Abstract:
This research examines the relationship between community festivals and social capital across time and place. Social capital includes the social networks, norms, and trust that enable groups of individuals to cooperate in pursuing shared objectives, and benefits accrue to both the individual and the community. Research shows the ancient Greek and American Indian civilizations relied on festivals for a variety of purposes relating to social capital, including the bridging of social divides, the transmission of cultural heritage, and the reinforcement of community identity. Today, research findings from five small town festivals in Indiana indicate a similar relationship with social capital. Festivals can bring a community together, offer a shared experience for a diverse group of people, build new relationships, and foster community pride and identity. As such, community festivals may serve as a tool for community planners in building or sustaining social capital in a community.
Department of Urban Planning

Abstract:

Together with djs, musicians, set and light designers as well as the participating public, video jockeys (vjs) compose dance floor ambientations, while manipulating and projecting audiovisual content in real time. This study adopts a semiotic approach in the inquiry into the strategies through which vjs create ambientations in their performances by means of live visuals and soundscapes. Nine parties, shows, and festivals from 2011 to 2016 are the object of detailed semiotic and multimedia analyses. Part 1 describes the data, exemplifies the variety of vjing scenarios, and identifies live performance, synaesthetic effects, and collage as the three principal strategies of creative practice. Part 2 introduces H. Gumbrecht’s theory of the production of presence in light of C. S. Peirce’s semiotics. It distinguishes six dimensions of presence that transform a dance floor into a creative semiotic space: (1) Stimmung (free possibilities of attunement), (2) mood (materialized quality), (3) atmosphere (or mood chaining), (4) the environment (movement in the atmospheres), (5) “scapes” (limitations and perceptual restrictions in the environment), and (6) ambience (patterns regulating atmospheric transitions). During a live video fruition, ambientation creates tensions oscillating between effects of presence (contact and rhythm) and effects of sense (intellectual depths and meanings). On the dance floor, vjs mobilize sensory qualities and combine them with actions and habits. They build a universe of Stimmungen from which all participants in the performance, immersed and surrounded in ambientation, are free to choose and create their own semiosic helix. The general effects of the event are commotion, emotive condition, and energetic reaction, together with effects of meaning
Abstract:
Urban festival actively sought to transform the early modern city, creating an idealised space that was deemed to be a more suitable site for celebration. This dissertation shows how urban festival marked both the conjuncture and disjuncture between a rhetorical ideal and the challenges inherent in its practical realisation in London and Paris between 1660 and 1715. Celebrations were located in the real early modern city‐ a space that posed all manner of design problems for those responsible for designing, devising and choreographing festival. While the ideal celebratory city did exist in the rhetoric that informed preparations for events and their representation, festival also constituted a series of performances in real space and time that were subject to uncontrollable factors, such as poor weather, injury, uncooperative workforces and imperfect audience response. Only those charged with commemorating festival had full control over the event, producing the books, chronicles and illustrative material that are most often consulted as sources by festival historians. By means of a tripartite structure, this dissertation will interrogate how the deployment of the spectacular aspired to create the ideal celebratory city at three key moments in the narrative of every celebration. The first section focuses on the practical and legislative preparations made before events. The second section considers the evidence of what actually happened during the performance or realisation of the events. The third, and final, part of the dissertation looks at the representation of celebrations in printed textual descriptions and visual images. Starting from the evidence of objects, including viewing platforms, fireworks, temporary architecture and bonfires, it will suggest the extent to which the ideal was achieved and the ways in which it influenced the practice of those involved in its production. Moreover, as a single event could be informed by more than one version of the ideal celebratory city, evidence of preparation, performance and representation will also demonstrate how far celebrations were the product of contested ideals.

Abstract:
There are 55 ethnic minorities (少數民族) in the People’s Republic of China, among which Mulam Minority (仫佬族) is a small one gathering in a remote town in the northern part of Guangxi Province. Every group of people has their own culture and tradition, usually culture reflects on the food, drinks, clothe, rituals and festivals, etc. The most important festival of Mulam Minority is Yi Fan Festival (依飯節), which has been designated as a national-level intangible cultural heritage in 2006. The current research will look into the changes in this particular festival after its designation in terms of both tangible and intangible aspects; also it’s a look into the local traditional culture within its context. The identity of a culture is hard to define and is also changing with time. It is when based on the defined cultural identity can a tradition advance with time without losing its authenticity. How to make conservation become a part of the development is what we are facing in the fast-changing world. Since festival consists an indispensable part of traditional culture, how to transmit it through media and how to interpret it becomes the key question. As a young stakeholder of the Mulam Minority, we should understand the opportunities, challenges, strengths and weaknesses of every change that is going to happen, and above all, carry on practicing.
published_or_final_version
Conservation
Master
Master of Science in Conservation

Abstract:
The aim is to determine how the media environment affects the way in which live performance is received, distributed, and participated in. Based particularly on media and cultural convergence, the study analyses contemporary social changes regarding the public's interaction with the distribution, multiplication, interconnection and ubiquity of resources, and the flow of information and communication. The aim is to show that the current media ecosystem is in need of a new relationship with audiences. 12 in-depth interviews were conducted with performing arts professionals and a case study was carried out on audiences at the Temporada Alta performing arts festival. The empirical study lies in an online ethnographic study on the social interaction of audiences using Twitter and in an online survey. The results of the study give insights into inequality in cultural participation, and propose a classification based on interactions between members of the audience and the cultural product.
It offers to tackle the question of the development and regeneration of rural areas, specifically in the region of Alentejo, Portugal, within different scopes of society such as - but not only - the social, economic, cultural and ecologic spheres, and the relation between those fields and cultural-led events of foreign initiative, of which Waking Life is part of. For instance, the influence that the festival has on its surroundings, which can be the development of the land where the festival happens every year, but also the relation and connections between the festival and the town of Crato, the nearby entity administrating the land. The report will also analyses the specifies of Waking Life and what makes the festival different compared to other music festivals. A clear understanding of the festival’s artistic offer as well as the atmosphere aimed to be created will be the base of the study. The aim of the internship by itself was for me to get involved in the operational management of the festival, specifically regarding the camping site and its infrastructures. The main tasks where focused on working with local suppliers to sell various Portuguese products at the shop located on the camping area, as well as developing a project together with festival-goes in the place of the Creative Camps, where attendees of the festival where encouraged to create their own artistic projects within the boundaries of the camping area. The first part of the report will serve as an understanding of the sociological and economical situations of the rural areas as well as exploring the solutions – might they be already existing or not – and their nature to tackle the issues. In a second instance, the research will examine the phenomenon of so-called ‘music festivals’ and how they differ from ‘traditional’ festivals. Furthermore, the analysis will explore the different appealing aspects of the festivals to understand their popularity and how they can contribute to proposing different experiences to their crowd as well as the people involved internally and externally. In the second main part of the research, the report will focus on Waking Life festival and its characteristics which define the festival and differentiate it from other festival entities. Finally, the report will focus on the internship experience and reflect on the regenerative processes through it, before concluding with observations and results drawn from the experience in relation with the initial topic of the research.

98
China Times released a series of in-depth reporting articles named ‘Enthusiasm of Festivals in Taiwan’ in 2006. The articles indicated some obstacles of festivals and events in Taiwan, and raised extensive discussions. In the article, Yi-Lan International Folklore and Folkgame Festival was indicated as a remarkable case study, especially its success on uniting the local community, bringing in the crowd, and to the extent, creating profitable benefits. However, in 2007, this extraordinary festival that had held 12 years in Taiwan was suddenly suspended, and such sudden movement left a big question mark in the public. This case study focuses on finding the predicaments challenging festivals in Taiwan. The study is divided into two sections. First section is “academic research”, provides literature reviews on the development of cultural policy and related study. Second section is “in-depth reporting”, named ‘The Life and Death of Yi-Lan International Folklore and Folkgame Festival’. The research results indicate five predicaments challenging festivals in Taiwan. First, the paradox between culture and economy. Second, the sway of governmental policy. Third, the gap between opposed political parties. Fourth, the disorder of festival essence. Fifth, excessively reliance on media resources.

Abstract:
This thesis explores legitimacy and legitimation strategies for resource acquisition using a life cycle approach in the festival and events context. A review of the extant festival and event’s research, suggests this topic is significantly under-covered. For further theoretical development the thesis reviewed the literatures of resource acquisition, with particular attention to resource dependency theory, and institutional theory, with its sub-topic legitimacy. Using an exploratory qualitative case study method, the researcher investigated eight festivals and analyzed them in terms of their efforts to build legitimacy at different stages of their life cycle. The author confirmed earlier research on sources of legitimacy that include, regulatory, pragmatic, normative, and cognitive types, and that four general strategies, conformance, selection, manipulation, and creation are used to achieve legitimacy from these sources. The data in this thesis also suggests that the stage of the festival’s life cycle serves as an important extension to the literature's previously established process model of resource acquisition and legitimacy, including a legitimacy threshold. The thesis concludes with a summary of the findings, limitations of the study, and by suggesting possibilities for future research.

Abstract:
99
Among Taiwan’s music festivals,“Formoz Festival”, which started from 1995, has recorded the musical memories of fans and the development of Taiwan’s indie music. However, in 2009, the host declared the halt of Formoz Festival suddenly, which made every participant sob extremely. The halt showed that hosting a musical festival seemed not just ideal Utopia imagination, but had to be faced with various difficulties under different space and time. “Formoz Festival”started from the establishment of“Rock Union of the Northern Universities”, launched by a Fu Jen student, Hsu-heng-wei. He united the clubs of pop music in every university and held a concert in the square of NTU for free. After Hsu-heng-wei took military service in 1998, Lin-chang-tso (Freddy) took charge of this annual concert. He changed its name into“Taiwan’s Musical Revolutionists”and connected the musical groups in different locations in Taiwan by the internet. In 2000, the name of the festival shifted into“Taiwan Rock Alliance”. Formoz Festival hosted successively in the square of NTU, the square of Taipei fine arts museum, and Taipei City Hall. Finally it was held in Taipei children’s recreation center and enlarged its scale to carnivals step by step. To the musical fans of every generation, these memories, no matter the humble concerts but with great passion held in Da-An Forest Park long time ago, or the luxurious design of the stage, which made it like a carnival these years, impressed deeply the fans of different generations. “Formoz Festival”, which existed from 1995 to 2008, indeed recorded the bands around the millennium and the youth of every musical fan. It was not only the cradle of Taiwan underground groups and connected the common spirits of musical fans, but also drew out the musical picture of Formoz generations. This reports aims to investigate the development of this fourteen-year festival by visiting those participants and to grasp the generation picture by comparing Formoz Festival and those overboard musical fans.

Small, Katie E., University of Western Sydney, College of Business, and School of Marketing. "Understanding the social impacts of festivals on communities." 2007. http://handle.uws.edu.au:8081/1959.7/37653.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to understand the social impacts that festivals have on their host communities. It focuses on community festivals as one type of event which have a particularly strong connection to their host community. Community festivals are traditionally organised by and for the local community, and often celebrate a theme that has developed from within the community itself. Community festivals provide members of a community with opportunities to engage in socialisation, entertainment and the establishment of social networks, which can contribute to the enhancement of community cohesion and the building of social capital within a community. Additionally, they can provide tourism benefits such as increased visitation and promotion of a destination’s image. However, there is the potential for negative social impacts to result from the hosting of a festival, including traffic congestion, overcrowding, vandalism and increased antisocial behaviour. This thesis seeks to understand the perceived social impacts of community festivals from the perspective of the resident population. Six important questions are addressed in this thesis: 1) what are the underlying dimensions of the social impacts of community festivals?; 2) what are a host community’s expectations and perceptions of the social impacts of a festival?; 3) are there distinct subgroups within a community who differ in their feelings towards a festival?; 4) do these subgroups hold differing perceptions of the social impacts of community festivals?; 5) can the Social Impact Perception (SIP) scale be used to measure residents’ perceptions of the social impacts of community festivals?; and 6) what are the implications of this research for the planning and management of future community festivals? In order to explore these issues, this study draws on literature from the areas of tourism and sociology. It is from the tourism literature, more specifically on events, that community festivals are introduced as the focus of this thesis. The sociological literature on communities reinforces the importance of the ‘community’ in community festivals, and examines the role that festivals can play in contributing to community development, community wellbeing and the enhancement of social capital. Two community festivals were studied, one in Western Australia and the other in Victoria, Australia. Data were collected from residents in each of these two communities at one point in time following the staging of their festival. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used, including semi-structured interviews, focus groups, observational techniques, document analysis and a residents’ perceptions questionnaire. The results revealed that there are distinct subgroups within a community who choose to be involved with their festival in a range of ways and who perceive the social impacts resulting from the festival quite differently. These subgroups have been labelled the tolerators, economically connected, attendees, avoiders and volunteers. Whilst holding varied perceptions of the positive and negative nature of the impacts and levels at which they occur, residents perceive the social impacts of community festivals to occur within six impact dimensions: inconvenience, community identity and cohesion, personal frustration, entertainment and socialisation opportunities, community growth and development, and behavioural consequences. Those residents who participate in the festival, either as volunteers or attendees, tend to be those who are most positive about the festival and its impacts. This participation in the community provides opportunities for social transactions, relationship building and the development of social networks, which in turn have positive outcomes for community wellbeing and the development of social capital. This research has a number of implications for the management of future community festivals, in respect to providing a better understanding of residents’ perceptions of the social impacts a festival creates; towards better satisfying the diverse needs of distinct community subgroups; and related to how festivals can be used to contribute to community wellbeing and the enhancement of social capital.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Abstract:
97
Based on the theory of front stage and back stage, this research examines the Taroko Tribal Music Festival and distinguishes the front stage presented to the audience from the back stage where performers practice, prepare for performances and live. This study aims to investigate into the empowerment and coordination of the Uyas community and cultural representations in their performances. The research field included the Uyas community near the Taroko National Park and the front/back stages of the Tribal Music Festival. With ethnographical methods, the researcher gained access into the back stage and discovered that two church followers cooperated in the back stage preparation, while the churches conducted performance trainings and coordinated the performers. The young and the old in the Uyas community all participated in the performances to pass down the Truku cultural traditions and identies, to gain skills and empowerment, to spend leisure time and to earn money. With this study, the researcher not only suggests that the Uyas community revise and improve their performances, but also expects the administrators of the Taroko National Park to take concern for the coordination in the front/back stages of the Taroko Tribal Music Festival.

LeFlore, Elizabeth Hawthorne 1972. "The force of devotion : performing a transnational spirituality." 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/18447.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores the role of popular religion in a transnational community by examining the performance of devotion to local patron saints, virgin mothers and sacred crosses. Annually in May, Empalme Escobedo, Guanajuato, Mexico celebrates San Isidro Labrador (the patron saint of farmers), Maria Auxiliadora (the patroness of railroad laborers) and the Santa Cruz de Picacho (Sacred Cross of Picacho). Following the celebrations many of the male participants in the fiestas travel to Texas to work in agriculture or the service industry. Consequently, devotion to the saint(s) moves with migrants back and forth across the Mexican-U.S. border. My thesis is that the force of devotion gives voice to the tension between the desire for solidarity (experienced through fiesta performance) and the erosion of the community by migration (experienced as absence and dissolution). What I call the force of devotion refers to the social processes, expressive culture, continuity and change that make up a transnational community's system of beliefs and practices and enable folks to understand, explain or cope with everyday life. The force of devotion is the key analytic frame through which I interpret the articulations of spirituality and popular religion, impermanence and fragmentation, absence and hope. The central questions posed in this dissertation emerge from the stories folks in Empalme Escobedo tell about their lives. Consultants talk about their devotion as an expression of faith, a necessary guidance through daily life and a symbol of hope. Tracking the force of devotion exposes social relationships, emotional and intimate experiences, desires and fears. Memory of and participation in the fiestas not only symbolize the force of devotion, but also serve as a connection to separated family members and place of origin. The everyday reality of the absence of loved ones and the fragmentation of the community as a result of migration amplifies the human desire for sociability and solidarity. The fiesta performance provides a space in which the consciousness of communal boundaries is heightened, thereby confirming and strengthening the experience of the social and the force of devotion.
text

Abstract:
93
In the past decade cultural events has become a popular method of local industry, tourist promotion, and cultural governance. All kinds of forms as festival, ceremony, or carnival flow in the city, Taipei, which is full of consumer imagination and heterogeneous culture. Cultural events are viewed as the surface of city, reflecting vague images of cultural life in Taipei. Illustrated with four events in August, 2004—Multi-People Carnival, Taipei Art Festival, Plaza Festival and Migration Music Festival, the research is aimed to present the content of cultural life in specific space-time with those little narratives of culutral events from citizen’s viewpoint. By means of personal conservation, text-analysis, and in-depth interview, I found a sophisticated system of strategy behind the surface, which involves power relations between citizens, agents, and the unknown voyeur. Different kinds of gaze as the mirror image between subject and city space, the value-manipulation by agents, and the discipline of power, intertwine with each other. Consequently most cultural events fail to connect with everyday life as well as to reflect citizen’ real demand for cultural life. While people are acting and moving in the city, the intermingled representation system becomes a cultural battle. Cultural events play the role of an interface between citizens’ perception and the city. In the trajectories of rest and wander, Citizens develop personal tactics in the meantime. Through the space-writing of cultural events, participatory bodies keep accumulating the meaning of city space. In the face of heteroglossia in Taipei, the research points out that the performativity of cultural events must be pinned down to the context of local culture and citizen’s life and strengthened connection with time/space of the city. Concerning numbers of cultural events coming up, only when the focus is returned to citizen’s vision field and contact zone, can the city’s screen mirror a clear image of Taipei culture life.

Full text
Abstract:
While there is a fair amount of work on determinants of demand for the live performing arts, results have often been contradictory with little explanatory power. This may be because of the difficulty in describing the attributes of a performance, particularly in terms of its quality, and the heterogeneity of consumer preferences. This article uses conjoint analysis, also called choice experiments, to investigate the impact of the attributes of live theatre performances on demand, using data collected from 483 randomly chosen attenders at live theatre performances at the 2008 South African National Arts Festival. Attributes include the type of cast (professional, semi-professional or amateur), reputation of the producer/director, the context or setting, production type and ticket price of the show. Results largely support the a priori expectations based on the results of other demand studies. For example, it is found that the age of consumers affects the type of show chosen, that utility and willingness to pay increase for shows with professional and semi-professional casts and that 93% of the potential audience prefer shows with a South African context. It is concluded that the method could prove useful to both event organisers and policy makers, especially where the goal is to broaden access to the arts.

Abstract:
The ancient Egyptians were famous for their exotic and luxury perfumes in the ancient world, even having cities that specialised in perfume production in the Ptolemaic Period, when they exported these perfumes all over the Mediterranean. They produced these perfumes, and other scented preparations, from aromatic plants, fats and oils. The deities were fragrant beings, imbued with the divine essence, and perfume was considered by the Egyptians to be the sweat of the god Ra. Some deities were specially linked to perfume, one of the most important being Nefertem, god of perfume and of the primordial fragrant blue lotus flower. Incense was to the Egyptians the ‘eye of Horus’, burnt as an offering to the deities in temples. Aromatic plant material was stored in perfume/unguent ‘laboratories’, and perfumers’ workshops produced the precious perfumed oils and unguents, used in the funerary context, rituals, ceremonies, festivals and banquets.
History
M.A.

The subject of this dissertation thesis is investigating the issue of the German ethnic group status in inter-war Czechoslovakia shown in the example of the Nejdek political district with the emphasis on the major and crucial aspects of social life - politics, economic and social issues while the assistance and support elements include: demographics, border issues, the presence of the Czech ethnic group, a preview of own (German) history and the development of churches and religion. The Nejdek political district is set within a framework of regional history with regard to the historical context of the development of Czechoslovakia, or even of the world in some cases. The regional history presented here in the form of a probe from the perspective of great historical events and partly through micro-history aim to build on the broad source base and capture the impacts and effects of national policies on shaping of the Nejdek region and its inhabitants.
