Abstract:
We begin this chapter by considering the ecological distribution of transparent organisms and, in particular, how they are found predominantly in one particular habitat type (open waters); we aim to explain this trend. A perfectly transparent organism (or part of an organism) will not absorb or scatter incident light. Superficially, transparent might seem like a synonym for visually undetectable, but this is not quite true: we discuss how transparent organisms can still be visually detected by their predators or prey. Conversely, there are circumstances where a little transparency can go a lon

Abstract:
This chapter describes major structures built from 1889 to 1904, many of which used skins of lightweight terra-cotta and glass that exploited new wind-bracing techniques and depressed glass prices to achieve unprecedented transparency. The flourishing of lightweight skins supported by rigid steel frames was uniquely permitted by Chicago's codes, which minimized the required thickness of masonry walls. Chicago's code helped architects and engineers solve the problems that continued to plague tall buildings on its poor soil. At 90 pounds per cubic foot for hollow brick and up to 140 pounds for p

Optical properties of photocathodes and their characterization in terms of absorptance, transparency, and reflectance in mixed dielectric media are presented. Photometric units and international standards are based on a specified white light source. The electromagnetic spectrum covers about a decade in wavelength and there is a relationship between photon energy and wavelength. Spectral responsivity can be specified in milliamps per watt or as quantum efficiency, η‎(λ‎), in terms of photoelectrons per incident photon. Empirical specifications, based on filtered light from a standard white ligh

Abstract:
This book illustrates and assesses the dramatic recent transformations in capital markets worldwide and the impact of those transformations. ‘Market making’ by humans in centralized markets has been replaced by supercomputers and algorithmic high frequency trading operating in often highly fragmented markets. How do recent market changes impact on core public policy objectives such as investor protection, reduction of systemic risk, fairness, efficiency, and transparency in markets? The operation and health of capital markets affect all of us and have profound implications for equality and jus

Abstract:
Postphenomenology and Media: Essays on Human–Media–World Relations sheds light on how new, digital media are shaping humans and their world. It does so by using the postphenomenological framework to comprehensively study “human-media relations,” making use of conceptual instruments such as the transparency-opacity distinction, embodiment, multistability, variational analysis, and cultural hermeneutics. This collection outlines central issues of media and mediation theory that can be explored postphenomenologically and showcases research at the cutting edge of philosophy of media and technology

Abstract:
This book offers a new approach to artistic representation, worked out in detail for the cases of paintings, photographs, and novels. It presents a paradox in the case of each of the three art forms, and argues for a thesis (the Non-Distraction Thesis) about the relation between medium and content. It then argues that the dominant theories of representation in the three art forms are incompatible with that thesis. Fresh light is thereby cast on familiar topics: the supposed phenomenon of ‘twofoldedness’, in the case of paintings; the alleged ‘transparency’ of photographs; the ‘paradox of ficti

This chapter sheds light on the origin of two of the most vibrant live coding communities outside of the European continent: the Indian and the Mexican. Despite the fact that both communities find themselves in different stages of consolidation and that their origins diverge in their conceptualization, there are similarities that converge in the ‘hacker philosophy’ principles. Sharing, inclusion, transparency, technology appropriation, the lack of hierarchical organization, the involvement in social causes, and the need to generate positive communal impact are some of the characteristics that

The Spratly Islands have represented a potential political and military flashpoint in the South China Sea for years, involving as they do various claims by China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Taiwan.
