Abstract:
Photography emerges in the 19th century, as a consequence of industrialization and, as a new fashion of expression, stimulates new ways of thinking and producing images. In the beginning of the 20th century, inspired by studies on photographic sequences, the cinema is born. Both languages are the result of the modern scenario (technological development, industrial expansion and mass culture) and boosted the creation of new means for communication. In this context a brand-new media is created: magazines illustrated with photographs. This way of printing first appeared in Europe, after World War I ended, and spread all over the world driven by the rise of totalitarian systems, forcing people into exile, helping to sow the ideas of the new media. Based on visibility as the main vehicle of speech, they established photojournalism as a communication tool. Life, possibly the most famous illustrated American magazine in the world, was launched in 1936. Its editing design was based in the European models favoring the broadcast of information through photo coverage. Because they favor the visual communication, the illustrated magazines are considered the connecting link between photography and cinema. The present thesis proposes to analyze the general features of Life magazine and to debate the visual codes that connect the ways of communication between photo-reportage and cinematography.

Lewis, Kathryn L. "Imaging the Early Cold War: Photographs in Life Magazine, 1945-1954." VCU Scholars Compass, 2015. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/3765.

Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes Life’s early coverage of the Cold War (1945-1954) in order to explicate this publication’s creation and reinforcement of prescriptive attitudes about this ideological engagement through photographically illustrated news. By uncovering Life’s editorial approach this project proposes a new diagnostic for evaluating documentary images by re-configuring Hayden White’s incisive theory of emplotment—the process of engendering historical narratives with meaning— through semiotic models proposed by Louis Hjelmslev and Roland Barthes, thereby offering a useful tool for future scholars to re-examine modern media’s transition towards prizing visual immediacy over critical engagement. Life’s editors’ link narrative devices and rhetoric with photographs to make these images appear as first-hand experience and function as objective conclusions. Life characterizes the Cold War as an epic moral struggle between the US and USSR, and its 1943 special issue on Russia acts as the comedic prologue to this narrative by distinguishing these ideologically disparate wartime allies. After post-war agreements fail, this congenial atmosphere swiftly transitions into another battle between democracy and tyranny, defined through literary conventions. Life employs synecdoche and allegory to encode photographs of individuals as icons of valorous populations (Americans and Eastern Europeans) and to symbolize concepts (democracy and charity). Metonymy and irony transform photographs into direct signs of Communism and visual evidence of its degeneracy. Life’s comic presentation of Marshal Josip Tito contrasts with its satiric coverage of Senator Joseph McCarthy to direct readers’ attention towards the best and worst possible courses of action regarding the Communist menace, at home and abroad.

Abstract:
This dissertation investigates the artistic and linguistic strategies employed by the Kenyan literary magazine Kwani? during a period of intense social and political upheaval. Between the peaceful end of Daniel Arap Moi's dictatorship in 2002 and the violence that followed the contested Presidential elections of 2007, writers for the magazine used a language called sheng&mdasha youth-affiliated urban slang comprised of a complex, rapidly shifting blend of Kiswahili, English, and other local languages&mdashto negotiate between the global hunger for English and their country's complex cultural, political, and linguistic demands. The dissertation builds on a growing body of scholarship in literary criticism, linguistics, and cultural studies to document sheng's emergence as a literary idiom within Kenya, as well as the way it evolved as it traveled beyond the country's borders via inclusion in primarily English-language texts such as Uwem Akpan's short story collection Say You're One of Them.

Norman, Nathaniel Don. "From a Record of Death to a Memory of Life: The Rise of the Biographical Obituary in The Gentleman's Magazine." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/32008.

Full text
Abstract:
The need for an examination of the rise of various journalistic and print forms in The Gentleman's Magazine is evident from the absence of scholarship in this area. One of the most important forms born in The Gentleman's Magazine is the obituary. Beginning as a sparse list of deaths appended to the back of each issue of the magazine, it came to occupy a larger role in the publication within a hundred years of its inception. My study proposes to examine the reasons for this shift, focusing on the rise of the biographical form as it is treated in the works of Samuel Johnson, a prominent contributor to The Gentleman's Magazine, and practiced at the hands of John Nichols, one of the magazine's most prominent editors. My study also seeks to characterize the content of the obituaries by historicizing them in the context of the period and within the confines of the editorial policies of the magazine itself. The magazine's editorial persona, Sylvanus Urbanus, provides general terms whereby the dead may be characterized. Ultimately, my study is interested in examining the representations of the deceased in the obituary form as social markers, that are necessary for understanding how groups and individuals represented society.

Abstract:
As a leading 20 Century American photojournalism magazine, Life benefits from a prestigious aura turning it into an iconic entity — in press history, scholars usually refer to Life as a paragon of picture magazine when in the meantime Life plays a part in collective history as a Visual record of 20th Century American society -. The first part of this doctoral dissertation dedicated to examining the historiography of Life, explores the emblematic status held by Life, both on the academic field of press history and American studies. As a mainstream culture artifact, and under the impulsion of the counterculture of the 1960s, Life has largely been criticized for being a conservative media. Due to a dissatisfaction with the ideological critique towards Life — which often reduces the study of its editorial content to political issues — the second part of this work focuses on Life's editorial practices, so as to understand how its news content serves the establishment of a Visual culture, rather than offers a sole political statement. These first two parts are preliminary to the main purpose of this doctoral dissertation, which is to identify and analyze the main stakes that are raised when considering Life as a cultural artifact. Thus, the scope of the third part is to investigate Life's use of photography as means to celebrate and evaluate the cultural references the magazine highlights. The corpus of this investigation is a series of case studies, based on a selection of photo-essays published in Life during the early 1950s, when the magazine reached its golden age, so as to revisit this overrated area

Cochran, Sharayah. "An Impossible Alternative: Orientalism and Margaret Bourke-White's "A Moneylender's House" (1947)." VCU Scholars Compass, 2015. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/3760.

Full text
Abstract:
Between 1946 and 1948, American photographer Margaret Bourke-White traveled to India while on assignments for Life magazine. Since the late 1940s, a photograph from these assignments that depicts three men sitting in an ornately decorated room has appeared in several publications and exhibitions under variations of the title A Moneylender’s House (1947). Though Bourke-White is traditionally categorized as a documentary photojournalist, her photograph exhibits motifs similar to those seen in European Orientalist paintings from the nineteenth century. Considering recent scholarship that has expanded the temporal and geographical parameters of the Orientalist photography genre, this thesis analyzes the “documentary” photograph, A Moneylender’s House, in its varied exhibition and publication contexts to determine whether they present the photographic subjects from a “nonrepressive and nonmanipulative perspective” (one that Edward Said suggests might provide an “alternative” to Orientalism), or reinforce the “Self/Other” binary at the core of Orientalism.

Using reports sent by readers - that start to work as collaborators - and placed an order of the media discourse, the publication focuses on success stories about weight loss practices, associating them to a discourser of overcoming and self-esteem linked to ideal body image. The study analyzed how the diets discourse regiment woman around an aesthetic pattern on the thin body, and thus, as the magazine "Sou+Eu!" built knowledge about the female, reinforcing the place of media in current production of subjectivities. The approach of this research was the sociology of everyday life and the method of procedure was the analysis of media discourse and its implications for female subjectivity. Evidencing the social forms, the study of everyday life becomes effective to insinuate (instead of conceptualizing) and demonstrate (rather than explain) the complexities and subtleties of journalism and its influence on contemporary society, in which appearance and visibility are based on the tonic of daily living. Key-words: Media. Everyday life. Feminine subjectivity. Discourse. Magazine.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to assess potential environmental impacts of electronic media distribution and consumption—from a life cycle perspective—as compared to those of print media. The thesis consists of a cover essay and two papers appended at the end of the thesis. The cover essay summarizes the papers and puts them in context. The main objectives of the thesis are twofold: to assess potential environmental impacts of production and consumption of tablet editions of magazines from a life cycle perspective (Paper I), and to compare potential environmental impacts of a magazine’s print edition with that of its tablet edition (Paper II). The thesis examines the following specific research questions: (1) What are the main environmental impacts of print and tablet editions? (2) Which activities are giving rise to the main environmental impacts of the print and tablet editions? (3) What are the key factors influencing these impacts? (4) What are major data gaps and uncertainties? Based on the present assessment, it is clear that for the print magazine, pulp and paper production is the principal cause of most of the potential environmental impacts. For this reason, the use of recycled paper, rather than virgin fiber, in newsprint production may considerably offset environmental impacts. For the tablet edition, the content production dominates the potential environmental impacts when readers are few. This appears to be the case in an emerging state of the magazine, but with distribution of more media products to smaller groups of people, this may persist for “mature” products as well. As the number of tablet readers grows, more of the environmental impact of the is due to manufacturing of the device and electronic distribution. However, content production may still be a major factor, depending on the specific environmental impacts studied.

Nesse sentido, o objetivo principal do trabalho diz respeito a duas questões encadeadas.
This research investigates magazines as a communication medium and as a journalistic product. Despite being present in a series of studies, magazines are still not thought of as a central object of reflection within the fields of Journalism and of Communication Studies. In this sense, the main objective of this study concerns two interconnected questions. The first deals with a comprehension of the magazine by itself, seeking to understand how the product engenders and incorporates particular communicative and journalistic processes. The second question, empirically focusing on this point, discusses this particular process according to one publication, the magazine Vida Simples published by Editora Abril. Considering the theme of quality of life, which the magazine deals with and the mannerisms present in the encounter between its themes and specific journalistic practices and structures, the study here analyzes the editorial constitution of the publication and the concomitant establishment of a meaning about living well in society. In order to support the analytic course of this study, questions about the magazine and its journalistic style guide the study, seeking to conceptualize the particularity of the magazine beyond the themes it specializes in. Furthermore, the study contextualizes the magazine delimiting the role of how it historically matured into formulating its own characteristics and indicating how the encounter with the theme of quality of life agrees with certain market and social logics of the segmentation and mediatization of the contemporary scenario. In theoretical terms, the study deals with aspects that lead to a reflection in the direction of the tension between social reality and the magazines own style, intertwined by issues related to how journalism belongs to the present, how it deals with certain information demands and how it builds a specific type of knowledge about the world. From the systematic observation of the editorial projects and images of the contents worked on by the magazine and of the editorials published monthly, such as letters to the readers, one can draw reflections that reveal the magazine?s globality, conveying a movement that gives it a singularity we are calling revistação.

Ahmadi, Achachlouei Mohammad. "Exploring the Effects of ICT on Environmental Sustainability: From Life Cycle Assessment to Complex Systems Modeling." Doctoral thesis, KTH, Miljöstrategisk analys (fms), 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-171443.

Full text
Abstract:
The production and consumption of information and communication technology (ICT) products and services continue to grow worldwide. This trend is accompanied by a corresponding increase in electricity use by ICT, as well as direct environmental impacts of the technology. Yet a more complicated picture of ICT’s effects is emerging. Positive indirect effects on environmental sustainability can be seen in substitution and optimization (enabling effects), and negative indirect effects can be seen in additional demand due to efficiency improvements (rebound effects). A variety of methods can be employed to model and assess these direct and indirect effects of ICT on environmental sustainability. This doctoral thesis explores methods of modeling and assessing environmental effects of ICT, including electronic media. In a series of five studies, three methods were at times applied in case studies and at others analyzed theoretically. These methods include life cycle assessment (LCA) and complex systems modeling approaches, including System Dynamics (SD) and agent-based (AB) modeling. The first two studies employ the LCA approach in a case study of an ICT application, namely, the tablet edition of a Swedish design magazine. The use of tablets has skyrocketed in recent years, and this phenomenon has been little studied to date. Potential environmental impacts of the magazine’s tablet edition were assessed and compared with those of the print edition. The tablet edition’s emerging version (which is marked by a low number of readers and low reading time per copy) resulted in higher potential environmental impacts per reader than did the print edition. However, the mature tablet edition (with a higher number of readers and greater reading time per copy) yielded lower impacts per reader in half the ten impact categories assessed. While previous studies of electronic media have reported that the main life-cycle contributor to environmental impacts is the use phase (which includes operational electricity use as well as the manufacture of the electronic device), the present study did not support those findings in all scenarios studied in this thesis. Rather, this study found that the number of readers played an important role in determining which life-cycle phase had the greatest impacts. For the emerging version, with few readers, content production was the leading driver of environmental impacts. For the mature version, with a higher number of readers, electronic storage and distribution were the major contributors to environmental impacts. Only when there were many readers but low overall use of the tablet device was the use phase the main contributor to environmental impacts of the tablet edition of the magazine. The third study goes beyond direct effects at product- and service-level LCAs, revisiting an SD simulation study originally conducted in 2002 to model indirect environmental effects of ICT in 15 European countries for the period 2000-2020. In the current study, three scenarios of the 2002 study were validated in light of new empirical data from the period 2000–2012. A new scenario was developed to revisit the quantitative and qualitative results of the original study. The results showed, inter alia, that ICT has a stimulating influence on total passenger transport, for it makes it more cost- and time-efficient (rebound effects). The modeling mechanism used to represent this rebound effect is further investigated in the fourth study, which discusses the feedback loops used to model two types of rebound effects in passenger transport (direct economic rebound and time rebound). Finally, the role of systems thinking and modeling in conceptualizing and communicating the dynamics of rebound effects is examined. The aim of the fifth study was to explore the power of systems modeling and simulation to represent nonlinearities of the complex and dynamic systems examined elsewhere in this thesis. That study reviews previous studies that have compared the SD and AB approaches and models, summarizing their purpose, methodology, and results, based on certain criteria for choosing between SD and AB approaches. The transformation procedure used to develop an AB model for purposes of comparison with an SD model is also explored. In conclusion, first-order or direct environmental effects of ICT production, use, and disposal can be assessed employing an LCA method. This method can also be used to assess second-order or enabling effects by comparing ICT applications with conventional alternatives. However, the assessment of enabling effects can benefit from systems modeling methods, which are able to formally describe the drivers of change, as well as the dynamics of complex social, technical, and environmental systems associated with ICT applications. Such systems methods can also be used to model third-order or rebound effects of efficiency improvements by ICT.

Abstract:
This thesis studies five mainstream British weekly magazines: 'Time and Tide', the 'Nation and Athenaeum', the 'Spectator', the 'Listener', and the 'New Statesman'. It explores how these magazines reviewed, discussed and analysed modernist literature over an eighteen-year span, 1920-37. Over this period, and in these magazines, the concept of modernism developed. Drawing on work by philosopher Ian Hacking, this research traces how the idea of modernism emerged into the public realm. It focuses largely on the book reviews printed in these magazines, texts that played an important and underappreciated role in negotiations between modernist texts and the audience of these magazines. Chapter 1, on 'Time and Tide', covers a period from the magazine's inception in 1920 to 1926, and draws particularly on Catherine Clay's work on this magazine. It discusses the genre of 'weekly review' that this new magazine attempted to join, and the cultural place of modernism in the early 1920s. Chapter 2, on the 'Nation and Athenaeum', covers Leonard Woolf's literary editorship (1923-30), under the ownership of J. M. Keynes, and makes use of Keynes's archive at King's College, Cambridge, and Woolf's at the University of Sussex. Chapter 3, on the 'Spectator', covers Evelyn Wrench's editorship (1925-32), and explores the relationship between this magazine, ideologies of conservatism, and modernism. Chapter 4, on the 'Listener', focuses on the magazine's publication of new poetry, including an extraordinary 1933 supplement that printed W. H. Auden's 'The Witnesses'. This work revolves around Janet Adam Smith, literary editor in these years, and draws on Smith's archive at the National Library of Scotland as well as the BBC archives at Caversham. Chapter 5, on the 'New Statesman' in the 1930s under new editor Kingsley Martin, explores a period when modernism was more widely recognized, and pays particular attention to a short text by James Joyce printed in 1932, 'From a Banned Writer to a Banned Singer'.

Ogawa-Yukitomo, Nicole S. "Japanese Office Ladies: A Life of Luxury." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2015. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/588.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is an initial attempt to investigate the relationship between the portrayal of Japanese OL or “Office Ladies” in different media: formal scholarly studies on OL and informal sources such as recruiting lectures, online articles, and Japanese magazines that target OL, specifically CanCam, Sweet, and JJ. The term OL has generally been used to describe a short-term low-paying clerical position, requiring minimal skills, for young women primarily age 20s to 30s. The OL position can thus be seen as a gendered profession with little corporate mobility. However, most of the websites and magazines for these working women feature articles on the latest styles and are full of fashionable attractive women advertising the latest designer goods and the up and coming designer must-have brands of the season. With the skyrocketing of the Japanese economy in the pose-WWII era, women have become the country’s primary consumers, and OL appear to be playing a central role in this new consumer-heavy culture. Thus using both scholarly and primary sources, this thesis will explore this gap between the reality of OL and the romanticized version portrayed in these magazines. Although scholarly sources often depict the OL lifestyle to be tedious, gendered, and overall unfavorable for workingwomen in Japan, my thesis hopes to explore the positive aspects of the OL lifestyle as well and examine the reasons why women buy into this OL culture via these magazines and sites.

Buaphet, Permtip. "Readers' real-life narratives in selected contemporary Thai and UK women's magazines : a comparative study." Thesis, University of York, 2014. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/6705/.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary aim of my study is to examine how readers’ real-life narratives in selected women’s magazines from the UK and Thailand construct women in these two different cultural contexts. My research provides an understanding of the social construction of women’s gendered identity in women’s personal stories in particular women’s magazines. This study is based on 84 issues of four magazines covering the period November 2010 – November 2011. Two of the magazines are from the UK and two are from Thailand: Woman; Woman and Home (the UK and Thai editions); and Poo Ying. These magazines were selected because they aim at a similar readership, women in their 30s and over. My analysis shows that the readers’ narratives in these four magazines centre predominantly on the following four topics, presented in terms of how prevalent they were: 1) confidence-building, 2) employment, 3) romantic relationships and marriage, and 4) family. These topics form the core of my analysis chapters. Altogether they reveal that women are constructed somewhat differently in the Thai and UK magazines in question. In the UK magazines, women were constructed as imperfect but improvable. Readers’ narratives had the function to suggest to actual readers of these narratives how they themselves might deal with similar issues. By contrast, women in the Thai magazines were normally constructed as ‘ideal’ in terms of already having achieved success. The readers were thus meant to admire the women whose stories were narrated since the women’s stories were presented as examples of an already achieved ‘ideal’ life. But there was no indication how this ideal was achieved. It thus represented a state rather than a process. The magazines provided testimony to the difference between Thai and British public culture in terms of what could and could not be talked about.

Aigner, Joachim Felix. "Environmental Implications of Media Consumption embedded in Digital Ecosystems : A bottom-up systems approach to the perennial case of paperless reading in Germany." Thesis, KTH, Hållbar utveckling, miljövetenskap och teknik, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-235724.

Full text
Abstract:
Digitalization has been reshaping the media landscape in recent years, often conveying an implicit promise of becoming less dependent on physical resources. At the same time, the current understanding of digital reading goes beyond dedicated e-readers or definable digital media products such as magazines or newspapers. In fact, it must be perceived as a function or service obtained from existing and ever-expanding “digital ecosystems”. There is furthermore a clear and unambiguous trend that relatively small and mobile devices are on the rise for consuming all kinds of media. Next to potentially enabling environmental gains compared to traditional paper-based media consumption, there are agreeing indications of a shift from overall electricity consumption dominated by end-user devices towards an increasing importance of less tangible data transmission networks and data centers. Therefore, a bottom-up analysis is deemed to compliment more general top-down observations and assessments. To this end, an elaborated reference scenario is proposed as to bridge the mere analytical method of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) with behavioral aspects based on German market observations and surveys. The prevailing aim of this study is to detect environmental hot-spots and absolute impacts linked to the service of accessing text-based content via connected electronic devices. In doing so, this study takes the position that both types of media consumption – digital and paper-based - are incommensurable due to the very evident differences in provided functions, markets, and industries. Therefore, an attributional and stand-alone LCA is considered appropriate. The perceived current situation (reference scenario) evolves around substantiated estimates and assumptions concerning production of devices, use of devices as well as operation of essential data transmission network components. Looking at potential hot-spots, electricity consumption linked to data transmission could be a decisive factor for the environmental performance of digital reading. However, the actual importance of data transmission infrastructures depends on both methodological choices and a range of parameters or trends. For instance, the relative importance is shifted when more recent estimates of electricity intensities are incorporated. Depending on actual and localized electricity intensity of data transmission, the amount of data required to provide an expected function may inhibit environmental potentials of digital media consumption. Postulating average annual consumption of digital contents and assuming actual substitution of equivalent printed media products, about 50 kg CO2-equivalents. could potentially be avoided. This theoretical potential is based on the calculated global warming potential (GWP) associated with digital reading according to the reference scenario which amounts to about 29 kg CO2-equivalents. Therefore, this study supports findings from previous studies that indicated environmental benefits of digital reading. Compared to other functions or services (e.g. video/music streaming, podcasts, audio books) embedded in the same “digital ecosystems”, reading requires little amount of data. If allocation of upstream effects is based on time, the relative importance of data transmission networks could be gauged and compared by adopting a “data-to-service time” ratio. Taking the reference scenario as a starting point, a perceivable ratio for digital reading is 0.015 GB/h, including systemic inefficiencies. In contrast, streaming of high-definition video contents can easily consume 3 GB/h, a 200-fold increase. The audience of this study comprises providers of digital reading services and/or other media services as well as end-users as integral element in “digital ecosystems”. Besides, the report proposes a conceptual assessment framework which can be applied to other contemporary digital services or functions.

Abstract:
In 1955, Edward Steichen organized the historic exhibition "The Family of Man" at the Museum of Modem Art (MoMA) in New York. Under the auspices of United States Information Agency, it was exhibited throughout the world and gained a mythic status. This dissertation looks beyond that myth, in order to present a reference document with background information not previously examined. It is based on the author's research involving personal interviews with photographers who contributed to the exhibition as well as the analysis of unpublished archival documents. Part 1 explores the MoMA's World War II programs that paved the way for "The Family of Man", Steichen's career and his role as director of the museum's photography department. Part II traces the origins of the project, showing Steichen's various collaborations through a thorough examination of his correspondence, his individual and group meetings with photographers, and, in particular, his decisive trip across Europe. Part III examines the methods and results of Steichen's work, as both photographer and editor. A discussion of the sources of "The Family of Man", mainly photojournalistic, illustrates the contours of press photography at the time followed by a synopsis of the exhibition and its international circulation, in several versions. This dissertation demonstrates how "The Family of Man" was a tour de force in the history of photography because of Steichen's ability to combine his innovative photographic and editing skills that exploited the medium to communicate a political agenda that is a reflection of a complex network of colleagues, friends and acquaintances from the world of photography and of politics

This dissertation is a study into the use of transmedia storytelling as practiced in Public Relations, analyzing the content produced by "Magazine Luiza" through the character of "Lu". Through content analysis and case studies, one observes how the story of the character flows between various kinds of digital media, and how this strategy of communication can be associated to Public Relations practices. The concept of transmedia storytelling establishes what Jenkins (2009) defines as a story which develops through multiple media platforms, with every new piece of context contributing in its own distinct and valuable ways to the whole. Analyzed mediums included the brand's website and blog, Facebook, Google+, Twitter, and Youtube.

Abstract: In modern society, the media play a central role in different sectors, since they appear as a fundamental tool for the exercise of citizenship and the dissemination of knowledge - a situation that is also verified in the fields of alimentation and nutrition . The topic of alimentation and nutrition is increasingly noticeable in various media: this presence has been valued for its potential to contribute to the promotion of healthy nutrition and health in general; however, it has also been questioned as to its credibility and adequacy which are often compromised by market influences (determined by the esthetic industry, for instance). Given these issues, this dissertation sought to analyze the quality of the content related to the topic of alimentation and nutrition in two online teen magazines - Todateen and Capricho. A qualitative research was performed using the Content Analysis method in combination with theoretical and conceptual frameworks of the Cultural Studies. The corpus for analysis consisted of 111 texts (68 texts of the online magazine Capricho and 43 texts of the online magazine Todateen). The corpus was selected by searching in the websites of the magazines Capricho and Todateen using keywords related to the topics of alimentation and nutrition, and we selected the time frame of one year (year 2012). The main results and analysis of the texts in the corpus were: celebrities were always the preferred sources of information; the main role of the sources was to report personal experiences; the approach was predominantly factual; the use of linguistic terms was inadequate and presented a loss of meaning; the occurrence of information promoting healthy nutrition practices was reduced; issues of public interest hardly entered on the agenda; the framework was characterized by the prevalence of a biological dimension for alimentation and nutrition with a focus on esthetics, and the concepts of alimentation and nutrition were more based on the idea of a restrictive diet than on healthy eating. These results allow us to affirm that the contents of the magazines analyzed do not present satisfactory quality and potential to contribute to alimentation and nutrition safety of adolescents

The present research constitutes a study about the discursive construction of feminine work based on written and imagetic texts published in Jornal das Mo?as (fifties of the twentieth century) and Claudia (from 2010 to 2015 of the twenty-first century) magazines. These magazines for women talk about subjects considered important to this public in their determined conditions of production. This theme is relevant because of the necessity of observing how it is constructed the discourse about women and work as well as it provides the opportunity to comprehend the reason why some discourses about the position women can/have to occupy in the society are reproduced/silenced nowadays, mainly concerning outdoor work. The theoretical scope of the research is centered on P?cheux?s Discourse Analyses, specially the studies of Orlandi (2007, 2015) and P?cheux (1993, 2006). Thus, some basic assumptions of this theory are relevant to this study, such as: imaginary, discursive and ideological formations, which guide what it is said about women in the magazines analyzed, as well as the already-said about women that composes the interdiscourse. Based on the corpus selected from Jornal das Mo?as and Claudia magazines, it was observed the discursive sequences and imagetic which relate women and work, applying the theoretic-methodological apparatus of P?cheux?s Discourse Analysis to this data. It is important to highlight that the results show that there is a difference on the construction of women in the magazines. While the publications from the fifties discursed women at home and in some professions which were in extension of the housework, Claudia magazine modifies the bias showing women in many professions, but still struggling for salary equality and for respect and appreciation when they occupy leadership positions in the companies. Although it is important to highlight that even when discursing the woman in different positions, the magazine, in the analyzed material, still give more emphasis to mother, wife and housewife positions, showing that the already-said about women from the most remote periods still resound in nowadays discourses, indicating that there is a tension between work and maternity.
XXI).

This study sought to understand present manifestations of cultural publications which pose an alternative to cultural journalism made by local traditional vehicles, so as to understand whether these publications produce a discourse on culture and everyday life different from the one produced by large media companies. To accomplish this, we chose as corpus four issues of Fome de Quê? (fmq?) magazine and seven issues of Cenário Cultural magazine, the main publications of this genre that circulate in the state of Paraíba showing the local culture and which are not connected to large communication companies. We analyze the characteristics of these two publications in order to understand which alternatives to the journalism model practiced by conventional vehicles are presented in these magazines. We focus our analysis on the way these magazines are organized as a communication vehicle and on the selection and approach of the guidelines, i. e., we observe how their organization modes, subjects, languages, agendas and goals, among other elements, combine in the creation of their discourse on the culture and the daily life they represent. The research approach was Everyday Life Sociology and the method of procedure was the formism. By highlighting the social forms, everyday life studies give us resources to analyze the parts, the alternative forms, in a context that does not favor the definition of the whole, in our case, the framing of the magazines as completely alternatives.

Working with reading and writing in contemporary times has been one of the great challenges for the language teacher. In this perspective, the purpose of this work was to present a pedagogical proposal, in the model of a didactic sequence, for the development of discursive skills related to reading and writing activities, using as a learning object the genre reportage transmitted in digital media. The subjects who participated in the development of this didactic sequence were students from the 8th grade class of a state school network located in a city in the interior of Bahia. Considering that one of the main events that characterize the current society are the advancement and diffusion of the digital technologies, it is observed the need to integrate the new technologies to the process of teaching and learning. However, it is important to emphasize that this integration must develop consciously and critically and, above all, present a pedagogical intentionality, since the use of technology in the classroom is not justified by itself. It is based on this pressing need that, through the didactic sequence proposed in this work, it was intended to provide practices for understanding and producing texts, culminating in the creation of an online magazine, the final product of this research. For that, the genre was mobilized, since reporting is a textual activity that is part of daily life and relevant in the journalistic sphere. The methodological procedures adopted in the study take into account the qualitative approach of the research, being ethnographic and of an applied nature. The basic theoretical assumptions involved the proposal of adaptation to the model of Dolz, Noverraz and Schneuwly (2004); The theory of Bakhtin and his Circle; Studies of authors of Textual Linguistics, as well as of different theoretical frameworks that deal with the study of writing and text. The results and conclusions reached above all show that it is possible to develop a didactic sequence that allows for the practice of comprehension and production of texts and the use of digital technologies as an instrument for acquiring information and for socializing the knowledge produced.

Abstract:

In the 1990s, an age of multiplicity and integration, individuals, materially satisfied, turn to seek for popularized living and the attention to individuality, while the grand environment heads towards narrowcasting, with continuous emergences of emphases on spirituality, individual consciousness, and non-mainstream trend of thoughts. Different minorities are infiltrated by all kinds of media, and terms like “independent music,” “independent bookstore,” and “independent magazine” correspondingly appear. Nevertheless, complete research on such issue has seldom been made. This research aims at: A) clarifying the definition and current status of independent magazine, B) analyzing existing independent art life magazine covers’ forms of visual representation, C) discussing the cover’s nature and its conformity with the spirit of publication, and D) exploring this genre’s future development as a reference for related research that ensues. In view of the purpose of this research, textual analysis and condition-surveying method are devoted to the observation of the current situation of Taiwanese independent magazines; the implication of which is defined with comparison method and its samples confirmed, induced and studied in accordance with their attributes. Moreover, with analysis tools generated through relevant theories’ examination, discussions of the representation of both forms and contents are conducted in light of cover images, colorations, texts, and formations. Based on the aforementioned, this research concludes that: 1. The cover design of independent magazines is fully immersed with magazine’s layout features, presenting its cover images with photographs—followed by illustrations and collage—as the response to independent magazines’ emphasis on real-life issues and regional reports. Only few of them disobey regular magazine layouts and present their unique visual vocabulary with pure artistic expression and unstable patterns. 2. It is concluded that fourteen independent magazines share the function of conveying their contents, while their differences lie in the degree of deviation in expression—which is embedded with semantic ambiguity. Their contents can be classified as regional, realistic portrait, and presentation which emphasizes issues of selfness and livelihood. 3. These fourteen magazines struggle through the ideal and the real. They constitute a trend of the publication of magazines by means of subdivisions of themes, self-related concerns, and individualized presentations. At the age of “civilian idol”, they move from collective standardization towards individual uniqueness. Movements as the 2012 “Minor Magazines’ Counterattack” signify a growing voice which may possibly transgresses the boundary between the mainstream and its counterpart; both of which exist and move forwards, while the so-called definition of independence may eventually be a concept and course in spirit.

Abstract:
The thesis "A content analysis of photographs in Pestry tyden and LIFE magazine" analyses two successful magazines of the first half of the 20th century. Intentionally, two periodicals of different origin (Czechoslovakia and the United States) are compared to investigate the assumption that the different origin has major influence on the overall concept and focus of the periodicals. The subject of this study is the selection of volumes of 1937-1945, the period of the greatest success of both magazines. The study aims not only at describing the contents of the periodicals but also at situating them into social, political and art-historical context. The study is based on a theoretical part which gives a general overview of photojournalism and tracks the slow beginning of journalistic photography and the birth of the first illustrated magazines. This part also deals with technological development which made possible quality image journalism. The study does not leave out numerous restrictions, e. g. censorship, which were a frequent point of struggle for the magazines' authors. Key words: illustrated magazines, magazine photography, photojournalism, documentary photography, war photography, censorship, propaganda

Abstract:
______________________________________________________________________________

This research emphasizes on analyzing the advertisements and the images in the magazine Linglong to see how it built up the “modern” life in Shanghai in 1930. Instead of tending to represent the reality of that specific time, the studies of decoding the picture and the discourse which are the most fundamental elements of a myth, became the first aim of the author. In other words, it’s the process of giving a birth to a myth drawing the best attention of the author. From the viewpoint of post-colonialism, Homi. Bhabha’s mimicry theory is believed to have a better interpretation of this half-colonized city, Shanghai, showing people how this legendary metropolis bowed to the Western cultural hegemony, and then, combined with their own traditions and customs to develop the distinguishing characteristic of a city. In the meantime, some other works of literature and of cinema are also highly considered in order to have a more complete vision of the mass media in 1930 towards this particular moment. In conclusion, it will be more significant to transmit the interaction between China and Western to Taiwan and China in the future study.
