Abstract:
Peptide libraries are important in peptide based drug discovery and investigations of biological targets. Different chemical and biological methods have been developed to screen and decode peptide libraries. mRNA display technology is a biological method that utilizes in vitro translation systems to build peptide libraries, and the screened peptides are decoded by their covalently attached oligonucleotide templates. Like other biological methods, mRNA display technology can generate peptide libraries with high fidelity and speed but the chemical repertoire is limited mostly to natural amino acids. Our research goal is to expand the chemical repertoire of mRNA display technology by using it in combination with an in vitro reconstituted translation system, and build peptides containing stabilizing chemical features such as N-methyl amino acids that would make peptides more proteolytic resistant and drug-like. Using a streptavidin-dependent gel shift assay, the unnatural amino acids, N-methyl-L-alanine, N-methyl-L-glutamate, N-methyl-L-ornithine, L-abrine, t-butyl-L-glycine, biocytin, and sarcosine were shown to be able to incorporate successively into hexa-peptides in the mRNA display format. The peptides containing unnatural amino acids were shown to be more resistant to proteinase K proteolysis than peptides containing only the natural amino acid L-alanine. Several mRNA libraries were made in accordance with the mRNA display format. Repeated E. coli in vitro reconstituted translations of these mRNA libraries with varying translation conditions fail to yield peptides of significant lengths. However, a library of tetra-peptides was synthesized in the absence of mRNA display format. Thus, the puromycin linker required by mRNA display technology seemed to interfere with proper translations in the E. coli in vitro reconstituted translation system. Experiments showed that E. coli in vitro reconstituted translation system is slow at making full-length peptides in the context of mRNA display technology and a majority of products are prematurely terminated translation products, which could be due to slow peptidyl formation in the E. coli in vitro reconstituted translation system, or the result of undesirable interaction between the E. coli ribosome and puromycin linker that interfere with normal translation. This slow translation kinetic issue needs to be addressed with further experiments in order to successfully pursue the development of this technology.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the strength of Extensible Markup Language (XML) technology and explores the impact of the implementation of XML in three digital library initiatives which are used as case studies by examining in depth their digital library development. In part I, metadata issues are covered and the different kinds of metadata and metadata systems available for use in digital libraries are evaluated. Different models of storing the data and their relationship with XML are evaluated. The role of SGML in the early development of digital libraries is covered. To illustrate data manipulation, the author experiments with a digital library of images and their evaluations which use an XML-aware relational database. This part also concludes content management of both text and non-text which have used XML or may in the future move towards XML. In part II, three case studies are examined and the results of interviews done by the author when visiting them assist in a detailed evaluation of the three examples. The three digital libraries are: the Library of Congress National Digital Library Program (NDLP), the University of Michigan Digital Library Services (DLS) and the Perseus Digital Library (PDL). Each digital library is evaluated in depth taking into account the digitization processes used, the metadata systems they employ and how the metadata are created, and the delivery systems. The HTTP usage statistics of the three case studies are also analyzed. The on-going work required for the maintenance of the digital libraries, managerial aspects relating to staff management, information on users and their usage and organizational aspects are covered and evaluated. The author evaluates in what ways in each of those aspects the use of XML could benefit the digital library's development. The thesis finishes with a number of recommendations that could be taken up by digital libraries to their benefit.

Abstract:
This research assessed website management and development practices across the United Kingdom university library sector. As a starting point, the design and features of this group of websites was recorded against criteria drawn from the extant literature. This activity established core content and features of UK library websites as: a search box or link for searching the library catalogue, electronic resources or website; a navigation column on the left and breadcrumb trail to aid information location and website orientation; homepage design was repeated on library website sub-pages; university brand elements appeared in the banner; and a contact us link was provided for communication with library personnel. Library websites conformed to 14 of the 20 homepage usability guidelines examined indicating that web managers were taking steps to ensure that users were well served by their websites. Areas for improvement included better navigation support (sitemap/index), greater adoption of new technologies and more interactive features. Website management and development practices were established through national survey and in-depth case studies. These illustrated the adoption of a team approach to website management and development; formal website policy and strategy were not routinely created; library web personnel and their ability to build effective links with colleagues at the institution made a valuable contribution to the success of a library website; corporate services and institutional practices played an important part in library website development; library staff were actively engaged in consultations with their website audience; and a user focused approach to website development prevailed. User studies and metric data were considered in the website evaluation and development process. However, there were some issues with both data streams and interpreting metric data to inform website development. Evaluation and development activities were not always possible due to staff/time shortages, technical constraints, corporate website templates, and, to a lesser extent, lack of finance.

Abstract:
The Malki Museum Tribal Special Library and Archives project is an on-site repository created in order to provide access to information regarding tribal culture and heritage to local tribal members and researchers. The project filled the need for a space dedicated to material related to the history of local Southern California Native American tribes and information regarding the topics of Archaeology, Anthropology and History. The collection includes: books, manuscripts, documents, audio/visual media, and photographs. Bringing together multimedia sources, the Special Tribal Library allows for the preservation and accessibility of these items through cataloging and digitizing the collection. This method allows for the collection to be available to the public while being able to preserve its integrity through limited handling. In order to facilitate the establishment of the Special Library and Archive, the Malki Museum Special Tribal Library and Archives project teamed up with the Malki Museum’s Director, as well as the Malki Museum’s Tribal Board of Directors. Several weeks of organization, assessment, and collaboration helped prepare the Special Library first for user-friendliness. The final product is the Malki Museum Tribal Special Library which provides tribal members and scholars alike a locality where research can be undertaken and acquired. The Malki Museum Tribal Special Library project helps bring important data within reach to its local community.

Abstract:

The background of the project is partly found in a long tradition within library and information science (LIS) of meta-analyses on the field, partly in a science studies discussion on research fields and their contextual relation to wider academia, fields of professional

practices and professionalization processes. The general purpose of the project is to analyze the social and intellectual development and organization of LIS; and to investigate the impact of the close relation to the practice field, as well as the relation to the academic world in general. Based on the general purpose of the project and results and interpretations of the four articles attached to the thesis, three questions were stated for discussion in the thesis proper, concerning: the effects of a dual origin and LIS as a discipline, a field of research and a field of practice, the purpose of meta-studies and implications in terms of identity and perception of LIS; and competition and cooperation with other fields of research. Because of the heterogeneous nature of LIS, a variety of methods and materials was used in the different articles; and methodological issues on limits and bias in bibliographic databases – and the implications on the perception of research areas with varying publication and citation behaviour – were discussed. The analyses were performed against a theoretical framework, providing key organizational characteristics of scientific fields, relating to social, intellectual and contextual aspects, in combination with theories on scientific and disciplinary development, professionalization and interdisciplinarity; but also, for analytical contrast: alternate theories on the development of the sciences since 1945. LIS shows two distinct paths of development: research areas developing out of other fields of research; and a disciplinary development originating out of the field of practice and institutions for educating practitioners. Analyzing meta-studies of LIS, the picture of a field with a vague identity and a diverse self-understanding, even in terms of core characteristics, emerges. The relation to the wider academic community is characterized by diffuse boundaries towards, and competition from, other fields of research. In general, LIS is a fragmented field with a multitude of wildly varying research areas; and with large variations in terms of organizational setting; which together with a vague identity and diffuse boundaries, as well as the close connections to the field of practice, might contribute towards explaining problems LIS have been experiencing, establishing itself in academia. However, there are also signs towards an integration of a number of LIS research areas, as well as an increase in interdisciplinary cooperation, contradicting theories suggesting a further fragmentation; and supporting ideas on the sciences developing towards e.g. interdisciplinarity and applicability of results.

Software designs are mostly modeled as Unified Modeling Language (UML) diagrams when object oriented software development is concerned. Some popular topics in the industry such as Model Driven Development, generating test cases automatically in the early phases of software development, automated generation of code from design model etc. use the benefits of UML designs. All of these topics have something in common which is the need for accuracy against the meta-model not to face problems in the latter phases of the development process. Support on the full checking of the design models is necessary for the detection of design inconsistencies. This thesis presents an approach for automated verification of UML design models and explains the implementation of the library called UMLChecker.

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) is a tool through which the present government in South Africa wants to implement transformation in regard with raising the standard of living of the people in all spheres of life. Libraries are often seen as important agencies for information dissemination and other services. Public libraries have a vital role to play in the achievement of the MDGs. Stakeholders all over the spectrum need to collaborate with libraries to achieve these goals by 2015. The study investigated the role of the public library in realising some of the MDGs by means of a case study of Groenheuwel Public Library. The aim of this case study was to determine how this public library contributes to the development of Groenheuwel. Empirical research techniques were used to determine whether public libraries contribute to the well-being of the community of Groenheuwel and to the achievement of certain targets for the Millennium Development Goals. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) provide a framework for libraries and information services to develop and align their strategies and access their contribution towards their countries (Kaniki, 2008:16). The methodology applied was a quantitative questionnaire which included open-ended questions, which explored the role of the public library in the respondents' lives. The study made use of random sampling; the population of the study was adult library users. Every third library user was asked to complete a questionnaire over a period of two weeks. The data collected, informed the researcher what the purpose of the adult users' visit to the library was and whether the library addresses MDGs directly or indirectly. The findings should provide empirical evidence of the impact of public libraries, with reference to Groenheuwel public library, in addressing some of the Millennium Development Goals. The researcher hopes that this study will convince local government and decision makers to expand the library to a bigger library, to render an effective and efficient library service with added staff members and that the community find the library valuable and vital for their information needs.

This research explored how the Smart Cape Access Project in Delft Public Library is used by the Delft community and how it related to the Millennium Development Goals asset out by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). This study also investigated the Smart Cape Access Project, as an initiative by the City of Cape Town to ensure access to Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) for all citizens of Cape Town, and how it is utilised as a tool for economic and personal development. The research took place at Delft Public Library in Delft. Delft is a residential area with no industries, whatsoever. The area has a high unemployment rate, high crime rate and more than 60% of those employed earn less than R1600. 00 per month. These factors and the fact that the City of Cape Town recognizes the importance of ICTs for economic and social growth made Delft ideal for this research. The study also investigated whether the information given via the Smart Cape Access project is relevant for sustainable development. Sustainable development is on the agenda of many countries and the concept can be taken as far back as the seventies with the first United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm, Sweden and culminating in the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002 in Johannesburg, South Africa. In South Africa several initiatives were implemented to bring ICTs to those who do not have access to ICTs, as the importance of ICTs to improve and uplift the quality of life are recognised by different role-players e.g. government, private sectors and nongovernmental organisations (NGOs). The researcher regarded this as sufficient reason to embark on this study, though the scope of the study only concentrated on the Smart Cape Access Project in one public library.

This thesis deals with the procedures for and the issues in the analysis, design, and implementation of Library Loan Management System (LLMS). LLMS is a low-volume real-time transaction processing system intended for small or medium size libraries. It is designed to provide such library functions as library cataloging, patron registration, circulation, and reference services based on a relational database management system. We implemented prototype LLMS to run on IBM PC/AT or XT compatible microcomputer using dBASE IV. The developed prototype system has been documented in this thesis. We also discuss some issues in implementing LLMS in a networked environment.

Abstract:
Cell-based design is a widely adopted design approach in current Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC) and System-on-Chip (SOC) designs. A standard cell library is a collection of basic building blocks that can be used in cell-based design. The use of a standard cell library offers shorter design time, induces fewer errors in the design process, and is easier to maintain. Development of a cell library is laborious, prone to errors and even a small error on a library cell can possibly be disastrous due to repeated use of the cell in a design. In this thesis, we investigated ways to automate the process for development of a cell library, specifically TSMC 0.18-micron CMOS standard cell library. We examined various steps in the design flow to identify required repetitive tasks for individual cells. Those steps include physical verification, netlist extraction, cell characterization, and generation of Synopsys Liberty Format file. We developed necessary scripts in Skill, Tcl, Perl and Shell to automate those steps. Additionally, we developed scripts to automate the quality assurance process of the cell library, where quality assurance consists of verifying the entire ASIC design flow adopted for the Virginia Tech VLSI Telecommunications (VTVT) lab. Our scripts have been successfully used to develop our TSMC 0.18-micron library and to verify the quality assurance. The first version of the cell library was released on November 1, 2007 to universities worldwide, and as of March 2008, 20 universities have received the library from us.

Abstract:
We live in an era characterised by the explosion of information. As societies are becaning more and more dependent on information, not only for the generation of knowledge but also for the generation of revenues, it is imperative that each society develops its own information infrastructure. Such development depends to a great extent on the availability of qualified library and information staff. These should be well trained and equipped with the proper knowledge, skills and attitudes to engage in library and information development programmes. Good training requires, among other facilities, an efficient library education system and a relevant curriculum. The intention of this study is to provide a framework for approaching curriculum development in Algerian library schools. Included is an overview of the process of curriculum development as seen through a review of the literature, and a look at different approaches to curriculum development and how curriculum design and planning has changed over the years. In surveying library education programmes in Algeria it was found that arrong other findings there is strong evidence of the lack of qualified teachers and poor teaching/learning facilities to attempt innovations in the curriculum. These issues are examined in the light of accepted standards in order to establish contrasting features, and measure the adequacy of library education in Algeria. The study reviews curriculum developnent activity in the Algerian general education system with emphasis on library education. It brings to attention the essential facts necessary for understanding the environmental factors which led to the current problems and tensions in the Algerian library and information scene. Finding a mentor who works well for you can be both challenging and frustrating. Mentor-mentee matching programs are a great idea and work beautifully for some librarians in specific contexts. What happens when you outgrow, mismatch or need specialized or temporal mentoring? How do you understand the scope of your need? How do you get to the “why” behind building this relationship? In this program, audience members will assess their resources and needs, develop a short list of possible mentors for those needs, identify their personal goals and what they hope to provide a mentor through this relationship. Further, audience members will consider how to build an effective relationship with both accountability and an assessment plan to help both the mentor and mentee understand if goals have been met. Finally, time will be given to ensure audience members consider how best to share the skills and understanding they acquire through this relationship.

Abstract:
This study examines the collection development policies and procedures of the independent Black schools that belong to the Council of Independent Black Institutions. The primary focus is on, 1) the types of sources used to select and acquire library materials pertaining to the Black experience, and 2) the extent to which the collections of the schools focus on materials documenting Black life and culture. Major findings include, that in the Black independent schools surveyed, 1) Black book stores are the major source of library materials concerning Black life and culture, and 2) in terms of abundance, materials concerning Black people are the most important part of the library collections. This report suggests the need for further research to explore dimensions of resource development in Black schools beyond the scope of the present investigation.

This dissertation examines the role of university libraries in academic support and development programmes in South Africa. It focuses on how libraries and librarians can assist under-prepared students whose educational backgrounds under apartheid have not equipped them for the transition from school to university. The socio-political, educational and library contexts are analysed in comparative perspective by looking at the experience of ethnic minorities in the United Kingdom. Issues of nation building and multi-culturalism in both Britain and South Africa are critically discussed, and the institutional aspects of professional librarianship are construed as the backdrop of user education in academic libraries. Academic development strategies in university libraries are reviewed under the rubric of affirmative action, racism awareness training, a multi-media environment, reading programmes and information retrieval and censorship. Recommendations are offered on the basis of an investigation of the literature on user education in libraries and its application to academic development for under-prepared students.

School impact media studies indicate that a well-staffed and funded school library media program with a certified school library media specialist (SLMS) positively correlates with increased student achievement. SLMS must have a shared understanding of their roles and responsibilities to positively impact student success. In an effort to determine prior knowledge and differentiated learning objectives, the method of certification is critical for planning professional development. This dissertation presents a multi-method investigation of differences between Alternatively Certified (AC) and Traditionally Certified (TC) SLMS as it relates to their perceptions of collaboration, leadership and technology described in Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning (1998). The overall findings were used to generate recommendations for SLMS professional development. Of 2350 total SLMS in Florida, 161 AC and 318 TC SLMS responded to an online job task analysis. The strength of association between method of certification and perceptions of job tasks under the three themes (collaboration, leadership, and technology) were compared using statistical analysis (i.e. variance, standard deviation, t-tests, chi-square tests, and ANOVA). Longitudinal comparisons were made between this study and baselines studies from 1996 and 2006. There were no significant differences between AC and TC overall perceptions of collaboration, leadership and technology as indicated by the job task analysis survey. Two tasks within collaboration and technology themes had large significant differences in AC and TC responses. TC SLMS were more likely to "Assist students and/or teachers with general references services (e.g., answer reference questions)" and to "Evaluate the adequacy and suitability of facilities, equipment, materials, and services with regard to their impact on learning outcomes." TC SLMS were significantly more familiar with IP2, made more attempts to implement IP2, and attended more in-services on IP2. Observations and interviews with two AC and two TC SLMS triangulated the survey data and explored questions related to professional development. Interview participants advocated for content developed by other SLMS and mentorship training. SLMS asserted that professional development should include school and county protocols, evaluation tools and methods, relevant and accessible technologies (i.e. school and district software, Student Information System, Library Databases Standards such as CORE Curriculum). The SLMS indicated a preference for the following professional development methods: SLMS designed and implemented professional development; formal and informal SLMS sharing; differentiation and options to opt-out based on prior experiences and expertise; relevant and accessible technology training; and mentorship. These findings inform ways to effectively recruit, train, certify, and differentiate instruction in SLMS programs and professional development courses. Furthermore, our qualitative findings indicate a need to examine the impact of reduced budgets on school library media programs. Future studies should investigate the impact of increased numbers of non-certified SLMS and cuts to library staff on student achievement and K-12 learning communities. While this study counted the total number of non-certified SLMS in addition to the AC and TC SLMS, results from the sample of non-certified SLMS collected during the job task analysis were not analyzed because it was too small for comparison or generalizability.

The history and development of the education and training of library Technicians in Australia is currently recorded in the literature in a piecemeal und uncoordinated manner. The aim of this research is to provide a current and coherent account of the history and development of courses, examine the role of major stakeholders and identify the major issues that have accompanied the evolution of education and training for paraprofessional library staff. A comprehensive chronicle of the education and training of library technicians will contribute to the research and literature of Library and information science in Australia. The research will examine: • why formal education and training courses for library technicians were introduced in Australia; • how education and training courses have developed and evolved in response to library industry workplace changes from 1970 to 2000; • what role the professional organisation, the Library Association of Australia, and its successor, the Australian Library and Information Association, has played in the education and training of library technicians; and • what impact government policy on vocational education and training has had, and continues to have, on the training of library technicians. An extensive examination and analysis of existing primary and secondary information sources, including books, journal articles, conference proceedings, government publications, online and Internet documents and TAFE course documentation was conducted in the course of this study. While the methodology was generally restricted to an examination of documentation available in published sources, it was supplemented with personal communication with relevant individuals and institutions where necessary.

Abstract:
For two years I participated in a European Commission, Tempus Tacis Project, Library Management Development in Moldova. Sheffield University, University College of Borås and the International Independent University in Moldova / Universitatea Libera Internationala din Moldova were the partners in the project. During the project I undertook research to investigate the change process at ULIM Library. The method I used was action research. This felt natural as the features of the project design coincided with the main characteristics in action research, intervention with the intent to achieve changes, strong involvement by the target partners and emphasis on learning. The project achievements were very good and there is a good chance for sustainable changes. There are several reasons for this. The timing of the project proved to be optimal and the enthusiasm and engagement of the staff was very strong. The history of the country and the history of the ULIM also had a positive impact. The economic situation of the country and the economic system within the university are a serious threat to further changes and development. The most striking result of the project was the emancipation of the librarians from their previous roles. New services such as computerised catalogues and databases, together with new premises with open access to shelves made the competencies of the librarians more visible. A new organisational structure and new assignments for the librarians increased the contact and interaction with both students and academic staff.

The purpose of the project was to develop a library of culturally sensitive, and language specific prenatal educational materials for Somali women at Family HealthCare (FHC). The educational materials were provided in both written and DVD form. The assumption being that culturally sensitive, prenatal education is necessary to promote knowledge and understanding in patients and increase engagement of healthcare providers. Prior to language specific resources, Somali women typically refused written informational resources. Somali women when offered culturally sensitive education materials readily accepted the information. The resources used were acquired from various governments and non-profit organization websites. In the course of the project, a library was developed which included educational materials from various government websites, non-profit organizations, Mayo Clinic and the MedlinePlus website. The beginnings of a prenatal education library at FHC was established by access to and selection of appropriate resources from MedlinePlus. The Cass County Public Health nurse will maintain and store the educational resources.

The origins and development of information literacy education at the University of Cape Town are explored. The focal research question is based on investigations into the extent in which the academic staff, librarians and students of the University of Cape Town (UCT) are prepared for or engaged in recognizing information literacy. Are the academic staff, librarians and students of UCT really aware of the information literacy agenda? Quantitative research methods are used to supplement qualitative research methods in this study. Samples were drawn from 621 academics, 64 librarians, and 19978 students - the total numbers of subjects of the study in 2003 when the fieldwork was conducted. The significant changes in the South African education system in the postapartheid era are discussed. International information literacy programs are discussed and the Griffith University information literacy blueprint is adopted as a standard for comparison. Further studies are suggested on the investigation of information literacy policies. The research results suggest that a high standard of information literacy exists at the University of Cape Town.
