Uogintas; Šiauliai University, Faculty of Arts, Art Department. Šiauliai 2014, 43 pages. In this Bachelor„s work the author is looking into social portrait photography by first of all discussing documentary photography, and then social-documentary photography as social portraiture is an inseparable part of these two similar genres. Further on the origins of social documentary photography is discussed based on M. Matulytė„s theoretical work on the subject. For the creative part of the work, a specific group of social isolation is chosen (homeless people) and its relevance as that of a social problem is explained with a short overview of the development of the said social problem. The first part touches the suject of both documentary and social documentary photography as a context for the theory on social portraiture, definition of which is then based on the mentioned genres. The similarities and differences between the genres are pointed out. The second part contains an overview of social-psichological portraiture in the works of Antanas Sutkus with detailed analysis of the psichological aspect of his portraits as well as general features peviously described in the social portrait definition. Full textIt is inexpedient now to talk about is photography an art, or it isn’t. It’s a result of the concordance that there are some kind of symbiosis between artistry and documentary in photography. Additionally, photography has modified the protocol with industry, with science, with advertising, with journalism, with communication, with art, with everyday life… Consequently photography can’t yet be studied as an autonomous discipline. It is more productive to look at it in its applications in other fields. For this reason it is necessary to analyze the photographs of Antanas Sutkus, the famous Lithuanian photographer, in the fields of anthropology, of social and communication sciences and of art. The other problem is that various European countries, to say nothing of whole continents (for example so called Third World), have been left on the fringes of the histories of photography. To avoid this mistake it is purposeful to look at the photographs of Antanas Sutkus also in the context of the Western countries that have their own photographic traditions. Furthermore, there are some principal filters – cultural, ideological and political – that have determined the dominant historiographic models and the photographic tradition itself. The major part of Antanas’ Sutkus’ photographs were made when Lithuania was the constituent of the Soviet Union. Consequently it is imperative to talk about Soviet ideology that carried authority on the creation of Antanas Sutkus and on the entire... [to full text]

Full textIn this master’s paper “The development of the humanistic portrait in Lithuanian photography in the 2nd half of the 20th century” the concept of the family myth and its entanglement with photography is discussed. The psychological and aesthetical effects of photography on a person are revealed; the interplay of creativity and the mythic family in contexts of history, time, space, and the arts is shown. The context of Lithuania’s photography is analysed and compared with a historical photography archive of Western Europe and America. The family myth is deemed to be an intimate field of humanity, where traditions, rules, cultures, interests, feminine and masculine natures collide. Research showed that these domains (photography and family) have some intertwining features and ideas which complement each other. The only difference is that two distinct phenomena are at work here – photography as process and information, and a person as a process of ministry or destruction of the family myth. The concept of humanism in Lithuania and the West, the development, expression, and particularities of the humanistic photography portrait in Lithuania are provided in this research paper. Humanism is accented as a trait that fundamentally determined the style of photography. However, this trait was followed by the old generation of photographers (A. Sutkus, A. Kunčius, A. Macijauskas, R. Rakauskas), who fostered the humanistic traditions of the Lithuanian photography school (LPS)... [to full text]

Full textThe paper deals with the analysis of contemporary Lithuanian documentary film in the field of communication and culture theories, where “contemporary” film is considered to be made more or less in the last ten years. It analyses the object in the terms of innovation of definition, iconography of the protagonist and structures of narratives. The definition of documentary film is examined on the one hand from the journalistic point of view, characterizing it as a fact-based film that depicts actual events and persons; on the other hand, in the film theory sight it is considered to be a manipulative narration of the story, taken out of reality. A central question is if characteristics of factuality is remaining the main one talking about the documentary film, as the examples of Lithuanian poetic documentaries are far-off exposing of reality. That is why this study suggests a new definition of the object, putting a director’s role in the narrative above actual reflection of factuality: a documentary is called here a director’s viewpoint (in the case of Lithuanian poetic genre – a meditation) on the phenomena of the objective reality. Qualitative film text analysis and the communicational approaches of John Fiske, Marshall McLuhan and Jean Baudrillard’s ideas provide the theoretical framework for the study. Documentary films are analyzed as the object of science of communication. It is focused on reading the communicational codes and conventions in different genres of documentary... [to full text]
