Abstract:
Abstract This article revisits the Marxist anticolonial feminist writings of Urdu author Ismat Chughtai through a materialist exploration into how the female body—with its erotic curvatures and grotesque protuberances, its sticky and viscous textures and fluids—becomes the focalized object of what the author terms the erotics of disgust. Chughtai is perhaps most famous for her being tried for obscenity in 1942 for her most famous short story, “The Quilt” (“Lihaaf”), which narrates a young girl’s encounter with the erotic relationship of a middle-class Muslim woman and her female servant. As Chughtai herself recounts, however, she was acquitted because the prosecution could never point to the exact words that were to be considered obscene. The author argues that we read Chughtai’s extraordinary inquiries into the imbrication of desire and disgust as the visceral sites of gender discipline, as the question of the “modern” Muslim female citizen subject hangs in the balance of an emergent Indian nationhood. The author offers a queer feminist critique of the traditional phenomenology of disgust by analyzing the codes of erotic texture produced out of histories of colonial hygiene and bourgeois sexual discipline in late colonial India.

Artikkeli käsittelee lihavan naislaulajuuden esittämistä musiikkiesityksiä sisältävissä tosi-tv-kilpailuissa, aineistona Susan Boylen ja Yoli Mayorin esitykset Got Talent -formaatissa. Tutkimuksessa kysytään, miten ohjelmissa esitetään ja tuotetaan naislaulajien sukupuolta suhteessa ruumiinkokoon musiikillisen toiminnan, puvustuksen, kuvauksen ja puheen keinoin. Kriittisen lihavuustutkimuksen, lauluesityksen tutkimuksen ja affektitutkimuksen avulla analysoidaan, miten lihavaa naislaulajuutta koetaan ja sen merkityksiä muodostetaan medioituneissa lauluesityksissä. Tosi-tv-tutkimuksen kautta tarkastellaan, miten genren ominaispiirteet ja käytänteet osallistuvat kokemusten ja merkitysten rakentamiseen. Artikkelissa pohditaan, miten aineiston tavat esittää lihavaa naislaulajuutta suhteutuvat lihavuuden mediaesitysten konventioihin ja millaista käsitystä ne välittävät lihavasta naiseudesta yleisemmin.

Sikojen tärkeimmät valintatavoitteet kantakokeessa ovat olleet kasvunopeus, rehunmuuntosuhde, liha-% ja kyljysselästä mitattu punaisen lihan laatu (loppu-pH ja väri). Punaisen lihan laatu onepäsuotuisasti korreloitunut muihin valittaviin ominaisuuksiin, ja sen osalta tavoitteena onaikaisemmin ollut pitää laatu ennallaan muita ominaisuuksia parannettaessa. Kyljysselän lihan laadunseuranta ei välttämättä takaa sian muiden lihasten laadun säilymistä muuttumattomana. Siksi kinkuneri lihasten laatua selvitettiin vuonna 1999 tuhannen sian otoksella. Tulosten perusteella sisäpaistinlaatu (semimembranosus) päätettiin ottaa mukaan kantakoeindeksiin vuonna 2000. Sekä kyljyksen ettäkinkun laadun suhteen tavoitteeksi otettiin loppu-pH-arvon nostaminen ja värin tummentaminen.Koska lihan laadun periytymisasteet ovat matalia, olivat vuoden 1999 pienestä aineistosta estimoitujengeneettisten korrelaatioiden keskivirheet suuria. Tässä tutkimuksessa oli tavoitteena laskea luotettavatestimaatit kansalliseen sikojen jalostusarvostelulaskentaan käyttäen hyväksi kantakoetoiminnassavuodesta 2000 vuoden 2003 loppuun asti kertynyttä suurempaa aineistoaAineisto saatiin Suomen Kotieläinjalostus Osuuskunnalta (SKJO) ja se sisälsi havainnot yhteensä7685 yorkshire- ja 7467 maatiaissiasta. Näille liitettiin sukulaisuustiedot. Tutkitut ominaisuudet olivatkeskimääräinen kasvunopeus 30 kg -100 kg, lihaprosentti, lihan väri (L* vaaleus, a* punaisuus ja b*keltaisuus) ja loppu-pH mitattuna sekä kyljysselästä että kinkun sisäpaistista. Rodut analysoitiinerikseen monenominaisuuden eläinmallilla käyttäen DMU-ohjelmistoa. Laatuominaisuuksientilastollisessa mallissa oli kiinteinä tekijöinä sukupuoli, ikä kokeen alussa, viive teurastuksestaleikkuuseen ja satunnaisina tekijöinä eläimen additiivinen geneettinen vaikutus, pahnue, teurastuserä(samalta asemalta samana päivänä teurastamoon lähetettyt siat) ja satunnainen jäännöstermi.Kasvunopeuden ja liha-% mallissa malli oli muutoin samanlainen, mutta teurastuserän sijasta olikasvatuserä kiinteänä tekijänä ja viive oli jätetty pois.Periytymisasteet vaihtelivat 0,33 – 0,39 kasvunopeudessa, 0,39 – 0,47 lihaprosentissa, 0,12 – 0,20pH:ssa, 0,10 – 0,32 vaaleudessa ja 0,26 – 0,43 punaisuudessa. Geneettiset korrelaatiot kasvunopeudenja lihanlaatuominaisuuksien välillä olivat useimmissa tapauksissa matalia (alle 0,15). Sen sijaangeneettiset korrelaatiot lihaprosentin ja lihan laadun (erityisesti sisäpaistin laadun) välillä olivatkorkeampia ja epäsuotuisia. Kyljysselästä ja sisäpaistista mitattujen samojen lihanlaatuominaisuuksiengeneettiset korrelaatiot olivat korkeita, mutta kuitenkin selvästi alle yhden, eli pelkän kyljysselänsisällyttäminen valintaohjelmaan ei takaa hyvää kinkun laatua. Johtuen epäsuotuisasta korrelaatiostataloudellisesti tärkeän lihaprosentin ja lihan laadun välillä, on lihan laatu säilytettäväjalostustavoitteissa. Korrelaatio ei kuitenkaan ole niin voimakas, etteikö oikealla tavoitteidenasettelulla liha-% voida parantaa laadun siitä kärsimättä.Tässä tutkimuksessa estimoituja perinnöllisiä tunnuslukuja käytetään hyväksi kansallisessasikojen jalostusarvojen laskennassa. Lihan laadun valinnan tehostamisen jälkeen lasketut geneettisettrendit osoittavat, että lihan laatu on muuttunut toivottuun suuntaan.

Vaikka muutkin tekijät aiheuttavat vaihtelua ruoan ympäristövaikutuksissa, ratkaisevaa on eläinperäisen ruoan osuus. Siinä missä tarvittava muutos on helppo muotoilla, keinot muutoksen aikaansaamiseksi ovat moninaisia. Muutokseen tarvitaan sekä yksilöitä, elinkeinoelämän toimijoita, että poliittista järjestelmää.

Abstract:
In the U.S., states vary in the way they link the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). State practices that have come to be known as "Heat and Eat" (HandE) exploit a SNAP energy expense deduction in order to increase SNAP benefits. Sixteen states have used the practice at some point, with the earliest starting in 1995 and latest in 2013. This study uses variation in the timing of adoption of HandE across states to estimate the HandE's effect on SNAP participation. SNAP-LIHEAP participation links are also examined in relation to alternative state policies that bundle application costs. Using SIPP 2008 Panel data, the study employs a household fixed effects model to examine the impact of LIHEAP participation and the three SNAP-LIHEAP bundling policies on SNAP participation propensities. The results indicate that HandE policies cause a small increase in household SNAP participation, which is likely due to the fact that HandE provides additional benefits for SNAP participants. Categorical eligibility that links applications for both programs also generates higher differential probabilities of being on SNAP. These results are consistent with previous findings in the multiple program participation literature.

Abstract:
Abstract Non-pathological change in body weight and adiposity is one distinct adaptive feature that seasonal species undergo, and it can offer a novel way to study the mechanisms underlying body weight regulation and energy homeostasis. Changes in the expression and activity of metabolic enzymes are essential for the physiological adaptation seasonal species exhibit. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a key regulatory enzyme that controls the energy homeostasis both on cellular and whole-body level. In this thesis, the main focus was to clarify how seasonal adaptation affects AMPK and its downstream target in lipid metabolism, acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), in different metabolic tissues of two model species with diverse wintering strategies: the raccoon dog and the Djungarian hamster. In addition, the effect of periodic fasting on the raccoon dog skeletal muscle was studied. It was observed that seasonal differences in AMPK and ACC expression were evident mainly in adipose tissues of both species. AMPK was down-regulated in white adipose tissue (WAT) of the winter-adapted raccoon dog, whereas in the Djungarian hamster WAT, the abundance of AMPK increased in response to winter acclimatization. ACC expression was maintained or increased in winter in both species. The seasonal changes in AMPK and ACC expression observed, in particular, in adipose tissues reflects the wintering strategy of the species and presumably facilitates the lipid usage and/or preservation during wintertime scarcity. Raccoon dogs were quite resistant to the prolonged wintertime fast, as no changes were observed in AMPK and ACC expression levels in the WAT, liver or hypothalamus between the fasted and fed groups. Skeletal muscle function also appears to be well preserved, as there were no changes in the expression of proteins involved in insulin signaling, and the fiber type composition and muscle energy reserves were not affected. This thesis offers novel information on protein level changes in metabolic adaptation
Tiivistelmä Useat luonnonvaraiset eläinlajit ovat fysiologisesti sopeutuneet ravinnonsaannin vuodenaikaisiin vaihteluihin. Vuodenaikaisrytmiin kytketty rasvakudoksen määrän vaihtelu ja siihen liittyvät aineenvaihdunnalliset muutokset tarjoavat mielenkiintoisen tutkimuskohteen ruumiinpainon säätelyn ja energiatasapainon ylläpidon molekulaaristen mekanismien selvittämiseen. Oleellinen osa fysiologista sopeutumista ovat muutokset energia-aineenvaihduntaa säätelevien proteiinien ekspressio- ja aktiivisuustasoissa. Yksi keskeinen elimistön energiatasapainoa kontrolloiva entsyymi on AMP-aktivoituva proteiinikinaasi (AMPK). AMPK toimii solunsisäisenä energiasensorina ja säätelee energiametaboliaa koko kehon tasolla. Tässä väitöskirjatutkimuksessa selvitettiin talviadaptaation vaikutusta AMPK:n ja sen kohdemolekyylin, rasvahappojen biosynteesiä säätelevän asetyyli-CoA karboksylaasin (ACC), ilmenemiseen ja aktiivisuuteen eri kudoksissa. Mallieläiminä käytettiin kahta eri talvehtimisstrategian omaavaa ja eri lailla ruumiinpainoaan säätelevää lajia, kääpiöhamsteria ja supikoiraa. Lisäksi tutkittiin pitkäaikaisen talvipaaston vaikutusta supikoiran luustolihakseen. Tulokset osoittivat, että molemmilla lajeilla AMPK- ja ACC-pitoisuuksissa on vuodenaikaisia eroja erityisesti rasvakudoksessa. Supikoiralla AMPK:n määrä väheni talviadaptaation seurauksena, kun taas kääpiöhamstereilla talviakklimatisaatio johti korkeampaan AMPK-pitoisuuteen rasvakudoksissa. ACC-pitoisuus puolestaan säilyi samana tai oli korkeampi talviadaptoituneilla yksilöillä. Havaitut muutokset AMPK:n ja ACC:n ilmenemisessä kuvastavat supikoiran ja kääpiöhamsterin eroja talvehtimisessa ja havainnollistavat entsyymien oleellista osaa rasvavarastojen vuodenaikaisessa säätelyssä ja käytössä, mikä on edellytys eläinten selviämiselle yli talven niukkuuden. Lisäksi havaittiin talviadaptoituneen supikoiran olevan melko resistentti 10 viikon paastolle tutkittujen parametrien suhteen. AMPK- ja ACC-pitoisuus tai aktiivisuus ei muuttunut aineenvaihdunnallisesti oleellisissa kudoksissa (rasvakudos, maksa, hypotalamus) paasto- ja kontrolliryhmän välillä. Supikoiran lihasten toimintakyky vaikuttaisi säilyvän, sillä insuliinisignalointiin liittyvien entsyymien pitoisuus, lihasten solutyyppikoostumus tai energiavarastot eivät muuttuneet paaston myötä. Tämä tutkimus tarjoaa uutta tietoa proteiinitason muutoksista osana fysiologista sopeutumista

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Background: Education paves for students to help them attain the right knowledge they require to make a better life out for themselves and for the society around them. There are many factors and variables that need to be considered when making the decision to choose school. This study aimed to examine factors affecting the decision to choose school of acupuncture. Subjects and Method: A case control study was conducted in Health Polytechnic Ministry of Health Surakarta, Soepraoen Polytechnics in Malang, and Academy of Acupuncture Surabaya. A sample of 300 college students was selected by stratified random sampling. The dependent variable was decision to choose school of acupunc-ture. The independent variables were career guidance, academic program, education cost, financial support, college reputation, college promotion, parental support, and location. The data were collected by questionnaire and analyzed by a multiple logistic regression. Results: The decision to choose school of acupuncture increased by good career guidance (OR= 19.39; 95% CI= 3.84 to 97.84; p<0.001), good academic program (OR= 11.69; 95% CI= 2.57 to 53.19; p= 0.001), low education cost (OR= 11.89; 95% CI= 2.68 to 52.75; p= 0.001), high college reputation (OR= 10.71; 95% CI= 2.16 to 53.22; p= 0.004), good college promotion (OR= 6.03; 95% CI= 1.40 to 25.93; p= 0.016), financial support (OR= 22.66; 95% CI= 4.45 to 115.46; p<0.001), strategic location (OR= 9.54; 95% CI= 2.35 to 38.68; p= 0.002), and strong parental support (OR= 26.84; 95% CI= 5.74 to 125.52; p<0.001). Conclusion: The decision to choose school of acupuncture increases by good career guidance, good academic program, low education cost, high college reputation, good education promotion, financial support, strategic location, and strong family support.
