Full textWith a clinical approach and by means of original implement, this thesis explores and analyses the psychological and social movements which adolescence engenders for the Down's syndrome young persons and their parents. The adolescent's living experience is appreciated thanks to a mixed methodology (interviews, projective tests, observations, group talks). Semi-direct interviews enabled to explore the parent's personal experience. The transformations related to adolescence had repercussions on the evolution of the Down's syndrome adolescent's relation to the self and the others and on the parents' experience. During this period of time marked by changing, the psychological and affective wounds caused by the handicap's trauma effects are reactivated. The adolescent and the parent go again through a living experience of violence (linked to the emergence of sexuality, the limits and forms of reject imposed by the handicap) which weaken themselves on the narcissistic point of view. To confront it, each of them develops defensive strategies. In that context, it appears that the adolescent's and the parents' investment in the social sphere, the acceptance of a third party in the relationship, would offer ways to liberation so that the adolescent is able to pursue their construction. The methodological reflexions enable to underline how important it is to talk for these young persons, who reveal a great desire to tell about themselves. These reflexions also show the limits in the use of standard clinical implement with this population, as well as the back-ups' required adjustment
Faucheux, Amélie. "Massacrer dans l’intimité : la question des ruptures de liens sociaux et familiaux dans le cas du génocide des Tutsis du Rwanda de 1994." Thesis, Paris, EHESS, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019EHES0003.
Full textHow can we reach the point where we exterminate some of those we have known, including our loved ones?Like the significant example of this hutu woman, married to a tutsi, from the refugees camp in Raducindu, who left her child lying on the floor, letting him to starve to death, only because his father is a tutsi ; such as that priest, born from a hutu father, and now jailed, who tortured daily his mother, a tutsi, until she committed suicide; or like this young militiaman who slaughtered a crowd with a sword in a stadium where thousands of people had taken refuge and then found on the ground the ID card of his uncle, had a look at it, shrugged his shoulders and wondered "did I kill this one?": how conceivable is this massive severing of ties which seemed otherwise indestructible? Who can expect he would be able one day to forget his friends, his mother, his brother or his family? This dissertation examines the mechanism leading to the collapse of social and family ties and its role in the case of the genocide against Tutsis in 1994 in Rwanda. Close to 1 million Rwandan Tutsis were exterminated over a period of 100 days. It is estimated that 60% of these victims were killed by people they knew. The present work tries to offer an explanation of some general scope by building an analytical apparatus based almost exclusively on empirical data gathered during field research in Rwanda, Benin, and South Africa between 2014 and 2017. This analytical apparatus examines how -within a crisis context - ties can break and lead to massacres in the intimate space of social and family relationships. To the question: "how can such destruction of social and family ties be possible ? ", this dissertation responds by highlighting the pivotal importance of a dual identification process. By doing so, it does not exclude the role played by the various advantages (material or symbolic) which benefited those who committed the genocide, but it demonstrates that these identifications themselves may have weighed strongly in this cost/benefit calculation

Full textThe rural population of the Malagasy Central Highlands stands for by a lifestyle which maintains a very close relationship between cultural manners an customs, social links and household economy. However, despite the introduction of innovations, those rural household are suffering from a shortage of agriculture production, and a low access to basic public services. This situation has an impact on the household economic management and in its life quality. As a result, different parameters like harvest managing, mobilization of social links, new innovating practices system must be taken into consideration. In that case, this argument concerning the rural district of Ambalavao aims at bringing knowledge how much these families manage to gather those parameters in their productive strategy and their vision of development

Full textThe coach-athlete relationship is considered as a determining aspect of sport's performance. Coaches have to rely on their scientific knowledge to prepare their athletes to achieve their highest goals. Contrary to other research on sport psychology who based their studies on the interaction with a social or leadership focus, the psychoanalysis approach proposes to deal with the singularity of each athlete's psychic structure. The concept of transference helps to understand that previous relationships with significant others may have consequences on their next relationships. This study aims to analyse the affective process behind the coach-athlete relationship and how the affective demand evolve from childhood to adulthood depending on the athlete's family structure. We interviewed 14 high level players and analysed them as case studies. This case series shows similarities in terms of structure between athletes. The affective demands towards the coach evolve depending on whether the athlete has decided that the primary motivation to compete is the desire to play for him/herself or whether he/she remains dependant on the coach's desire
Gady, Bénédicte. "L'ascension de Charles Le Brun : liens sociaux et production artistique." Paris 4, 2006. http://www.theses.fr/2006PA040190.
Full textHow did Charles Le Brun become First painter to the court of Louis XIV ? Using un published archive documents and a critical reading of the sources, this thesis reflects on the artist’s rise to fame though an exploration of his works and social network. Firstly a study is presented of the painter’s humble family background, the determining role of the protection of Chancellor Séguier, the links between social relations and the structure and style of both his drawings and paintings and finally his travel in Italy (I). This is followed by the period of great challenges (1646-1661): entering into the service of the King, ensuring the existence of the Royal academy and elevation in status of painting and sculpture, the undertaking of strategies in terms of distinction, family, social position, intellect of finance (II). In parallel, Le Brun requested the collaboration of numerous contributors as part of his duties as commissioner of decorative pieces. The analysis of legal connections and the extensive work project undertaken at Vaux-le-Vicomte sheds light on 17th century production methods and re-evaluates the current conception of the “atelier” (III)

Full textThis thesis’s goal is to identify the role of foster family’s husband and to analyze the collaboration modalities between the social workers of foster care of the associative sector and the foster family’s husband. The representations of these two actors are examined by means of two tools of data collection: interviews and questionnaires. A presentation of organizations of services where the investigation had taken place examines the modes of social workers interventions with the foster family and the foster child. The results show that the foster family’s husband is an essential actor of the foster care, that he occupies a role of social paternity with foster child and that he collaborates with the social workers even if his volunteer’s status does not facilitate position towards the professional of the foster care

Full textObesity has become a real health problem. So far, research has only considered obesity in an individual point of view, but this scourge is still getting increasing, especially among children and teenagers. For this reason, we have decided to bring a new point of view and focus upon the family and the way its members behave with one another, thus placing obesity at the heart of inter-subjective relationships. Hence we chose a psychoanalytical perspective and used groupal projective tools, the projective genography test (a free drawing of a family tree) and the family projective spatiography test (a drawing of the dream house). These projective tests examine the diachronic and synchronic dimensions and materialize a unconscious picture of the family body. We therefore carried out a longitudinal study with a representative sample of 43 families whose teenager suffered from obesity. The results show how weak and vulnerable the envelope of the family group can be. Concerning intersubjective bonds, we spotted a psychic undifferenciation leading to isomorphic relationships. Finally, we noticed that the teenage having been separated from his family proved to be traumatic, and that it reactivated former traumas. Thus families build strong strategies of resistance to counteract the fact that one member is changing, forcing the teenager to regain his previous position within the family, by regaining weight, in order to maintain family homeostasis

Full textThrough a clinical method mainly related to the field of psychoanalysis, this study explores, on one hand, the relationship between family type and its structure, and the impact of a structured family on the outbreak of the resilience process among adolescents who experienced the terrorist attacks that struck Algeria in the nineties, thus potentially traumatized, on the other. Such an attempt is based on : - The analysis of the familial representations of ten young adults who experienced terrorism situations during their adolescence, through a semi-directives interviews in order to determine (or identify) the typology, and the level of families' structure. - The analysis of the TAT in order to evaluate the defensive aspect and the ability of intrapsychic adaptation of these persons, or cases [by evaluating the readability of TAT's speech], as well as the analysis of the different protocols [reports of colleagues] to evaluate their interpersonal adaptation's ability. The findings of the study show that : The analysis of the interviews identified a relationship between family typology and the level of its structure. Hence, families that are organized around the vertical dimension seem to be more (solid) structured but with the condition that even they are directed by the father's authority, there is a variety of relationship between other family members such as, mother, brothers and sisters. The analysis of the protocols shows that the persons who represent a structured family are able to be adapted to the society, without the need to be resilient since their TAT's shows a defensive frailty and mental suffering. Whereas, those who represent unstructured family appear to be unable to adapt themselves to the society, through the use of some defensive tools based on avoidance and archaic mechanisms

Full textThis study deals with history of women living in Palestinian refugee camps in Jordan since the 1948 exodus through their family history and relationships. Structured on a variation of the scales of historical analysis, this study folds into three parts. On the one hand, a macor-historic scale dealing with institutions, those of the humanitarian system and the host country, and with Palestinian and Jordanian national histories. It focuses on key events and periods when family function is redefined, when family power and roles change or are embedded in discourses and strategies aimed at modifying or on the opposite at strengthhening them : the two exodus (1948 and 1967), the Palestinian resistance period in Jordan (1968-1971), the renewal of women's activism since the 1989 democratisation process. On the other hand, a micro-hsitoric scale with focuses on family life cycles, on individual life cycle in history through a study of generations and lastly on individual biographies within a family biography. Camp families and individual family values and Palestinian and Islamic parties' use of traditional values in national and activist discourses. Family practices contradict the discourse of family permanence since the exodus, a discourse aimed at establishing identity continuity and denying the historical rupture of exile. The identities and family ressources called upon during exile have modified individual mobilities, and more particulary those of women are determined by collective destiny. Whatever family identify is, history has affected marriage practices and challenged patriarchy and agnatic representation of kindship. Besides, camp families display a process of fragmentation and feminisation. Faced to the difficulties of constructing marital links, women's choices are part of the reconstruction of feminine homosocial networks. Their choices assert a popular feminism building upon family ideology and traditional family values to challenge men's power, arguing that men have been unable to fulfil their protective role towards women in the grimed social and political living conditions of the camps

Full textThis survey bears upon a particular relationship: the one that becomes settled between a woman who has turned into a grandmother and her grandchild (or grandchildren). We point out the relevance that lies in the sociological study of that acting as a grandmother as it corresponds neither to a predefined part nor to explicit rules of conduct. Nevertheless it sets a social status that lasts not only quantitatively because of colongevity that has increased between generations, but also because the various partners and particulary the grandmothers try and give it some content. The demonstration is supported by the analysis of a corpus of thoroughly studied interviews as well as the analysis of the contents of two magazines meant for ald age pensioners. These materials help to nourish the object of our enquiry : grandmotherhood reorganises family ties and processes as a whole and backs up the biographic continuity as regards a particular woman. This self-building brings into action a whole system of intergeneration filial and conjugal relations. We set ouselves in the outline of a comprehensive and constructivist sociology as our concern is to bring to light the various building processes as well as the different methods of explaining social fact, that is to say social structures. Moreover, the different ways of establishing grandmotherhood make up as many ways of althering the worlds of relations in which the individuals are involved. Likewise these worlds of relations build a frame to grandmotherhood processes. The first part of my thesis has unabled me to state which are the contents and pratices used and refered to the position of the grandmother. The second part tries and places the social processes at work, as far as women are concerned, opposing on one side the image of oneself that as been assumed or at least climed and on the other side comparisons in identity that might exist, in particular with grand children's mothers : wheter daughters or daughters-in-law the third part precisely offers a comprehensive typology of differents practices in the field of grandmotherhood. Three ideal-typical forms bring act a state that varies from relations to pratices to filial and intergeneration communications with ancestry and with descendants and to the relations through marriage

Full textSince several years, many measures have been put in place whose role is to encourage the development of family employments. The report that an increasing number of family needs are not satisfied as regards domestic activities, childcare, assistance to, elderly or handicaped people, indeed arouses the interest of the specialists in the field of employment. The object of this research is to, question the impact of this employment policy,on the activities sector. Has the increase in family jobs been accompanied by a similar qualitative increase particularly in terms of employment status for those working at home ? After throwing a historical light on the subject and presenting govemment measures put in place over the last few years, this analysis suggests the possible risk of deadlock for family employments that this policy proposes to, develop. It is a matter of setting out in fine the wherewithal to bridge the gap towards family employments which have both status and durability

Full textWith the increasing amount of educational content produced daily by users, it becomes very difficult for learners to find the resources that are best suited to their needs. Recommendation systems are used in educational platforms to solve the problem of information overload. They are designed to provide relevant resources to a learner using some information about users and resources. The present work fits in the context of recommender systems for educational resources, especially systems that use social information. We have defined an educational resource recommendation approach based on research findings in the area of recommender systems, social networks, and Technology-Enhanced Learning. We rely on social relations between learners to improve the accuracy of recommendations. Our proposal is based on formal models that calculate the similarity between users of a learning environment to generate three types of recommendation, namely the recommendation of 1) popular resources; 2) useful resources; and 3) resources recently consulted. We have developed a learning platform, called Icraa, which integrates our recommendation models. The Icraa platform is a social learning environment that allows learners to download, view and evaluate educational resources. In this thesis, we present the results of an experiment conducted for almost two years on a group of 372 learners of Icraa in a real educational context. The objective of this experiment is to measure the relevance, quality and usefulness of the recommended resources. This study allowed us to analyze the user’s feedback on the three types of recommendations. This analysis is based on the users’ traces which was saved with Icraa and on a questionnaire. We have also performed an offline analysis using a dataset to compare our approach with four base line algorithms

"Famille structurelle, famille fonctionnelle : réflexion sur le travail prétorien d’adaptation de la notion de famille à travers la jurisprudence de la Cour européenne des droits de l’homme et de la Cour suprême du Canada." Thesis, Toulouse 1, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018TOU10050.
Full textAlthough universally known, there is no consensual agreement of the concept of family. The different social sciences, as well as the various branches of law, can’t agree on an unanimous definition. The family presents the paradox of being intimate while depending on the public sphere with regard to its recognition and exercising of the rights related to it. In recent years, the notion of family has been increasingly influenced by fundamental rights and the internationalization of personal relationships. The law, which is normally rigid, seems to have difficulty apprehending the complexity and variability of family situations. Therefore, the use of vague opinions by the legislator offers the judge more latitude of what constitutes a family. In this context, the comparative study of the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights and the Supreme Court of Canada highlights the elements taken into account by judges when they take up family litigation. While the elaboration of a definition does not seem to be able to effectively determine the frame of the notion of family, the use of a mechanism seems, on the contrary, to offer a more flexible approach to the family phenomenon. There are two variables at the heart of the mechanism used in this study that correspond to the two sides a family can fall into: a structural side, which itself will be divided into two components, a legal and a biological one, and a functional side. This dichotomy makes it possible to take into account the real and the complex in a very evolutionary area. In addition, it offers the keys to reasoning by inviting jurists to think about the family without creating causal links between the different sides of the family that are constantly articulated, often agreeing, sometimes conflicting

Full textHow to define and measure trust is still an enigma in economics, philosophy and sociology. This "three papers" thesis compares two different mechanisms - egotiated(decentralised submarket) and auction (centralised submarket) - on the basis of trust. Through an empirical study, the level of trust is evaluated and its impact is analysed on the "Boulogne-sur-Mer" fish market characterised by a stable coexistence of these two mechanisms. The three papers are preceded by a general introduction and a literature review. Paper one aims at comparing the nestedness and the robustness of both submarkets. Social network tools of ecologists are applied in order to provide an answer. Paper two models trust creation on both structures from the buyer side using the survival analysis and considering the buyer size. Paper three studies the effect of a trust index on the outcomes of transactions. Bipartite and projected graphs reveal the difference between submarkets. This thesis shows that the negotiated market is marked by a higher level of trust as agents interact and are not fully informed about the market situation unlike the auction one where information is centralised. We believe that trust is a way out of risk when there is lack of information
Brachotte, Gilles. "Internet et Windows Live Messenger (ex MSN) chez les adolescents. : usages et liens sociaux : entre performance et évolutions ?" Thesis, Dijon, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010DIJOL014.
Full textThis thesis examines the practices and uses of the Internet and of Windows Live Messenger. It charts out different uses of the Internet and WLM among young people, and analyses the way they are adopted, at a time when the individual is experimenting with social and cultural identities. It deals with the specificities of WLM, and the types of sociability associated with it. The results of the study show that practices linked to the objects studied evolve in some areas, while remaining stable in others. The thesis seeks to establish the key traits which go to make up, socially and technically « young people’s culture », and lays out the different criteria specific to the propagation and adoption of a technical artifact by young people. Understanding and analyzing the social uses of WLM allows us to identify the relational context surrounding its insertion and the social and cultural evolutions implied by associated practices. For this reason, the study is based on a corpus composed of two empirical data-sets, recorded three years apart, involving middle-school, high-school and university students from the Côte d’Or region of Burgundy. From a theoretical viewpoint, the study is based on user sociology and approaches the Internet and WLM as social and technical artifacts. This perspective questions the concepts of digital culture, of digital and social divides, of social use and of social relations. A final part of the thesis applies the findings to the development of ICT in Burgundy and in rural regions, in the form of a set of guidelines. A series of three interviews were conducted with local politicians elected to the French senate, in order to establish the vision of political leaders both on local and national levels, concerning the role and the issues surrounding ICT from the point of view of urban development, and their implications, in terms of social relations, for maintaining social cohesion

Full textThis dissertation studies the influence of interpersonal trust and of social ties between venture capitalists (VCs) and managers on processes, on VCs' roles during the post-investment phase, and on the financial performance of private equity investments. The main assumption is that trust and social ties foster cooperation and positively influence financial performance through the mediation of processes and of VCs consulting and interpersonal roles. Two models are tested, using data issued from a postal survey on LBOs initiated in France in 1998 and 1999. The results show that trust has a positive influence on all processes and on some VCs roles, but no direct influence on performance. As regards social ties, they show a direct positive impact on performance through the mediation of processes

Full textStudy 1- Aim: Explore the contributions of sociocultural and psychopathological factors to suicidal ideation among of 292 adolescents with an immigrant background. Although stressful life events, depressive symptoms, and individualism were risk factors, and attachment to parents a protective factor for both boys and girls, some gender differences emerged. Borderline traits (risk factor), assimilation and marginalization (both protective factors) were significant predictors only among girls.Study 2- Aim: Explore ethnic differences (717 French vs. 251 with an immigrant background) regarding risk and protective factors associated to suicidal ideation among adolescents. The frequency of serious suicidal ideation was higher among the ethnic minority males group compared to the French males group. The mean of suicidal ideation however was higher among the ethnic minority group of females. Ethnic differences were observed regarding the age among males in the prediction of suicidal ideation and self-serving cognitive distortions, borderline traits, and social anxiety among females. Study 3- Aim: Examine suicidal ideation and depressive symptoms in France, both across variables and across persons in a non-clinical sample of adolescents with an immigrant background. Marginalization significantly predicted suicidal ideation whereas perceived discrimination significantly predicted depressive symptoms. Four latent classes emerged from analysis—“Separated-Integrated”, “Integrated”, “Undifferentiated” (characterized by adolescents who were not associated with any of the acculturation categories), and the “Individualized-Assimilated”. Significant differences appeared between the four classes for the indices of ethnic identity, perceived discrimination, and acculturative stress. Prevalence and mean score of suicidal ideation and depressive symptoms were high among both the sample and the four acculturative profiles; however no differences between the four classes emerged.Study 4- Aim: Identify cognitive and behavioral aspects which underline suicidal ideation and attempts of 15 adolescents with an immigrant background. Suicide represents “a way to release itself from the constraint to feign an identity”, and to “regain control”. Cultural dissonance, cognitive distortions, identity cognitions emphasize the emergence of self-destructive behaviors and coping strategies. These cognitive and behavioral aspects, underlined by contradictory cultural elements, lead these adolescents to anticipate a possible rejection, which may cause a fear of abandonment

Full textHow does one reconstruct the complexity of experimental collective situations of reflection on action based on a game designed to teach. The answer is transversal to research, which, for a long time, has remained undecided on the principal direction and the object studied : the representation of action logic by the actors in social centres using a pack of cards containing six logics divided into ten themes. This point effectively raises as many questions on methodology as difficulties of bringing it into play. An analysis of the data reveals the complexity of an evolving educational global research mechanism. The obstructing and annoying hazards of development of this research ; the plural identity of the social centres and the differences in the studied population – volunteers and employees ; the originality of the research support ; the multidimensional representations of action logic have called for an appropriate epistemological attitude : exacting and personal. In view of the difficulties encountered and the resulting existential discomfort, the engagement to satisfy the demand of scientific research was uncertain and uneasy to establish. This uncertainty brings an unexpected finality and relief in questioning the limit conditions of apprenticeship of research by research

Full textThe change in infrastructural and economic circumstances in the 2000s has largely changed the characteristics and educational plans of Korean students in France. As part of an ethnography of the biographical pathways of Korean students in France (thirty interviews between 2011 and 2015) and their families in South Korea (twenty cases, summer 2012 and 2014), this thesis restores the analysis of the comparison of groups of Korean students according to the time of arrival in France between 2000 and 2010. It is a question of determining the evolution of students relationships with their family, the modalities of support and the projects of life, between these two groups based on class, gender, age and type of education. In the transnational context, the experience of distance encourages us to come together to maintain a family relationship thanks to new communication technologies and accentuates the dynamism of emotional support. Instead of the dual absence proposed by Sayad, today, the "tran-sitional" period of student migration entails a double material and emotional presence throughout the stay abroad. On the one hand, family supports adapt or undergo modifications. On the other hand, the extended stay, the self-managed temporal rhythm and the markers identified as possible contribute to trigger migratory life projects. This research is an opportunity to take stock to address the moral and practical obligations that must occur, what we call delayed care, both care "temporal", "delayed", but always "remote"

Full textWe studied the influence of social motivation, defined as the motivation to seek social proximity, on the formation of social relationships between familiar conspecifics in Japanese quail selected for their high (HSR) or low (LSR) social reinstatement behaviour. After a short duration of pair contact (= 24h), one-week-old LSR quail showed a stronger preference for a familiar conspecific than HSR quail. However, six-week-old HSR quail revealed a stronger ability to discriminate according to familiarity than LSR ones. The HSR quail chicks formed a weaker social bond with the familiar conspecific than LSR ones, despite their higher social motivation. The strength of the bond decreased with increasing group size in both lines. Social instability induced a decrease in emotional reactivity (ER) of LSR quail, which indicates habituation to social changes, whereas ER of HSR quail was high regardless of social conditions. At last, LSR quail chicks showed a higher ER than LSR quail. To conclude, social motivation clearly influences the way Japanese quail chicks perceive their social environment and interact with it, and LSR quail seem able to adapt more easily to life in groups

Full textThis thesis is dedicated to the analysis of the social links and relations between city and campaign such as they appear from a musical practice of Tulear's region (Southwest of Madagascar) : "tsapiky". This music may be interpreted as a means of overtaking of the existing structures of subjection. Moreover, by mobilizing and renovating resources supplied by cultural inheritances, it plays a key role in the building of a regional identity. Althought kept in ritual contexts as well as monetary ones, "tsapiky" shows an original articulation between the city and the country side. The aim of the thesis is to demonstrate that in situations of acculturation, beyond the various constraints in which it evolves, "tsapiky" as "young music", participates to the establishing of a series of relativively autonomous social links, and endorses rich and complex meanings, due to the specific articulation it creates between past, present and the futur

Full textSocial disparities endured by social service users are exaggerated when encountered by immigrants: in employment, accommodation, precariousness… Besides, as a result of the migration itself, family spheres experience deep transformations through the re-composition of roles and status, through a new conception of authority. Relations between generations or inside the couple are put to the test, and sometimes generate family crisis for which institutions can be solicited. Any social intervention implies difficulties, but in addition to those conflicting situations in families, other elements must be considered, which are connected to cultural diversity and integration – both ambiguous terms that are very controversial in French society.Social workers’ mandate and missions belong to common institution and ethic, but the ways of intervention in a migratory context are multiple and diverse. They are the result of personal methods of thinking and doing, fluctuating between the ‘universal’ and the ‘particular’. Professionals are in charge of helping immigrants throughout the process of integration, and have of course their own social representations that lead to act one way or another, for the sake of certain values. In those situations of internal family crisis, otherness and cultural and value models bring the practitioner’s ‘professional self’ to the light and reveal his/her representation about the immigrants’ behaviour; value system and prejudice, affects, interpretations and judgements put a question to the very foundation of their professional roles. Social representations orientate practices and also fulfill an identity function by determining how a certain group conceive of themselves and of groups they interact with. The study of the relation between the immigrants’ social and cultural behaviour and the Social Workers’s practices is the central point of this research. The dissertation aims to determine the different representations at stake, how they come out and influence the mode of intervention

Full textThe link stream formalism represent an approach allowing to capture the system dynamic while providing a framework to understand the system's behavior. A link stream is a sequence of triplet (t,u,v) indicating that an interaction occurred between u and v at time t. The importance of the system's dynamic during the prediction places it at the crossroads of link prediction in graphs and time series prediction. We will explore several formalizations of the problem of prediction in link streams. In the following we will study the activity prediction, that is to say predicting the number of interactions occurring in the future between each pair of nodes during a given period. We introduce the protocol, allowing to combine the data characteristics to predict the activity. We study the behavior of our protocol during several experiments on four datasets et evaluate the prediction quality. We will look at how the introduction of pair of nodes classes allows to preserve the link diversity in the prediction while improving the prediction. Our goal is to define a general prediction framework allowing in-depth studies of the relationship between temporal and structural characteristics in prediction tasks

Full textMy dissertation seeks to capture the complex interplays between positive and negative affects by delving into the two social relations that have been relatively understudied: negative ties and ambivalent ties within teams. In the first essay, I seek to delineate intra-team conflicts into different patterns of negative ties among team members, complementing the approach to intra-team conflict that has focused on the contents of conflict (e.g., task or interpersonal conflict). Taking a configural approach, I present a typology of within-team conflict that is based on four prototypical configurations of negative ties: “Battlefield,” “Public Enemy,” “Duels,” and “Rival Factions.” I demonstrate how these configurations of negative ties help us to better understand the origins and consequences of team conflict, and also delineate how positive ties could mitigate the negative effects of each team conflict type. The second essay explicates the nature of ambivalent relationships within teams. In this study, I seek to advance the literature on ambivalent ties by furthering the understanding of ambivalent relationships. In particular, I attempt to dispel a common confusion between ambivalent and ambiguous ties by identifying their distinct antecedents at the individual and dyadic level. Building on the clarification of ambivalent relationships in the second essay, the third essay takes the ambivalence to a team context, introducing the concept of “team ambivalence.” With the assumption that team members’ ambivalence about their teams is deeply rooted in their experience of dyadic relationships within their teams, I propose two different relationship patterns that lead to team ambivalence: within-tie and between-tie incongruence. Based on these patterns, I propose a theoretical model that explores the origins and consequences of team ambivalence

Full textIn this dissertation, we investigate the professional and familial aspects of employment instability among young under-qualified workers. Our study employs contributions from the sociology of work to interpret the increasing importance of professional mobility. Additionally, ressources of sociology of public policies are mobilized to define the role given to the familial institution in state management of the duty to integrate young people in the workplace. The qualitative investigation with young adults from thirty to thirty-five years old, in Seine-Saint-Denis (France), points out that familial support is rarely expressed for issues of employment. The majority of them continues to live under the family roof far beyond the normal ages of juvenile decohabitation. This long-term intergenerational proximity reveals some distortions of family ties and interdependence; we show in particular the existence of 'pacts of stabilization' between various generations

Full textThis socio-anthropological research focuses on the phenomena of social mobility and reproduction in a rural area of Guinea, related to the introduction of two important bauxite plants (CBG and Fria). First of all, the author describes the industrial and social organisation of the plants and analyzes the evolution of the work relationships resulting from the implementation of the restructuring project. Then, he lists the most important causes for the children of workers seeking intergenerational mobility. He explains the reproduction of the worker status by such factors as the firms' paternalistic social policy, the recruitment strategies, the modes of apprenticeship and the arousing of domestic groups centred on the wage-worker and based on women's work. Finally, the author describes some workers' social success in terms of notabilisation, either in village or in town. Workers who do not succeed in domesticate the industrial organiszation by becoming notables are easily victimes of pauperization after retirement

This doctoral dissertation focuses on parental literacy practices as predictors of early and long lasting differences in reading achievement. Previous studies have documented preferential associations between two types of parental literacy practices, namely parent-child reading and parental teaching of letters, and pre-reading as well as reading skills without formally evaluating the hypothesis of mediation processes. The main objective of the doctoral dissertation is to formally evaluate this putative dual pathway using path analysis. Our longitudinal research design is unique as we repeatedly evaluated parental literacy practices over early childhood, which can inform us on the appropriateness of different literacy practices from toddlerhood onward. We found that parental teaching of letters at ages 4 and 5 contribute indirectly to reading skills (8 years old; decoding and reading comprehension) through their effect on early letter knowledge (5 years old). Conversely, vocabulary development (5 years old) mediated the influence of parent-child reading at 2½, 4 and 5 years on reading comprehension (8 years old). Results have important implications as to the specific stimulations enhancing each aspect of literacy development and suggest ages around which they begin to influence children’s development.

Full textThe present research attempts to answer the two central following questions: can we explain the uncivil tendancy of young children and teenagers by their feeling of abandonment ? How far this feeling is aggravated by lack of socialization, parental care and affection dedicated to the young people, as well as other internal or external factors of social deviance ? For this purpose, we suppose that there exists a causal link between the teenagers feeling of being abandoned and thier uncivil or criminal tendacncy. The most simplistic vison of these two interdependent factors brings two characters to light: that the mother who feels abandoned because of a failing husband and that of her child or her teenager who, in his turn, has a similar feeling, connected most of the time to that of his mother. It has to be mentioned, from the outstart that, on a world scale, the social and economic situation which is being experienced today demonstrates a swift change in the cultural, and sometimes, an institutional attitude. There appears to be a media failure whereas deviant comportements (incivilitiesn, violence, criminal acts) are highlighted. This appears to be an accepted behaviour as it develops within circles of youth, groups of adults , the family and schools. This is not only in the urban setting, but now also in rural and suburban environment. The incivility phenomenon, which is not new and whose rise has been detected on the increase in recent years in France and Africa is all the more alarming since it appears to affect children at home, children in nursery schools, those who are left alone, and those children whose parents, for one reason or another, cannot, dedicate their full attention in the rearing of minors. This situation not only engenders significant public economic costs and distress to inhabitants of particular zones, it also endangers the psychological situation of its authors or victims. The focus of our attention turns towards adolescents and their interaction with their families and other agents of socialization. All along, we saught to verify whether or not this family and social feeling of abandonement among the youth made them more inclined to incivility than any other general psychological, social, environmental or economic factor. We also bore in mind that, at the origin of a youthful incivility, there may be a more or less strong feeling of abandonment to which an appropriate response had not been brought at the right time. We finally put the stress on the hypothesis that many teenagers may be resilient and thus avoid falling in the trap of social deviance despite the presence of the above mentioned factors

Full textThe literature on workplace stress often considers that people who lack social support tend to have higher levels of perceived stress. This is empirically confirmed, but it is not always taken into account and offers limited scope. Indeed, why do some employees have more access to social support? What renders support more available and more varied from one person to the other? These questions allow us to situate perceived social support, and more accurately the perceived support of colleagues, in a larger theoretical model, enhanced by social network theory. Through an explanatory model, the objective of this research is to explore the role of the positioning of the individual in the social network on perceived workplace stress. Based on a “complete network” data in a medium-sized IT services company, we used partial least squares to test our hypothesis (N = 343). The strength of ties affects stress through social support, such that people with stronger ties perceive more support and ultimately exhibit less stress. However, the direct link between strength and stress is not established. Bridging ties (supportive ties to other departments) negatively influence social support (a situation which increases stress) but also have a direct negative effect on stress. By stressing the role of social relationships as an antecedent of social support and stress, our results offer new potential managerial actions within organizations
