Abstract:
Faced with a growing number of international opportunities, the Lienhard School of Nursing at Pace University adapted a business model to assess which opportunities to pursue. Employing a product portfolio matrix approach, the International Opportunities Assessment (IOA) Tool was developed to assess new international ventures using the parameters of Market Attractiveness and Institutional Resources. The tool was piloted on a study abroad nursing course featuring a trip to Iceland. The tool assisted in prioritizing program development for international opportunities. In this article, we will describe the development of this tool and, in order to demonstrate its use, we will provide an example of its application in the assessment of a study abroad course for nursing students at the Lienhard School of Nursing, Pace University.

Abstract:
An ultra high critical heat flux (CHF) was attempted using a highly subcooled liquid jet impinging on a small rectangular heated surface of length 5∼10mm and width 4 mm. Experiments were carried out at jet velocities of 5∼60m/s, a jet temperature of 20°C and system pressures of 0.1∼1.3MPa. The degree of subcooling was varied from 80 to 170 K with increasing system pressure. The general correlation for CHF is shown to be applicable for such a small heated surface under a certain range of conditions. The maximum CHF achieved in these experiments was 211.9 MW/m2, recorded at system pressure of 0.7 MPa, jet velocity of 35 m/s and jet subcooling of 151 K, and corresponds to 48% of the theoretical maximum heat flux proposed by Gambill and Lienhard.

Abstract:
The “Berenson” flat-plate transition-boiling experiment has been re-created with a reduced thermal resistance in the heater, and an improved access to those portions of the transition boiling regime that have a steep negative slope. Tests have been made in Freon-113, acetone, benzene, and n-pentane boiling on horizontal flat copper heaters that have been mirror-polished, “roughened,” or teflon-coated. The resulting data reproduce and clarify certain features observed by Berenson: the modest surface finish dependence of boiling burnout, and the influence of surface chemistry on both the minimum heat flux and the mode of transition boiling, for example. A rational scheme of correlation yields a prediction of the heat flux in what Witte and Lienhard previously identified as the “film-transition boiling” region. It is also shown how to calculate the heat flux at the boundary between the pure-film, and the film-transition, boiling regimes, as a function of the advancing contact angle.

Abstract:
The Xenopus oocyte has a distinguished history as an in vivo host for the deposition by microinjection of a variety of macromolecules including DNA (Colman, 1984), RNA (Soreq, 1985), proteins (Dingwall, Sharnick & Laskey, 1982) and polysaccharides (Paine, Moore & Horowitz, 1975). In these cases, the oocyte has simply either provided an efficient production system for a product encoded by an injected nucleic acid (Soreq, 1985; Krieg et al. 1984) or has been used to investigate mechanisms regulating RNA (De Robertis, Lienhard & Parison, 1982) and protein (Gurdon, 1970; Davey, Dimmock & Colman, 1985) targeting within a living cell. However, microinjection also provides a method for perturbing or simulating processes that occur normally within the oocyte, in order to understand their molecular nature and regulation. For example, Bienz & Gurdon (1982) during their investigations of heat-shock translational control in Xenopus oocytes, argued that the heat-shock genes encoding the 70 × l03Mr heat-shock protein (hsp 70) must be constitutively active in oocytes; this was in contrast to the behaviour of injected Drosophila hsp 70 genes in unstressed oocytes. Bienz (1984) was subsequently able to simulate the natural situation and confirm her prediction by cloning and then injecting the Xenopus hsp 70 gene into oocytes

Abstract:
The psocid genus Dorypteryx Aaron is a small group in the family Psyllipsocidae, comprising only three species until now. The first Dorypteryx species, D. pallida, was described from North America by Aaron (1883), and subsequently recorded in Europe by Dessart (1976). Smithers (1958) described Dolopteryx domestica from Zimbabwe as the only species in a new genus. However, this genus was later synonymized with Dorypteryx by Lienhard (1977), who re-defined Dorypteryx and redescribed the two known species. After that revision, a third species, D. longipennis, was described by Smithers (1991) from Australia on imported specimens. Despite the low species diversity of Dorypteryx, the geographical range of this genus is rather wide, from the West Palaearctic, Afrotropical, Australian, Nearctic, and Neotropical realms. However, until now Dorypteryx had not been found in the Oriental realm. In the present paper, the genus Dorypteryx is recorded from a domestic habitat in Yunnan Province, China. Based on the contribution by Li (2002), there are three genera and 14 species of Psyllipsocidae in China (Pseudopsyllipsocus Li, Psyllipsocus Selys-Longchamps, and Psocathropos Ribaga). This discovery of Dorypteryx represents the first record of this genus in China, and also in Asia and the Oriental realm. The types of the new species described below, all females, are preserved in alcohol and deposited in the Entomological Museum of China Agricultural University (CAU), Beijing. The terminology of the adult generally follows Smithers (1972).

Full text
Abstract:
In turbulent liquid jet impingement, a spray of droplets often breaks off of the liquid layer formed on the target. This splattering of liquid alters the efficiencies of jet impingement heat transfer processes and chemical containment safety devices, and leads to problems of aerosol formation in jet impingement cleaning processes. In this paper, we present a more complete study of splattering and improved correlations that extend and supersede our previous reports on this topic. We report experimental results on the amount of splattering for jets of water, isopropanol-water solutions, and soap-water mixtures. Jets were produced by straight tube nozzles of diameter 0.8–5.8 mm, with fully developed turbulent pipe-flow upstream of the nozzle exit. These experiments cover Weber numbers between 130-31,000, Reynolds numbers between 2700-98,000, and nozzle-to-target separations of 0.2 ≤ l/d ≤ 125. Splattering of up to 75 percent of the incoming jet liquid is observed. The results show that only the Weber number and l/d affect the fraction of jet liquid splattered. The presence of surfactants does not alter the splattering. A new correlation for the onset condition for splattering is given. In addition, we establish the range of applicability of the model of Lienhard et al. (1992) and we provide a more accurate set of coefficients for their correlation.

Full text
Abstract:
Activation of the tyrosine kinase activity of the insulin receptor by autophosphorylation leads to phosphorylation of cellular substrates on tyrosine. Thus far, the best characterized is the insulin receptor substrate (IRS) 1, which has been proposed to serve as a docking protein for other molecules involved in signal transduction. A number of other proteins that become phosphorylated in response to insulin have been identified, some of which are reported to be tissue-specific. A 60 kDa phosphoprotein has been detected in adipocytes after insulin stimulation [Lavan and Lienhard (1993) J. Biol. Chem. 268, 5921-5928]. We have identified a protein of similar molecular mass in rat hepatoma cells transfected with the human insulin receptor. The 60 kDa protein in hepatoma cells is tyrosine-phosphorylated in response to insulin in a dose-dependent manner, with maximal phosphorylation occurring at 50 nM insulin. Although the dose-response of p60 phosphorylation mirrors that of IRS-1, the time course is slightly slower, with maximal phosphorylation observed 5 min after addition of insulin. Like the adipocyte protein, the 60 kDa protein detected in liver cells binds to the SH2 domain of the p85 regulatory subunit of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase, but not to other SH2 domains. Binding of p60 to p85 is similar to the interaction between p85 and IRS-1 in that a tyrosine-phosphorylated peptide containing the YVXM motif can inhibit the association. The presence of this 60 kDa tyrosine-phosphorylated protein in adipocytes and hepatoma cells suggests that it represents another important intermediate in the insulin-receptor signal-transduction pathway.

Full text
Abstract:
Direct numerical simulation is used to examine turbulent mixing in a shear-free stably stratified fluid. Energy is continuously supplied to a small region to maintain a well-developed kinetic energy profile, as in an oscillating grid flow (Briggs et al. 1996; Hopfinger & Toly 1976; Nokes 1988). A microscale Reynolds number of 60 is maintained in the source region. The turbulence forms a well-mixed layer which diffuses from the source into the quiescent fluid below. Turbulence transport at the interface causes the mixed layer to grow under weakly stratified conditions. When the stratification is strong, large-scale turbulent transport is inactive and pressure transport becomes the principal mechanism for the growth of the turbulence layer. Down-gradient buoyancy flux is present in the large scales; however, far from the source, weak counter-gradient fluxes appear in the medium to small scales. The production of internal waves and counter-gradient fluxes rapidly reduces the mixing when the turbulent Froude number is lower than unity. When the stratification is weak, the turbulence is strong enough to break up the density interface and transport fluid parcels of different density over large vertical distances. As the stratification intensifies, turbulent eddies flatten against the interface creating anisotropy and internal waves. The dominant entrainment mechanism is then scouring. Mixing efficiency, defined as the ratio of buoyancy flux to available kinetic energy, exhibits a similar dependence on Froude number to other stratified flows (Holt et al. 1992; Lienhard & Van Atta 1990). However, using the anisotropy of the turbulence to define an alternative mixing efficiency and Froude number improves the correlation and allows local scaling.

Abstract:
Transferrin receptors in detergent extracts of subcellular membrane fractions prepared from 3T3-L1 adipocytes were measured by a binding assay. There was a small but significant increase (1.2-fold) in the amount of receptor in a crude plasma membrane fraction and a 40% decrease in the number of transferrin receptors in microsomal membranes prepared from insulin-treated cells, when compared with corresponding fractions from control cells. Intracellular vesicles containing insulin-responsive glucose transporters (GT) have been isolated by immunoadsorption from the microsomal fraction (Biber, J. W., and G. E. Lienhard. 1986. J. Biol. Chem. 261:16180-16184). All of the transferrin receptors in this fraction were localized in these vesicles; however, because the GT vesicles contain approximately 30-fold fewer transferrin receptors than GT, on the average only one vesicle in three contains a transferrin receptor. The binding of 125I-pentamannose 6-phosphate BSA to 3T3-L1 adipocytes at 4 degrees C was used to monitor surface insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II)/mannose 6-phosphate receptors. Exposure of cells to insulin at 37 degrees C for 5 min resulted in a 2.5-4.5-fold increase in surface receptors. There was a corresponding 20% decrease in the amount of IGF-II receptors in the microsomal membranes prepared from insulin-treated cells, as assayed by immunoblotting. Moreover, the IGF-II receptors and GT were located in the same intracellular vesicles, since antibodies to the carboxyterminal peptide of either protein immunoadsorbed vesicles containing 70-95% of both proteins initially present in the microsomal fraction. In conjunction with other studies, these results indicate that in 3T3-L1 adipocytes, three membrane proteins (the GT, the transferrin receptor, and the IGF-II receptor) respond similarly to insulin, by redistributing to the surface from intracellular compartment(s) in which they are colocalized.

Abstract:
Analysis of loss of coolant accident (LOCA) scenarios in nuclear reactor safety evaluation depends on knowledge of many complex phenomena. A primary phenomenon controlling the sequence of events, by determining the residual coolant mass inventory within the primary system, is the critical flow process. Critical flow of a flashing liquid is complicated by marked departure from thermal equilibrium. Several complex models have been proposed to represent the non-equilibrium effects, including six-equation two-fluid models. Amos and Schrock (1983) developed a model based on the premise that the two-phase region is homogeneous and that thermal nonequilibrium is the dominant factor causing the departure from the homogeneous equilibrium idealization. Flashing inception was represented by a modification of the Alamgir-Lienhard (1981) pressure undershoot. Exponential relaxation of the metastable liquid was formulated as suggested by Bauer et al. (1976) and the critical flow criterion used the sound speed formulation of Kroeger (1976). Lee and Schrock (1988) extended the Amos-Schrock work by developing an improved correlation for the pressure undershoot correction factor in terms of Reynolds number and subcooling Jakob number. Improvements were also made in the relaxation constant and in the application of Kroeger’s formulation. In the present paper a new cavity flooding model is used for the evaluation of pressure undershoot at flashing inception. This model is similar to the one developed by Fabic (1964) for the evaluation of liquid superheat required for boiling on a surface subjected to transient heating. The model contains an experimentally deduced factor, which is correlated against stagnation subcooling using the experimental data of Amos and Schrock (1983, 1984), Jeandey et al. (1981), and the Marviken tests (Anon., 1979). The model was then tested against seven additional data sets and shown to be very accurate in predicted mass flux (standard deviation of 10.9 percent for all data). The cavity flooding model is thought to represent the true physics more correctly than does the earlier model, which had its origin in molecular fluctuation theory.

Abstract:
Bigard, Xavier A., Chantal Janmot, Danièle Merino, Françoise Lienhard, Yannick C. Guezennec, and Anne D’Albis.Endurance training affects myosin heavy chain phenotype in regenerating fast-twitch muscle. J. Appl. Physiol. 81(6): 2658–2665, 1996.—The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of treadmill training (2 h/day, 5 days/wk, 30 m/min, 7% grade for 5 wk) on the expression of myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoforms during and after regeneration of a fast-twitch white muscle [extensor digitorum longus (EDL)]. Male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to a sedentary ( n = 10) or an endurance-trained (ET; n = 10) group. EDL muscle degeneration and regeneration were induced by two subcutaneous injections of a snake toxin. Five days after induction of muscle injury, animals were trained over a 5-wk period. It was verified that ∼40 days after venom treatment, central nuclei were present in the treated EDL muscles from sedentary and ET rats. The changes in the expression of MHCs in EDL muscles were detected by using a combination of biochemical and immunocytochemical approaches. Compared with contralateral nondegenerated muscles, relative concentrations of types I, IIa, and IIx MHC isoforms in ET rats were greater in regenerated EDL muscles (146%, P < 0.05; 76%, P < 0.01; 87%, P < 0.01, respectively). Their elevation corresponded to a decrease in the relative concentration of type IIb MHC (−36%, P < 0.01). Although type I accounted for only 3.2% of total myosin in regenerated muscles from the ET group, the cytochemical analysis showed that the proportion of positive staining with the slow MHC antibody was markedly greater in regenerated muscles than in contralateral ones. Collectively, these results demonstrate that the regenerated EDL muscle is sensitive to endurance training and suggest that the training-induced shift in MHC isoforms observed in these muscles resulted from an additive effect of regeneration and repeated exercise.
