Abstract:
The population ecology of the diseases of the common dab (Limanda limanda L.) has been studied and the use of fish disease as a monitor of pollution in the marine environment reassessed. The diseases included in this study were lymphocystis disease, hyperplasia/papilloma, ulcer disease, inflammatory fat-cell necrosis, and X-cell disease. The interactions responsible for determining disease abundance were assessed by carrying out a detailed longitudinal field survey and interpreting the observed changes in abundance by reference to the population biology of the common dab, the abiotic environment, and the known biology of the diseases. The diseases were not evenly distributed within the host population. Significant differences in prevalence occurred between sexes, ages, and fish of differing maturity status. These were interpreted in terms of varying susceptibility of the host, the response of the host to infection and the dynamics of the diseases. Analysis of the age-prevalence relationships suggests that although some diseases have the potential for their abundance to be regulated this is not fulfilled. The temporal distribution of the diseases consisted of long-term trends, seasonal cycles, and short-term fluctuations. A variety of potential causal factors were highlighted including the spawning behaviour of the dab, temperature, and bacterial abundance related to environmental productivity. The patterns in the spatial distribution of the diseases were reflected in variation in prevalence on both large (˜100nml) and small scales (˜1nml). In this case the causal factors highlighted were salinity, host population density, and again bacterial abundance related to productivity. No effect of pollution on disease prevalence was demonstrated. Neither could the occurrence of lymphocystis disease be related to the concentration of chemical contaminants in the livers of dab.

Abstract:
The regulation of food-intake in Limanda limanda was investigated, including (a) the role of the stomach as a limiting factor in fish food intake, (b) the qualities of a diet dab respond to and (c) the dynamics of food intake. Fish fed on squid (4.0 U. g'', 76.2% moisture) ate similar daily rations whether fed three times daily or once per day; when fed every three days they were unable to maintain this intake. Fish fed on pellets (18.8 kJ. g'', 8% moisture) could maintain their average daily food intake for all meal intervals tested. After a satiation meal, food intake broadly increased with deprivation time for at least 96 hours with no clear indication that stomach volume was limiting. However, when the data was re-examined using a return map (where meal m is plotted against meal m-1) there was evidence that feeding was restricted by stomach fullness as the interval between meals exceeded 25 hours. Surprisingly such limitation did not occur at higher feeding frequencies. Three models of food intake were used to simulate food-intake data, in which the role of the stomach as a constraining factor was varied: 1) Food intake was assumed always to be completely limited by stomach volume. 2) Food-intake was assumed always to be driven by a systemic need 3) Food intake was assumed to be chiefly limited by a systemic need, but when this was high, stomach volume would constrain intake. Comparisons of experimental results with these models suggest that when fish are fed frequently, or on a high-energy diet, the stomach volume is probably not limiting, whereas for a low-energy diet, fed infrequently, stomach volume was limiting when systemic need was high. Dab adapted their food intake to diets of different water content (and therefore energy density). They also adapted the distensibility of their stomachs in response to the increased volume eaten; fish fed on pellets having less distensible stomachs than those fed on squid. Thus it is unlikely that stomach volume can limit food intake in the long term, unless food quality and/or meal timing is variable and the fish cannot adapt their stomachs to the diet/feeding frequency. Methodological trials proved that that observed stomach VI volume is a function of the measurement technique, as well as the diet history of the fish, and experiments examining stomach volume should take this into consideration. The question of what aspect of a diet L. limanda adapt to was examined by testing different models using path analysis, a method of inferential modelling of causal relationships, in an attempt to explain how food-intake is regulated. Dab were found to be adapting to both the energy content of the diet and to the individual nutrients. The dynamics driving food intake in groups of dab were investigated using non-linear time series analyses. These proved to be low-dimensional, significantly non-linear, deterministic systems. The data also suggests that such systems are either capable of occasional chaotic behaviour, or are on the edge of chaos i. e. complex dynamical systems. Thus food intake is under the direct control of few (two or three) variables, through which the many known factors that influence food intake must act. Comparisons were made with individuals and groups of Oncorhynchus mykiss, with a brief look at Merlangius merlangus and Dicentrarchus labrax. These results were similar to the dab, and so this dynamical behaviour may be a feature of teleost fish in general. Importantly the fact that individual trout had similar feeding behaviour to groups indicate that the findings were not a function of hierarchical dynamics. The significance of this finding should be that appetite control with these properties allows rapid adjustment of fish according to changes in diet quality.

Abstract:
Population density, growth and mortality rates, reproduction, feeding ecology and energy mobilization of dab (Limanda lmanda L) on the North Wales Coast have been investigated between 1998-2001. The total population number is estimated as 2.34 x 10 6. Average catch rates were lower in winterspring than in autumn-summer. 42 hr' in February 2000; 141 hr'in July 2000. Catch rates were generally higher at night than daylight: 1549 hr'at 02: 00 hr, 17 hr'at 10: 00 hr in November. The 2- year old fish form the dominant year class. There was seasonal variation in sex ratio (Females: Males). In the long-term data, in autumn, the females were more abundant (1.83: 1) in trawl catches but the contribution of the males increases in spring (1.15: 1). There were seasonal variations in length and weight relationships: the average relationship was nearly isometric (power bx3.0); in male W=0.01 x TL 91 and in female, W=0.01 x TL 3'04. April 1s' was established as the birthday of the fish and the greatest deposition of the opaque zone in the otolith occurred in summer. The male grows at a faster rate than female in autumn 2000: (Loo=25.7 cm; K= 0.30 y 1) and (loo=33.4 cm; K= 0.25 y-) respectively. The long-term average total mortality rate was significantly higher in males (Z= 1.95 y) than females (Z= 1.16 Y"). This difference was calculated to be largely due to the relatively higher fishing mortality rate on the males. There were cyclical cycles in the gonad, liver weight and condition factors. The peak spawning activity in males was in December-January whilst it occurred in February-March in females. In the 16-20 cm male, the maximum gonadocarcass ratio, GCR, (1.8 %) and hepatocarcass ratio, HCR, (2.9 %) were in January and August respectively. In female, the maximum GCR (17.1 %) and HCR (3.8 %) occurred in February. The GCR was at a minimum in spring-summer. The minimum HCR occurred in spring. The maximum condition factor (K) was in summer for male (K=0.97) and female (K=1.02) but, after spring spawning, declined to 0.67 and 0.72 respectively. The maximum average oocyte diameter (0.56-0.67 mm) was observed in fully ripe fish in the spawning season but, after spring spawning, reduced to between 0.10-0.22 mm. The total estimated egg production was 2.47 x 10 ' eggs but the average per mature female was 3.51 x 105 eggs. Relative fecundity declined from 3045 eggs g' in fish aged I to 1917 eggs g' in fish aged 8. The fecundity-total length (F= 41.6 TL IN) and fecunditysomatic weight (F= 4804SW 0.88) relationships are estimated to be good predictors of dab fecundity. In autumn 2000, the length (Lw%) and age (A w%) at 50 % maturity were lower in males (L = 13.3 cm; Ate, =1.3 yr. ) than females (L = 18.0 cm; A =2.4 yr. ). The long-term averages showed relative stability in the females but a decrease in males, Ate, from about 2 years to about 1.5 years. Five major taxonomic groups dominated the diet of dab: the ophiuroids, bivalves, crustaceans, polychaetes and hydroids. The ophiuroid, Amphiura brachiata, predominated. However, the study suggests size-selective preference for some prey groups. The composition of polychaetes in the diet declined with increasing size of the fish; 22.9 % by weight in the 11-15 cm length group to 5.7 % in the 26-30 cm group. On the contrary, the bivalves increase in the diet with increasing size of the fish, from 11.2 % (by weight) in the 11-15 cm group to 31.4 % in the 231cm group. There is however a significant diet overlap (C; >- 0.60) between the size groups. In general, daily food intake was higher in late spring-summer than in autumn-winter. In May, for example, daily food intake for the 21-25 cm and 26-30 cm female dab was estimated as 1.49 g and 4.61 g respectively. In February it was 0.52 g and 1.76 g respectively. There were distinct seasonal changes in lipid and energy composition in the liver. Lipid content was significantly higher in the summer-autumn period than spring season. In September, it was about 62 and 69 % in male and female livers respectively. After spring spawning, the composition declined to 28 and 24 % respectively. The energy content per dry weight of liver peaked in October (8.50 kcal g' and 8.61 kcal g') in male and female dab respectively. Also, after spring spawning, the energy levels declined to 6.18 and 5.86 kcal g'' respectively. The energy requirement for routine metabolism and gonad development in a 20 cm female is estimated as 111.3 kcal but energy gained from food intake and carcass and liver reserves is estimated as 117.9 kcal. In male, the total energy requirement was 83.4 kcal but energy gained from food intake and carcass and liver reserves is estimated as 113.3 kcal. Feeding (in late autumn and winter) and carcass tissues are the main suppliers of energy for activity and the spawning process.

Abstract:
The aims of the work reported in this thesis were threefold; firstly, to investigate the effect of experimental exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on the immune response of dab (Limanda limanda), a sentinel species of flat fish for pollution studies, and rainbow trout (Oncorhynhus mykiss); secondly, to then go into the field to investigate the effects of exposure to PAHs on dab immunity through a major oil spill and thirdly, to increase current knowledge on the cellular immune functions of dab so as to provide better assays for biomonitoring purposes. Chapter 1 of this thesis is a general introduction to immunotoxicology, subspeciality of toxicology, which described brief accounts for both immunology and toxicology. Some brief accounts for the use of fish (lower vertebrates) in a pollution monitoring programme and the toxicology aspects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, were also given. In chapter 2, a laboratory exposure of animals to oil-contaminated sediment was established where four doses of diesel oil-based drilling mud used, i.e. 4, 8 (seen 500m from oil exploration platforms in the North Sea), 12 and 16% (w/w), with two exposure times employed, i.e. 2 and 4 weeks. Haematocrits and lymphocyte numbers tend to increase with low diesel oil doses, whereas high doses (particularly with longer exposure) gave significantly decreased values. Serum lysozyme levels were decreased, but serum bactericidal and anti-protease activities tended to increase following exposure. Kidney phagocyte respiratory burst and neutrophil migration activity also showed a trend to lower levels relative to control fish, whereas the number of antibody-secreting cells were increased with high drilling mud concentration. Lastly, there was a dose-dependent hepatomegaly. In chapter 3, rainbow trout were injected intra-peritoneally with an extract obtained from diesel oil-based drilling mud. Fish were exposed to different doses of extracts (made up to 2.4 mL/kg with olive oil), i.e. 0, 0.6, 1.2 and 2.4 mL/kg body weight (B.W.), for 6 weeks in the dose effect experiment.

Abstract:
Chapter 1 General introduction Section 1 contains a brief review of the structure and function of different muscle fibre types in teleost fish. Section 2 concerns the structure and function of fish liver including the classification of different liver cell types, the ultrastructure of fish hepatocytes and liver metabolism Section 3 The concepts of evolutionary adaptation and physiological acclimation are explained and an outline is given of some of the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms. Chapter 2 Seasonal influences on the biochemical composition of tissues in dab (Limanda limanda L.) Seasonal changes in the biochemical composition of liver and skeletal muscle have been investigated in juvenile dab (Limanda limanda L.) from the wild. Chapter 3 Seasonal influences on the ultrastructure of myotomal muscles of dab CLimanda limanda L.) Seasonal influences on the ultrastructure of myotomal muscles of the immature dab (Limanda limanda L.) have been studied. Fish specimens were taken from the same population of animals as in chapter 2. The fractional volume (%) of each fibre type occupied by mitochondria, myofibrils and lipid droplets was determined using a point counting morphormetric method. Chapter 4 Seasonal influenes on the ultrastructure of hepatocytes of dab (Limanda limanda L.) The dab (Limanda limanda L.) exhibited marked seasonal alterations in the ultrastructure of hepatocytes during the year. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) was more dilated and Golgi complex were highly developed in the hepatocytes of winter- adapted dabs. Mitochondrial profiles were also found to be well organized in the hepatocytes of winter caught animals. The hepatocytes in the summer-adapted dabs were characterised by containing enormous lipid droplets whereas those in the autumn-adapted fish were featured by numerous lipopigment-like granules. Different forms of hepatic glycogen and triglyceride were observed in the hepatocytes of dab (Limanda limanda L.) throughout the year. In the autumn, the hepatic glycogen and triglyceride existed in a form of loosely packed homogeneous masses throughout the cytoplasm whereas a more densely packed form for both glycogen and triglyceride was observed during the winter. Chapter 5 General discussion The major findings in the present study are discussed in relation to seasonal influences on tissue composition and ultrastructure of myotomal muscle fibres and hepatocytes in the juvenile dab (Limanda limanda L.). Some suggestions for further works are given.

Abstract:
The depletion of a great many conventional fish stocks is urgent testimony for fisheries management to evaluate risk and uncertainty in an interpretable manner. We propose a novel decision based approach to time-series analysis that explores the spectrum of alternative population trajectories, each of which can be formulated as hypotheses about the state of the fishery. In the first chapter, we evaluate the ability of different regions of the surplus production state space to describe the true state of three North American fisheries: Pacific cod, porbeagle shark and yellowtail flounder. We consider how environmental variability and life history traits may alter our assumptions about population productivity, and we lay the foundation for a decision based age-structured analysis. In the second chapter, the approach is extended further into the ecological realm by considering how community interactions between Atlantic cod and harp seals can be represented in state space. Our results indicate that since the fishing moratorium in 1992, harp seals have potentially lowered cod productivity, preventing their recovery.

Trigg, Colin. "Ecological studies on the bivalve Limaria hians (Gmelin)." Thesis, Heriot-Watt University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10399/2312.

Full text
Abstract:
Several ecological studies were carried out on the bivalve Limaria hians and the biogenic beds created by their byssal threads. Specimens used were collected from two populations located on the west coast of Scotland. Age, growth and population dynamics were analysed using several methods. Limaria hians were tagged using plastic tags or the chemical dye calcein, left for 1 year and growth marks in the chondrophore counted. To establish growth parameters marked or caged L. hians were placed in situ and examined after 1 and 2 years. In addition, quantitative collections of L. hians were made from the field every 2 months over an 18 month period, their length measured and numbers recorded. Sub-samples from these collections were used to analyse the sex ratio of the populations. It was found that a single annual growth mark was deposited in the winter and age could be determined by counting chondrophore growth marks; giving a maximum age of 10 years. Measurements of growth using different techniques gave a growth performance index between 2.51 and 2.61. Spawning of L. hians occurred in May and June resulting in peak settlement during July and August. A significant change in sex ratio with respect to shell length was found, indicating protandry. Indirect examination of age was attempted using stable isotopic analysis of δ18O and δ13C contained within the shell. To overcome difficulties found with the stable isotope technique, laser ablation mass spectrometry analysis was used to measure the ratios of trace elements. Two specimens each had a single valve placed in epoxy resin. Sequential lines were drilled along the surface of the valves and the carbonate gathered for analysis by mass spectrometry. From the remaining valve of each specimen a thin section was prepared and laser ablation performed. Limaria hians incorporated δ18O in equilibrium with the surrounding sea water allowing an estimation of ambient temperature at times of shell deposition. A sinusoidal pattern was seen in the isotopic analysis, yet it was not possible to accurately age the specimens by this method, although the approximate time of year when growth mark deposition occurred was obtained. A relationship was seen between the trace element Mg and seawater temperature; however, it is not believed that Mg/Ca ratios in L. hians can be used as a proxy for sea temperatures. Use of these techniques with L. hians is considered limited on account of the animal’s thin and friable shell. An investigation to determine the biodiversity of L. hians beds was carried out for two populations during the winter and summer periods. Cores were taken semi-randomly and the organisms removed from the nest material. Flora and fauna were identified and where possible enumerated. Univariate and multivariate analyses of the data investigated any differences between sites and times. A total of 283 species were found consisting of 16 phyla. Univariate analysis revealed significant differences between the species richness of the two populations, whilst multivariate analysis illustrated differences in the assemblage compositions between sites and times. This study indicated that, in terms of richness and diversity, L. hians beds are at least as rich as horse mussel and serpulid reefs. The rate of regrowth of L. hians nest material, following a simulated dredging impact was examined on an extensive L. hians bed. Within an area of complete coverage of the sea bed by a turf of L. hians nest material, the turf was cleared by diver from 10 0.25 m2 replicate plots and the sediment subsequently raked to simulate the passage of a scallop dredge. The areal extent and pattern of nest regrowth was recorded after 6 and 12 months. Over the initial 6 autumn and winter months treatment plots displayed a mean regrowth of 9.2% of the cleared area, increasing to 15% in the second 6 month spring and summer period. However, no significant difference in growth was found between these periods. After 12 months half the treatment plots exhibited <25% nest cover and none of them contained nest of a thickness comparable to the surrounding bed. Conversion of regrowth rates within the treated plots to the rate of nest advance along a linear front, gave a value of 3.2 cm per year, highlighting the susceptibility of this species-rich biotope to scallop dredging from which activity it may take a century to recover. The pressing need for the conservation status of this biotope to be reassessed is stressed. Its status as a biogenic reef should be accepted internationally and appropriate protective measures put in place.

The Makar-Limanov invariant ML(B) of an a-ne k-algebra B (with k a -eld, which will be typically assumed to be of characteristic zero) is a very important invariant, defined in terms of the kernels of suitable derivations of B called locally nilpotent derivations. The theme has connections to various central problems in Commutative Algebra, for instance, the Jacobian Conjecture, the Fourteenth Hilbert's Problem, and the Cancellation Problem, and has been investigated by many authors. In this work, after the presentation of basic concepts and results, our main goal is the explicit obtainment of the structure of ML(B) (as a k-algebra) when B is the coordinate ring of certain special a-ne algebraic hypersurfaces, to wit, the so-called Danielewski surfaces, as well as the famous Makar-Limanov 3-fold defined by x + x2y + z2 + t3 = 0.

The subject of this work is the use of a lightweight markup language (Markdown) to write dissertations and theses according to the ABNT rules. This document shows the devel- opment of Limarka, a tool that makes possible to write dissertations and theses with a lightweight markup language, and a experiment involving ten students writing a proposal of dissertations or theses. The methodology used was unstructured interviews with qual- itative analysis. The objectives of this research are: implement a tool to make possible write dissertations and theses according to the ABNT rules and evaluate its usage. The main outcomes of this research comes from two sources: 1) knowledge acquired from the de- velopment of the application. They are: a dissertation or a thesis cannot be produced from a tool that uses the DocBook format as a intermediary format. The abnTeX communite makes available templates according to the ABNT rules. The use of a Latex templates based from abnTeX text. And the generation of Latex Code from Markdown texts. 2) knowledge acquired from the analysis of experiments. They are: For the configuration of the template, the use of PDF form instead of making YAML code. There are evidences that Markdown and Latex are equivalent, in capabilities, and users will find the usage of a lightweight markup language easier to learn and use than Latex. The main conclusion of this work is that it is possible to write a dissertation or a thesis using a lightweight markup and produce documents according to the ABNT rules.

1, Cremastogaster sp. nov. 2, Crematogaster sp. nov. 3, Crematogaster sp. nov. 4.
The large number of species, peculiar morphology and its wide geographic distribution make the genus Crematogaster one of the most complex taxonomically among ants. About 780 species and subspecies were described and constants changes are made over time due to its morphological variety. A few revisions only for regional fauna were made for this genus. This study is a taxonomic revision of the species group Crematogaster limata. Six species are redescribed: Crematogaster brasiliensis Mayr, 1878, C. carinata Mayr, 1862, C. levior Longino, 2003, C. Limata Smith, 1858, C. longispina Emery, 1890, C. tenuicula Forel, 1904 and four new species are described: Crematogaster n. sp. 1, Crematogaster n. sp. 2, Crematogaster n. sp. 3, Crematogaster n. sp. 4. The taxa Crematogaster longispina var. boliviana was raised to species level and redescribed. Maps of the geographical distribution for it species and a key for species based in workers are presented.

Abstract:
Gene trapping has emerged as a valuable tool to create conditional alleles in various model organisms. Here we report the FLEx‐based gene trap vector SAGFLEx that allows the generation of conditional mutations in zebrafish by gene‐trap mutagenesis. The SAGFLEx gene‐trap cassette comprises the rabbit β‐globin splice acceptor and the coding sequence of GFP, flanked by pairs of inversely oriented heterotypic target sites for the site‐specific recombinases Cre and Flp. Insertion of the gene‐trap cassette into endogenous genes can result in conditional mutations that are stably inverted by Cre and Flp, respectively. To test the functionality of this system we performed a pilot screen and analyzed the insertion of the gene‐trap cassette into the lima1a gene locus. In this lima1a allele, GFP expression faithfully recapitulated the endogenous lima1a expression and resulted in a complete knockout of the gene in homozygosity. Application of either Cre or Flp was able to mediate the stable inversion of the gene trap cassette and showed the ability to conditionally rescue or reintroduce the gene inactivation. Combined with pharmacologically inducible site specific recombinases the SAGFLEx vector insertions will enable precise conditional knockout studies in a spatial‐ and temporal‐controlled manner.

Abstract:
In the works published by Valentin Kataev after 1966, his own past is reflected consistently. This tempts the reader and critic to interpret them as memoirs. However, such a label is too narrow and thus inaccurate. For Kataev, the past stimulates his imagination, and memory is the relentless, uncontrollable retriever of previous times. Rather than a factual resurrection of Kataev's past, his prose of this period is an adorned recreation. The critical "thaw", that followed Stalin's death, permitted the expression of sincere emotion in Soviet literature; sincere, in the sense that suffering that resulted from the implementation of the new plan could be revealed in prose and poetry. Kataev accepted this opportunity. In the stories that this study examines, Uzhe napisan Verter, Spiashchii, and Sukhoi liman, Kataev expresses how life from the past can remain and change for survivors in the present.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Izmir Region is located in the heart of the Western Anatolian coastline and forms a natural bridge between the Anatolian mainland and the Western Aegean. The region is connected to Central Anatolia through deep valleys and is linked to the Aegean Sea via many harbor sites along the coast. The architectural features and the other remains (such as pottery, metal objects etc.) found in and around those architectural context can provide the information about the genesis of the urbanization. With reference to the fortifications and bastions may show us that societies in question are concerned with some political problems. This study aims to understand how the scale of architecture changed from the Late Chalcolithic to the Early Bronze Age in the comperative basis of Aegean context particularly in Bakla Tepe and Liman Tepe. On the basis of architectural differences, two distinct community types may be postulated for Early Bronze Age sites in the Aegean. The fortified coastal site of Liman Tepe is an example of a centrally administrated early urban community with a strong economy. Bakla Tepe represents an affluent inland village or small town community interacting with large centers.

Liendo, Alvaro. "T-variétés affines : actions du groupe additif et singularités." Phd thesis, Université de Grenoble, 2010. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00592274.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis attempts to give the increasing importance of Ottoman port cities in the urban hierarchy during the nineteenth century and analyzes the urban transformation of these cities under the forces of changing administrative and socio-economic structure of the empire. The impact of European economic penetration and Ottoman Tanzimat Reforms were indicated as major causes for this changing structure. Beirut, being one of the major port cities of the Ottoman Empire is studied as a case study. The changing administrative and socio-economic structure of the Empire created an urban transformation which changed the city to a cosmopolitan trade capital from a small fortified port city.
