AbstractWhen the Beechey brothers sailed to Tripoli in 1821 in HMS Adventure to begin their survey work along the coast of Libya, a young midshipman, William Robinson, was aboard on his first voyage. He sent home letters describing shipboard life and the Libyan coast as he saw it, reportedly strewn with wrecks, Tripoli and the castle, the ‘Basha’ and Colonel Warrington, Leptis Magna and the ruins which he sketched, Benghazi where the sea had recently eroded the land, leaving Berenice ‘open to view’, Bomba, Derna and the Gulf of Syrtis, the desertification and the wildlife.

Abstract:
The paper presents a study of a thermal assessment of an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) energized by heat absorbed from a parabolic trough collector (PTC) located in Derna, Libya. Both the ORC and PTC are modeled using the IPSEpro software. The simulation results are used to evaluate the system performance using energy and exergy analysis. The study showed the PTC collector was the main contributor of the energy and exergy losses within the PTC system and the evaporator within in the ORC. At this specific weather conditions, the ORC was able to produce about 3 MW electrical powers from the powered PTC heat. Moreover, exergy efficiency of the PTC was 47.7 %, the heat engine was 23.3 % and for the overall system (PTC and ORC) was 11.1 %.

Abstract:
Libya at the beginning of this century had little to offer the would-be imperialist and coloniser. The true value of Turkey's last remaining African possessions was not — despite the insistence of the Italian nationalist lobby — as a settler-colony or as a gateway to the largely illusory wealth of central Africa, but as a strategic base on the central Mediterranean. The general poverty of Ottoman Tripolitania and Cyrenaica was reflected indeed in the poverty of the literature in any language on contemporary Libya. But growing Italian interest in these territories, by 1900 almost the last parts of Africa unclaimed by any European power, generated a series of books and articles by an imperialist-nationalist lobby eager to prove the case that Italy's political, strategic, economic and social wellbeing depended on the immediate possession of Turkish North Africa. Such writings naturally generated a rather less voluminous counter-flow of material, mainly from socialist sources, putting the opposite and (as events were to prove) essentially more realistic case. The outbreak of the Italo-Turkish war in September 1911 and the subsequent Italian occupation of bridgeheads at Tripoli, Horns, Benghazi, Derna and Tobruk first brought Libya to the notice of the international press. The British correspondents who reported one or other side of the conflict subsequently produced a number of surprisingly partisan books about the war and their own adventures in it, but had very much less to say about the little-understood country and its people. With the sudden end of the war in 1912 and the outbreak of more serious fighting in the Balkans, interest in Libya quickly waned. For the next 30 years nearly all the relevant literature was to be provided by Italians, in Italian and written from a purely Italian point of view — some of it later to be destroyed in the antifascist and anti-imperialist reaction from 1943 onwards.

AbstractThomas Ashby was a very well-known British archaeologist of the beginning of last century. He travelled a lot and left to the British School at Rome, of which he was the first student, many albums of photographs. Some of them have been recently published. This article deals with the trip to Libya by sea made in May 1910. He took photographs of Derna, Benghazi and Tripoli with general views of them. Of course, the panorama is now changed, but it is interesting to note some features which are nowadays lost, like the Turkish castle at Benghazi, or the arch of Marcus Aurelius at Tripoli still obstructed by later buildings, or the ‘modern’ technology of the radio masts at Derna.

Abstract:
The surface wind field are formed by the interaction of general circulation mechanisms with the local physical, geographical and climatic characteristics of the region. The success of the implementation of the different weather models is based on the representativeness of the initial information. The paper presents the results of comparing meteorological data, such as the average monthly speed and direction of the surface wind, from the NCEP / NCAR reanalysis archive with data of surface weather observations for the period from 2015 to 2019. Considering the difficulty of obtaining data, the absence of continuous observations at many meteorological stations in Libya, it was decided to analyze the most complete series of observations for the last period and compare it with the model data of reanalysis. Meteorological stations are located in different geographic regions of Libya (Derna, Zuara, Efren, Misurata, Godames, Jagbub, El-Kufra and Ghat). Based on the monthly average values of the surface wind velocity components for past five years, was done a study of the intrannual structure of the wind field over the territory of Libya and maps of the wind field for this period were constructed. The obtained results of comparison of the NCEP / NCAR reanalysis data with Surface weather observations showed a relatively good agreement between the observed and calculated wind. Noted that the wind, according to NCEP data, is some weaker than observed at the stations. The main reasons for this are the complexity and diversity of the topography around the stations, as well as the representativeness between gridded data and meteorological measurements. Analysis of the distribution of the average monthly wind speed over the territory of Libya indicates a tendency for an increase in the surface wind speed from the southwest to the northeast, both as according to the NCEP / NCAR reanalysis data, where the average wind speed doesn’t exceed 4.7 m/s, and according to actual observations 6.7 m/s.

Abstract:
The impacts of COVID-19 pandemic are expected to be challenging on all countries worldwide, especially from an economic concept. Reformations in the world’s economic system and changes in human precautions and behaviors are expected to influence several other aspects directly and indirectly. This paper aims to evaluate the impact of the pandemic on the behaviors and perceptions of shopping malls’ users. Through the performed questionnaire on the residents of Dernah, Libya, it was found that they depend on cars as a main mean of transportation. Thus, no major impacts were found on the user’s choices in that aspect. However, evaluations of the scale reflect changes of people’s attitudes towards their preferences for shopping malls. These results are significant indicators in directing the attention of designers and managers of shopping malls to adopt new strategies and approaches.

Abstract:
The 2013-2014 liquidity crisis in Libya has resulted in many Libyans' difficulties accessing their banking accounts and managing their financial standing. In place of this, many commercial banks have developed new mobile payment techniques, particularly the 'MobiCash' Service offered by Wahda Bank to assist Libyan customers in accessing their accounts and carrying out their financial transactions. This paper intends to examine the effect of lifestyle changes on mobile banking services or 'MobiCash' and their awareness of this novel service. Also, this study investigates the more profound understanding of Libyan customers. It highlights customers' socio-economic characteristics using 'MobiCash' services offered by Wahda Bank in the city of Derna in Libya. The questionnaires were distributed online, and a sample of 149 was obtained. SPSS was used to analyse the data and regression analysis to test the significant effect of customers' lifestyles and their awareness of 'MobiCash'. The results showed that Libyan customers were accepting of this form of mobile banking. The findings indicated that age and academic degrees do not influence awareness of 'MobiCash'. However, customer lifestyles affect awareness of the banking service of 'MobiCash'. Socio-Economic factors do not mediate the relationship between lifestyle and awareness of banking services of 'MobiCash'. This study's outcomes have increased the current knowledge on the behaviours and awareness of novel banking service features like 'MobiCash'. Moreover, the study may provide a more in-depth understanding of what is needed for Libyan banking customers to accept further this technological service and, thus, permit the improvement of banking strategies to attract potential users. Future researchers can extend the understanding of this study in other contexts and service environment.

Abstract:
The present study has been carried out to analyze the relationship between faulting and geomorphology of the Wadi Atyaruh to reveal the effect of structures on the morphology and distribution of the different karst features. Geographical Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) techniques were applied to investigate morphological and topographic characteristics of Wadi Atyaruh, based on ASTER Global Digital Elevation Model (ASTER GDEM) Version 3 (V3) data. Dextral strike-slip fault is the main faulting type in the valley. Conjugate faults system has been found in the study area, which reveals the orientations of the principal stresses. Wadi Atyaruh consists mainly of Dernah formations (Eocene) and Quaternary deposits. Two types of Karren have been recognized, they are Rillen karren and solution basis which are well distributed in Darnah formation. Caves are found in the Darnah formation, the passages and chambers of these caves show a phreatic bedding plane, elliptical shape, laminar profiles, and rectangular and rounded top vadose profiles. The drainage system of this valley is sub-parallel drainage pattern to dendritic drainage pattern, indicating that the area has affected by strike-slip movement (Dextral), joints and it has steep slopes. interpretation of DEM of study area indicate moderate and high relief, low run off and high infiltrations due to the nature of the fracture carbonate rock, the basin have early mature stage of erosion development. Geomorphic parameters such as hill shade, slop, aspect, area shaded and elevation maps, was produced to describe geomorphic forms and processes of the Wadi Atyaruh. The complete morphometric analysis of drainage basin indicates that the given area is having good groundwater prospect.

Abstract:
This paper looks at the challenges to the sustainable development of migrant and refugee children in Libyan refugee camps and migrant detention centres. Libya, next to Syria, is still the most destabilised Arab country with a myriad of conflicting parties, warlords, militias, terrorist organisations as well as smugglers and traffickers that continuously compete in a complex network of multidimensional power struggles. Our single case study based on ethnographic fieldwork adopts the human security approach, which provides security analysis with an inherently “sustainable” dimension. In the paper we provide an overview of the empirical study carried out in seven Libyan refugee camps (Tripoli, Tajoura, Sirte, Misrata, Benghazi, Derna and Tobruk) between 2013 and 2019. Our findings show that for refugee children even everyday activities pose a danger to health and life, and the many threats to their security encompass a broad spectrum from health to safety, from education to falling prey to bundlers from terrorist organisations and paramilitary militias. These issues, undoubtedly pertinent on the individual level of analysis, are further exacerbated by the underlying, conflict-induced factors and preclude a safe and secure environment.

Abstract:
Reference evapotranspiration ( ETo ) is a vital factor in water resources managing and planning. Various estimation methods have been developed for different climatic regions and according to the available data. Therefore, the reliability of such methods depends upon climatic conditions. The present investigation evaluates four temperature based methods: FAO Blaney-Criddle (BC), Turc, Jensen-Haise (JH) and Hargreaves (HG), and two radiation based methods: FAO-radiation (FAO-rad) and Priestley-Taylor (PT) in comparison with the FAO-PM method under arid conditions of Libya. In order to select the best ETo method, the percentage error of estimate ( PE ), the root mean square error ( RMSE ), and mean bias error ( MBE ) were calculated. The obtained ETo values (FAO-PM and the average of best-estimated monthly ETo ) were utilized to generate spatial distribution maps of ETo with the aid of Kriging technique. Statistical analysis of the obtained results revealed that, Turc equation fitted well for the northern part of the study area, which include Nalut, Zuara, Mosrata, Sirt, Shahat, Derna, Tubruk, Hon, Galo and Gagbub. While for southern zone, HG equation performed better for Opari and Tazirbu, BC equation for Kufra and Ghadames, FAO-Rad equation for Sebha; and JH equation for Ghat.

Abstract:
The current study is focused on the economic and financial assessments of solar and wind power potential for nine selected regions in Libya for the first time. As the existing meteorological data, including wind speed and global solar radiation, are extremely limited due to the civil war in the country, it was therefore decided to use the NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) database as a source of meteorological information to assess the wind and solar potential. The results showed that the country has huge solar energy potential compared to wind energy potential. Additionally, it is found that Al Kufrah is a suitable region for the future installation of the Photovoltaic (PV) power plant due to high annual solar radiation. Based on the actual wind speed analysis, Benghazi and Dernah are the best regions for large-scale wind farm installation in the future taking into account existing meteorological data limitations. The values of the wind power density in all regions are considerable and small-scale wind turbines can be used to generate electricity based on NASA average monthly wind data for 37 years (1982–2019). Moreover, this work aimed to evaluate the wind/PV systems technical and economically through RETScreen Expert (Version 6.0, CanmetENERGY Varennes Research Centre of Natural Resources Canada, Varennes, Canada). Focusing on the power supply crisis in the country, the potential of electricity production by 5 kW grid-connected residential/household rooftop PV in all regions is proposed and presented. Additionally, this paper evaluated a techno-economic analysis of the 50MW wind/PV system in suitable places. The performance of a 5 kW and 50 MW PV solar system with three PV technologies, namely mono-crystalline silicon, poly-crystalline silicon, and thin-film (CdTe), was also analyzed. The results demonstrated that the development of the wind/PV system in the selected regions is both technically and economically feasible. The outcomes of this study can help decision-makers in designing and installing PV power plants as an alternative source for the future.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Arnasbideetako infekzioek heriotza tasa altuak eragiten dituzte munduan, COVID-19 birusa izanik azken urteetako adibiderik argiena. Hala ere, ez da libre dabilen patogeno bakarra eta errebisio honetan Bordetella pertussis bakterio patogenoak eragindako kukutxeztulaz arituko gara. Kukutxeztula arnasbideen infekzio larri eta kutsakorra da, bertako jariakinekin edota listu tantekin kontaktua izatean transmititzen dena. Helduetan arrisku berezirik ez duten sintomak eragiten dituen arren (etengabeko eztul gertakariak, arnasteko zailtasuna edota sukarra, besteak beste), heriotza eragin dezake urtebetetik beherako haurretan batez ere. Kukutxeztula fase goiztiar batean gainditu ez duten gaixoek bigarren mailako pneumonia bezalako konplikazioak garatu ditzakete, hau izaten delarik kukutxeztulaz hiltzen diren gehienen arrazoi nagusia. Lehen txertoa garatu zenetik kontrolpean zegoela uste izan den arren, kalte handiak eragin ditu batez ere garapen bidean dauden herrialdeetan. Herrialde garatuetan ere badu bere inpaktua, eta 2011tik gaur arte Ipar Amerikan eta mendebaldeko Europan epidemia egoera zabaldu da. Errebisio honetan kukutxeztulari buruzko informazioaren eguneratze bat aurkezten da, B. pertussisek erabiltzen dituen hainbat mekanismo infekziosoetan arreta jarriz. Mekanismo hauen oinarri molekularra ulertzeak zeluletan gertatzen diren beste hainbat prozesuren ulerkeran, gaixotasunaren aurkako sendagai berrien garapenean edota biologia molekularreko tresna berrien garapenean lagundu dezake.
