Abstract:

The role of the academic library has shifted from developing book collections to serving the information and technology needs of students and faculty. The needs of library users change more quickly and unpredictably than the needs of books, and library directors have pushed beyond the traditional incremental approach to library development to respond to changing needs. As many universities struggle to balance budgets, library directors must demonstrate the value and demand for library spaces and services to justify investments in construction and renovation projects. This study investigates the reasons that the new library space projects were undertaken and the forces driving decisions about investments in the library facilities. The cases in this dissertation present studies of three private, non-profit liberal arts institutions in the Eastern United States that have recently invested in major renovation or construction projects for new library spaces. At each site, interviews and focus group sessions were conducted with librarians, students, faculty, and library administrators. Archival material was researched to supplement the data collected from the subjects of the interviews. A multi-lens framework of strategic change is used to examine the forces and factors that influenced the decisions to pursue new library spaces in each case study. The institutions in the study successfully developed new learning commons and library spaces through renovation or construction projects. Each of the libraries in the study faced similar factors leading to a new space, including overcrowding, interest from students in collaborative learning, increased demand for access to technology, and the decline in the use of the printed book. The strong leadership of the library director, with support from the institution’s president, contributed to the success of each project in the study. The importance of this study derives from its examination of the changing factors and forces that drive the uses of new library spaces, highlighting the need to build flexibility into new construction projects.

Abstract:
The project is the expansion of the Stockholm public library. Engaging in study from the misconstrued translations of images, a "transition space" next to the old library. There are four aspects of interpretation for the word "transition" in my project: path, shape, type and memory. During the year in studio 5, imagine reality, I delves into the issue of integrate forms through the misinterpretation of images. The spaces were created by making use of technologies to transform 2d images to 3d volumes, and were developed to respond to site context and the program requirements, primarily through a series of strategic Boolean operations. It is irrational and accidental, but provides more possibilities for architecture design.

This thesis examines the dilemma of the common object in a liberal pluralist society. Situating the arguments in Hannah Arendt's The Human Condition, the thesis investigates the notion of the Space of Appearance in the contemporary city as providing a common platform for exchange. This Space of Appearance is conceived of through the linking of two public and democratic infrastructures -- mass transport lines and the public library. By symbiotically linking the two infrastructures, a space for action and speech emerges that creates concern for the collective object, thereby affirming the reality provided by the public realm. Using Toronto, Ontario as a case study of multicultural pluralism, the thesis examines the location of Southern Ontario in North America as a precursor to Toronto's multicultural success. From here, the study zooms into a specific site in the center of Toronto entitled "CityPlace." CityPlace is an island formed and bounded through massive infrastructural separation, while simultaneously situated at the convergence of the city's flows. It is this "neither zone" of both Southern Ontario, and more locally, CityPlace that is believed to strengthen its ability to embrace pluralism. An urban design proposal for this foreign island of CityPlace investigates the common object in pluralism at the scale of the city. Lastly, this thesis investigates the common object in pluralism at the scale of architecture, namely the public library. through situating the discourse of the library in a historic lineage, the current dilemmas of library design are extracted. A new typology is developed which directly addresses these problems, the CityPlace island, and Arendt's notion of plurality.
(cont.) As the medium of library information increasingly changes to non-spatially bound forms, the primary role of the new typology is repositioned as its ability to provide a common meeting ground for the city. Through an investigation of pluralism, the thesis proposes an Infrastructural Space of Appearance that provides a collective platform for exchange at the scale of the city and building, in the liberal pluralist city of Toronto.

Abstract:
The library program has experienced continued evolvement of spatial conditions with respect to technological advancements and the changing needs of the general public. Recent precedents have begun to remove physical book stacks from the user experience in exchange for improved efficiency of space. There is value in maintaining the presence of book stacks because it is a gesture towards tradition and the "existence will" of the program. This thesis explores the organization of the three program components which define the ideal modern library: archive, social, and digital media spaces. Considering modern libraries offer more communally charged programmatic spaces, maintaining the integration of archive spaces throughout the scheme can strengthen the gradient of public to private conditions. The collective balance of the archive, social, and digital media spaces gives communities the opportunity to come together for ideal intergenerational exchange and co-creation.

New school buildings are met with questions in growing cities like Stockholm: How to place them? Which scale? What use, degree of openness, and flexibility, and for whom? This reflection has been made in relation to a suburban area, resulting in a proposal for smaller schools supported by another, shared, building that welcomes more specific activities and is open to the public. It would offer more specialized and adapted spaces to cooking, sewing, music and dance classes, as well as a bigger library and would intensify their use.

Abstract:
In todayâ s society, awash with digital media, the physical book should still be treated as a valuable object. It is a symbol of knowledge and, in the same way that the stones of historic buildings tell the story of their times, the physical book carries the truths of the past to each new generation, not only by the words it contains, but in how it is bound and set and worn. The library rises around the book, offering shelves that may be explored, allowing people to discover as they browse. The neighborhood library serves as an anchor for the community; without physical books, the library is gutted of its essential purpose, becoming merely a community gathering place. Members of the community must be given space to move through the books as they progress from the public realm of the street into the semipublic space of a library reading room, and perhaps beyond to their private places of study. Each stage of their journey should be a clearly defined â placeâ with its own purpose and potential. At the same time, the spatial boundaries in this progression must be integrated in order to invite people to move from one to another, to discover the books and the knowledge contained within. My thesis project has explored and developed these theoretical ideas into a library and housing project for Washington, DCâ s West End neighborhood.

Abstract:
In this project, the challenges facing public libraries and the emerging trend of involving users in library development have been combined with inspiration from the field of urban media design. The aim has been to explore what behaviors public media surfaces designed for culture and exchange could possess, and to argue for the benefits of integrating the library in the urban fabric. The result is a proposed set of tactics for how the library can consciously work with allowing patrons to leave and follow traces. It is manifested in a concept that creates a narrative around each library book, print as well as ebook, and makes its journey tangible by visualizing its digital patina. The system also allows patrons to leave ebooks at designated nodes around the city, thus influencing which books are made available where.

Abstract:
Scholarly Electronic Publishing, Library Space Planning
There is legitimate enthusiasm for scholarly electronic publishing and its potentials. However, the key question for libraries is not whether electronic publishing will continue to grow in importance, but rather how quickly it will displace printed books and journals in the specialized scholarly publishing marketplace. An increasing number of academic libraries face severe space problems, and supplementing print publications with electronic versions will not save library space--it will increase space needs in the near term as a growing number of workstations are added to provide access to electronic information. It is only when the library replaces print with electronic sources that the potential to save space emerges as a result of electronic publishing. If Nostradamus were alive, he might be able to predict when scholarly electronic publishing will reach such a critical mass. This essay will not try to do so; however, it will briefly outline some critical factors that may slow the evolution of scholarly electronic publishing, extend the life of the printed word, and necessitate the continued existence of physical library facilities.

Abstract:
The focus of this two year master’s thesis in Library- and Information science is the study of two Swedish Public Library buildings with the examples Lomma and Halmstad. The main goal and purpose of the thesis is to try to uncover which views and values of the public library are expressed in the examined libraries; and to what extent these views manifests are shown in its architecture. The theoretical framework is based on Raymond Williams’s cultural concepts of effective, dominant culture and the two extremities of this culture, called residual and emergent cultures. A second aspect is Yi-Fu Tuans concepts of Space and Place. The study also uses a historical background of Swedish Public Library Buildings. By close reading and textual analyses, the empirical study focuses on the municipalities’ documents surrounding the building of the library buildings in Lomma and Halmstad. The architectural perspective is studied through the architects own documents and architectural journals discussing the built Library Buildings. Results show that the technological advances of the time these libraries were built has put them in a position of change, which also is visible in the architecture. The libraries in Lomma and Halmstad function as civic icons of the community and the architecture is very dependent of the places where they are situated. The expressions of the two libraries differ in details but the overall result show that the values exhibited behind the building of the examined libraries is a part of a historical residual culture, functioning as effective and dominant. The conclusion of the thesis is that the expression of the architecture is however a part of an emergent culture. The buildings aim to comprise the values and display the diverse causes in its architecture. The buildings seek to manifest the ideal activity and working of the modern Public Library.

Abstract:

A large part of research about libraries and library buildings in Sweden has been focused on how the building looks not how it functions with the library. The aim with this master’s thesis is to study how a library building is functioning and how its users are experiencing it. This is studied in three libraries, Kungliga tekniska högskolans bibliotek, Sambiblioteket in Härnösand and Vitterhetsakademiens bibliotek. With the questions of how they were planed, what did the libraries want from the new building and which of these demands were realized. The theory and method will are inspired from Daniel Koch and Inger Bergström.I have visited these libraries and also have read the few published articles about them. I have, too, interviewed librarians and users in the libraries. These libraries have all established a new library building in the 2100th century. The study shows that is not always easy to build a new library. There are a lot of actors involved in the planning, and that effects how the library will function in the building as well how the users move within and experience the room.

Abstract:
The new public library building needs to meet a lot of diverse demands. It has to be developed in conjunction with librarian's needs, it has to react on existing urban conditions and it needs to be self-defining and future oriented, so it will be able to cope with radical changes in the communications we experience nowadays. Our proposition is a reaction to the impulses of the site combined with our view of what a new library should represent. It is: communication, interaction, inspiration. We try to eliminate negative aspects of the selected site and on the other hand, use and develop existing potential. The building tries to terminate the big crossroads next to the site and on the contrary to create a nice quiet public space with the church. It also wants to be a new landmark and icon of the town. The solution we found is based on two main principles. A fence. And a hill. Fence as a guard and prevention from crossroads, as a closure of the urban block and public space with green and church building inside, as a boarder with the industrial part of the town, as a show-off wall, a allure to the world of wisdom and quiet public space behind... It is represented by double glass facade along the border of the site. Hill as an activator of the site, as an icon and a brand of the place, as a second hill in whole town, as an island and oasis, as a place for sport, play, as an open public reading room, as a natural amphitheatre... It consists of a simple green roof raising from the church towards the sky, covering the library buiding.

Abstract:
The San Juan de Lurigancho Public Library has as emphasis the perception of the limits (the relation between the architecture and the streets). This project aims to give an alternative solution to the architectonical problem which is the limit. The problem is defined as the user’s perception of the public space, the one that displays the indifferent character of the city on the user’s necessities. The typology emerges as the solution to the emphasis. The library is thought as a diffusion medium of information and attraction to the people. The public character has a direct relationship with the kind of user that would be ideal for this institution as San Juan de Lurigancho has one of the highest numbers in analphabetism and poverty in the city of Lima. This is the reason why this district conditions the necessity of the proposed infrastructure. The proposal of this thesis was born while searching for a solution to a real problem, the relationship between a project and its surroundings. It shows the interaction that can happen between the architecture and the user’s perception.

Abstract:
University libraries struggle to keep up with rapidly changing technology and the associated change in teaching strategy. Most administrators and librarians are often not trained to assess space needs and struggle to reassign library spaces for non-traditional library use. As such, they often embark on expensive and time-consuming feasibility studies, using (typically) hard-earned monies to complete the research or to pilot a new space. What academic research library administrators and staff lack is an analysis tool for discovering and planning needed renovations and improvements in aging library facilities. The purpose of this research project was to determine how students use library spaces for learning in this new high-tech, hands-on education experience (i.e. synthesis of previous research); develop a tool that can be used by library staff to self-analyze existing academic library spaces, identifying areas that could be improved for student benefit (e.g. provide a checklist of potential learning spaces that institutions should carefully consider adding to their facilities); and provide some examples/case studies of potential facility improvements. The end result is a hierarchical self-analysis tool that merges space options, Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, and an example of library-user personas. It also provides some general cost guidelines, helpful construction tips, and a synthesis of exploratory questions related to strategy and space. The tool uses evidence-based design to facilitate important conversations, provide an organized checklist of various considerations, and be a quick reference for library administrators and facility managers as they navigate the world of twenty-first century pedagogy and student learning.

Abstract:
The goal of this thesis is a design of a public library in the historical part of the city of Přerov. The locality that’s beeing solved, so called Na Marku, is situated at the point where the three important pedestrian routes meet on the bank of the Bečva river. Attractivness of the place is well increased by the nearness of both the main squares, the river and the unique well-preserved underpass used in the past by the brewery. Every landscape, every city and place have their own memory. The locality „Na Marku“ is packed with memories that run back to the first settlements on the river bank, the construction of the city walls, and up to the recent reconstruction of the Tyrš bridge. Throughout the history the place was formed by the local inhabitans and their varoius activities. Those gave origin to historical and spatial layers that overlay and complement each other and have – in Přerov, as well as anywhere in the world – a huge influence on one’s identification with a familiar place. This is where the church used to be. This is the path that leads down to the river. This is where the lime-tree blossoms fall down like snow in summer. In my thesis I aim for truly understanding the “genius loci” and designing a building that would bring a new sense of life to this weary but memorable locality.

The toy library emerged in the middle of the last century since then we could see its expansion around the world. However, its understanding appears to be a complex task because these spaces receive direct influence of society and its cultures that leave them their specificity both the public and the direction that attends as on its goals by having a variety of readings and thoughts that is produced. In Brazil, Toy libraries have been established as educational and recreational spaces and universities have created representatives in the highest category of university toy libraries. This thesis socializes the course and results of a research that the observation of this scenario took as its object of the Federal University of Goiás`toy library - Catalão regional aiming a better understanding of this space. The theoretical research support was given by a field which brought together the accumulated production of the object in the work of authors such as Santos (1995, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2008), Silva (2000), Kishimoto (1997, 1998, 2011), Brougère (1995, 1996, 2002, 2004) e Cunha (1997, 2001, 2005, 2010, 2014), such the contributions about Lefebvre (2006) about space, production , reproduction and analysis, Certeau (1994 ) for analysis of the object in the daily prism and others like Leite (1998) and Kossoy (1989 , 1999, 2001 , 2002) that uses photographs as support. Regarding the methodology for the admission of a look and a typical sensitive listening to the narratives it was structured from the realization of a field research that used two data collection tools. The first , a documentary research in the archives of Ludoteca UFG/RC (for project access, regulations and organizational routines and data as frequency and public) and the photographic collection of the researcher (ex librarian) for selection of photographs for the years 2011 -2013 . The second, performing scripted interviews with two guys working in the toy library: two (2) toy librarians and the coordinator. In addition it was also accessed over the entire search the memory of the researcher. The data were treated following the guidelines of the Bardin (1977) content analysis adding the use of software for analyzing qualitative data. The results allow us to point out that Ludoteca UFG/RC is understood as space traversed by numerous looks and conceptions of the world, of childhood, of playfulness posing in their daily lives both reproductive behavior/transmissive culture as the offender aspect of the production of new way not only for those elements but also to the training itself, to research, to the extent that they are proper elements of the university.

In the area with a strong past where river Flon was covered with 3 horizontal platforms and changed into industrial area there is now a new cultural center of the city growing. Our diploma thesis is a proposal to transform one of the blocks into a municipal library of Lausanne. The library is conceived as two objects turned towards each other with even and silk double glass facade as if it was one object sliced into two. It creates an exterior space in the system of whole platform. Interior is a system of bigger spaces, where you can go to light, and smaller spaces, where you can go for silent and concentration.

Abstract:
This research is based on reflexive practice as a subject librarian for visual art, concerned with representation (of artists) and context (of art practice and its representation) in the academic library, as a heterotopia. My thesis is that the aim to create an ‘alternative’ art space remained operative in London between 1995 and 2005, although the term was decried. The research addresses the problem of documentation of transient contemporary art practices, by collecting and analysing ephemera and developing a resource based upon them. Art ephemera are by-products of institutions, galleries, exhibitions, and curatorialactivities that may be significant in terms of criticality but which are often not recorded adequately and remain un-archived. The strategies of representation that ephemera mobilise take place at an interface of art aims and social structures, an area that has been a vital site of contemporary practice. I review major issues in contemporary criticism of the ‘avant-garde’ and ‘alternative’,showing the discourse of the alternative to be an ethical discourse about practice. Identifying citation as means of interpretation, I draw my account from a reading ofephemera in the chapters: “Citation, marginalia, mockery, fakes and tailpieces” where I identify visual and textual qualities of ephemera, “Artists, spaces and institutions,”where I present the themes of mapping London and self-institutionalisation, and “Counter to ?” where I report a distancing from counter-cultural aims and development of complex alternatives. I evaluate existing collections of art ephemera in libraries, projects to facilitate access to them, and cataloguing and collecting policies. I advocate use of catalogues to recontextualise ephemera. In conclusion, I present a complex notion of ‘alternative space’ in art practice as a space for dialogue with, rather than opposition to established institutions and circuits of contemporary art and I endorse collection of ephemera as a source for diverse histories.

Abstract:
In our digitalized world, there are ongoing discussions about the public library as a physical place and if it still has a role in our society. Even though many public libraries in Sweden and other western countries are being closed because of political and economic cuts, people still visit the public library. This gives an indication that the library is important not only as a place to borrow books, but as a physical place. This study will try to find answers to how the library space is being used by the visitors by examining when people come to the library, what people do in the library and who these people are. To find answers to these questions, empirical data based upon observations of the library space has been collected. The method of observation used was the TTTmethod (Track the Traffic) developed by the Norwegian scientist Tord Høivik. The TTT-method is a simple method to observe how the different spaces of the library are being used by walking through all the spaces in the library whilst observing what activities are being done. This is repeated at certain times during the library’s opening hours and over a certain period. In this study, the observations were done in three different time-intervals during the day (morning, daytime and evening), over a twoweek period and resulted in 779 registered observations. These data will be analysed in relation to the four space-model developed by the Danish scientist Dorte Skot-Hansen. The model specifies four overall goals of the public library which are experience, involvement, empowerment and innovation and the different possibilities, described in the model as spaces, that the library can offer to fulfil these goals. These four spaces are inspiration, learning, meeting and performative space. In this study, the space that is mostly used, is knowledge, but in the daytime and the evening, the meeting space is also often used. The activities registered are mostly done by adult people. Children and young people are not often observed in the library-space, which gives an indication that this group, which is a priority in the Swedish library act, is not being attended to as it should be according to this. It is also a quite interesting result that activities done by young people often are activities done in a group of people.

Abstract:
The word "context" originates in "contextus", which is Latin for "weaving." An architectural question arises as to how a building can so integrate itself with a community that is it truly woven into the urban fabric. The Shaw Neighborhood branch of the District of Columbia Public Library system closed in 2004. The building at the intersection of 7th Street and Rhode Island Avenue could no longer serve the needs of the community, and shall be replaced by a new facility on the same site. What are the needs of the community that should be addressed, and by what methods? As a civic building, what role will the new library play beyond that of a place to find books? What are the contexts that the new architecture will confront, and how does this building transcend the contexts of the present to endure as something equally valuable in the future?

"Light, whose beauty within darkness is as jewels that one might cup in one's hands; light that hollowing out darkness and piercing our bodies, blows life into `space"'.'Tadao AndoThis thesis book documents the process and procedure of a two-year study of how daylight can be manipulated by design to enhance and elevate the experiential qualities of sacred space and then applies those characteristics to the design of an architectural thesis project. The exploration involved two major points of focus: one was the exploration to identify the principle qualities and characteristics of natural light and the other, to apply those principles of light into built form. This paper is presented in five processes: an introduction, three types of reflection, and a conclusion. Process I, presents the theoretical underpinning on the subject of light and identifies the key qualities and characteristics of light and the daylighting principles applied by Louis I. Kahn and Tadao Ando in the formulation of sacred space. Process II, presents the articulation of the necessary criteria to design a sacred space. Process III, applies the daylighting strategies to the design of a "one-volume" library for displaying Leonardo da Vinci's Codex. Process IV, presents an alternate scenario and an explanation of architecture as meaning. Process V, summerizes the meaning of the architecture and experience of the Library. Abstract:
This research aims to develop a Public Media Library for all users in the Independencia district. An in-depth study of the site, users and referential projects was made and all this helped us to design a building that solves the main problem of this district. Independencia is the economic center of the North of Lima. However, most of the people who are at the head of the micro-enterprises do not have a complete education and a global vision of the field in which they work. This situation is the main problem of the district. Therefore, the answer to this problem is to offer the users an option where they can obtain accredited information in an easy, fast and practical way, even if they use the building as an information machine in itself. In this way pedestrians may be educated just by passing inside or outside the building. The Media Library was placed at the intersection of two main avenues in the district, Túpac Amaru and Izaguirre, at the intersection of three zoning areas (housing, commerce and education) so that the media library could reach a wider variety of users. It seeks to provide a public space where different users interact with each other so that the building can be joined with a two- way relationship with its immediate environment. It seeks to provide a communitary service to the immediate context, because within of its radius of influence, there are many educational institutions that do not have suitable places to study.

Abstract:
In today's highly competitive landscape, new product development strategies are imperatives for companies to create and sustain competitive advantages. The objective of this research is to develop an integrated approach to automate, or aid, the design problem solving process. An Integrated Design System (IDS) is proposed focusing on the parametric and detail design. In this system, generation and evaluation of new design problems occur quickly and easily by changing the inputs for the design model. The IDS provides an integrated platform to incorporate available application programs such as CAD and FEM tools into a single system. Four major frameworks, namely information handling, problem decomposition, design space characterization, and problem solving, are proposed and embedded in it to implement the product development process. The information handling includes five aspects. A naming protocol is devised to organize the historical design cases. A search algorithm is proposed to retrieve a design case. A system-generated report is used to distribute the design information. A constraint definition frame is presented to define the relationships between design parameters. Two schemas, information matrix and constraint tree, are developed to represent information in the IDS. A diagonal-centered decomposition scheme is developed utilizing a Genetic Algorithm to decompose a complex design problem. In addition to the conventional genetic operators, two novel genetic operators, unequal position crossover and insertion mutation, are proposed. To characterize the design space, two methods, Incremental Response Method (IRM) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN), are presented. The IRM is derived from response surface method, while the back-propagated ANN is coded to be self-evaluated. The presented problem solving algorithm constitutes the solving mechanism of the IDS. Based on the assessment of the design objectives, all design parameters are given a priority index to facilitate the parameter selection. An independent recursive method is introduced in this algorithm to handle the design constraints. The case studies are performed on two design problems: a hard disk drive actuator arm and a shaft. The results show that the system can automatically align parameter values towards the objective values in a reasonable manner, and thus verify the feasibility of the embedded frameworks.

Abstract:
Lost&Found Videothek is the concept for an interactive video library thought for users engaged in an exploratory research mode, in which content is organized according to a collaborative, subjective and implicit indexing system for the enhancement of serendipity. This idea was the result of a design-based research with a user-centered approach in the field of information retrieval. With the use of design methods such as heuristic UX evaluation, co-sketching, and other original design experiments, the project aimed at identifying the most valuable qualities of physical and digital libraries in order to integrate them within one retrieval system.

Abstract:
Some news areas in biology ,chemistry and computing interface, have emerged in order to respond the numerous problematics linked to the drug research. This is what this thesis is all about, as an interface gathered under the banner of chimocomputing. Though, new on a human scale, these domains are nevertheless, already an integral part of the drugs and medicines research. As the Biocomputing, his fundamental pillar remains storage, representation, management and the exploitation through computing of chemistry data. Chimocomputing is now mostly used in the upstream phases of drug research. Combining methods from various fields ( chime, computing, maths, apprenticeship, statistics, etc…) allows the implantation of computing tools adapted to the specific problematics and data of chime such as chemical database storage, understructure research, data visualisation or physoco-chimecals and biologics properties prediction. In that multidisciplinary frame, the work done in this thesis pointed out two important aspects, both related to chimocomputing : (1) The new methods development allowing to ease the visualization, analysis and interpretation of data related to set of the molecules, currently known as chimocomputing and (2) the computing tools development enabling the implantation of these methods

Abstract:
What do we do with the suburban shopping centers when the world is modernizing and physical stores are reducing? How can we develop the already existing structures, what other kind of functions could we add that would be more relevant today? With this project, I wanted to explore how different types of public spaces and functions in a suburban center facility can work together, and give rise to a greater sense of security and the creation of new meeting places. The site for the project is Sätra, located southwest of Stockholm's inner city. Sätra was built during the 1960s with Sätra centrum as a city center with all services gathered in a single building, built over the metro tracks and built together with the metro station building. Due to the center's problematic placement and lack of quality, renewal of Sätra centrum has been discussed several times over the years. In the current proposal from the City of Stockholm, it is proposed that the existing center facility will be demolished and replaced by a public outdoor square, surrounded by four blocks with about 600 apartments and premises in the ground floors, which this project questions. The project proposes an alternative planning of the area and my idea has been to focus on creating meeting places where people can meet in different ways and at the same time feel safe. I wanted the architecture and the program to allow breaks and offer places for people to wait, stop and meet. The goal has been to give the people of Sätra reasons to spend time in the new city center, not just pass by it on their way to the metro.

Abstract:

This thesis explores the energy-delay space of eight widely referred flip-flops in a 0.13µm CMOS technology. The main goal has been to find the smallest set of flip-flop topologies to be included in a “high performance” flip-flop cell library covering a wide range of power-performance targets. Based on the comparison results, transmission gate-based flip-flops show the best powerperformance trade-offs with a total delay (clock-to-output + setup time) down to 105ps. For higher performance, the pulse-triggered flip-flops are the fastest (80ps) alternatives suitable to be included in a flip-flop cell library. However, pulse-triggered flip-flops consume significantly larger power (about 2.5x) compared to other fast but fully dynamic flip-flops such as TSPC and dynamic TG-based flip-flops.

Abstract:
Area of interest is located next to the ring road of Brno and between Koliště, Cejl, Vlhká and Křenová streets. Main prerequisites for the design were moving of the railway station to the „Južné centrum“ and at the same time keeping the original path of the viaduct running through the area. This allows to change the function and create a pedestrian and cycling path . It was necessary to create a new profile of the ring road, 30 m wide, and keep the character of the street by using adequate scale to the buildings. According to these conditions, office buildings from 6 to 8 storeys high with comercial use in the ground floor were designed to increase the atractivness of the promenade. The block of office buildings is integrated with a Visual arts centre, which is located at the connection of viaduct and the ring road and closes the block structure. Mass of the object decreases from the ring road to create a system of terraces available from interior, and public spaces available from the ground level and viaduct. Creating a public space on viaduct allowes us to connect the building with it. Decreasing of the mass and two level public spaces divides the object to two wings. The first wing includes the Visual arts center itself, with its exhibiton spaces, library and management and the other wing hosts offices and studios for young artists.

Law, Peter Z. "Traveling Theater." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/31774.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis proposes that architecture has the potential to organize experience through its sensory effects and that the body is the fundamental link between experience and the imagination. The project in this thesis is a traveling theater. It was inspired by an interest in the intersection between architecture and contemporary theater. The theater borrows elements from traditional theaters and street theater in an effort to establish a separation between actor and spectator while also encouraging exploration of that basic theatrical relationship. There were three fundamental moves in the theater: the cubic volume; the siting and decision to travel; and the separation of the structure and skin. Each of these was a starting point for sensory effects explored in the theater.

Abstract:

The environment in which higher education institutions are situated has been impacted by a number of disruptive forces since the early 1990s, including acceleration in the capability of information technology (Beagle, 2006; Bennett, 2003; Foster, 2014), changing attitudes about learning pedagogy (Barr & Tagg, 1995), and calls for accountability from government and the public (Appleton, Stevenson, & Boden, 2011; Forrest & Bostick, 2013). Innovative leaders in academic librarianship have been empowered by their institutions to lead efforts to create transformative library learning spaces that can effectively leverage the opportunities presented through these disruptions to aid the institution in meeting its goals, now and in the future.

The theoretical framework for this study was grounded in planned (Lewin, 1951) and emergent change (Bess & Dee, 2012; Burnes, 2004, Leslie, 1996) theories, which are both needed to foster sustainable and transformative outcomes (Mossop, 2013). The following research question guided this study:

How do organizational leaders experience engagement with stakeholders during the creation of library learning spaces, from visioning through planning, implementation and evaluation?

This basic, interpretive, qualitative study employed individual, semi-structured interviews with (N=11) library leaders who possessed primary responsibility for leading others to facilitate creation of library learning spaces at their institution. Projects serving as subjects for the study were completed between 2011 and 2016. Leader subjects were identified through intentional and emergent sampling. Themes were inductively identified through open and axial coding methods (Merriam & Tisdell, 2016). Artifacts related to the library space projects were analyzed to corroborate findings. Elite interviews with (N2) professionals from varied backgrounds who have expert knowledge on library learning space design were implemented to integrate additional perspectives into findings.

Five principal findings were identified that framed the process of leadership engagement through a library space project: 1) Input: Leadership Characteristics & Project Ignition; 2) Project Drivers: Institutional Authority, Mission, & Needs; 3) Building on Relational Capital; 4) Persistence through Planned Change; and 5) Maintaining Sustainable Spaces. This study may contribute a greater understanding of leadership requirements for library space design projects, as well as identify activities associated with project success.

Wessel, Emily. "Oakland Media Library: Urban Communication Space." Thesis, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/3400.

Full text
Abstract:
As North American cities experience rapid changes in demographics, communication technology, and economy, how will urban libraries continue to hold meaning and usefulness to their publics? Investigating the position of the municipal public library in the multicultural city, the thesis focuses on how this civic institution can be a social gathering place and a venue that supports multiple forms of communication and cultural contestation. Oakland, California is the site for an exploration of these concepts and their application in a design proposal. Oakland is a diverse and segregated city which is currently undergoing a new wave of development. The city’s history reveals how the formation of urban communities has often been intimately connected with the uses and transformations of public space. The history also illustrates the ways that public life has been performed within and defined by the public spaces of the city. An investigation of the Library’s story and myths highlights the gap between the institution’s utopian self-conception and its less than egalitarian history. To develop new visions for the municipal library, theories about public space and urban life are considered in light of changing technologies and communication methods currently affecting the public realm. The juxtaposition of these concepts suggests that in order to improve the popularity and relevance of the Library, an expansion and diversification of its urban, social and practical functions is necessary. The design proposal for the Oakland Media Library integrates this broadened idea of the Library into the city fabric, and renews the Library’s meaning and usefulness by conceiving it as an urban communication space.

There are several new universities have to built libraries. Architects and Director of library will map out the dimension of library together at first in recent years, then write out the planning reporter. Department for Education will audit it. However the number of teachers, students, mount of books of each library are different.Department for Education have no standard of audit until now. Besides, many domestic notional universities address for annexing or reconstruction of old library to Department for Education, so set up a apropos standard of audit for Department for Education will be necessary. This study is an investigation of appropriate space of domestic notional university library. By realizing user’s purpose and library functions, this study devotes to propose reasonable rules for the spatial planning of libraries. The unity formulation can be analyzed by calculating the existent space allocation of each university, including the space for book collection, administration, reading, and public. Besides, Considering of different using times of each library, the number of entrants and book lending are collected for counting the using average and frequency.. The library which has higher frequency of use will have more area for new library as reward. There are some new libraries have more space then necessary, and some libraries of universities of science and technology don’t have enough space. By studying the data I collected, I provide some suggestion of spatial planning for several university libraries and which will be build in the future. I hope to set up a standard of spatial planning for university libraries.
