Abstract Ovarian cancer is the most common gynaecological cancer in the United Kingdom, with 5174 cases being reported in 1988 (Office of Population Censuses and Surveys 1994). Most of these cancers are epithelial in origin. The lifetime risk of developing ovarian cancer is 1.5 percent which is considerably lower than the 7.1 percent lifetime risk of developing breast cancer. Ovarian cancer-related deaths per annum outnumber those from cancer of the cervix and endometrium combined. Most women present with advanced disease at diagnosis and 80-85 percent of such women will die of their disease.
