Full textThe free will controversy has revolved for over three centuries on a dualism opposing determinists and libertarians, whose outcome is an antinomy between two (allegedly) complementary positions, neither of which seems capable of accounting for the requisites that are commonly associated to the inner perception of free will. As a way out of the deadlock, I propose to introduce the notion of temporal perspective : a free act can only be appreciated as such if it is viewed before occurring; building on this idea, I sketch out a conception of freedom as creation of reality and self-transcendence of the subject; such a conception has its fullest expression in the image of a conscious thought constantly overcoming its own limits

Full textThis work has as main objectives, besides offering a translation of the first part of the De libero arbitrio libri tres of Augustine of Hippo, undertake a study of the three books, in its different aspects, rhetorical and philosophical. The De libero arbitrio, in spite of its sense of unity, has specific characteristics in each of its three parts. Book I, predominantly influenced by Stoicism, shows itself a dialog; book II, although maintaining the same dialogical structure, shows, nevertheless, evident Neoplatonic characteristics. If the two first parts may be called dialectical, the third, however, is the object of a severe metamorphosis, as in its dispositio, when Augustine resigns the cross-examination form to undertake a long uninterrupted discourse; as in its elocutio, when he adopts a style that undoubtedly makes clear a change not only in his auditory, but in his thought as well. The De libero arbitrio, then, in its third book becomes at a certain point a theological work, in which the Platonic-Socratic comprehension of the world of the young Augustine (of the first two books) yields to a more Christianized view, much influenced by the theology of the apostle Paul, which sustains a less optimistic image of man as a autonomous being, capable of raising himself through his free choice of the will. This remarkable conceptual change, in its discursive and philosophical aspects, shows a still deeper mutation, a kind of \"turning point\", not only in the works and life of the man, no longer the philosopher, but the presbyter of Hippo; no longer the Neoplatonic thinker, but the Doctor of the Church; but also a \"turning point\" to the epoch, delimiting, to a certain extent, the end of a civilization, the end of Antiquity, with the overthrow of the classical view of man and the consequential beginning of the mediaeval era.

Full textThe thesis aims to address the question of the origins of free verse in France and in Italy from a comparative perspective. It consists of four chapters, the first two concerning historical and theoretical problems, while the others two contain textual analysis. Chapter I starts from the observation of the different approach to the study of free verse by French and Italian scholars and it provides an historical and critical overview of the development of metrical studies in France between the XIX and the XX century and of changes in the theory and in the perception of verse during this period. This allows to develop the comparison between French and Italian studies about some important theoretical problems: the metrical nature of free verse, the distinction between verse and prose, the value of découpage and enjambement in defining the verse. Chapter II investigates some particular aspects of the complex relation between poetry translation, prose poetry and free verse in XIX century literature, which reflects the evolution in the idea of poetry and verse. The experiments in poetry translation and prose poetry, as well as the metrical reforms which are proposed in France and in Italy in the second half of the century (including Carducci’s “metrica barbara”), and the influence of Whitman’s poetry, cause the emergence of poetic forms which are preludes to free verse. Chapter III and IV concern some of the first French and Italian free-verse poets and propose an analysis of their first poems in free verses. The French poets examined in chapter III are Jules Laforgue, Gustave Kahn, Jean Moréas, Jean Ajalbert, Albert Mockel, Édouard Dujardin, Francis Vielé-Griffin. The Italian poets presented in chapter IV are Luigi Capuana, Giovanni Alfredo Cesareo, Gian Pietro Lucini, Alberto Sormani, Mario Morasso, Ada Negri, Romolo Quaglino, Agostino John Sinadino, Umberto Saffiotti, Angiolo Orvieto.

In the two protagonists' personality, and in the reasons implied in their intellectual work, there is a fair appreciation of the human and professional relationship passed between the author and his publisher starting from the early 70's, a time of important changes in the company structure, which ends with the sell of the brand name in 1973. It's due to the publisher's undisputed desire to be the centre of attention the peculiarity of the relationship with the author form the Marche (to his friend Valentino he entrusted the reprint of his past works and also the print of the future ones), a relationship that adds important particulars to the reconstruction of many aspects; the letters show especially, among joys and disillusions, moods and confessions that explain, in a clear way, Bigiaretti's creative and inner development in the more mature phase oh his narrative experience, that led to new results above all from the expressive point of view. The large number of references, in the exchange of letters, to Bigiaretti's writing and poetics – in a continuous comparison with Bompiani, faithful confidant and charmed reader – find a correspondence in the drafts (in Bigiaretti's own hand) of the analyzed novels, proving, at the same time, the author's strenuous labour limae.

Full textThe research carried out has wanted to go into the possibility offered by the system of growing of double curtain vineyards (GDC) and in a free cordon referring to mechanization. The research has examined the operations of winter pruning, canopy management (removal of suckers, trimming, defoliation, and shoots positioning) and grape harvesting. The winter pruning was especially monitored through two different levels of mechanization. All the operations have been carried out, both manually and mechanically, comparing the times of working, the quality of the work effected and the engagement of manpower employed. The results have been synthesized under an economic valuation, supposing different levels of the cost of the employed manpower, in order to obtain to judge the suitability on the single interventions and to build a complete and more organic valuation of the proposed kind of work. In the two forms of growing, the mechanization of both the winter pruning and canopy management have respected completely the prefixed technical aims, showing to be a valid way in order both to reduce times and cost of management. For these interventions the purchase of machineries turns out to be suitable also for vineyards of small dimension. Even more evident in both these forms of growing are the economic advantages offered by the mechanized grape harvesting effected by few ill-treatments and wastes of product. The tendency to mechanize completely the interventions of management of the growing cycle of vineyards, can be in the next years both a reason of interest and of a choice in carrying out new installations with both these forms of growing that shown to be a complete expression of synergy between machinery and plant.

Full textThis dissertation intends see the occurrence of the itinerary of souls ascension in the knowledge of truth and science, according to the description given in De libero arbitrio, with suport in the parallels lectures presents in the dialogues De ordine and De quantitate animae, composed in the Augustines Cassissiacum - Rome period (386-396 AD). Referring to intelectual ascension exposted in Book II of De libero arbitrio, and based on the notions of driving/guide and judgment/institution, in the rational way, we verified like the itinerary of the soul in probatory knowledge of divine reality shows, in addition to climbing \"hierarchical elevation\" of a sensibility to God, the knowledge of how the movement of factoring of reality known in eternity, as the reason rests and is founded on the eternal and unchangeable truth, and every cognitive act is driven/oriented and award/established by reason, which, ultimately, is equivalent to saying that eternity is known totals in this reality, precisely in the temporal instant that one recognizes any knowledge as true. For this purpose, it is to see how, at each level of knowledge on the rise, the next step is supposed to - actually contains and makes up reasons it - the previous, so that the subsequent necessary step and permanently, ratifies and awards the previous step. And just like the instant, by introducing the temporal totality, is like a previous or figuration of eternity, also knowledge and totals rising figure the absoluteness truthfulness through the immediate perception - and its perennially simultaneous factoring - the totality of universal and harmonious ordering of beings (De ordine); the functionality of the imaginative act in this concomitance observed between sensitives perceptions and interiority (De quantitate animae); as well as the aforesaid acts of conduct and judgment made in making of universal knowledge (De libero abitrio)

Full textThe purpose of this study is defined by understanding the relationship between divine law and human law conceived by Augustine in On Free Choice of the Will, book I, and The City of God, book XIX. Thus, we aim first to analyse the relation among the two laws in the dialogue, then comparing it with the analysis from The City of God by checking possible implications of a reformulation in the understanding of politics for Augustine. As such, we intend to show how Augustine reformulated his thought about the two laws and the consequences of such a change in notions as justice, peace, State, war and slavery

Full textThe question about evil became a continual restlessness through out Augustine’s life. His thought is characterized by so many influences, above all the Manichaean and Neoplatonic doctrines. However, the answers offered by such philosophies didn’t fulfill the Hipponensis restless mind. The attempt to answer this question occur later in his life, in On Free Choice of the Will, book in which Augustine tries to face, with Evodius, the moral evil origin question, connecting it to human will. In this master dissertation, we aim to show how the Hippo bishop tries to free God from being the evil creator, reasoning that the cause of evil presence in the world comes from free will misuse, inasmuch as taking it by itself, this will attribute is a good and a gift from Creator to men.

Full textThe manuscript presents the study that led to the design, implementation and testing of an innovative system for the direct measurement, in the laboratory, of the bed shear stress of flows in open channel. The related analysis has been intended at exploring the possibility of providing a new tool to survey research, especially in the context of the erosion of the bed during the events known as debris flow. In facts, the shear stress between the debris flow and the ground over which it propagates, is now recognized as one of the key parrrameters that affect the most dynamic local and global motion (Iverson 2010). However, experimental resarch has not sufficiently investigated this aspect. The electromechanical system presented in this work earned, therefore, the purpose to make a contribution to this survey... [edited by Author]

Full textThis doctoral thesis studies the free indirect style in Pasolini's works through a double path of research. On one hand it takes into account his literary and cinematic production; on the other it studies the linguistic and semiotic principles on which its free indirect style hinges. This double path has been crossed in the light of four notions that Pasolini developed in his theoretical essays along his artisticactivity. The first one is the “regression”, elaborated in the 40s in order to describe the usage of the Friulian dialect of his early poems. The second one is the “sentimental connection”, which Pasolini discovered in Gramsci's Prison Notebooks and he employed to analyse the relationship between intellectuals and subaltern classes. The third one concerns the free indirect discourse used in Pasolini's Roman novels of the 50s and studied from a linguistic and semiotic point of view in some essays. The last one is the free indirect subjective theorised in the 60s to describe the cinematic adaptation of the free indirect style.Regression, sentimental connection, free indirect discourse and free indirect subjective are the most important notions of Pasolini's free indirect style. They show how the author established itslinguistic, political and sentimental relationship with the subalterns that populates his literary works aswell as his movies

Full textObjectives: To evaluate the best way for functional restoration of the fibular flap "single strut", after wide resections for oral cavity malignancy. Methods: Out of 62 mandibular reconstructions using fibular flap during a five-year period, 11 cases were selected for rehabilitation by implant supported dental prosthesis. 6 cases were treated without any further surgical procedure but implantology (group 1), overcoming the fibular height deficiency by prosthodontics, while the remainder underwent to distraction osteogenesis before dental restoration (group 2). The fibular/mandibular height discrepancy was recorded. The evaluation criteria included x-rays and clinical measurement of perimplant bone and gum (skin) level and reported satisfaction of the patients, as recorded by a questionnaire. Results: All 11 of the prosthetic rehabilitations were obtained by screw retained fixed prosthesis. The average age was 52; the male/female ratio was 6/5. The average number of implants placed into the fibula was five. The maximum observation follow-up period after loading was two 30 months for the group 1 and 38.5 (17-81) months on average for the group 2. There were no reports of surgical complications. No implant loss were recorded in the group 1, the mean peri-implant bone loss was 1,5 mm. In the group 2 one case of vector lingual tipping during consolidation phase and a fracture of basal fibula cortex with no bone formation were noted. The mean vertical bone gain was 13.6 (12-15) mm. Four implants on thirty-two (12.5%) were lost during the follow-up period. The mean peri-implant bone resorption was 2.5 mm. Conclusions: The solutions used for overcoming fibular height deficiency included: harvesting the iliac crest, the fixation of the flap in an ideal position from a prosthetic viewpoint, the utilization of the "double-barrel" technique, the vertical distraction osteogenesis. Our experience concerns the fibular osteocutaneous free flap that we utilize in oral malignancy as a "single strut flap" because we prefer to preserve the whole length of the pedicle. Both orthopaedic dental prosthesis and vertical distraction osteogenesis are good solutions in order to overcame the fibular height deficiency. The first is based on the same biomechanics of the dental prosthesis on short implants having a comparable crown/implant ratio, DO procedure applied on fibulas, although it seems to be impaired by a remarkable number of complications and a relevant bone resorption around implants, still constitute a good option especially in case of wide fibular/mandibular height discrepancy. What is very important is the right choice of the therapeutic path after an accurate examination of each case. The criteria of selection from our experience are done.
