Abstract:

Abstract:
New Caledonia is a species-rich region that has been the focus of biodiversity research for over 40 years. The expedition “Atelier Lifou 2000” collected benthic fauna at the island of Lifou, Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia, in November of 2000. This is a taxonomic account of the brittle stars found. 94 species were identified, 51 of them new for the region, and seven new to science, increasing the total number of species known from the New Caledonia region to 204. New species are described in the genera Squamophis, Astroceras, Astrogymnotes, Ophiochondrus, Ophiomoeris, Ophiozonella and Amphipholis. Three species and a subspecies are revised, one of them placed in a new genus. The taxonomic status of Euryale Lamarck, 1816, a junior homonym of Euryale Péron & Lesueur, 1810 (a medusa), is stabilized by formally establishing precedence over the senior name.

Abstract:
Rock art in an inland cave on the island of Lifou, New Caledonia, has been radiocarbon dated. A cluster of early paintings date to 2500 years ago, soon after the arrival of the first settlers, who must have quickly gone inland probably in pursuit of fresh water, available near the cave. They left their mark on the cave in the form of numerous hand stencils. During the first millennium AD, later generations of artists used the same cave, drawing birds and a circular sign for water still recognised by the present community.

Abstract:
The genus Drylichus Heller, which has not been treated since the original description in 1916, is reviewed taxonomically. The type species, Drylichus hylesinoides Heller (New Caledonia), is redescribed. Two new species, D. fidelitas sp. nov. (Lifou Island) and D. monteithi sp. nov. (New Caledonia), are described. Drylichus is hypothesized to be closely related with Parnida Broun (New Zealand), with which it shares the following characters: (1) shape of mouthparts and gular region, (2) distribution and morphology of sensilla on mouthparts, (3) configuration of antennomeres, (4) correspondence of several types of antennal sensilla, (5) shape of ventral sclerites of thorax and abdomen.

Abstract:
Drehu is the austronesian language spoken on the island of lifou, one of the loyalty islands. It has been chosen as one of the lan, guages giving, through an option, access to the french leaving certificate. The publication of this drehu-french dictionnary aims at putting into perspective the morphological traits of the language, as step, ping stones towards the development of our knowledge of the lan, guages of south-east asia and oceania. More than a simple list of words, this work also sums the ethnogra, phic knowledge about the island, giving information on the social organization, everyday life, traditional arts and crafts, medical knowledge, as well as myths and beliefs. The author has sought to be as exhaustive as feasible, having recourse to a wealth of ancient informants, gone, but well remembered. The book contains numerous words dealing with the vegetable and animal nomenclature, words which cannot be found in any other publication. There are some 700 names of domestic or plants having a medicinal use, with their scientific definition and their local ver, nacular name in french. To know one's language and make its importance be appreciated by others, as a carrier of a culture, equally allowing for structural tech, niques of adapting and enriching itself, is one of the often stated aims of the younger educated generation in lifou. This dictionary has been built so as to be their tool

Abstract:
This research explores the reconfiguration of psychiatric intervention in the context of the decolonization of New Caledonia. To do so, it looks at the representations, histories of patients, care practices and discourses that frame mental disorders on the island of Lifou. In the context of the greater autonomy given to the institutions of New Caledonian, how are psychiatric practices which are strongly marked by the colonial legacy opening up and changing? How has the subjective experience of mental disorders and their care been changing? This dissertation is based on 14 months of fieldwork working at the intersection of various ethnographic entry points and angles such as family and institutional spaces of care, the rural villages of Lifou versus the urban space of Nouméa, narratives of people suffering from mental disorders and their families, but also the narratives and stories of healers, customary chiefs, pastors, nurses, psychologists and psychiatrists. Through a participant-observation led method of research that was employed in a decentralized pedopsychiatric institution on the island of Lifou, I analyzed the changes in European and Kanak discourses on mental health as well as their means of resolving mental disorders, all within the context of larger changes in techniques of governmentality. A few case studies help unfold the various patient histories that exist between these different spaces and sheds light on the subjective experience of mental disorders as well as the way in which families negotiate care in new treatment facilities. In order to better understand the healthcare institutions and actors, I also retrace the history of colonial psychiatry in New Caledonia – from an asylum-based psychiatry which was conceived within the prison colony, to its opening up in the frame of decentralized structures which take charge of care provision in addressing social suffering. This dissertation works to unravel the different dimensions of the political space of mental health, from the subjective experience of mental disorders to therapeutic power, for care institutions to the socio-sanitary actors who work within them. It shows how this space is criss-crossed by tensions between the ethics of relationality on the one hand, the techniques of discipline carried out through colonial history, and the institutional reconfigurations linked to the post-colonialism context and the ensuing neoliberalization of the economy, on the other

Abstract:
This study deals with the actancy as well as the aspectual and modal markers in Drehu, an Oceanic language spoken in the island of Lifu (Loyalty islands). It builds on the Theory of Utterance Operations as developed by A. Culioli. The first section concerns the Drehu parts of speech; the author demonstrates the polyfunctionality of Drehu lexical units and the irrelevance of a verb/noun precategorisation. The second section is devoted to the analysis of the mains mood and aspect markers. None of them expresses temporality, except when they occur without any contextual specification. Each of the aspectual and modal markers indicates a specific utterance operation. The third section, about argument structures, shows how predicates and arguments are organized along several devices, which often combine, such as constituent order and argument markers. Their use and pattern depend on the mood or aspect marker, as well as on the valency of the predicate

Abstract:
This thesis present the historic and culturel procesus of pluralism medical in the island of lifou (new caledonia). In the first part the autor present the first time of medical assistance and the processus of new medecine implantation and difusion by the protestant mission, and by the colonial administration. In this part the author describe the original history of evangelisation in lifou, history which gave a local aspect to this new medicine. The second part analyse the transformations and the interactions between the traditional and the bio-medical medicine. In the thirst part, from the exemple of obstetrical practices, the author describe the historical and cultural necessity of using the both medical systems, to prevent and save the biological and cultural life of the members of the social group

Abstract:
The research subject of this thesis is marriage and conjugality on Lifou, an island of New Caledonia, from 1842, the beginning of evangelization, up until the present day. By studying socialization for marriage, matrimonial rituels and their transformations, it seeks to make a contribution to knowledge of the gender system of this Kanak region. Ceremonial life on Lifou today is governed by opulent marriage rituals. The age group system makes marriage an obligatory passage without which an individual cannot become an "adult" (nyipi atr). Once married, the productive and reproductive capacities of the wife belong to her husband. During ceremonial marriage exchanges, a veritable "war of gifts", the totality of the relatives who constitute the network of the two kinship groups present is reactivated. Honouring the members of ones kinship and alliance networks involves accepting marriage or a conjugal relationship. Marriage and conjugality were transformed by the action of the Christian missionaries who sought to replace the local model of separation and antagonism between the sexes by a gender system based on the conjugal couple, in which "the man is the head and the woman the body". Under the system of Native Regulations (régime de l’indigénat), colonial laws strengthened a husband's rights over his wife and considerably reduced the latter's freedom of action. It was only in 1946 (the end of the system of Native Regulations), and during the independence protests in the 1980s, that the women of Lifou gained new room for manoeuvre and could thus oppose a husband's unilateral exercise of power

Abstract:
The coastal environment of French overseas territories is both affected by the hydroclimatic and natural seismic hazards, and local or global destabilizing anthropogenic actions. This PhD deals specifically with cases of Wallis and Futuna and Lifou (Loyalty Islands) in the South Pacific, and Mayotte in the Indian Ocean. In a multidisciplinary approach, it gets onto the different facets of the adaptation potential of local societies when it comes to changes at sea level: occasional (associated with storm waves and tsunami) and global (with sea level rise related to global warming). The sea level rise, that seems inevitable in the medium term, hydro-climatic and seismic (tsunami) risks, means that local societies will probably adjust and organize their territories in a different way, especially coastal area (the most occupied space at the island scale). The different disciplinary approaches crossing can offer innovative tools and methods for optimizing the sea level rise adaptation strategies

This study was carries out of the populations found on Lifou and Vauvilliers, respectively an island and islet of the Loyaulty archipelago, and on that of Taiaro in the Tuamotus by way of comparaison. The natural population of Birgus latro on Vauvilliers was a life expectancy about 10 years corresponding to thoracic sizes of 60 mm for the males and 43 mm for the females. Sexual maturity appears between 2 and 3 years for a size of 25 mm and the natural death rate is 0. 19. The individual trophic space is 0. 5 hectare. Seasonal migrations take place for reproduction, laying of eggs and moulting. On Lifou the stock is estimated at 780,000 ± 100,000, i. E. A density of 27. 5 crabs/ha ± 3. . Each year, the catch is about 5% of the stock. Juvenile crabs live under piles of vegetation between the cliff and the ocean ; once adult, they head inland. Until an age of 1 year and a size of 7 mm, juveniles protect thier abdomen by way of a shell ; these shells must be changed every four mouths. The crab's biotope is shared with other land Crustaceans. It is the third mos commun species in the community

Abstract:
Teamwork is an essential part of everyday life for many people in today's society. The team members who take part in various teams are essential for the team’s effectiveness. In this thesis I will look at the benefits a company can experience in teamwork through the use of the LIFO® method. To investigate this I have chosen to use a qualitative approach, by interviewing three people from a large transportation company, on how they experienced that LIFO® has contributed to better teamwork. The analysis of my data resulted in five main categories where communication was a superior category, and was an important part in the remaining categories, which are better understanding, LIFO® and effectiveness, the potential LIFO® brings to the table, and the relationship between colleagues. Based on the subjects that are mentioned in the analysis I have discussed the main points against the theory I have used. The main theory comes from Atkins (1999), Johnson & Johnson (2000) and Kvalsund & Meyer (2005). The general experience of the interviewees was that the use of the LIFO® method led to better understanding and awareness of their own and others' use of communication, which led to a number of other positive experiences in relation to teamwork. The interviewees highlighted both some of the same positive experiences, but also personal experiences that they felt were especially important.

Abstract:
We study the impact of tie-breaking on the behavior of greedy best-first search with a fixed state space and fixed heuristic. We prove that it is NP-complete to determine the number of states that need to be expanded by greedy best-first search in the best case or in the worst case. However, the best- and worst-case behavior can be computed in polynomial time for undirected state spaces. We perform computational experiments on benchmark tasks from the International Planning Competitions that compare the best and worst cases of greedy best-first search to FIFO, LIFO and random tie-breaking. The experiments demonstrate the importance of tie-breaking in greedy best-first search.
