Metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) are attracting increasing interest for many applications in photonics, ranging from optoelectronic devices to bioimaging and biosensing. An advantage of these systems is that their optical properties, governed by their localised surface plasmon resonance, are widely tunable via the nanoparticle shape and size, which can be controlled via e.g. colloid synthesis. In that context, it is important to develop accurate experimental methods able to correlate the size and shape of an individual single MNP, measured with nanometric precision, with its individual optical pr

To understand cell biology in detail, we must explore subcellular organization in 3D and locate proteins at high resolution. To achieve this, the most popular approach is to use two complimentary imaging techniques; light and electron microscopy. Combining these techniques by correlative or correlated light and electron microscopy (CLEM) allows cellular events to be observed first by fluorescence microscopy and then the same event can be tracked and visualised at high-resolution using electron microscopy. However, a current challenge is to develop probes to precisely visualize proteins in cell

Eftekhar, Ali Asghar. "Nanoscale light-matter interactions in the near-field of high-Q microresonators." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/45900.

Abstract:
The light-matter interaction in the near-field of high-Q resonators in SOI and SiN platforms is studied. The interactions of high-Q traveling-wave resonators with both resonant and non-resonant nanoparticles are studied and different applications based on this enhanced interactions in near-field such as high-resolution imaging of mode profile of high-Q resonators, label-free sensing, optical trapping, and SERS sensing are investigated. A near-field imaging system for the investigation of the near-field phenomena in the near-field of high-Q resonators is realized. A new technique for high-resol

Abstract:
