Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide a signpost to the librarian that might be helpful in making strategic assessments for the future of the public library, and helping in the process of decision-making about the course to be followed. Thereby critical remarks about the Internet-based “virtual library lobby” are summed up as arguments against following that path blindly, and alternatives to a technology-centred approach are put forward by focusing on the cultural uses of the library as a public place. Design/methodology/approach – In this article a viewpoint is developed, based on an exploration of selected literature on the function of the library as an institution in society, and different viewpoints that are put forward in the debate on the future of libraries in the Internet era are analyzed. Some contend that going virtual is the only feasible course to take. Others emphasize that many functions of the library are unquantifiable because of their cultural nature, and rooted in physical interaction of citizens with a real space of bricks, mortar and books. These functions may never be fully virtualized, but are deemed essential to the community in which the library institution is rooted, and even society at large. Findings – If librarians choose the technological path of the virtual library, they are rapidly being made obsolete by the multinational commercial information aggregators, where free access to information is no longer provided. If the library takes the cultural path, defining its future as an institution instrumental to “the commons” providing freedom to citizens, the actual use citizens make of library as public places should be taken as central starting point for a feasible future, and technology should be used as a means to that end. Research limitations/implications – The article is a viewpoint, based on a limited selection of literature. Practical implications – The viewpoint offers a critical assessment relevant to those librarians responsible for creating a roadmap for the future of their public library. Social implications – This study underpins the importance of the public library as one of the last true public areas, open to all for the benefit of the community. Originality/value – This study offers a different point of view, possibly even a warning call, against embracing technological determinism that brings with it enclosure of The Commons, which the Public Library in its true meaning should offer. Internet-based services are often put forward (and welcomed by many) as the solution for the future for free access to information. In the article, the case is made that unfettered free access for information to citizens is at odds with actual developments on the Internet, that according to leading Internet critics is rapidly being turned into a commercial advertising platform or market place.

Abstract:
Yogyakarta city library applied an open access service system, in which the library users were given access to independently find and take the books in collection shelves. Those users were also asked to return the finished books to the returning books medium in the form of trolleys. Later these books in the trolleys would be returned by the librarians scheduled for shelving duty. Observation result showed that there are a lot of unreturned books because the trolleys of the returning mediums are too full. Librarian also faced many difficulties in classifying the book stacks before returned to the collection shelves because of their messy state. According to the design study and development employing front- end process method, process (Karl & Steven, 2008), this problem could be solved by developing design concept for books returning mediums in the form of shelves contained colors and book codes information according to the standard of Yogyakarta city library. The result design prototype trial showed the increasing library users’ interest to return the finished books to the returning books medium according to the color and code information. It would greatly help the librarians in classifying the books before the re-organizing in the collection shelves. Design development of the returning books medium would also open the opportunity to optimize the temporary flow of returning books which would be easily found by the other library users before the shelving schedule. Keywords: library, open access, book shelf, librarian, library user

Abstract:
<span>Libraries are an integral part of our society’s knowledge repository and even though technological advances such as the internet, smart devices and an ‘always-connected-society’, provide avenues for fast and almost instantaneous access to knowledge, libraries still provide a physical place for the collection and dissemination of knowledge. The prompt shelving of the physical returned library books is an important task in any traditional library. To help speed up the shelving process, this paper proposed and simulated an automated booktruck that is capable of moving returned library books from the return desk back to the shelves. The simulation models currently available robotic hardware and implemented path finding and localization. The simulation results showed that returned books can be delivered to the shelves four times faster than the by using the current practices.</span>

Abstract:
Out On The Shelves is Vancouver’s only Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Two-Spirit, Queer, Intersex, Aromantic/Asexual (LGBT2QIA+) library. Due to recent organizational changes, it has become apparent that its current classification system is no longer working effectively. Not only was the previous system unstructured and confusing, it failed to explicitly represent many aspects of the community it serves. This project was undertaken during the summer of 2018, researching alternative classification and queer issues in knowledge organization to determine how to improve it. This research, combined with careful consideration of the needs of the library itself and its users, suggested that building a local, contextually-situated, classification system would be best. A new classification system has been built for Out On The Shelves Library, and will be implemented in several stages beginning in October 2018, with the end goal to be finished by the end of December 2018. The new system intends to be living and changeable, one that lays bare its structures and decisionmaking processes while centering and celebrating the LGBT2QIA+ community and working within the realities of being a small, unfunded, volunteer-run, public library.

Abstract:
The UDC is attractive to different stakeholders across the information sector because of its wide-spread application, large vocabulary and availability in an electronic format. Modern information retrieval systems have the need but also the capacity to support flexible and interactive retrieval systems. The role of classification in such systems is to serve as an underlying knowledge structure that provides systematic subject organisation and thus complements the search using natural language terms. There are, however, specific requirements that must be satisfied in order to make efficient use of classification and these are not well known outside the library domain and are poorly implemented in library systems. This is especially the case for synthetic classifications, such as UDC, because its elements are meant to be manipulated by the system to fulfill different functions (a flexible systematic display, browsing or search purposes). This report summarizes the most important functionalities of the UDC that need to be taken into account during the implementation process. Important issues about the relation between the UDC schedules in electronic form - UDC Master Reference File and a classification tool (an authority file) that may be built on it, are highlighted. A better understanding of the UDC system's functionality may improve or facilitate its implementation and lower the costs of system maintenance which may be relevant for both prospective users and legacy systems.

Hancock-Beaulieu, Micheline. "Subject searching behaviour at the library catalogue and at the shelves : evaluating the impact of an online public access catalogue." Thesis, City University London, 1989. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/7946/.

Full text
Abstract:
Searching behaviour in a university library is studied using a holistic approach encompassing the use of bibliographic tools and browsing at the shelves. The project was designed as a 'before and after' study to evaluate the impact of an online catalogue on subject searching behaviour. A combined methodology was devised using a talk-aloud technique, observation, and screen logging facility to elicit both verbal and non-verbal data from users in their searching activity at the manual bibliographic tools, including a microfiche catalogue and printed PRECIS index and at the online catalogue, as well as at the shelves. The data was recorded on a highly structured dual questionnaire and observation form with some real time expert interpretation. The limitations of the methodological approach of previous catalogue use studies are highlighted suggesting that subject searching as a basic primary need had been previously underestimated. The online catalogue does not seem to have increased the extent of subject searching nor the use of the bibliographic tool. An extensive qualitative analysis correlating expressed topics, search formulation strategies and documents retrieved at the shelves reveals the adaptive nature of the subject searching process, whereby the user adapts to the structure of the tools available. The PRECIS index supports a contextual approach for broad search formulations and more interactive reformulations whereas the OPAC encouraged a matching approach and narrow formulations with fewer but user generated reformulations. The success rate of the online catalogue was slightly better than that for the PRECIS index but fewer items were retrieved at the shelves. Nonusers of the bibliographic tools seemed to be just as successful. The information retrieval task in both searching environments is tailored by the system to a single one dimensional sequential process. It is suggested that a major obstacle to subject searching effectiveness may lie in the lack of interaction between the different subject access elements: the indexing language, the classification and the titles. The study concludes that to improve retrieval effectiveness online catalogues should cater for both matching and contextual approaches to searching. Recent research indicates that a more interactive process could be promoted by providing query expansion through a combination of searching aids for matching, for search formulation assistance and for structured contextual retrieval.

Abstract:
Recent legislation in Sweden mandates that all students beprovided access to a school library. In addition, schools areexpected to help students become independent and life-longlearners. Various national organizations stress theimportance of a school library in this process; however, reportedly independent schools use public libraries and theInternet for information activities instead. This studyexplores: 1) how independent schools in Sweden can meetboth government requirements to provide library accessand the information literacy demands of their students, and2) the function of digital libraries in this context. After acomparison of previous research, a qualitative method waschosen based on socio-cultural theoretical assumptions.Semi-structured interviews were conducted with aprincipal, a teacher, and a focus group of students from twoindependent schools. Through a process of open coding, important themes emerged concerning how libraries andinformation literacy are conceptualized. There is a strongtendency to see libraries in terms of a physical function(books on shelves) over social activities (e.g., integrationwith teachers, development of information literacies, collection management). Students rely first and foremoston Google during the information seeking process, but alsoconsult each other for help. There are also signs thatstudents are discouraged from asking their teachers for helpduring the information seeking process. The findingsindicate that current educator attitudes may hinder thedevelopment of digital school libraries.

Abstract:
My project is about the library of Kungsholmen, spaces for interaction and theactivity of reading. In the beginning of the 20th century The public libraries of Sweden was born out of the idea that the “people” needed to be educated. Collective public education became the instrument by which the people would become more involved in creating a modern society. Throughout the 20th century the library grew stronger and together with the idea of “Folkhemmet” they turned into strong and distinctive symbols of the collective civic value and democracy. The access of knowledge and a built environment for everyone is two of the fundamental values when speaking of the library. At Kungsholmens the library is cramped away within the rumbling noise of the intersection of SanktEriksgatan / Drottningholmsvägen. Here you find the entrance to the third most visited library in the Stockholm region with about 2000 visitors/day. There has been a decision made for transforming the property that the library is a part of into a new large Shopping mall. As the early plans show, one of the entrances to the mall will cut straight through the library space leaving the visitors to pass through the shopping mall when moving within the library space. The library holds a tempo and carries a certain atmosphere, an atmosphere that I find difficult to combine within a shopping mall environment. But also thefundamental thought that Valfrid Palmgren had, the author of the public library inSweden in the beginning of the 20th century, that the library was to be free from external and commercial forces. I therefor find it somehow problematic having to pass through a shopping mall to be able to access the public space of the library. I therefor propose a new site and a new context for the library of Kungsholmen.

Owing to the instability of and lack of earthquake-resistance devices in their shelving equipment, several libraries suffered serious damage in the two Taiwanese earthquakes of 1999. The purpose of this experiment is to analyze the main reasons for those problems, and to introduce some methods to counter them. This research can be split into four sections: 1. The history of cantilever library shelving failure was studied in order to discover why various types of shelves were destroyed under strong excitation. 2. System identification tests are a convenient means by which to identify the dynamic behavior of cantilever library shelves, including their fundamental frequencies. 3. Here follows the process of testing cantilever shelf materials for earthquake resistance properties: System Identification Test and Dynamic Breakdown Test 4. After studying the basic properties of the material and the conditions under which they destruct, methods to strengthen the anti-seismic capability of cantilever library shelves. A set of seismic safety standards for both library shelving in general and cantilever library shelves in particular according to the concept of Performance-Based-Design is established. Earthquakes can be expected to cause vibrational motions in freestanding book shelves, which, since they are often not fastened or are inadequately anchored, may cause damage by falling or toppling over. One can narrow down various instability issues into two groups: in-plane and out-of-plane. In-plan instability: 1. In-plane instability occurs when the ground moves in the longitudinal direction with respect to the stack range. The freestanding shelve system may either sway, overturn, slide, or jump from its original position. 2. The shelves themselves remain intact due to the use of steel cross braces in between the two sides of a double faced bracket section, which provide adequate rigidity for each section. But if brace ends were only hooked at the connection points, these ends may be loosened in the earthquake motion and render bracings useless. Out-of-plane instability: 1. Out-of-plane instability is a matter of greater importance because of the possibility of a ‘domino effect’ collapse, which can be highly dangerous. 2. The lack of out-of-plane stability in freestanding shelves can be alleviated by employing proper anchoring and other stabilization methods. 3. A highly effective method for stiffening rows of freestanding shelves is to use the installed steel channels or strut channels. Top bracing is the surest method against overturning and minimizes the number of books falling off of shelves.

Abstract:
This master thesis deals with an issue of optimizing organization of the library shelves in the T.G. Masaryk Library of Social Sciences in Jinonice. The first part focuses on theory and defines basic concepts of organizing open access shelves. The next part provides a comparison of open access collections in selected libraries with particular emphasis on methods of books shelving. The core part describes rearrangement of the Library's collection on the basis of implementing new categorization scheme ordered in a subject-territory manner. The thesis also presents results of a survey asking whether this new arrangement enables more effective searching in the Library's open access collection.

Karim. "Leaving the bridge, passing the shelters : understanding homeless activism through the utilization of spaces within the Central Public Library and the IUPUI Library in Indianapolis." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1805/5928.

Abstract:
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)
By definition, homelessness refers to general understanding of people without a home or a roof over their heads. As consequences of a number of factors, homelessness has become a serious problem especially in cities throughout the United States. Homeless people are usually most visible on the streets and in settings like shelters due to the fact that their presences and activities in public spaces are considered illegal or at least “unwanted” by city officials and by members of the public. In response to this issue, activists throughout the country have worked tiresly on behalf of homeless people to demand policy changes, an effort that resulted in the passage of the homeless bill of rights in three states, namely Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Illinois. As I discovered through my fieldwork, in Indiana, the homeless, themselves, are currently lobbying for passage of a similar measure. Locating my fieldwork on homelessness in Indianapolis in two sites, the Indianapolis Marion County Public Library (the Central Library) and the IUPUI Library, I examine the use of library buildings as alternative temporary shelters and spaces where the homeless can organize for political change. As an Indonesian ethnographer, I utilized an ethnographic approach, which helped me to reveal “Western values” and “American culture” as they play out in the context of homelessness. In this thesis, I show that there is a multi-sited configuration made up of issues, agents, institutions, and policy processes that converge in the context of the use of library buildings by the homeless. Finally, I conclude that public libraries and university libraries as well can play a more important role beyond their original functions by undertaking tangible actions, efforts, engagements, and interventions to act as allies to the homeless, who are among their most steadfast constituencies. By utilizing public university library facilities, the homeless are also finding their voices to call for justice, for better treatment, and for policies that can help ameliorate the hardship and disadvantages of homelessness.

Abstract:
AbstractDogs have for long been humans’ best friend, but the human–dog relationship can be problematic. A mismatch between dogs and their keepers can lead to welfare problems for both; for example: breeding for a specific look can result in health and welfare problems and importing dogs from other countries can lead to zoonoses. In our view, many of these problems could be avoided if wannabe dog keepers reflected better before deciding to obtain a specific dog. Attempting to influence this decision, however, assumes that we know what the right choice is. In this chapter, we discuss three cases: pups with pedigrees, pups without pedigrees, and adult dogs from (foreign) shelters. We show that, in each case, certain moral assumptions are made whose legitimacy can be problematised. We conclude that the decision about what dog to obtain is not a straightforward one and that it is often difficult to establish what is actually the right choice. However, we also pinpoint certain improvements that can be made to the current system and make a number of suggestions that make the right choice the easier choice. As Anthropocene conditions may lead to the domestication of an increasing number of wild species in the future, this analysis may support reflection on the ethical implications of domestication.

A parallel chapter to the first, “The Public Library” examines the public libraries of the ideal future that the utopian novelists imagined. Many of the innovations they imagined correct problems that real public libraries faced in late-nineteenth-century America. They make public libraries convenient to all utopian citizens, who enjoy using them regularly. Many utopian novelists give the public library a prominent place in town, giving it symbolic value: A great city must have a great library. In the ideal future, the public library would open its shelves to everyone instead of cautiously guarding its books against the public. Many of the utopian novelists imagined ways to manage the proliferation of print. Their solutions often sound more dystopian than utopian: many foresaw the destruction of many books in the future.

Abstract:
The second chapter discusses the thematic profile of the books held in the Ashrafiya. The teaching in this institution was focused on Koran recitation and its patron al-Ashraf has been depicted in modern scholarship as a rather narrow-minded Sunni ruler. Consequently, one might expect a run-off-the-mill diet of books emanating from a small number of disciplines. The chapter challenges such assumptions and shows that books relating to disciplines such as Koran, ḥadīth and even law are small in number. Rather we find a broad range of topics covered, including the antique knowledge (e.g. Aristotle and Galen), medicine, pharmacology, pre-Islamic poetry, theology and mirror for princes. This is also reflected in the content of those works that were held in multiple copies: the library’s most popular book were the Maqāmāt by al-Ḥarīrī with 15 copies. The chapter is also challenge dominating assumptions about madrasa-libraries with regard to sectarian issues (the library had many Shiite works) and issues of high culture vs low culture (it contained many ‘low-culture’ works).

Abstract:
In our current era of disinformation, ready access to trustworthy sources is critical. “Fake news,” sophisticated disinformation campaigns, and propaganda distort the common reality, polarize communities, and threaten open democratic systems. What citizens, journalists, and policymakers need is a canonical source of trusted information. For millions, that trusted source resides in the books and journals housed in libraries, curated and vetted by librarians. Yet today, as we turn inevitably to our screens for information, if a book isn’t digital, it is as if it doesn’t exist. To address this gap, the Internet Archive is actively working with the world’s great libraries to digitize their collections and to make them available to users via controlled digital lending, a process whereby libraries can loan digital copies of the print books on their shelves. By bringing millions of missing books and academic literature online, libraries can empower journalists, researchers, and Wikipedia editors to cite the best sources directly in their work, grounding readers in the vetted, published record, and extending the investment that libraries have made in their print collections.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper (part two of two) discusses the concepts generated by the Center for Automation Technologies, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, for an automation system for the New York State Talking Book and Braille Library (TBBL). It describes the last several module concepts in the system, designed to assist the TBBL staff in the processing of “talking books” (books on cassette), and discusses system simulations, and conclusions from this work. Part one discussed the assessment of needs, requirements, and process flow (all of which are summarized here), as well as the first several modules in the system. The primary purposes for this modular system are 1. To assist the TBBL in meeting increased throughput demands and 2. To reduce work-related injury claims. The modules are designed to work individually (as to allow the possibility of similar libraries in other states to purchase modules as desired), and facilitate incremental implementation toward a complete system (for maximized benefit). In this paper, the modules discussed are the latch closer, label remover, and the virtual turnaround shelves system.

Abstract:
A case study for a public library which aim to become nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) is presented. Due to buildings location in the city center of a medium sized municipality from Romania, important site limits have to be considered, as well as other pre-existent conditions. These conditions significantly limit the technological options that can be implemented to ensure nZEB compliance. Also, the destination itself of the building (library with free access to the shelves), imposes a specific energy profile (considering the intrinsic energy demand for its normal operation) and is limiting the inclusion into a very specific nZEB benchmark. Between obligations and possibilities, a cutting-edge package of technical solutions is detailed, which allows the building in operation to produce final energy almost as much as it consumes. However, a paradoxical situation is identified, in the sense that the building does not fit into the nZEB benchmarks, nor into the outlined ZEB benchmarks if the total primary energy is considered (both from conventional and renewable sources), although the implementation of the technical solutions actually lead the building to inclusion towards a CO2 zero-emission building (with a calculated value for the CO2 emissions of 5,26 kgCO2/m2.year and significantly reduced final energy consumption). Thus, a structural problem in the nZEB and ZEB concepts (as defined in the EU framework) is identified, especially in the context of making these concepts mandatory in the EU member states.

Abstract:
This paper proposes a new perspective on the definition itself that describes the current libraries. We are used to the traditional libraries, with imposing shelves of books. The perception of the library services is changing; people want the integration of the services into the virtual world. The internet is the second world, the second life, we are all part of this new kind of world and the library services are taking part in this virtualization. This research analyses the gamification of the libraries, and how this process is present in these institutions. The aim is to approach the new medium from the perspective of young people, video gaming representing a way of meeting other players, creating communities in a virtual world. Some people tend to reject the term gamer, as people that reject this term believe that gamers are different, disconnected from the real world, there is this stigma of being a gamer. In this paper, we will show that gamers can be an important part of the contemporary culture, that they are important for the libraries. The info-documentary structures are part of this main process of technologization, the new technologies are finding their place in our cultural structures. The libraries are nowadays digital structures at the level of collections and services, adapting to the new habits of young information consumers. This research brings out a new perspective on the mission of the libraries, where we should have modern services, there should be full integration of the systems for the digital medium.

Abstract:
Linear static and free vibration behavior of laminated composite square base spherical shell panel has been investigated using finite element method. The present shell panel model is developed using ANSYS parametric design language code in ANSYS platform. The model is discretised using an eight nodded serendipity element (SHELL281) with six degrees of freedom per node from ANSYS element library. The responses are obtained using Gauss elimination and Block-Lanczos steps for the static and free vibration analysis, respectively. The results are computed using present developed model and the convergence test has also been done. Based on the convergence new results are obtained and compared with published results. The numerical simulations done for different parameters showing that the parameters such as thickness ratios, curvature ratios and lay up sequences have significant effect on transverse central deflections and fundamental free vibration frequencies of the shell structures.
