in terms of its probability to match or not the signal hypothesis and a cut on its value is used to implement a first tight event selection. The final selection step consists of requiring that the system composed by the top quark and the W boson reconstructed by the fit is balanced in the transverse plane. The measurement is found to be dominated by the systematic uncertainties which affect it by an amount close to 100% of the cross section value.

Full textThis thesis presents a first measurement of the exclusive cross section for the reaction photon-photon-> di-leptons in proton-proton collisions at center of mass energy of 7 TeV in the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The measurement is realized with all data accumulated during the year 2011 with an integrated luminosity of 4.6/fb. The first part of the thesis is dedicated to the theoretical description of this kind of interactions. The calculus of the amplitude for the reaction photon-photon-> di-leptons is well known in the context of the standard model of particle physics. However, the situation at the LHC is more complex. It requires taking into account the finite size effects of the protons. The understanding of this effect and its evaluation is one of my personal contributions, which has been published. The nominal cross section is then reduced by about 20% following this effect, which is non negligible. The second part of the thesis concerns the description of the detectors of the ATLAS experiment. In particular, I describe the work I have realized on the simulation of some of these devices, mainly the detectors located in the direction of flight of the protons that allows a measurement of the trajectory of the scattered (intact) protons. Finally, the last part of the thesis is devoted to the experimental measurement of the cross section of the reaction photon-photon-> di-leptons in proton-proton collisions, as mentioned above. When the lepton pair is a pair of muons, we find an exclusive cross section of 0.628 ± 0.032(stat) ± 0.021(syst) pb, for the kinematical domain M(di-muons)>20 GeV, pT(muons)>10 GeV and |muons|<2.4. When the lepton pair is a pair of electrons (positrons), we have obtained an exclusive cross section of 0.428 ± 0.035(stat) ± 0.018(syst) pb, for M(ee)>24 GeV, pT(e)>12 GeV et |muons(e)|<2.4. Moreover, these measurements confirm that the reduction (suppression) factor with respect to the nominal theory prediction (without taking into account the finite size effect of the protons) is of the order of 20% in the energy domain of the measurement. A perspective for this work is to make the measurement at larger energy with the new data recorded by the ATLAS experiment since 2015. Moreover, a direct measurement of the trajectory of protons could help for the exclusive selection

Full textThis doctoral thesis presents three measurements of the top quark-antiquark pair production cross section in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7TeV recorded in 2010 and 2011 with the ATLAS Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Events are selected in the single lepton topology by requiring an electron or muon, large missing transverse momentum and at least three jets. While one analysis relies on kinematic information only to discriminate the top quark-antiquark pair signal from the background processes, the other two also make use of b-tagging information. With the help of multivariate methods the most precise measurements in this topology are obtained. This is for two of the measurements in particular possible due to the use of a profile likelihood method which is studied in detail. For the first time a fiducial inclusive cross section measurement for top quark events is performed allowing a measurement almost independent of theoretical uncertainties. All measurements are in agreement with theory predictions performed in perturbation theory at approximate NNLO.

Full textThe Standard Model of particle physics is very successful in describing elementary particles and their interactions with a great precision. It describes three of the four known fundamental interactions between elementary particles : the weak, the strong and the electromagnetic interactions. The Standard Model also provides an accurate description of the electroweak interactions up to energy scales that have been explored in high energy physics experiments. The interaction and decay of a large number of particles discovered and observed throughout different experiments in the last 50 years are also described. Despite its great success, the Standard Model falls short of being a complete theory of fundamental interactions because it does not incorporate the full theory of gravitation as described by general relativity, or predict the accelerating expansion of the universe (as possibly described by dark energy). The theory does not contain any viable dark matter particle that possesses all of the required properties deduced from observational cosmology. It also does not account for neutrino oscillations (and their non-zero masses). It is thought that new physics should exist leading to new particles and phenomena. The scale at which this new physics should appear is not well known, though several arguments point to the TeV scale and require a very high energy and powerful hadron collider. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the biggest existing particle accelerator and collider. It is designed to provide proton-proton collisions with an unprecedented center-of-mass energy of 14 TeV, with instantaneous luminosities up to 10^{34} cm−2s−1

Full textThis thesis studies pp collisions at sqrt{s}=8 TeV with pairs of photons in the final state, as collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC during 2012. The diphoton final state has proven to be crucial to the discovery of the Higgs boson. The motivation for searching for additional resonances decaying into two photons is very strong due to many models predicting an extended Higgs sector. At the same time, detailed measurements of diphoton cross sections are necessary to establish the quality of the theoretical predictions currently available for these processes. The measurement of photons by ATLAS relies on an excellent calibration of the electromagnetic calorimeter response. For this reason, studies related to the calibration of the photon response in the ATLAS Liquid Argon (LAr) calorimeter are initially performed, including a measurement of the calorimeter layer energy scale relative calibration using photons, and the potential need of an inter-calibration of the photon energy response as a function of the azimuthal angle $phi$. A study of noise performance of the calorimeter in high pile-up conditions is also presented, resulting in recommendations for the LAr pulse sampling configurations for Run2.A search for an additional resonance decaying into two photons is performed, leading to no significant excess being observed. A limit on the fiducial cross section times branching fraction of a new resonance decaying into two photons is therefore computed. The measurement of the production cross section of isolated prompt diphoton in association with jets is performed as a function of the diphoton invariant mass, the transverse momentum of the diphoton system, the azimuthal angle difference of the two photons and the coplanarity angle theta, for jet multiplicity categories and as a function of various jet variables. The results are compared to the latest Next-To-Leading-Order QCD predictions. Such a measurement has not been previously published at the LHC

Full textThe Standard Model of elementary particle physics is a quantum field theory describing the fundamental particles which constitute matter and the interactions between them. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Geneva was built with the intention of testing various Standard Model predictions, by providing proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energies never recorded before. The ATLAS detector is one of the four particle experiments constructed at the LHC. It is designed to reconstruct particles and their decay products originating from these collisions. The technical part of this thesis is related to the ATLAS pixel detector which provides a precise measurement of tracks next to the interaction point. This is important for the identification of particle jets which originate from bottom quarks. We present an analysis of the pixel cluster properties using cosmic rays data collected in 2008. The main part of this work is dedicated to the study of the effect of online pixel threshold that impacts especially the charge, the size and the position of main clusters associated to tracks at high incidence angle, with data and Monte Carlo. We performed also one of the first measurements of the b-jet production cross section in proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector. It is the second analysis presented in this document. A differential b-jet production cross section was measured with the 2010 dataset recorded by the ATLAS detector, using muons in jets to estimate the fraction of b-jets. The measurement is in good agreement with the Standard Model QCD predictions

Full textThis thesis presents a measurement of the SM WW production cross section and the determination of the corresponding limits on anomalous triple gauge boson couplings (aTGCs), using the 2011 4.7 fb⁻¹ pp collisions data at 7 TeV collected in 2011. The measurement allows for a stringent test of the non-Abelian SU(2) X U(1) SM electroweak sector and probes new physics that could manifest itself through aTGCs that may alter the observed production cross section or kinematic distributions. This measurement also provides a good understanding of the irreducible background in searches for the Higgs boson through the H → W⁺W⁻ decay channel. This thesis work has laid a solid foundation for further measurements of the WW production with the ∼25 fb⁻¹ integrated luminosity 8 TeV recorded data expected by the end of 2012, which will further improve the precision and yield more stringent limits on the aTGCs
