Withdrawal of life support therapy involves controlled removal of life support modalities including artificial respiration and circulation with intent to provide a comfortable death. Withdrawal of life support therapy is necessary prior to procedures such as organ donation after cardio-circulatory death, but remains poorly explored in current literature. To enhance the current evidence, we conducted a thorough structured review, an observational study, and a qualitative comparison of components comprising withdrawal of life support therapy in both donor and non-donor patient groups. Many older youth in foster care lack adequate resources and ongoing support in their social networks as they transition into young adulthood, while other youth in these circumstances experience stable social networks providing comprehensive support. Systematically measuring the supportive personal and service-oriented relationships in youth networks expands the scope of inquiry in this area by identifying patterns of social network structure, member composition, and relational qualities that are associated with more or less support provision through formal and informal relationships. Abstract:
Supporting body weight and balance control are foundations of our ability to move and function independently. However, neurological disease, injury, and aging often threaten these prerequisites of functional independence, leading to a decrease in quality of life. In the United States alone, 7.5 million individuals have survived stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), or spinal cord injury (SCI), and over a million new patients are diagnosed every year [1–2]. To improve gait function in these patient populations, partial body weight-supported gait training is a widely-used rehabilitation therapy.

Mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices such as the ventricular assist devices (VADs) provide life saving short-term bridge-to-transplant solutions (1) to a large proportion of patients who suffer from chronic heart failure. Although hemodynamically efficient, such devices are burdened with high incidence of thromboembolic events due to non-physiological flow past constricted geometries where platelets (the principal cellular clotting elements in blood) are exposed to elevated shear stresses and exposure times (2) — requiring mandatory anticoagulation.
