Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Paratexts in the context of children’s and young adult literature (CYAL) are often purely decorative, however, in the world of picturebooks it is increasingly common to introduce illustrated elements, which often contribute to the visual narrative and thus a reader’s construction of meaning. It's increasingly more frequent, even in an illustrated book to see paratexts (such as the covers / back covers, endpapers, title pages) being used beyond simple beautification, as a conscious result of the illustrator contribution.Recognizing that all parts of an illustrated book deserve special dedication, the focus of this article is the title page, paratextual element that had not been examined in depth in a graphical point of view or deserved studies deepening their communicative importance. As part of a broader study, this article shares results from the qualitative analysis of a corpus containing books distinguished with the highest prize, special mentions and recommendations from the jury of the Portuguese National Illustration Prize, between 2000 and 2009.Title pages were confirmed as semantic vehicles, advancing information related to characters' features, with the clarification of the theme or the anticipation of narrative development, among others.

Abstract:
EN Gender equality in language learning has received considerable attention in research on classroom policy and materials. Within studies of materials like language learning texts, most research focuses on content analyses of character roles and images, with sometimes purposeful exclusion of non-human characters. However, non-humans in children’s picture books comprise almost 60% of the characters children read. Therefore, their representations of gender, including biases, overt sexism, and covert sexism should be examined. In this study, I examine gendering of non-human characters using corpus linguistics and critical discourse analysis. Additionally, I use critical image analysis to discuss pictorial gendering of non-human characters within 12 textbooks in two of the United States’ most widely used textbook series for language learning in elementary schools. Results indicate a strong preference for aggressive and adventurous male characters, male supremacist ideologies, and the suppression of female agency. Odilon Moraes. INFERENTIAL STRATEGY TO READ ILLUSTRATED BOOKS Abstract: Generally, reading images in illustrated books is still related to the primacy of the word and to the ways of reading in a set of interdependencies between the written text and the images. To verify the construction of meanings derived from this relation, an analysis of Carolyna Moreyra's book, Lá e aqui (2015), illustrated by Odilon Moraes, was carried out. From the graphic and narrative spaces, a reading proposal, which includes the use of strategies focused on inferences, was made. Plastic elements which are arranged in the graphic design and the composition of the dialogue between text and image were also checked. These aspects were considered through the guidelines of Oliveira (2008), which sets a first structural reading as the methodological starting point to read images. Girotto and Souza (2011) was the basis for the study of the application of inference; assumptions inserted in the practice of reading words and in the transposition of concepts to read children's book illustrations were also used. Abstract:
Abstract The book “Iconografia Selecta da Flora Portuguesa”, by Gonçalo Sampaio (botanist) and Sara Cabral Ferreira (illustrator), was first published in 1949. Containing one hundred and fifty prints of Portuguese flora species, this book stood out in the national botanical literature, although it was a posthumous and incomplete edition. The original book drawings, made in a monotonic technique, are part of the scientific illustration collection of the Museum of Natural History and Science of the University of Porto (MHNC- UP). Since no text, besides preface and the scientific names of the plants, accompanies the images in the book, the reasons which supported the selection of the species to be illustrated, as well as their botanical relevance, remained unknown. In this article, we attempted to reconstruct the history of this iconography, based on the analysis of epistolary documents and manuscripts. We also focus on the importance of scientific illustration and on its usage as a tool for the visual representation of botanical species and for science communication. Therefore, we analyzed the methodology used both in the typology of the archetype as in the execution techniques, as well as the restrictions that led to those options. By analyzing these botanical drawings of the first half of the twentieth century, it was also sought to explore the relevance of these iconographies in earlier and modern botanical studies, as well as their potential as instruments of diffusion of science. Abstract:
LIBOR is the London Interbank Offered Rate: a measure of the interest rate at which large banks can borrow from one another on an unsecured basis. LIBOR is often used as a benchmark rate— meaning that the interest rates that consumers and businesses pay on trillions of dollars in loans adjust up and down contractually based on movements in LIBOR. Investors also rely on the difference between LIBOR and various risk-free interest rates as a gauge of stress in the banking system. Benchmarks such as LIBOR therefore play a central role in modern financial markets. Thus, news reports in 2008 revealing widespread manipulation of LIBOR threatened the integrity of this benchmark and lowered trust in financial markets. We begin with a discussion of the economic role of benchmarks in reducing market frictions. We explain how manipulation occurs in practice, and illustrate how benchmark definitions and fixing methods can mitigate manipulation. We then turn to an overall policy approach for reducing the susceptibility of LIBOR to manipulation before focusing on the practical problem of how to make an orderly transition to alternative reference rates without raising undue legal risks.

Abstract:
Abstract Research depends on prior results. The cycle of transforming research output to disseminated knowledge is changing to engage more researchers to openly discover and thereby shape future contributions to scholarship. No established framework helps librarians understand the opportunities that transition offers librarians. However, through four propositions, this paper addresses some of the changes facing academic librarians as they expand their roles: 1) Research cycles embrace interactive sharing and reuse of data; 2) Managing open research data expands librarians’ roles; 3) Intellectual entrepreneurship roles provide a model to empower others; 4) Librarians demonstrate their entrepreneurial leadership by creating partnerships outside the library. Now academic librarians have opportunities to strengthen their role in how higher education shapes research by shifting greater focus toward research data management [RDM]. Two seasoned administrators and librarians illustrate pathways to prepare academic librarians for these new roles. They offer two practitioners’ impressions of the demands and opportunities for librarians to extend their expertise to support RDM, and illustrate how academic librarians have begun doing so through professional association work (through the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL)) and at one academic library (at Drexel University). They urge academic librarians to step out of their comfort zones of organizing, preserving and servicing discovery of information resources and embrace emerging roles for which their values and expertise have prepared them. If librarians ignore these opportunities, they risk being bypassed in efforts to ensure that managing research data and scholarship are central to research protocols.

Abstract:
After the dawn of the August 2007 financial crisis, banks became more aware of financial risk leading to the appearance of nonnegligible spreads between LIBOR and OIS rates and also between LIBOR of different tenors. This consequently led to the birth of multicurve models. This study establishes a new model; the multicurve cross-currency LIBOR market model (MCCCLMM). The model extends the initial LIBOR Market Model (LMM) from the single-curve cross-currency economy into the multicurve cross-currency economy. The model incorporates both the risk-free OIS rates and the risky forward LIBOR rates of two different currencies. The established model is suitable for pricing different quanto interest rate derivatives. A brief illustration is given on the application of the MCCCLMM on pricing quanto caplets and quanto floorlets using a Black-like formula derived from the MCCCLMM.

Abstract:
Abstract Cryptocurrencies have left the dark side of the finance universe and become an object of study for asset and portfolio management. Since they have low liquidity compared to traditional assets, one needs to take into account liquidity issues when adding them to a portfolio. We propose a Liquidity Bounded Risk-return Optimization (LIBRO) approach, which is a combination of risk-return portfolio optimization under liquidity constraints. Cryptocurrencies are included in portfolios formed with stocks of the S&P 100, US Bonds, and commodities. We illustrate the importance of the liquidity constraints in an in-sample and out-of-sample study. LIBRO improves the weight optimization in the sense that it only adds cryptocurrencies in tradable amounts depending on the intended investment amount. The returns greatly increase compared to portfolios consisting only of traditional assets. We show that including cryptocurrencies in a portfolio can indeed improve its risk–return trade-off.

In Italy the current legislative framework foresees the transition to the electronic textbook in schools and identifies teachers as the main subjects involved in the self-production and evaluation of these digital teaching materials. This paper describes the design, development and evaluation of a digital, multimedia and interactive textbook prototype, in an attempt to investigate the main critical issues raised by its implementation and the possible elements of innovation compared to the traditional textbook. In addition, it provides guidelines for teachers who are increasingly responsible for the writing and validation of these new types of texts. To assess the cognitive-didactic usability of the prototype, a questionnaire was given to a panel of experts. The first part of the paper describes the outcomes of the literature review carried out in order to draw effective design principles; the second part illustrates the prototype development and the procedure adopted to collect and analyze data. The results are then discussed and finally some conclusions are drawn.

Abstract:
This essay explores the organisational character of Facebook’s Libra currency by undertaking a critical reading of documents published by the Libra Association. Drawing on the conceptual work of Marilyn Strathern and Michel Serres, it illustrates how ownership cuts the network and encourages parasitism as a means of driving future profit. Central to this is the claim that Libra is not an exercise in democratising money, but rather, the opposite: Libra is run as a club, for the benefit of club members. The conceptual theme of 'cutting' is used to organise the argument. Rather than a cutting-edge technology, Libra’s true innovation is organisational and consists in overturning the decentralised character of blockchain, such that distributed ledger technology is re-centralised by big tech firms. Outsiders are thus cut-off from Libra; only those inside the club have the right to participate in Libra and its governance. This position also affords members an exclusive capacity to take a cut of the profits generated through Libra. As a private organisation, members have sole rights to future profits generated from the Libra ecosystem and are in this way incentivised to create new product opportunities over time.

Abstract:
We present a conceptual approach of deriving parsimonious correlation structures suitable for implementation in the LIBOR market model. By imposing additional constraints on a known ratio correlation structure, motivated by economically sensible assumptions concerning forward LIBOR correlations, we yield a semi-parametric framework of non-degenerate correlation structures with realistic properties. Within this framework we derive systematically low parametric structures with, in principal, any desired number of parameters. As illustrated, such structures may be used for smoothing a matrix of historically estimated LIBOR return correlations. In combination with a suitably parametrized deterministic LIBOR volatility norm we so obtain a parsimonious multi-factor market model which allows for joint calibration to caps and swaptions. See Schoenmakers [14] for a stable full implied calibration procedure based on the correlation structures developed in this paper.

Abstract:
Abstract Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have trained Black librarians and strengthened the library profession since 1927 when the first HBCU-based library school was founded at Hampton University. However, HBCU professors, library directors, and alumni are often overlooked in conversations on librarian professionalization. In this article, four distinguished HBCU-affiliated library leaders provide critical perspectives on LIS practice. Their collective insight illustrates the value of HBCUs in LIS and demonstrates opportunities for new directions.

Abstract:
Asiago-born writer Mario Rigoni Stern, whose centenary of birth was celebrated in 2021, always took a great interest in young people, as amply demonstrated by his numerous talks at schools, where he often addressed ecological problems afflicting the Earth. His Il libro degli animali (1992), a collection of children’s stories illustrated by Xavier de Maistre, characteristically engages with environmental themes by expressing respect for the animal world and admiration for its beauty. Similar to ecological literature for children, Rigoni Stern’s book aims to highlight environmental problems and suggest possible solutions to them. Given this, it is dedicated to inspiring young readers to adopt an alternative way of life, one based on respect for nature and responsible/sustainable practices. This effort is combined with promoting symbiosis with land, as communion with nature is the only viable solution to many of the contemporary ecological problems. Employing ecocritical theories, mostly those related to environmentalism, this paper explores the way in which Rigoni Stern presents his standpoint on and ideas of the natural world to the young reading public. His approach makes Il libro degli animali part of the most complex ecological discourse that he developed in his long literary career.

Abstract:

1988), I tre cosmonauti (1966, rev.

Abstract:
While the anonymous Viaggio da Venetia al Sancto Sepolchro et al Monte Sinai, first published in Venice in 1518, was the most popular Holy Land guidebook in Renaissance Italy, the historical origins of the book have never been fully understood. From four illustrated versions of an earlier manuscript guide, the Libro d’Oltramare (1346–50), one can hypothesize about both the text and its author. The ultimate prototype for the Viaggio da Venetia was very likely one or more of these illustrated manuscripts, and the original author of both the text and illustrations was the Franciscan pilgrim Niccolò da Poggibonsi. Despite the eventual erosion of his name from the printed versions of the guidebook, the assertiveness and originality of the author parallels the production of other vernacular literature in mid-fourteenth-century Italy. Unlike Latin guidebooks of previous centuries, the intent to include illustrations that re-create the pilgrimage experience and the unprecedented descriptiveness of the prose together suggest that the book can be considered the foundational text for the genre of the illustrated pilgrimage guidebook.

Therefore, the paper illustrates both the Catalan and the Occitan textual traditions and compares the results of my critical edition of the <em>Libre de vicis et vertutz</em> with Wittlin’s study (1983) on the Catalan text. Abstract Gregory of Tours’s oeuvre is one of the few testimonies of the Merovingian Early Middle Ages. The paper illustrates that the experience of contingency and the attempt to overcome it during a time of civil war were the situation in which the ‚Libri historiarum decem‘ originated. Among other things, this becomes apparent in the composition of the ten books. Furthermore, the Merovingian kingship is a recurring motive of the text. The paper illustrates how genealogy, which can be used to conceal disruptions and discontinuities, was instrumentalized to serve as legitimation.

This paper presents the design of a solar/gas driving double effect LiBr-H2O absorption system. In order to use solar energy more efficiently, a new kind of solar/gas driving double effect LiBr-H2O absorption system is designed. In this system, the high-pressure generator is driven by conventional energy, natural gas, and solar energy together with water vapor generated in the high-pressure generator, which supplies energy to the low-pressure generator for a double effect absorption system. Simulation results illustrate that this kind of system is feasible and economical. Economic evaluation of several systems is also given in this paper in order to get a clear knowledge of the energy consumption of the system.

<p><em>From a cross-disciplinary social science perspective, it is evident that financial and economic development is not a matter simply of a proper social structure (e.g., </em><em>Laissez-faire</em><em> free-market) but also requires good individual leadership (competence and honesty). Financial systems require both structure and leadership, despite some economic scholars holding to the idea of an economic structural mechanism of a ‘perfect market’. However, good leadership and proper societal structure together is not a simple process, nor certainly obtained, as empirically there are no societal ‘mechanisms’. A case, such as Libor, clearly illustrated the importance of both structure and leadership in the proper operation of societal systems. Bad leadership can corrupt a societal structure; and a corrupt societal structure can enable bad leadership. The case of Libor provides empirical evidence for the social science proposition that a financial system requires both proper government regulation and integrity in private sector operations. But this is not easily achieved in societies of self-organizing systems. We apply a cross-disciplinary framework of systems dynamics to analyze the Libor event, as a kind of challenge in the control of self-organizing societies, which are facilitated by information technology processes</em><em>.</em></p>

Abstract:
We develop an expansion approach for the pricing of European quanto options written on LIBOR rates (of a foreign currency). We derive the dynamics of the system of foreign LIBOR rates under the domestic forward measure and then consider the price of the quanto option. In order to take the skew/smile effect observed in fixed income and FX markets into account, we consider local volatility models for both the LIBOR and the FX rate. Because of the structure of the local volatility function, a closed form solution for quanto option prices does not exist. Using expansions around a proxy related to log-normal dynamics, we derive approximation formulas of Black–Scholes type for the price, that have the benefit of giving very rapid numerical procedures. Our expansion formulas have the major advantage that they allow for an accurate estimation of the error, using Malliavin calculus, which is directly related to the maturity of the option, the payoff, and the level and curvature of the local volatility function. These expansions also illustrate the impact of the quanto drift adjustment, while the numerical experiments show an excellent accuracy.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The Imago Primi Saeculi Societatis Iesv (1640) is, perhaps, the most beautiful book of emblems published by the Jesuits in the seventeenth century. The book is a festive commemoration offered by the priests and students of the Flemish-Belgian Province in celebration of the centenary of the founding of the Society of Jesus. The work includes 127 full-page emblems distributed throughout a total of 956 folio-sized pages that narrate and illustrate in emblematic fashion the foundation, development, vicisstitudes and achievements of the Socirty in its evangelical and pedagogical mission. From the moment of its publication, the Imago was the object of attacks by Huguenauts and Jansenists who criticized its haughtiness, grandiloquent language and the hyperbolic comparisons of the narration. Hidden behind this criticism were the reasons for the Jansenist offensive against the book. Probabilism, the supposed frivolous attitude towards confession and the frequency of communion, advocated by the Jesuits, was the object of a pair of insulting treatises directed against the Imago by the famous Jansenists Antoine Arnauld and Issac Louis le Maître de Sacy. The critics of the Imago maliciously ignored that the book's grandiloquent style, appropriate to a jubilation celebration, conforms to the language of classical rhetoric, thus perpetuating the propagandistic image of the book. KEYWORDS: Imago Primi Saeculi; Society of Jesus; Flanders; Flemish-Belgian Province.

Abstract:
Multimodalidade. Projeto gráfico. GRAPHIC ELEMENTS INFLUENCE IN BOOKS FOR CHILDREN IN THE CONTEMPORANEITY: ANALYSIS OF TWO WORKS FROM THE CHILDREN'S UNIVERSITY COLLECTION Abstract: Books for children are said to be an artistic-cultural object made up of several modes of languages. Thus, this paper departs from the assumptions of cultural semiotics, more specifically the theories about multimodality, and tries to identify both the discursive and educational aspects of works aimed at children published in contemporary times. Studies on illustration and graphic design of books for children, such as Nikolajeva and Scott (2011), van der Linden (2011), Ramos (2013) and Paiva (2018) are also used. This paper focuses specifically on the analysis of two books from Universidade da Criança [Children's University] collection, published by the label Estraladabão, by Federal University of Minas Gerais Press, in 2018: O que existe? O que não existe? (COSCARELLI, 2018) and O que é um livro? (RIBEIRO, 2018). Other professionals involved in the creation of the books are identified along this paper. Nowadays, books for children can be considered as an object of multiple authorship: besides the writer and the illustrator, the main authors or protagonists, as called in this paper, there are also other professionals, who were called secondary or coadjuvants authors, such as graphic designers, editors and specialized editorial coordinators, critical readers, content and language reviewers, and often also other editorial and educational specialists, such as advertisers, paper engineers, translators, adapters, psychologists, pedagogists and psychopedagogists. Some elements of the graphic design of the selected works and the relation between written text, illustration and design were analyzed in the following order: 1- Cover and fourth cover; 2- Format of the book and other elements of materiality; 3- Layout: how the written text and the visual are presented on the page, which includes a series of elements and relationships between them, such as: type and size of letter, space between lines and graphic spot (the area of the print: written text and illustration). It should be noted that the definition of this last element involves the relationship between written text and visual text. Finally, it is important to say that this paper is part of a collective research developed within the framework of the Group MULTDIC – Multiliteracies and digital information and communication technologies, entitled Literatura e visualidade: a importância do projeto gráfico em livros para crianças na contemporaneidade [Literature and visuality: the importance of the graphic design in books for children in contemporaneity]. Abstract:
Abstract Édouard Dujardin's novel Les Lauriers sont coupés (1887) has long been acknowledged as an important influence on the stream of consciousness style (called monologue intérieur by Dujardin) found in James Joyce's Ulysses. Dujardin wrote the book during the period he edited the short-lived Revue wagnérienne. The study shows how monologue intérieur was connected to experimental literary trends debated on the pages of the Revue as well as in the Symbolist movement more generally. Two of these trends were vers libre and the construct of an interiorized mental theater, and both were grounded in particular perceptions of Wagnerian opera. Dujardin and his Symbolist colleagues appreciated Wagner's move to abstraction, but thought he had not gone far enough. The article illustrates how putative syntactical freedoms in Wagner's work encouraged vers libre, how a song cycle Dujardin composed to his own vers libre tested the boundaries between literature and music against a Wagnerian backcloth, and how a “paraphrase” of the Amfortas monologue in the first act of Parsifal published in the Revue produced a theater of the mind. The invention of monologue intérieur emerges as a rich and multivalent point of intersection between Wagnerian opera and modernity.

Abstract:
This article approaches the study of the private library of the Murcian land surveyor Francisco Falcón de los Reyes, from the first half of the eighteenth century, which constitutes a clear example of the relationship between education and written culture. From the data extracted from a postmortem inventory and the subsequent appraisal and partition of goods among the heirs, we carried out a quantitative and qualitative analysis of said library. First, the text provides a biographical profile of this geometer, a descendant of slaves (new Christians), and describes the formative precariousness of these professionals in their time. The quantitative analysis of the bibliographic collection and its comparison with other private collections from similar socioeconomic fields indicate the importance of this particular collection. The qualitative study of authors and titles shows, on one hand, the high degree of mathematical training of the subject, who is shown to be a recipient of the fundamentally Valencian pre-illustrated reformist scientific mainstream, and, on the other hand, the purpose with which those books were incorporated into the funds of the collection. Together with the library, which we could call professional, due to its scientific nature, the inventoried religious matter in the form of printed documents makes up another interesting part of the collection, one of a catechetical nature in its various formative levels

Abstract:
While the idea of global free movement of people is discussed merely in normative terms, it has become a concrete policy goal in different world regions. The article aims to assess the prospects of regional free movement by discussing its theoretical and practical implications, with a specific focus on African sub-regional organizations. This is achieved by outlining the meaning, rights, and rationale of the free movement of people and by situating the regional level within the overall context of international migration governance. The eight African Regional Economic Communities serve as a practical illustration on how the goal of free movement is translated (or not) into concrete policies.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract: Historically, the Renaissance marks a transformation in wfiich the elite classes come to define themselves by their aesthetic refinement, taste, and good manners. Accompanying this change is a special vision of the human body which is distinguished from that of artisans and peasants. This opposition has been described by Bakhtin as one between the classical body and the grotesque one, and it appears in the most unportant book for the Renaissance redefinition of the upper classes, Castiglione's II libro del cortegiano. Castiglione's view of the body actually derives from the rhetorical tradition of antiquity, in particular from Quintilian and Cicero's De oratore. A similar view appears in the works of Renaissance rhetoricians and can usefully be illustrated by analysis of Thomas Wilson's The Arte of Rhetorique (1553), although the latter also retains a vision of the grotesque body as a result of the ambiguous social position of its author.
