High-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes usually go through an evolution of stages in their life cycle. The typical evolution includes changes in demand levels from several modes including 2+ or 3+ carpools and vanpools, transit, and general-purpose vehicles. To ensure adequate usage, most facilities have started out with a designation of HOV2+. In some cases, over time, HOV2 volumes have exceeded the capacity of the facility, which has caused delays for transit vehicles. Therefore, there is an inevitable need for managing the hierarchy of facility users over time. A graphical tool is presented that

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility. A BIM is a shared knowledge resource for information about a facility forming a reliable basis for decisions during its life-cycle; defined as existing from earliest conception to demolition. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a process involving the generation and management of digital representations of physical and functional characteristics of places. BIM are files (often but not always in proprietary formats and containing proprietary data) which can be exchanged o

This study investigates the strain-controlled low-cycle fatigue (LCF) behaviour of an untreated and surface-treated MAR-M247 superalloy in a symmetrical push-pull cycle with a constant strain rate at 900°C in laboratory air. A newly developed experimental thermal and environmental barrier coating (TEBC) system, consisting of a 170 μm thick CoNiCrAlY bond coat (BC) and a bilayer ceramic top coat (TC), with an interlayer and an upper layer, was deposited using air plasma spray techniques. The ceramic interlayer with an average thickness of 77 μm was formed from agglomerated and sintered yttria-s

This study was undertaken in order to provide better insight into the dynamics of the life-cycle model and to develop a set of quantitative relationships that model the behaviour of macroeconomic aggregates. To begin, a microeconomic model was constructed which could, with a certain accuracy, reproduce behaviour patterns based on the life-cycle hypothesis and, with the aid of observed data on the Canadian population structure, generate a number of macroeconomic variables implied by this behaviour. The dynamics of this model were then examined in a number of simulations in which the effects of

Abstract The highest efficiency in the usage of nuclear energy resources can be implemented in fast breeder reactors of generation IV. It is achieved thanks to the ability of consuming minor actinides (MAs) in energy production. One of the options to use this benefit is full recycling of MAs to close the nuclear fuel cycle. Monte Carlo burn up (MCB), an integrated burn-up calculation code, deals with the complexity of the burn-up process which is applied to the European Lead-cooled Fast Reactor (ELFR). MCB uses continuous energy representation of cross section and spatial effects of full core

Purpose In spite of the urge among stakeholders to increase sustainability in the built environment, the South African Construction Industry (SACI) continues to suffer from low level of adoption of strategies such as life cycle assessment (LCA) to increase sustainable building practices in building and infrastructure delivery, hence the need to increase the adoption of sustainable concepts and sustainability practices is an emergent necessity. This study aims to identify the measures that can increase the adoption of LCA toward overcoming the practical difficulties, theoretical concerns and st

This paper describes a generic approach to guiding designers when making decisions during the early stages of design. The objective of the research is to enable designers to foresee unintended life-cycle consequences during mechanical component design. Engineering design is a process of evolving solutions to a design problem through the commitment of decisions. As a designer commits a new design decision, a more concrete design solution is generated. Decisions made can have intended and unintended consequences on the performance of the life phase activities that follow, such as manufacturing,

Ontologies are one of the most popular and widespread means of knowledge representation and reuse. A few research groups have proposed a series of methodologies for developing their own standard ontologies. However, because this ontological construction concerns special fields, there is no standard method to build domain ontology. In this paper, based on discussing and analyzing representative ontology building methodologies, the authors propose a knowledge engineering approach to build domain ontology by combining software development life cycle standard IEEE 1074-2006 with design ontology cr

Abstract:
This article presents a systematic approach to solving a problem with rational use of an airport’s water resources. Life cycle programming of the technological systems of wastewater purification allowed to consider comprehensively the problem of economical water consumption. The life cycle programming was adopted as the methodological basis for constructing a logical scheme of tasks of an airport’s water-saving processes. On the basis of the proposed logical tasks diagram it became possible to develop an algorithm and software for automatized control over airport’s water-saving processes. The
