The combination of an ion trap with a high finesse optical cavity is an ideal system for the investigation of strong coupling cavity quantum electrodynamics, and allows the observation of a number of interesting quantum phenomena. To achieve the small mode volumes required without impairing the ion trapping small traps with a short ion electrode distance are needed. This thesis details the design, construction and characterisation of an ultracold atoms system, developed in conjunction with a flexible optical trapping scheme which utilises a Liquid Crystal Spatial Light Modulator (LC SLM). The ultracold atoms system uses a hybrid trap formed of a quadrupole magnetic field and a focused far-detuned laser beam to form a Bose-Einstein Condensate of 2×105 87Rb atoms. This thesis focuses on the manipulation of rubidium 87 atoms in a microscopic optical dipole trap. The experiments are performed in various regimes where the number of atoms in the microscopic trap ranges from exactly one atom to several thousands on average.The single atom regime allows us to calibrate the experimental setup. We use it a quantum bit, which state we can prepare and read out with efficiencies of 99.97% and 98.6%, respectively. This thesis reports on theory and results from two experiments related to nonlinear behaviour in ensembles of optically-trapped ultracold atoms. The first experiment, performed at ICFO in Barcelona, regards the prediction and measurement of strong ac Stark shifts (light shifts). We present a numerical method based on Floquet's theorem for calculating light shifts to all orders with fewer approximations than the usual calculation based on second-order perturbation theory. Artificial reefs (ARs) have been deployed on the inner shelf of Paraná State, south Brazil, to recuperate marine biodiversity and as protection against destructive trawling activities. The purpose of this study was to offer a first characterization of the ichthyoplankton community associated with the ARs and the adjacent archipelago of Currais. Two sampling methodologies were used; 1) plankton net attached to an underwater scooter and; 2) light-traps. A hydrodynamic model was used to study dispersal trajectories to and from the study area. Sampling was conducted between 31.07.14 and 04.04.16.

In this work, a new method for mass determination of single low-charged particles in the sub-picogram regime is developed. It opens applications to chemical physics and surface science via determination of growth rates. In this thesis, we report the first observation of sub-Poissonian fluctuations in the magnetization of a spinor 87Rb condensate. The fluctuations in the magnetization are reduced up to 10 dB below the classical shot noise limit. The dissertation explores the ability of light to embody and enhance the spirit of place in the Big Bend section of West Texas. A series of surveys and research investigated and then paired elements of light and place that were designed, and installed or simulated, in four experiential case studies. The case studies were evaluated by published authors of light and place and the dissertation committee and deemed mostly successful. Light installations can be embodied and enhance the spirit of place, the installations which were experienced “live” did this most effectively.
