AbstractSiC/SiC composites have attracted increasing attention in various applications such as turbine blades, exhaust nozzles, and combustor chambers, due to their exceptional mechanical and thermal properties. However, the environmental impact of these composites across their life cycle is an important aspect that needs to be evaluated to support their responsible development and use. In this study, a life cycle assessment of SiC/SiC woven laminate ceramic matrix composites to quantify their environmental impacts from cradle-to-gate was conducted. Three different manufacturing methods to produce SiC/SiC woven laminates were researched: chemical vapour infiltration (CVI), pyrolysis of a preceramic polymer (PIP), and melt infiltration (MI). The Life Cycle Assessment approach was utilized to identify the effect outcomes for each process, analysing the raw material extraction, raw material processing, and final product manufacturing phases to develop the environmental impact assessment. The study's outcome showed that CVI had the lowest average environmental impact between the two methods.

Abstract:
Abstract Environmental performance is increasingly being emphasized during the design phase. Although the lack of quantity and quality of data leads to inaccurate environmental results in the early stages of design, the ability of life cycle assessment (LCA) to influent environmental performance of the product is significant during this phase. This article aims to evaluate the data uncertainty of LCA during the design phase, integrate the data quality assessment results into the sustainability-oriented development process (NEP), and provide more accurate environmental influence information in the early stages of the design process to avoid major changes later. To that purpose, the life cycle inventory (LCI) data of hydrogen tank production based on pedigree matrix method is used to analyse the data quality of existing data in the early design stages. Methodologies are investigated which link these pedigree matrix methods to data of contribution analysis and probability distributions in order to predict data uncertainty in life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) results. A framework will then be proposed which allows to decide if further data updating or process refinement is needed based the calculated uncertainty for the predicted LCIA result. Through data quality analysis the reliability of LCA results can be improved at early design stage, and according to combination with the sustainable development proc ess LCA can identify the environmental influence during design phase, to avoid the large-scale change due to that in the late stages of design.

Abstract:
AbstractThe construction sector has a considerable impact on the environment in terms of both exploited natural resources and greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, converting the production process from linear to circular is essential. In increasingly vulnerable human settlements, post-emergency recovery can become an opportunity to develop innovative circular design strategies. The research focuses on how to strengthen the resilience of risk-prone territories through pre-disaster strategic planning based on a systemic approach. Post-emergency management of 2009 and 2016–2017 earthquakes in the inner areas of Central Italy is assumed as a case study. In particular, the tender specifications that guided the recovery revealed a deep lack of preventive programmes on the post-use phase of the settlements, which remain suspended between temporary and permanent. Starting from the analysis, the paper proposes a matrix of alternative scenarios for the end-of-life of temporary structures. The matrix allows connecting the recovery phase with the objectives of social cohesion and territorial regeneration policies, adapting the response to the needs of the specific context. Assuming that the artefact’s technological requirements depend on the different perspectives of their life cycle, the scenarios are oriented towards different degrees of reversibility, addressing the complete disassembly, with the reuse and recycling of components, up to the reconversion of temporary assets as local facilities and as resources for green and digital transition. Integrating post-disaster into ordinary tools would trigger virtuous synergies to optimise public funding use. In this framework, post-disaster temporary housing can become a field of experimentation for disaster-resilient communities and circular economy.

AbstractIn the current complexity of the design process, it is important to clarify the information flow for the creation of smart architectures. This clarity ensures coherence at each design scale, up to the definition of construction elements that make them effectively realizable and manageable throughout their entire life cycle. This paper presents a definition of sustainable metamodules using homogeneous sets of smartness indicators to support the design workflow. It specifically focuses on façades with a transparent base skin that can be digitalized through a BIM-based approach, promoting interoperability and multidisciplinary control. In analyzing present societal demands and the features of smart architectures, a range of smartness indicators will be established as parameters that contemporary architecture should consider to be classified as smart. The information cores formed by the combination of the predetermined parameters and feasible design solutions will be stated at every level of design detail.Following BIM regulations and leveraging the customization capabilities of open-format files (IFC), the earlier identified metamodules will be stated at various Levels of Detail (LOD), crafting suitable property sets within a BIM authoring software. This process will generate a structured matrix capable of supporting designers’ decisions in the realization of smart architectures.

Abstract:
The high temperature fatigue behaviour of two 2D reinforced ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) Is studied under high vacuum conditions. The mechanical loads imposed result in matrix cracking upon first loading, so that continued cyclic loading results in progressive interfacial debonding and/or matrix crack multiplication, as well as fibre failure. In order to investigate whether the fatigue life is mainly governed by time-dependent creep or by cyclically induced fatigue damage, a range of frequencies and two stress ratios are explored in stress controlled fatigue tests. Abstract:
Water management plays a vital role in the oil and gas industry since it is an important injectant to maintain reservoir pressure in addition to being a by-product of oil crude production which needs to be separated. Optimal water management is critical for maximizing production profitability and hence minimizing total water life-cycle costs. This paper presents an integrated water management life cycle strategy for one of the largest offshore oilfields in the world. The subject field is currently injecting seawater under matrix injection mode. Reservoir souring, scale modelling, core-flood te

Full text
Abstract:
Steel girder ends are susceptible to corrosion damage due to deicing salts, water, and other contaminants leaking from failed expansion joints. When corrosion becomes significant, it leads to a reduction in the sectional properties of steel girders and consequently reduces bearing and shear resistance. Conventional repair methods, although effective, require substantial time and resources to complete, causing public inconvenience from necessary traffic closures. Therefore, there is a need for practical, rapid, and robust repair methods suitable for implementation by local Department of Transpo

Abstract:
In 2006, the Board of Governors of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB,or the Bank) authorized a major restructuring of the Bank (the "Realignment") to address the perceived loss of relevance and presence of the institution in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The Realignment introduced a number of reforms, including a new organizational structure (the Matrix Structure), a revised process for project design and execution (the New Project Cycle), and the renewal of human resource skills and decentralization of personnel. Abstract:
Researchers have been studying wide-base tires for over two decades, but no evidence has been provided regarding the net benefit of this tire technology. In this study, a comprehensive approach is used to compare new-generation wide-base tires (NG-WBT) with the dual-tire assembly (DTA). Numerical modeling, prediction methods, experimental measurements, and environmental impact assessment were combined to provide recommendations about the use of NG-WBT. A finite element approach, considering variables usually omitted in the conventional analysis of flexible pavement was utilized for modeling. F

Abstract:
The objective of the PRCI MATR-3-11 Composite Repair Load Transfer Study was to evaluate the effect of internal pipe pressure during installation of composite reinforcement systems. Historically, there has been little work evaluating the effect of internal pressure during installation, even though almost all composite installations on transmission pipelines are performed with internal pressure present in the pipe. The focus of this work was specifically limited to reinforcement of pipelines containing simulated corrosion anomalies. Five composite repair technologies from four composite manufac

Abstract:
Mitochondria are the site of respiration and numerous other metabolic processes required for plant growth and development. Increased demands for metabolic energy are observed during different stages in the plants life cycle, but are particularly ample during germination and reproductive organ development. These activities are dependent upon the tight regulation of the expression and accumulation of various organellar proteins. Plant mitochondria contain their own genomes (mtDNA), which encode for a small number of genes required in organellar genome expression and respiration. Yet, the vast ma

Value for Money: Guidance Note on Procurement. Asian Development Bank, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.22617/tim210479-2.

Full text
Abstract:
This guidance note discusses the principle of value for money (VFM) and its relevance and application to the different phases of the ADB procurement cycle. It also introduces “life cycle costing,” which takes into account not only the acquisition cost, but also a combination of paid price plus the cost of operating and maintaining the goods or services procured. The guidance note provides a matrix of the relationship of VFM with other ADB core procurement principles to give a better understanding of how VFM works with the other principles.
