Abstract:
Objective: To demonstrate the value of the East Tennessee State University Quillen College of Medicine Library to library users using the vehicle of National Medical Librarians Month. Methods: A descriptive analysis of techniques used to enhance the value of the East Tennessee State University Quillen College of Medicine Library in the eyes of its parent organization and users. Interventions undertaken were exposure on television, a barbeque for students, a library exhibit fair patterned after conference exhibits in which all major facets of library services were presented using handouts and posters of the services and accomplishments of their unit, and a reception for faculty and staff. Results: The Quillen College of Medicine Library had a turnout of 300+ to the barbeque. The library exhibits drew interest and comments from faculty, staff, and students. The promotion of National Medical Librarians Month allowed the library workers from all departments to a chance to interact with the patrons and it gave patrons a chance to put a face to the library workers they normally just email. Conclusions: The Quillen College of Medicine Library will try to incorporate into National Medical Librarians Month this year some more instruction aspects, giveaways, and more exhibits

Abstract:
This study began with the desire to design a public town library of the future and became a search for an inkling of what is essential to Architecture. It is murky and full of contradictions. It asks more than it proposes, and the traces of its windings are better ordered through collage than logical synthesis. This study is neither a thesis nor a synthesis. When drawing out the measure of this study it may be beneficial to state what it attempts to place at the perimeter. Architecture is not a product of society, civilization, or economy. Architecture is not democratic, and it cannot be brought forward in the public realm. Architecture is not a private affair. Architecture is not space, and it is not building. This study does attempt to hold that Architecture is founded in speech and gesture which originate in culture. As 'constructions' (construings), Architecture and the book share with the body the potential for utterance. The library is the coincidence of Architecture, the book, and the body.

Chelliah, Rajeswari. "Community building, multiculturalism and the suburban public library." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2014. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/1524.

Full text
Abstract:
This research investigates the role of public libraries in building communities and cross-cultural citizenship through provision of equitable information resources and services to English as Additional Language (EAL) speakers, particularly in metropolitan Perth, Western Australia. The rapidly changing demographic profile of Western Australia is producing an ever increasing diversity of people who need to access information in order to thrive in their new community. However, access to these information services pose challenges to users who lack competency in language, computer and general literacy, while the increasing diversity in the local population creates widely divergent competencies in information seeking skills among library clients. Diversity, which has become evident in many contemporary communities, unveils a wide range of information seeking skills, which varies from individuals who are illiterate (often from an agrarian background) and others who are highly educated with substantial English language and computer skills. In this research, the concept of equity in the provision of library services for EAL speakers was investigated by reviewing the library environment in Perth, Western Australia from the perspective of library staff and EAL clients. In-depth interviews were conducted with participants from across various EAL backgrounds as to their knowledge, understanding and current usage of library services. The interview sessions identified the extent of user acceptance of these services and the factors which indicated levels of perceived equity of these library services. The findings from the responses of the public library staff and EAL speakers revealed a complex and diverse local library environment. The public library system, in Western Australia traditionally modelled to serve English language clientele, is yet to fully recognise the presence of the multicultural clientele in its library service provision. Thus, the shift in public library perspectives towards service provision for diverse ethnic groups is evident in isolation but not in adherence to a transparent, consistent government policy which filters down to the local libraries as a guide for normal practices. The EAL speakers’ responses revealed a dire need for English language and computer skills education for some ethnic groups, in order to facilitate their public library access. The findings revealed that some of the EAL groups are unaware of the public library system, its intrinsic value or its culture including that the services are free and offered in a democratic and safe space. Some of the EAL groups also distrust government entities and figures of authority per se as officials symbolise maltreatment of their families and ethnic groups in their countries of origin. Reliance on natives from their own communities, revealed within the interview data, has led to an emergence of bonding social capital tendencies and limited integration with the host culture. The public library is strategically located to draw diverse individuals from its local suburb and contribute towards community building strategies and integration in Western Australia. Having located gaps between library service provision and library service needs, this research developed a model for possible future strategic directions for public libraries in Western Australia.

Abstract:
From the very beginning, library education has been a mixture of theory and practice. Dewey required apprenticeships to be part of the first library school at the University of Chicago as a method to indoctrinate new professional. Today, acculturation is incorporated into the professional education through a large variety of experiential learning techniques, including internships, practicum, field work, and service learning projects, all of which are designed to develop some level of professional skills within an information organization. But, what is done for understanding library culture? It is said that one cannot truly recognize the extent of one's own cultural assumptions, until they have experienced another. This study followed a group of LIS graduate students that took that next step – going to Russia. By employing a critical hermeneutic methodology, this study sought to understand what value students gain by from working on an assessment project in an international school library. Using a horizon analysis, the researcher established the worldview of participants prior to their departure, analyzed their experience through post-experience interviews, and constructed an understanding of value. Among other concepts, the researcher looked specifically to see whether "library cultural competency", understanding library culture in global context, was developed through working on a service learning project within an international school library. This dissertation provides feedback for the program leaders and ideas for future research.

Abstract:
In an effort to address declining university retention rates and to reach students who may not make it to the library for research help, the Sherrod Library at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) is in the process developing a peer-mentoring program. This program is one way the library can help the institution in its efforts raise student retention rates and improve student success. Peer learning programs have proven successful in tutoring centers and elsewhere in the university for decades, and research has shown that trained undergraduates are ideal candidates for delivering general reference and information literacy instruction to their peers (Bodemer, 2014). It is the library’s hope that seeding the campus with library ambassadors will help raise the profile of the library and information literacy on campus and at our satellite campuses as well. ETSU’s Library Ambassador Program entails hiring undergraduates each fall and offering them two semesters of information literacy training with a specific focus on learning the databases within their respective fields. Once training is complete, ambassadors are deployed in the academic buildings of their majors to help students with research and to connect students requiring in-depth help to librarians. As word of the program continues to spread, requests for ambassadors at satellite campuses and at additional main-campus computer labs has grown, and in the Fall of 2018, the library plans to hire 20 additional ambassadors to meet these needs. It is the library’s goal for the Library Ambassador Program to continue to grow each fall until ambassadors are stationed in each computer lab, residence hall, and academic building on and off campus.

Chitturi, Kiran. "Building CTRnet Digital Library Services using Archive-It and LucidWorks Big Data Software." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/46865.

Full text
Abstract:
When a crisis occurs, information flows rapidly in the Web through social media, blogs, and news articles. The shared information captures the reactions, impacts, and responses from the government as well as the public. Later, researchers, scholars, students, and others seek information about earlier events, sometimes for cross-event analysis or comparison. There are very few integrated systems which try to collect and permanently archive the information about an event and provide access to the crisis information at the same time. In this thesis, we describe the CTRnet Digital Library and Archive which aims to permanently archive crisis event information by using Archive-It services and then provide access to the archived information by using LucidWorks Big Data software. Through the Big Data (LWBD) software, we take advantage of text extraction, clustering, similarity, annotation, and indexing services and build digital libraries with the generated metadata that will be helpful for the system stakeholders to locate information about an event. Through this study, we collected data for 46 crises events using Archive-It. We built a CTRnet DL prototype and its services for the ``Boston Marathon Bombing" collection by using the components of LucidWorks Big Data. Running LucidWorks Big Data on a 30 node Hadoop cluster accelerates the sub-workflows processing and also provides fault tolerant execution. LWBD sub-workflows, ``ingest" and ``extract", processed the textual data present in the WARC files. Other sub-workflows ``kmeans", ``simdoc", and ``annotate" helped in grouping the search-results, deleting the duplicates and providing metadata for additional facets in the CTRnet DL prototype, respectively.

Abstract:
Are we doing enough to market newly acquired book titles? Libraries purchase and subscribe to many new book titles each year, both print and electronic. However, we rely on the expectation that users will periodically search our systems to discover newly acquired titles. Static lists and displays have been traditional marketing methods for libraries, but require tedious time and effort to maintain. Without a practical solution for an academic library, East Tennessee State University developed an automated process to generate book widgets utilizing data from Alma Analytics. These widgets are now deployed in our subject guides, website, and on our digital displays. This article outlines the development and implementation of these widgets. We also discuss the challenges we encountered, such as finding image covers and custom subject tagging.

Sheng, Bo. "Building efficient wireless infrastructures for pervasive computing environments." W&M ScholarWorks, 2010. https://scholarworks.wm.edu/etd/1539623557.

Full text
Abstract:
Pervasive computing is an emerging concept that thoroughly brings computing devices and the consequent technology into people's daily life and activities. Most of these computing devices are very small, sometimes even "invisible", and often embedded into the objects surrounding people. In addition, these devices usually are not isolated, but networked with each other through wireless channels so that people can easily control and access them. In the architecture of pervasive computing systems, these small and networked computing devices form a wireless infrastructure layer to support various functionalities in the upper application layer.;In practical applications, the wireless infrastructure often plays a role of data provider in a query/reply model, i.e., applications issue a query requesting certain data and the underlying wireless infrastructure is responsible for replying to the query. This dissertation has focused on the most critical issue of efficiency in designing such a wireless infrastructure. In particular, our problem resides in two domains depending on different definitions of efficiency. The first definition is time efficiency, i.e., how quickly a query can be replied. Many applications, especially real-time applications, require prompt response to a query as the consequent operations may be affected by the prior delay. The second definition is energy efficiency which is extremely important for the pervasive computing devices powered by batteries. Above all, our design goal is to reply to a query from applications quickly and with low energy cost.;This dissertation has investigated two representative wireless infrastructures, sensor networks and RFID systems, both of which can serve applications with useful information about the environments. We have comprehensively explored various important and representative problems from both algorithmic and experimental perspectives including efficient network architecture design and efficient protocols for basic queries and complicated data mining queries. The major design challenges of achieving efficiency are the massive amount of data involved in a query and the extremely limited resources and capability each small device possesses. We have proposed novel and efficient solutions with intensive evaluation. Compared to the prior work, this dissertation has identified a few important new problems and the proposed solutions significantly improve the performance in terms of time efficiency and energy efficiency. Our work also provides referrable insights and appropriate methodology to other similar problems in the research community.

Abstract:
Technological advancements in the second half of the century have significantly affected academic library institution. Libraries are undergoing a transition period and constantly updating their system to adapt to those advancements. However, library building is slow to adapt to the changes. This study examines those changes in academic libraries and buildings based on two main variables. namely human beings. and the medium. through which the information is transmitted The invention of first. electronic, and then digital systems significantly changed these two variables. The resulting library building is shaped by the new human Behavior and the form of information-mediums in a technology-oriented environment. The result of this study is 'five governing principles,' which explain the position of those two variables in a complex web of relations created by technological advancements. The same principles also explain the role of different variables in the future of the library building typology.

Abstract:
The use of computers within the electronic environment has led to rapid and dynamic changes in the way governments and businesses operate. One of the significant outcomes of computerization is that managing electronic records now relies on IT and it needs to be integrated into the business processes of an organization. Therefore electronic records management (ERM) not only requires the involvement of key players in recordkeeping, such as records managers and archivists, but also IT personnel and administrators under a common shared responsibility to establish a credible electronic records management programme. According to McLeod, Hare and Johare (2004) managing records in the electronic environment is not only a major challenge but also increasingly a strategic issue for organizations in both the public and private sectors. They suggested that “a key factor in meeting both the challenge and addressing the strategic management is the provision of education and/or training for employees and potential employees (i.e students). In particular, providing this at the appropriate level of detail and in the appropriate areas of the subject, commensurate with roles and responsibilities so that these people can discharge, both effectively and efficiently, their responsibilities for managing records in the electronic environment”. Within this context, this paper examines the education and training opportunities on ERM worldwide and in Asia.

Natural light can add clarity to the organization of buildings by distinguishing areas of occupation with varying quantities and qualities of illumination. Libraries are good to study in this regard because of their varying requirements for light: reading areas must be brightly lit, while bookstacks should have little light for preservation. In responding to these needs, many libraries establish a pattern of light that relates to the buildings' use. Natural light is basic to the organization of four libraries studied: the Laurentian, Florence; Sainte Genevieve, Paris; the Seinajoke, Finland; and the Phillips Academy, Exeter. The buildings are analyzed through plans, sections, and perspective sketches. The understanding of light gained from these references is applied to my design of the Newton Public Library. In addition, I go one step further and try to use natural light to establish a continuity between different functional areas of the library.

Abstract:
Strategic planning is a critical issue for higher education academic libraries, especially in developing countries like Ghana, due to limited financial resources and the rapid change in the information environment during the last several decades. Theory-testing case study methodology was used in this thesis to examine strategy formulation and implementation in building the digital collections of the University of Cape Coast Library (UCCL) in Ghana. The main question the study attempted to answer was how did the DL strategic formulation and implementation processes used by the UCC in building its digital collections compare with the Mintzberg’s strategic formulation and implementation framework? The instruments used for data collection were the key informant interview technique and document reviews. The results showed that, during the formulation phase, two aspects (resources and aspirations of senior management) were emergent. During the implementation phase, five aspects (achieving results, processes and behaviour, standards, motivation, and personal) were emergent. All other elements of building the UCC digital collections were planned during both the formulation and implementation phases. Although the basic technical architecture for the digital library is in place, inconsistency between organizational objectives and the values of the management group was identified as a problem in strategy formulation. Digital library staff reported that cost of using Information Communications Technology (ICT) facilities, frequency of power outage, obsolete digitization equipment, interconnectivity problems, and high cost of internet connectivity inhibited their work and regular student access to digital collections. Although the emphasis on students and learning is laudable and apt, there seems to be lack of focus on research support beyond digital collection building, despite the fact that research excellence is one of the UCC’s key priorities. Opportunities exist for improving feedback mechanisms between the users, digital library staff and the university management; and inclusion of social media tools in the digital library project.

Abstract:
This study is an attempt to uncover the underlying operation and maintenance issues in sustaining the operation of an automated green building with focus on its water systems. The Grove Library is a public building in Peppermint Grove, Western Australia, with smart design aimed to address environmentally sustainable concepts in their entirety. A sophisticated Building Management System (BMS) integrates the operation of the entire Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) systems in operation at The Grove. However a number of continual breakdowns in the operation of the ESD water systems, namely wastewater, rainwater and irrigation systems, lead to high levels of disappointment for the people managing and operating these systems. This is the first time that data have been extracted from the BMS. Prior to this study, it was possible to quantify the performance of any of the ESD water systems. This has resulted in the inability of external contractors to monitor the ESD systems’ operation. This study discussed the factors contributing to this situation using data analysis as the main method for troubleshooting and investigating the causes to these breakdowns. Upon achieving a good understanding of the situation, the recommendations were able to be formulated. It was found that the current situation with the ESD water systems at The Grove is a consequence of some interrelated factors forming a ‘vicious circle’. The ESD systems, their maintenance, the BMS and the management were the key factors identified as responsible for the issues in The Grove. The recommendations produced in this study were mainly on the technical side of the problem, that is, the BMS, ESD water systems and their maintenance. In order to overcome the issues at The Grove this relationship among these factors should be recognised and established.

Abstract:
Context: As most modern browsers fully support the new set of APIs called Web Components, it is crucial to investigate how developers could use them to enhance the performance and developer experience of web development. When considering this, it is fitting to investigate both the technical and practical differences between modern libraries powered by the APIs, versus traditional libraries which do not. Objectives: In this study, traditional libraries using Virtual DOM got investigated to find out which differences exist when compared to modern ones using Web Components. To find out how this next generation of front-end libraries could utilize these new APIs to improve the build process of websites. If the APIs offer alternative ways for developers to achieve better performance and developer experience. Realization:  In order to fulfill the objectives, an empirical study and a literature review were conducted. In the literature review, we investigated how a set of well-known front-end libraries technically compares to new and aspiring Web Components based libraries. In the empirical study, a new Web Components library was built from the ground up with inspiration from Vuejs. With the help of modern code styles to achieve a fresh developer experience. Results: The results of the study show that Web Components based libraries tend to be quite powerful and offer excellent all-around performance. The created library, Kirei, reflected this as it became a powerful all-around library that offers a great developer experience. It also performed equally well or even better than Vue on most benchmarks. However, Vue was better at creating new elements while Kirei excelled at updating elements. In a way, the libraries excitingly contrasted with each other. Conclusions: While Vue and React are fundamentally different from Lit-Element, Heresy, and Kirei, they are alike in some sense. Most of the differences come from how the libraries apply updates to the DOM. While Web Components based libraries patch only the dynamic parts, Virtual DOM has to diff both the dynamic and static parts. Moreover, Kirei proved to be a robust framework that could compete with Vue and React. In some benchmarks, it proved to have an upper edge in performance.

The project includes the reuse of an existing building, formerly a theatre but currently in a state of ruin after the war destructions, as well as the creation of a new wing and public spaces. Its aim is to develop an architectural language that can be an interpretation of the city’s features, sitting halfway between contemporaneity and tradition. The main sources of inspiration are baroque architecture, porticoed public spaces, formal front facades in contrast with more messy and autonomous internal courtyards. The resulting building mixes these influences in a complex combining archive spaces for the nearby Museum of Cinema, offices connected to it, a public library and consultation spaces, multifunctional and lecture rooms, and an independent café with indoor and outdoor seating.

Abstract:
Buildings can be built that use no energy from external power grids. They can be essentially carbon neutral in their environmental load, and they can be built and operated at fair market values. Although this may sound like a dream of the future, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is working toward making that dream a reality today. The Council announced on March 26, 2006 (Environment News Service) that it is forming an alliance of global companies to ensure that by 2050 all new buildings meet these standards.1The profession of architecture, at the beginning of the 21st century, finds itself in a position where architectural philosophies and methodologies must respond to the world changing events that are impacting our planet. This creative project outlines some of the methodologies used to create a carbon-neutral public library. Within a public library, architects respond to two of the primary concerns of this young century; the global need for a clean, livable planet and the proliferation of digital media and methods that are driving globalization as we are beginning to know it.The proposed new Union Township Branch of the Anderson Public Library seemed a logical subject for this Creative Project because much of the past work of our firm and much of my personal experience involved the design of public libraries. The carbon neutral concepts evolved gradually, after much study, and the goal of this creative project is that this particular library and many other sustainable libraries in the future will benefit from the concepts and methodologies outlined here, as those new buildings approach carbon neutrality.

Jin, Lu. "Building Matlab Standalone Package from Java for Differential Dependence Network Analysis Bioinformatics Toolkit." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/33488.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis reports a software development effort to transplant Matlab algorithm into a Matlab license-free, platform dependent Java based software. The result is almost equivalent to a direct translation of Matlab source codes into Java or any other programming languages. Since compiled library is platform dependent, an MCR (Matlab Compiler Runtime environment) is required and has been developed to deploy the transplanted algorithm to end user. As the result, the implemented MCR is free to distribution and the streamline transplantation process is much simpler and more reliable than manually translation work. In addition, the implementation methodology reported here can be reused for other similar software engineering tasks. There are mainly 4 construction steps in our software package development. First, all Matlab *.m files or *.mex files associated with the algorithms of interest (to be transplanted) are gathered, and the corresponding shared library is created by the Matlab Compiler. Second, a Java driver is created that will serve as the final user interface. This Java based user interface will take care of all the input and output of the original Matlab algorithm, and prepare all native methods. Third, assisted by JNI, a C driver is implemented to manage the variable transfer between Matlab and Java. Lastly, Matlab mbuild function is used to compile the C driver and aforementioned shared library into a dependent library, ready to be called from the standalone Java interface. We use a caBIGTM (Cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid) data analytic toolkit, namely, the DDN (differential dependence network) algorithm as the testbed in the software development. The developed DDN standalone package can be used on any Matlab-supported platform with Java GUI (Graphic User Interface) or command line parameter. As a caBIGTM toolkit, the DDN package can be integrated into other information systems such as Taverna or G-DOC. The major benefits provided by the proposed methodology can be summarized as follows. First, the proposed software development framework offers a simple and effective way for algorithm developer to provide novel bioinformatics tools to the biomedical end-users, where the frequent obstacle is the lack of language-specific software runtime environment and incompatibility between the compiled software and available computer platforms at userâ s sites. Second, the proposed software development framework offers software developer a significant time/effort-saving method for translating code between different programming languages, where the majority of software developerâ s time/effort is spent on understanding the specific analytic algorithm and its language-specific codes rather than developing efficient and platform/user-friendly software. Third, the proposed methodology allows software engineers to focus their effort on the quality of software rather than the details of original source codes, where the only required information is the inputs and outputs of the algorithm. Specifically, all used variables and functions are mapped between Matlab, C and Java, handled solely by our designated C driver.

Abstract:
This master's thesis analyzes and redesigns the current performance design of the Main Library in Najran University campus, Najran, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) to achieve a completely energy independent and off-grid building. The research demonstrates the energy development in KSA, investigates and analyzes the project, and studies the energy systems. Climate data for Najran city was generated and analyzed in Climate Consultant 6.0. The research examines case studies from hot-arid climates that are responsive climatically. In addition, the energy generation and storage systems are calculated and specified to the building and its site; Quick Energy Simulation Tool (eQUEST) was used to analyze and simulate the energy use in the existing building. Furthermore, Revit software was utilized to develop the project design and simulate daylight intensity for indoor and outdoor spaces. Additionally, Cool Vent simulated the natural ventilation for the building for the low-energy performance case and the high-energy performance case, and direct passive evaporative cool towers were simulated in COOLT software. Appropriate building envelopes, passive cooling strategies, and native landscapes are applied to the off-grid case. Solar power generation outcomes, wind turbines output, batteries size are optimized in HOMER energy simulation software; thus, this off-grid building generates electricity more than its use, then, stores the extra energy in batteries banks. Through this research energy independency was accomplished with a reduction in total energy consumption by 64%, and human thermal comfort levels were attained in the proposed design.

Abstract:
Institutional Repository services require continuous, multi-channel promotion and support to attract and retain conferences, journals, and other campus collections. However, given the relative complexity of the services offered, balancing promotional messaging with a clear representation of repository offerings, policies, and procedures can be a challenge. Providing a flexible but robust marketing and support framework is especially important for institutions that rely on non-repository public services personnel to provide front-line promotion of repository services to faculty and administrators. During this session, we will look at Georgia Southern University's recently-developed Institutional Repository Services LibGuide as a model for providing such a framework (http://georgiasouthern.libguides.com/irservices/overview). This portal simultaneously provides 1) a front-line promotional tool, 2) a client-management tool for setup and support consultations, and 3) a storehouse for repository-related documents, forms, MOUs, and licenses. This portal further integrates with the library's other scholarly communications-related guides, providing seamless representation of these services to patrons. Participants will use this guide as a jumping-off point to discuss strategies and best practices for mediating institutional repository services, and for integrating repository promotion and support into libraries' broader scholarly communications initiatives.

Abstract:
The diploma project handles the design of the synagogue and other buildings of the Jewish community in Frýdek - Místek. The project is formed as an architectural study. The complex of the Jewish community includes, in addition to the synagogue itself, a kosher restaurant, which is characterized by a specific cooking convention, as well as a Jewish gallery, a library and the administration of the Jewish community. The whole complex is complemented by an underground car park. The area is located close to the border of the historic city center. The land is not monotonous, in some parts it is relatively flat, in others it is sloping. It is bounded on the north by a blind road and on the south by road II. class on Revoluční street. At present, the territory of the former synagogue is unused and neglected. The idea of the design is based on simple principles of basic geometric shapes - circle and square. The circle is a symbol of heaven and eternity and the square is a symbol of earthliness and transience. The symbolism of numbers is also applied in the proposal, especially "1" - a sign of unity, indivisibility, as well as God; "2" - number of opposites - heaven and earth; "3" completeness and stability. From the compositional point of view, it is a line of 3 blocks of the same base and height, while one of them is fitted with a cylinder, which is the tallest of all objects. This results from the Jewish tradition. All objects are designed on a platform that symbolizes the ascent to the Temple Mount. The above mentioned functions are divided into separate objects. A uniform architectural language is chosen for all buildings. The principles of construction and layout of individual buildings differ according to their operation.

Abstract:
The purpose of the thesis is to investigate planning processes for academic library buildings and the outcomes of such processes. This is accomplished through a case study utilising discourse analysis. The main question is: How is a vision of an academic library implemented in and through a building? The case study is retrospective and focused on the building of a newlibrary at Kalmar University, Sweden, at the end of the 1990s. During this period, technological and educational developments and general societal change transformed the context of library planning and made way for renegotiations of the librarian profession.A critical realist approach characterises the study of visions, processes and the analysis of the various functions of the building. Results reveal the proactive nature of the activities of thelibrary director in Kalmar. Early in the process he formulated a vision in which he presents the library as an information resource, a meeting place between different user groups and a workplace intended to promote learning and knowledge. From a professional point of view, the vision implied a dehierarchisation of relations both within the library staff and between library staff and visitors. The vision was based on an interpretation of Swedish national educational policy, and architecturally manifested by an ambition to reduce the physical and psychologicalboundaries between library staff and visitors. The early formulation of the visiontogether with the clients’ use of architectural expertise facilitated the choice of architects. However during the process a need arose to anchor the decision in the library field. Efforts were made to address library expertise and to collect user comments from a broader academic field. Discourses concerning the university library as a workplace and a meeting place wereespecially evident in the strategies of the leading agents. The discourses uncovered in the study correspond to more general discourses which became prominent in society and higher education during the period in question. The library itself has met growing appreciation by users both from within and outside the university. The proactive leadership demonstrated by the library director in Kalmar was based on hegemony rather than coercion. This corresponds to contemporary tendencies. Hegemonic consent may persist even after changes in leadership. In Kalmar however, architectural solutions with insufficient support from the library staff have been reconstructed after changes in leadership.Future research on architectural planning processes may pay further attention to different discursive resources, social fields and the positions within them.

Abstract:
The focus of this two year master’s thesis in Library- and Information science is the study of two Swedish Public Library buildings with the examples Lomma and Halmstad. The main goal and purpose of the thesis is to try to uncover which views and values of the public library are expressed in the examined libraries; and to what extent these views manifests are shown in its architecture. The theoretical framework is based on Raymond Williams’s cultural concepts of effective, dominant culture and the two extremities of this culture, called residual and emergent cultures. A second aspect is Yi-Fu Tuans concepts of Space and Place. The study also uses a historical background of Swedish Public Library Buildings. By close reading and textual analyses, the empirical study focuses on the municipalities’ documents surrounding the building of the library buildings in Lomma and Halmstad. The architectural perspective is studied through the architects own documents and architectural journals discussing the built Library Buildings. Results show that the technological advances of the time these libraries were built has put them in a position of change, which also is visible in the architecture. The libraries in Lomma and Halmstad function as civic icons of the community and the architecture is very dependent of the places where they are situated. The expressions of the two libraries differ in details but the overall result show that the values exhibited behind the building of the examined libraries is a part of a historical residual culture, functioning as effective and dominant. The conclusion of the thesis is that the expression of the architecture is however a part of an emergent culture. The buildings aim to comprise the values and display the diverse causes in its architecture. The buildings seek to manifest the ideal activity and working of the modern Public Library.
