Abstract:
The topic of this thesis is Liferay Portal, which is a technology based on Java programming language and portlet applications. The technology is not well known among developers despite of the fact that the usage of this technology is quite common in the commercial sphere. The main aim of the thesis is to create a suite of procedures and hints in order to facilitate portlet development for beginners, who are planning to use technologies Spring framework and AngularJS. The secondary objectives include defining the paradigm related to portlet development, analysing portal specifics and its benefits, describing the Liferay Portal from different viewpoints, to compare Liferay to competitive solutions and finally creation, de-velopment and documenting of the application composed of 2 portlets. The main functio-nality of these portlets is Personal Financial Management. Aims were achieved by obtaining information from the community of developers and from sources listed in the bibliography. Information obtained in the area of development was empirically verified using the developed application. There is a proposed procedure in the thesis in case of using the AngularJS technology in the area of portlet development and common issues related to this usage. The thesis consists of theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part deals with portals as such, mentions the market share, Java Portlet Specifications (JSR-168 and JSR-286) and defines the portlet development paradigm. The practical part of the thesis documents basic procedures necessary for portlet development with the option of using of AngularJS fra-mework and finally it documents the developed application from perspectives of the design and usage. The added value of this thesis is the intelligible guide how to start with development of portlets for Liferay Portal. The most important benefit is the guide created to simplify the usage of the AngularJS framework on the client side of the portlet (in the browser), becau-se usage in the common manner is not possible. The outcome and also the benefit is also the created application, which can be used in order to manage user´s expenses and incomes and which has already been used by the author for this purpose.

Abstract:
The goal of this Bachelor project was to develop the Sundsvall42 website, whose name originates from the conference held in week 42 and during whichall the IT-companies in Sundsvall gather and hold a number of different lectures. The website has been designed to accommodate both speakers and partipicants. All partipicants and lecturers will receive a personalized page inwhich there are a number of functions which are available for use, including ablog for each workshop and a calendar. The program used to create this isLiferay and the operating system is Linux. The entire website is encoded usingLiferay and Java, but the website is not adapted for use with the smaller screensize of the Smartphone. However, because of the Responsive Design technology, the website is able to adapt to various devices such as the Ipad and Smartphonesand the website will be able to adapt to the screen sizes of these devices. As it has all been processed using open-source, everyone has the right to accessthe source code. It is also possible for anyone to make changes to the code ifsuch changes are required. It is very important that two solutions are chosen asit is possible that one of the solutions will not prove to work adequately. Theconclusion was between the solutions given by both Liferay and HTML in ResponsiveDesign and it was determined that Liferay's version of ResponsiveDesign works better in its own environment.

This report was assembled by a team at the University of Arizona to provide ethnographic and ethnohistorical information to interpret and define preexisting lifeways of the people who settled San Francisco. These founders were selected, organized, educated, and guided to San Francisco by Juan Bautista de Anza (Anza). This study is especially focused on why Anza selected potential founders, why founders would have gone on this settlement journey, and what lifeways the founders would have carried with them—mostly in their heads.

Abstract:
Identifying the pairing symmetry is a crucial step towards uncovering the superconducting mechanism. The pairing symmetry and interactions leading to pairing in the iron-based high-temperature superconductors are under debate. In this thesis work, the pairing symmetry of LiFeAs, a stoichiometric superconductor in the iron-based family, is studied by scanning tunneling microscopy. The tunneling conductance spectrum in a defect-free region shows two nodeless superconducting gaps. In addition, a dip-hump above-gap structure was observed, indicating coupling between the superconducting carriers and bosonic modes. Defect bound states were measured for iron-site defects. The bound states are pinned to the gap edge of the small superconducting gap, consistent with theoretical predictions for a sign-changing pairing symmetry. Finally, the observed Bogoliubov quasiparticle interference associated with scattering from defects provides compelling evidence for an s+- pairing symmetry in LiFeAs.<br>Science, Faculty of<br>Physics and Astronomy, Department of<br>Graduate

Silvestri, Letizia. "Caves and human lifeways in Middle Bronze Age central Italy : a social bioarchaeology approach." Thesis, Durham University, 2017. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/12226/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is about the Middle Bronze Age (MBA: 1750-1450 BC) caves of central Italy, and the faunal and plant remains found inside them using the combined approach of contextual archaeology and social bioarchaeology. I draw new inferences from these ecofactual remains, which are crucial to improving our understanding of human lifeways in the Apennine region of the Italian peninsula. This work is much needed both in the field of cave archaeology (especially in relation to the Italian area) and in that of bioarchaeology. Here, traditional methodological issues, such as a tendency to ignore the ritual aspects of cave deposits, have produced substantial biases in the interpretations of the subsistence strategies. In addition, such traditional approaches based on Higgs’ (1975) palaeoeconomy have prevented bioarchaeological disciplines such as zooarchaeology and palaeoethnobotany from being productively used in several fields of application, notably in social archaeology. By analysingthe data published over the last 35 years, as well as four archival collections and the new data from the newly excavated deposits at Mora Cavorso, Pastena and Collepardo caves, I have been able to: 1) recognise cave datasets as biased sources for the direct reconstruction of palaeoeconomy; 2) identify significant evidence pointing to the coexistence of agriculture and sheep farming even at the same sites, and to infer new information about seasonality and transhumance in the study area; 3) isolate recurrent trends in animal and plant selection in the sampled caves. This evidence points to specific ritual choices that must have been integrated into the religious framework of the communities that used these caves. This highlights both the variability of human practices undertaken at these sites, and the similarities between them, shedding more light on the nature and – in some cases – the possible significance of such rituals. In sum, I demonstrate how complex the use of caves in MBA central Italy was, and that a strict categorisation of such uses (as domestic, ritual, burial) is misleading.

Richardson, Leesha. "ETD: The role of seals in coastal hunter-gatherer lifeways at Robberg, South Africa." Master's thesis, Faculty of Science, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/32946.

Full text
Abstract:
Seals were a major dietary item for coastal hunter-gatherers and herders in South Africa. At Nelson Bay Cave (NBC), more than half of the Holocene mammal bones are from Cape Fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus). Previous analyses of the seal assemblage from this site have studied only selected skeletal elements. This study is the first comprehensive analysis of seal remains from selected archaeological levels at Nelson Bay Cave and from the 2007/2008 excavations at nearby Hoffmans/Robberg Cave (HRC). Body part representation and frequency, age distribution and bone modification have been documented to determine the role of seals in the lifeways of hunter-gatherers and pastoralists at Robberg throughout the Holocene. The age profiles indicate that seals were obtained directly from a breeding colony throughout the Holocene. A breeding colony at Robberg would have been a rich and reliable resource for coastal foragers throughout the year. There were differences in skeletal element representation in the Early and Middle Holocene, compared with the Late Holocene. Axial skeletal elements are under-represented in earlier time periods, probably due to field butchery and the return of only parts of the seals to the living sites. In the Late Holocene, entire animals were taken back to site. Within each time period, the skeletal profiles of juveniles and adults indicate that both were processed similarly suggesting that aspects such as carcass size, weight and foraging distance were less important factors in transport decisions than the terrain of the Robberg Peninsula and the size of the hunting party. A large proportion of the bones were complete, or almost complete. There was little evidence of canid gnawing. The skeletal element representation, frequency and cut mark patterns suggest that the heads and flippers were highly sought after throughout the Holocene, as recorded in Arctic ethnography. Seals were also of spiritual significance, possibly in aiding transitions from the material into the spirit world.

Abstract:
This work presents scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy investigations on the stoichiometric superconductor lithium iron arsenide (LiFeAs). To reveal the electronic properties, measurements on defect-free surfaces as well as near defects have been performed. The former shows a shift of atomic position with respect to the applied bias voltage. Furthermore, temperature dependent spectroscopic measurements indicate the coupling of quasiparticles in the vicinity of the superconducting coherence peaks. LiFeAs surfaces influenced by atomic defects show a spacial variation of the superconducting gap. The defects can be characterized by their symmetry and thus can be assigned to a position in the atomic lattice. Detailed spectroscopic investigations of defects reveal their influence on the quasiparticle density of states. In particular, Fe-defects show a small effect on the superconductivity while As-defects strongly disturb the superconducting gap. Measurements in magnetic field have been performed for the determination of the Ginzburg-Landau coherence length . For this purpose, a suitable fit-function has been developed in this work. This function allows to fit the differential conductance of a magnetic vortex at U=0 V. The fit results in a coherence length of 3,9 nm which corresponds to an upper critical field of 21 Tesla. Besides measurements on a single vortex, investigation on the vortex lattice have been performed. The vortex lattice constant follows thereby the predicted behavior of a trigonal vortex lattice. However, for magnetic fields larger than 6 Tesla an increasing lattice disorder sets in, presumably due to vortex-vortex-interactions

Abstract:
At their discovery in 2008, iron pnictide superconductors (IPS) provoked tremendous scientific interest, comparable to the discovery of the cuprate superconductors. So far, IPS reached critical temperatures T c up to 56K. Typically, they show an antiferromagnetic (afm) spin density wave (SDW) which has to be suppressed by doping before superconductivity develops, which then is supported by further doping. Due to the close vicinity of the magnetic and the superconducting (sc) phase, magnetic fluctuations are discussed to be responsible for the sc pairing mechanism in IPS. A special member of the IPS is LiFeAs, because it does not need doping to become sc. It is a stoichiometric superconductor at a T c of 18K. In fact, doping is suppressing its T c . Also, there is no sign of an afm SDW present. Therefore, LiFeAs is a interesting material to study the properties of the IPS in an undisturbed material. In 2010, experiments of the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden (IFW Dresden) revealed further surprising properties of LiFeAs. Samples with a Li deficiency undergo a ferromagnetic (fm) phase transition at 165K. Theoretical calculations suggest that fm fluctuations could induce triplet superconductivity in LiFeAs. This would cause a nonvanishing dynamic susceptibility below T c , which is supported by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments. This thesis is discussing the results of the IFW Dresden experiments, and concludes that this ferromagnetism is of weak itinerant nature. The origin might be an increase of the density of states (DOS) at the Fermi level, which is causing an instability towards fm order, as proposed by the Stoner model. For further doping experiments, the synthesis procedure of polycrystalline LiFeAs was optimized to get samples with maximum T c and minimum impurities. Therefore, nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) was used. The NQR line width is a measure of impurities in the sample. By minimizing the NQR line width, optimal samples were synthesized. These samples are able to compete with the properties of single crystals. To investigate the doping behavior of LiFeAs, a scenario with four different kinds of impurities and deficiencies was performed with the optimized synthesis procedure. 24 different samples were analyzed, by means of NQR and electrical conductivity. It was found that in fact Fe excess is responsible for changing the physical properties of LiFeAs, and not Li deficiency. It is causing a shrinking of the unit cell volume, as seen by X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements and it causes a decrease of T c . It also leads to a decrease of room temperature resistivity, which is supporting an increase of the DOS at the Fermi level. The NQR frequency is scaling with the amount of Fe excess and can be used to draw the sc and fm phase diagram of off-stoichiometric LiFeAs. At an amount between 3.2 and 3.6% o f Fe excess LiFeAs undergoes the fm transition.

Chiripanhura, Pauline. "Archaeological collections as a prime research asset: objects and Great Zimbabwe's past." Doctoral thesis, University of Cape Town, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/27947.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis sought to explore the lifeways of second-millennium AD inhabitants of Great Zimbabwe through the analyses of material objects housed in museums. Great Zimbabwe comprises walled stone enclosures and non-walled settlements covering approximately 720ha. A number of data acquisition techniques, such as desktop survey, analyses of museum collections, supplementary field survey and excavations, were employed to collect relevant datasets to address the research questions. The sampling strategy adapted for this research enabled the study of material objects from different components making up Great Zimbabwe. The main conclusions drawn from this study are as follows: (i) Within varying temporal scales, the nature and distribution of local and imported objects are largely similar across the site; (ii) chronologically and typologically speaking, there is evidence that different parts of the site were occupied and abandoned at different times; and (iii) based on the similarities in material objects and associated production debris and infrastructure, it is likely that different components were self-sufficient units. This study has underscored the significance of existing collections in developing new interpretations of Great Zimbabwe's past lifeways, thereby motivating for the need for similar work to understand the hundreds of similar settlements scattered across southern Africa.

Charlton, Sophy Jessica Laura. "Lifeways at the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition : integrating new biomolecular approaches to skeletal material in Britain." Thesis, University of York, 2016. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/12976/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Mesolithic-Neolithic transition is a period which has long held fascination for archaeologists, and yet the lifeways of individuals at this time are still not fully understood – in part due to the lack of human remains in Britain from the period. This thesis therefore aimed to adopt a combined biomolecular approach to determine more information about the lifeways of both the Mesolithic and Neolithic of Britain, and of the transition between them, but utilising archaeological material not traditionally included within these debates – notably unidentifiable bone fragments, disarticulated skeletal remains, and dental calculus. Through analysis of these materials, the thesis focuses on five main areas of interest: identification, diet, mobility, chronology, and health/disease; utilising six different techniques: ZooMS, δ13C and δ15N stable isotope analysis, 86Sr/87Sr isotopic analysis, AMS dating, and metagenomic and metaproteomic analysis of dental calculus. As such, this marks the largest combined application of biomolecular techniques to British Mesolithic and Neolithic material to date. The results of this study highlight the value which may be held within previously overlooked early prehistoric archaeological materials, and the information which they may be able to contribute to existing discussions of Mesolithic and Neolithic lifeways. Overall, it can be seen that the main outcomes of this study are (i) that additional human remains may be present within early prehistoric ‘unidentifiable’ fragmented bone assemblages; (ii) dietary complexity in both the Mesolithic and Neolithic of Britain may be greater than previously thought; (iii) enhanced understanding of Neolithic mobility; (iv) a reconsideration of the approach to chronology at the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition; and (v) that dental calculus may provide a suitable and useful new medium via which to study prehistoric health and disease in future studies.

Curtis-Summers, Shirley. "Reconstructing Christian lifeways : a bioarchaeological study of medieval inhabitants from Portmahomack, Scotland and Norton Priory, England." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2015. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/2022439/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates lifeways of medieval Christian communities from Portmahomack, Northeast Scotland and Norton Priory, Northwest England, to ascertain the extent to which skeletal indicators of diet, disease or trauma reflect religious or social influences. Osteology and palaeopathology methods on human adult and sub-adult skeletons from Portmahomack (6th to 17th century) and Norton Priory (12th to 16th century) was undertaken to provide evidence relating to the four key themes proposed in this study: ‘biological or familial affinity’, ‘the living environment’, ‘trauma and conflict’, and ‘diet and nutrition-related stresses’. Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis of bone collagen from adult humans from Portmahomack (including and a sub-sample of sub-adults) and Norton Priory were measured for dietary reconstructions. Faunal bone collagen was also analysed from Portmahomack and Norton Priory (plus a selection of fish bones from Chester Cathedral) to provide isotopic baselines to reconstruct human diets. The results suggest past lifeways of Christian communities from Portmahomack and Norton Priory can indeed be successfully reconstructed through bioarchaeology. The evidence from this study has found that skeletal traits, alongside burial evidence, can elucidate familial affinities, especially from Norton Priory, and that differences in cultural and religious practices are reflected within the living environment of ecclesiastic and lay groups. Evidence of violence, reflecting interpersonal conflict and vulnerability was found from both Portmahomack and Norton Priory, which was inconsistent with the role of ecclesiastic and lay communities that were expected to follow strict Christian doctrines. Stable isotope data revealed a diachronic change in diet at Portmahomack; no fish were consumed during the monastic period, whereas significant amounts were consumed by layfolk in the later periods, suggesting Christian dietary practices changed over time. The isotope data from Norton Priory reflected a more homogeneous diet that did not change greatly over time, suggesting conformity to the same fasting practices. Overall, this study has demonstrated that adopting a multidisciplinary bioarchaeological approach, integrating skeletal, chemical, archaeological, and historical evidence, results in a powerful research tool that enables reconstructions of medieval Christian lifeways and interpretations of religious and social influences therein.

Abstract:
Act 33 of 1995 is an amendment to Pennsylvania's Juvenile Act (2008). This amendment changed jurisdictional boundaries for juvenile offenders who committed violent crimes with weapons. As a result, youth who committed violent crimes with weapons were automatically transferred to the adult criminal justice system. Using punctuated equilibrium as the theoretical foundation, the purpose of this study was to determine if Act 33, as a punctuating event, resulted in an increase in the number of youth transferred to the adult criminal justice system and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole in an urban county in Pennsylvania. Secondary data (N = 143) were acquired from the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections on juveniles sentenced to life without the possibility of parole in Pennsylvania pre and post Act 33. Chi-square test with 2-way contingency table analysis was used to analyze the data. Results did not indicate a statistically significant association between the numbers of juveniles transferred to the adult criminal justice system and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole and the implementation of Pennsylvania of Act 33. The positive social change implications of this study include recommendations to the Pennsylvania legislators to increase state funds in order to implement service integration for juvenile lifers returning to the community.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, the electronic properties in superconducting LiFeAs single crystal are investigated using low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S) at various temperatures. For this purpose, the differential conductance (dI/dV) measured by STS which is directly proportional to the local density of states (LDOS) of the sample to the sub-atomic precision, is used together with the topography information. The dI/dV spectra within the ±1 V energy range reveal a characteristic feature at around -350 mV to -400 mV in stoichiometric LiFeAs. This feature seems to be a universal property among all the Fe-based high temperature superconductors, because it is also found in Fe0.965Se1.035 and NaFe0.975Co0.025As single crystals at the energy of -210 mV and -200 mV, respectively. The temperature dependent spectroscopy data averaged over a spatially fixed clean area of 2 nm × 2 nm are successfully executed between 5 K and 20 K. The two distinct superconducting phases with critical temperatures Tc = 16 K and 18 K are observed. In addition, the distance between the dip position outside the superconducting gap and the superconducting coherence peak in the spectra remains temperature independent which confirms that it is not connected to an antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin resonance. The temperature dependent spectra have been measured between 5 K and 61 K within the energy range of ±100 mV as well. The hump structure at 42 mV tends to disappear around 60 K from unknown origin. The temperature dependent quasiparticle interference (QPI) has been studied within the temperature range between 6.7 K and 25 K and analyzed by the Fourier transformation of the measured spectroscopic maps. The dispersion plots in momentum space as a function of temperature show an enhancement of QPI intensity (±5.5 mV) within the superconducting gap at the Fermi level at 6.7 K near q ~ 0. This is interpreted on the basis of Andreev bound state. In both polarities outside of this, a depletion of QPI intensity is noticed between 5.5 mV and around 9 mV. At positive energies, the QPI intensity becomes very rich above 9 mV. The size of the enhanced QPI intensity near the Fermi level, and the edge of the rich QPI intensity beyond 9 mV are found to behave like superconducting order parameter with rising of temperature. Furthermore, an energy mode peaked at around 14 mV appears in the integrated QPI intensity below superconducting Tc (6.7 K). This is consistent with the observed peak at 1st derivative of the dI/dV spectra. In both of these cases, such 14 mV peak is suppressed at normal state (25 K). This mode is therefore directly related to superconductivity in LiFeAs. The off-stoichiometric LiFeAs single crystal with superconducting Tc of 6.5 K has a 10 mV rigid band shift of the Fermi level towards electron doping. The absence of the rich QPI intensity between 9 mV and 17 mV is found compared to the stoichiometric LiFeAs, and hence the 14 mV mode is absent here. This brings us to conclude once more time that such 14 mV energy mode is relevant for superconductivity in LiFeAs.

Abstract:
This thesis presents the NMR measurements on the single crystals LiMnPO4 and Li0.9FeAs. Therefore, the thesis is divided into two separated sections. The first part reports on the competitive next generation cathode material LiMnPO4 with a stable reversible capacity up to 145 mAh/g and a rather flat discharge voltage curve at 4.1 V. For the basic understanding of the material the magnetic properties have been investigated by a Li and P NMR study in the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phase. LiMnPO4 shows a strong anisotropy of the dipolar hyperfine coupling due to the strong local magnetic moments at the Mn site. The corresponding dipole tensor of the Li- and P-nuclei is fully determined by orientation and temperature dependent NMR experiments and compared to the calculated values from crystal structure data. Deviations of the experimentally determined values from the theoretical ones are discussed in terms of Mn disorder which could have an impact on the mobility of the Li ions. The disorder is corroborated by diffuse x-ray diffraction experiments which indicate a shift of the heavy elements in the lattice, namely the Mn atoms. Furthermore, the spin arrangement in the relative strong field of 7.0494 T in the antiferromagnetic state is understood by the NMR measurements. In order to obtain parameters of the Li ion diffusion in LiMnPO4 measurements of the spin lattice relaxation rate were performed. Due to the strong dipolar coupling between the Li-nuclei and the magnetic moments at the Mn site it is difficult to extract parameters which can characterize the diffusive behavior of the Li ions. The second section reports on the AC/DC susceptibility and NMR/NQR studies on Li deficit samples labeled as Li0.9FeAs. LiFeAs belongs to the family of the superconducting Pnictides which are discovered in 2008 by H. Hosono et al. In recent studies the stoichiometric compound reveals triplet superconductivity below Tc ∼ 18 K which demands ferromagnetic coupling of the electrons in the Cooper pairs. In Li0.9FeAs the Li deficit acts like hole doping which suppresses the superconductivity. Then ferromagnetism can arise which is very interesting because of the vicinity to the triplet superconductivity. With the microscopic methods NMR/NQR on the Li and As nuclei, it was investigated where the ferromagnetism can be located in Li0.9FeAs. Recent susceptibility, ESR and µSR studies reveal an internal field due to the ferromagnetism. In contrast, the internal field could not be used to perform zero field NMR measurements. Possible reasons for this discrepancy are discussed. In addition, the automatic insitu AC susceptibility technique by using the NMR radio frequency circuit has been tested by a reference compound Co2TiGa which shows itinerant ferromagnetism. Similar curves are observed for Li0.9FeAs which indicate the existence of itinerant magnetic moments in Li0.9FeAs. Furthermore, in order to determine the size of the dipolar contribution from the magnetic moments of the Fe the dipolar hyperfine coupling tensor was calculated from the crystal structure data. The comparison of the experimental and calculated hyperfine coupling elements reveals transferred hyperfine fields in LiFeAs.

Abstract:
This thesis presents experimental studies of the electronic and magnetic properties of several iron-based unconventional superconductors, primarily using the techniques of magnetotransport and torque magnetometry in high magnetic fields and synchrotron-based angle-resolved photo-emission spectroscopy (ARPES). Superconductivity in the iron-based superconductors is always found in proximity to a magnetic phase, and the details of the electronic structure and Fermi surface are also important in determining the strength of interactions, and ultimately superconductivity. This motivates the experimental studies of electronic, magnetic and superconducting properties of Fe-based superconductors presented in this thesis. First, quantum oscillation measurements using high-field torque magnetometry are used to provide a partial determination of the Fermi surface of superconducting LiFeAs. The data are compared with density functional theory calculations, finding strong mass enhancements on the observed electron bands, however the hole bands are not observed. A large portion of this thesis concerns experiments on FeSe, which uniquely has a structural transition but is not magnetically ordered at any temperature. High field magnetotransport measurements show quantum oscillations, revealing small quasi-two dimensional Fermi surfaces, and it is argued that both hole and electron pockets are observed. The low-temperature Fermi surface consisting of one hole pocket and two electron pockets is also deduced from low-field magnetotransport. ARPES studies show that both hole and electron pockets undergo a significant elongation when cooling through the structural transition at ~90 K, interpreted as the result of orbital order. Measurements of the resistivity anisotropy above the structural transition are used to show that the structural distortion is electronically-driven. By combining these data sets, a complete picture of the symmetry-broken electronic structure of FeSe is constructed. The final chapter concerns another iron-based superconductor with a more complex crystal structure, the so-called ``10-3-8" phase, and in particular finds an unusual field-induced magnetic transition.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: James M. O'Toole<br>This dissertation explores the formative years of the right-to-life movement in the decade prior to Roe v. Wade and explains how early right-to-lifers built a vast and powerful movement in the 1960s and 1970s. Whereas most previous studies have focused on the connection between right-to-life organizing and the conservative ascendancy in religion and politics in the 1970s and 1980s, this dissertation studies the movement’s origins in state and local organizing in the years before Roe v. Wade and its growth into a national political crusade in the 1970s. During these years, grassroots activists fostered a vision for a broad-based right-to-life movement—a movement consisting of Americans from across the political and religious spectrums. This movement was made up of Catholics, Protestants, and Jews, Democrats and Republicans, conservatives and liberals, lay people as well as religious leaders—all of whom opposed legalized abortion for a range of reasons. Right-to-lifers believed their broad-based approach was the most effective way to fight abortion, and they embraced this diverse coalition, attacking abortion on a number of fronts with strategies ranging from legislative lobbying to alternatives to abortion to nonviolent direct action. Though their coalition eventually broke apart in the 1980s, this eclectic group of right-to-lifers built a dynamic and diverse movement and proved the powerful resonance of the abortion issue in American society<br>Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2018<br>Submitted to: Boston College. Peake, Richard. "The privatised lifer : an observation of a cohort of life-sentenced prisoners through HMP Wolds December 2003 – July 2005." Thesis, University of Hull, 2008. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:999.

Full text
Abstract:
This research proved a unique opportunity to observe a cohort of 20 life-sentenced prisoners that had already negotiated an often fragmented and difficult ‘system’. These prisoners were at the Category-C stage of their sentence (medium security) and looking to progress to Category-D (open conditions) and ultimately towards release on license. Unusually, they were attempting to do this at a private prison, HMP Wolds in East Yorkshire - the first private prison to open in Europe in 1992. Due to negotiating a new contract in 2001, it became the first private prison house a group of ‘lifers’ in a dedicated Lifer Unit. The research details how progress was made and how this private prison, staffed with predominantly untrained specialised ‘lifer’ supervisors, coped with this type of prisoner and if the prisoners would progress on time. This qualitative research project examines issues such as conditions, staffing, education, work and programmes, mainly through the eyes of the prisoners but also by way of staff interviews and observation. Although no direct comparison could be made with a similar private prison, as no other private prison held lifers at that time, it is a useful observational study with a degree of longitudinal depth. The prison certainly demonstrated that it could hold lifers in very good conditions, overseen by excellent quality staff and three quarters of the cohort had either progressed on time or were scheduled to progress to open conditions at the time the research concluded. From the Director personally, the staff made every effort to do things correctly, not only providing the minimum requirements, but providing pockets of innovation that could lead to universal improvements in the treatment of prisoners in England and Wales – most notably the decent manner in which prisoners were treated by staff, which leads to a much more relaxed atmosphere, and therefore a quieter prison with few disciplinary issues. Cognitive-behavioural programmes were analysed and the research demonstrated that the whole rehabilitative idea, although well conceived, is poorly administered in practice, with no central coordination. The research questions whether lifers are suited to such programmes and whether they should actually take up much sought-after places on such courses considering their potential distance from release. To bring this narrative account to life, the thesis highlights two prisoners and conducts a detailed ‘case study’ of each; one who negotiated the ‘system’ successfully and another who failed to engage. It follows their time at HMP Wolds and explores their experiences of the prison regime generally, conditions and staff and considers such issues as sentence planning, town visits, programme provision and delivery. These two prisoners commented lucidly on their time in HMP Wolds and although they were generally very positive about their experience, these comparative case studies demonstrate the difficulty in negotiating the prison ‘system’. The standard of treatment in HMP Wolds was found to be high, backed up with external inspection reports, with most lifers making progress on time due to excellent staff diligence. The privatisation debate, morally and practically, is discussed at length and the holding of lifers sees an increase in not only numbers, but responsibility in the private sector. It could be argued that following almost two years studying this private prison; that if private establishments prove to be no worse that the public sector and no more expensive, then surely this is all that can be asked of them. There is concern as to whether the currently over-crowded prison system is working, but private prisons have certainly not added to the problem, indeed privatisation may have improved some aspects and therefore relatively, privatisation can and should be labelled a success.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the ecology of a pre-contact Western Alaskan faunal assemblage, through a combination of zooarchaeological and stable isotope techniques. The permafrost-preserved assemblage was excavated in 2009/10 at Nunalleq (c. AD 1350-1700) on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta by the University of Aberdeen, in collaboration with Qanirtuuq Inc. and the Native village of Quinhagak. Zooarchaeological analysis was conducted to identify the species present at Nunalleq. Analysis of butchery marks suggested patterns of human utilization of faunal resources and data on the age profile of the assemblage provided information on the seasonality of hunting and site occupation. A wide range of marine, freshwater and terrestrial species was observed, with pinnipeds, dogs and caribou particularly frequent. Subsequently, stable isotope analysis (δ13C, δ15N and δ34S) was carried out on 20 species identified at Nunalleq. The application of carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis enabled investigation of the diets and habitats of the various species and their relative positions in the food-web. These data were compared with data from contemporaneous Alaskan sites and modern studies, allowing investigation of diachronic and geographical variability. The dogs, as the only domestic species found in the prehistoric North American Arctic with a unique role between the domestic and the wild, were the focus of an in-depth zooarchaeological and isotopic case study. The comparison of stable isotope data from humans and dogs revealed a similarity in diet and, together with osteological evidence for butchery, indicated the complex role of dogs in human subsistence strategies. Sulphur isotope analysis provided a complementary tool with which to explore isotope variability, and facilitated a consideration of its potential benefits in enhancing the more commonly-used combination of carbon and nitrogen analysis in the interpretation of faunal isotope ecology. The advantages of integrating zooarchaeological and stable isotope data are discussed and future research directions are explored.

Abstract:
The discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in 1986 in copper-oxide materials have opened up new avenues to investigate new families of quantum materials that were previously not known. Understanding the mechanism of superconductivity in high-T[sub]c superconductors has been an important research theme in condensed matter physics, as it is believed to be essential to realize the next generation engineered materials that become superconducting at room temperature. Discovered in 2006, iron based superconductors are a new addition to the family of high-T[sub]c superconductors, these materials exhibit several interesting properties and show some vivid similarities with cuprates and other families of high-temperature superconductors. In this thesis, I will present the spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SPSTM) study carried out on the parent compound of iron chalcogenide high temperature superconductor Fe[sub](1+y)Te to investigate the bi-collinear antiferromagnetic order. Magnetic tips in this work are prepared using a novel preparation technique by picking up excess iron atoms and clusters of FeTe from the surface of the sample. Next, I will present the SP-STM results obtained in the spin glass phase of Fe[sub](1+y)SeₓTe₁₋ₓ visualizing the interplay between the short ranged bi-directional bi-collinear antiferromagnetic order and superconductivity at the atomic scale. In this thesis, I will also present the scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS) study of the native and engineered defect bound states in the iron-pnictide superconductor LiFeAs. This study addresses the pairing symmetry of the superconducting order parameter and understanding of dip-hump features seen in STM spectra outside the superconducting gap in iron pnictide superconductor LiFeAs.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) has been a fundamental player in the studies of superconducting materials for many decades. This local probe technique allows for the study of the static electronic properties as well as the low energy excitations of the electrons in the normal and the superconducting state. On that account it has also been widely applied to Fe-based superconductors from the very beginning of their discovery in February 2008. This dissertation comprises some of these very first NMR results, reflecting the unconventional nature of superconductivity and its strong link to magnetism in the investigated compounds LaO(1-x)F(x)FeAs and LiFeAs.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣師範大學<br>地理研究所<br>90<br>The main concept of this thesis is Cultural landscape and lifeway(Genve de vie)of the Man-Land tradition. By researching the material, institutional and spiritual life of the Chi pei shua villagers, the purpose of this thesis is to find out the result of the cultural contact and changes, afterwards construct its regional character. This thesis describes the historical background of the Chi pei shua village in the beginning. Chi pei shua village is located by the枕頭Mt. and midstream of龜重溪. Villagers’ ancestor was one tribe of the plain aborigines--Siraya, and they came from Chiali(佳里) during the Chien’lung period for protecting the aborigines. Because of its special location and complex resident composition, it is affected by Han-Chinese culture later than other areas. There were three population characteristics during the Japanese-ruled period: (1) plain aborigines population were more than Han-Chinese; (2)most of the Han-Chinese were came from Fujian; (3) the most first-name of villagers was 段. However, uxorilocal marriage was very popular in the early era. Kindred type of this village could not be determined by the first-name like other Han-Chinese villages. By this historical background, first we discuss these villagers’ material lifeway. We choose domestic architectures, their external arrangement and forms, and their inner allocation of space as indicators. Pingpu zu care about the practicability of the house, and they built up their architecture on platforn. Elder brothers’ precedence was not very important in allocating the space in the house. On the other hand, the external arrangement of Han-Chinese domestic architecture reflects the significance of the rice cultivation ecological system. Besides practicability, they put more emphasises on the symmetry of house. The allocation of space in the house reflects the social principle that the older brothers take precedence over younger brothers. Now the forms of house in Chi pei shua are various and seem sinicized. But through 6 cases, we find that villagers’ basis to allocate the inner space is not the common social principle but its convenience. On the aspect of social relation, we choose marriage type, family structure, the role of family members and the organization of tribe and lineage as indicators. Pingpu zu practiced delayed-transfer-uxorilocal marriage and mandatory abortion, so the brotherhood was more important than the parenthood. Female was the leader in family but not in the tribe. Married Han-Chinese male constructs his own family, in which husband’s status is higher than wife’s. Male is also the leader in lineage organization. Chi pei shua has changed to patrilineal society during Japanese-ruled period, but it still has some matrilineal thoughts such as wife has the same status as husband, female’s position is equal to male’s, people who have different first-name are 「共內面仔」, and female’s names are listed on the phylon, etc.. Having both Pingpu and Han-Chinese thoughts and practicing these thoughts on everyday life are the peculiarities of social relation in Chi pei shua. In spiritual life, we observe the spatial specialty of villagers’ domestic and communal worship. By reading the old documents, we notice that Siraya and Han-Chinese traditional religion are very different. There are 大公界and 東河宮in Chi pei shua nowadays. In religion ritual, villagers use lunar calendar but still put Ali Mu(阿立母)in a higher position. Two kinds of religions display in villagers’ daily life, so this thesis use the domestic worship in 大廳 and annual ceremony in 2001 to reveal the spatiality.「佛祖、公媽牌」 and 「Ali mu、An tsu(案祖)」all appear on the 紅隔桌in大廳. 「佛祖遊庄」and 「拜豬」are both proceeding in annual ceremony in 2001. Although these two religions(Ali mu and 佛祖、清水祖師)are different, they can’t be separated. Jointing the Siraya and Han-Chinese religion but different from them is the spatial specialty of Chi pei shua. As mentioned above, we conclude that the complex resident composition and special historical background affect the material, institutional and spiritual life of the Chi pei shua villagers. After observing villagers’ lifeway, we find that the two kinds of culture(Pingpu and Han-Chinese)are always affecting each other, and that is just the regional character of Chi pei shua.

Zhuangzi disdained secular world, disregarded benevolence and righteousness, ceremonies and music and disrespected the wise. Saints in Zhuangzi’s view were different from those of Confucian’s and Mohist’s. Therefore, Zhuangzi had other names for his ideal personalities besides Saints. He presented “the Perfect Man”, “the Man of God” and “the True Man”. Although their names are different, they’re, in fact, pointing to the same person who’s spirit merges with Dao as one. They had one thing in common. They detached themselves from the matter, did not differentiate between life and death and reached a mind of vacuity. Through these ideal personalities, Zhuangzi attempted to overcome the inevitable shackles in life such as life and death, time and fate, affection and desire. He thought the dilemma in life was caused by a predetermined mind of a human being. When the human body was formed, it decayed and demised during the life time. However, when the human was alive, his body opposed things in the outside world while his mind was in conflict with matter. His mind and body were not able to be in harmony. Thus, one’s mind is determined by matter without knowing it. So, one must dispel the stubbornness in the mind in order to see the real image of the physical world. Otherwise, one is confined by his own perspective and is forced to forfeit the chance of pursuing a true value in one’s life. Zhuangzi proposed the idea of “No self”,” No merit”,” No fame” to be In contrast to arguments between the Confucians’ and Mohists’. The endless confliction between right and wrong, yes or no, in the material world damaged the harmony of life and nature. One’s mind and body were unable to settle. Thus, Zhuangzi provided the ideal personality with a new dimension of value that helped humans to realize the true value of life.
