Abstract:

The overview of this paper is about municipal solid waste management in Cameroon and suggested methods for improvement. Garbage bins for sorting has been mentioned in this paper as one of the major infrastructure needed in all the areas, particularly in the low standards areas. The installation of garbage bins for source separation, building of transfer stations next to paved roads have been mentioned as one of the primary solution for both the waste vehicles and households. This will increase the waste collection system and will reduce illegal dumping of waste. Population, urbanisation and industrial growth has also been mentioned in this paper as one of the main causes of increase waste generation that has lead to illegal dumping of waste in unwanted areas. Low level of education, inadequate financial standings or resources, poor enforcement of waste management regulations and governance has often led to major waste management problems in Cameroon. This paper also presents a vital analysis of the distance between garbage bins and households as well as possible solutions. The method used in this paper is both primary and secondary data’s which has been explained below. The three filter theory and the waste hierarchy model have as well been used. The case study of Limbe municipality has been used to bring out waste management related problems and recommended possible solutions for improvement. Abstract:

L'assimilation de données permet de combiner d'une manière optimale un modèle numérique décrivant l'évolution de la composition chimique de l'atmosphère et les mesures disponibles. Dans cette thèse, l'assimilation de données est utilisée afin de caractériser les distributions troposphériques et stratosphériques de l'ozone (O3) et du monoxyde de carbone (CO). Le Modèle de Chimie Transport (CTM) MOCAGE (MOdèle de Chimie Atmosphérique à Grande échelle) est utilisé dans une configuration à deux domaines imbriqués avec les résolutions de 2◦ (global) et de 0.2◦ (régional). La technique variationnelle du 3D-FGAT est utilisée pour toutes les études que constituent cette thèse. Nous avons évalué la complémentarité des mesures satellites au limbe et au nadir aujourd'hui disponibles pour la caractérisation de l'UTLS (Haute Troposphère Basse Stratosphère) en assimilant ces deux types de mesures simultanément. Nous nous sommes en particulier intéressé à la propagation de l'information provenant des mesures assimilés dans le modèle et plus particulièrement, aux impacts de l'assimilation de mesures stratosphérique d'ozone en troposphère aux moyennes latitudes. Les principaux objectifs de cette thèse ont été de montrer la valeur ajoutée de l'augmentation de la résolution modèle pour l'assimilation de données et les effets synergiques de l'assimilation combinée d'un sondeur au limbe et au nadir. Des développements au niveau du système d'assimilation en domaine imbriqué à 0.2◦ ont été effectués. L'assimilation des données dans le domaine global est maintenant prise en compte et les conditions aux bords provenant des champs assimilés montre un impact significatif sur le domaine imbriqué. Dans un premier temps, nous avons assimilé les profils d'ozone stratosphériques mesurés au limbe provenant de MLS (Microwave Limb Sounder) afin d'étudier deux cas d'échange entre la Stratosphère et la Troposphère (STE)
Data assimilation combines in an optimal way a numerical model describing the evolution of the atmospheric chemical composition and the available trace gases measurements. In this thesis, data assimilation is used to characterize the ozone (O3) and the carbon monoxide (CO) distributions in the stratosphere and in the troposphere. The Chemistry Transport Model (CTM) MOCAGE (MOdèle de Chimie Atmosphérique à Grande Echelle) is used in a configuration with two nested domains at 2◦ (global) and at 0.2◦ (regional). To perform the assimilation experiments a 3D-FGAT variational method is used. We evaluate the complementarity of limb and nadir measurements available at the present day at characterizing the UTLS (Upper Troposphere Lower Stratosphere) region by assimilating simultaneously the two type of measurements. We particularly focus on the impacts of data assimilation of stratospheric ozone measurements on troposphere and conversely of tropospheric data assimilation on stratosphere. Showing the added value of the increased horizontal resolution in the UTLS assimilated fields and the synergistic effects of limb and nadir assimilation were the main objectives of this work. Development in the assimilation system have been made in the assimilation system with the nested domain. Data assimilation in the global domain is now taken in account and the boundary condition from the assimilated fields show significant impacts on the regional domain. Firstly, we assimilate stratospheric ozone profiles from MLS (Microwave Limb Sounder) to investigate two Stratosphere-Troposphere Exchange (STE) case studies.

Abstract:

This research is carried out to explore the factors that influence visitors to choose a particular destination for a visit or the attributes visitors consider necessary to quality a place as a potential destination for a visit. This research is a comparative study on tourism destination marketing conducted in a town in a developed country; Gotland Island in Sweden and a town in a developing country; Limbe city in Cameroon. This research tries test two hypothesis, which were formulated by the researcher.

Hypothesis I; visitors consider particular attributes in a destination before they visit it.

Hypothesis II; some attributes are inevitable in any destination choice decision.

The research contains ideas from 200 respondents, 100 visitors of Gotland Island, and 100 visitors of Limbe City, and the results support both hypothesis. The research also contains a comparison of the attributes visitors consider in Gotland Island and Limbe city. This brings out the factors that would be considered by visitors in a developed country and visitors in developing country.

Abstract:

Aggravated by rapid population growth, urbanization, and industrialization and most recently by climate change events, the availability of water especially in the third world is reaching critical proportions. This is aggravated by the non treatment of wastewater (sewage) and discharged of untreated wastewater into water bodies. The study focused on identifying and reviewing four wastewater treatment methods from a sustainability perspective; waste stabilization pond, constructed wetland, up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor and sedimentation/thickening tank systems suitable for the Limbe Urban Municipality (LUM) of Cameroon in Central West Africa with an estimated population of 120, 000 inhabitants and experiencing 4.7 per cent annual growth rate. The attractiveness of these four methods stems from their apparent energy efficiency, simplicity, robustness, low cost effectiveness in situations where as in the LUM, there are huge tracts of available land, warm temperatures, and their capacity to promote effluent re-use opportunities for various sectors. Issues of sustainability of the water supply and wastewater treatment systems, untreated sewage, and their contribution to escalating environmental and public health impacts in LUM (Cameroon) were critically evaluated and discussed with the aid of Kärrman (2000) framework approach that employs different sets of sustainability criteria (Environmental, Health and Hygiene, and Functional), sub-criteria and indicators. Results obtained reveal that water and wastewater treatment systems in LUM do not operate or conforms to sustainability perspectives. Inhabitants do not still have access to clean drinking water (an approximate 45 per cent) especially in the dry periods of the year, low sanitation coverage (with the tradition of sewage treatment in septic tanks and pit latrines), rising yearly public health impacts associated with water-borne (cholera, dysentery, malaria, typhoid fever and diarrhea) infections and 6 deaths reported in LUM. These leading problems are directly or indirectly linked to consumption of contaminated water or foods in different communities such as Mile II, Isokolo, Bonadikombo (Mile four) etc, and New Town areas and flood prone zones in the Limbe urban municipality.

Ce travail est relatif a l'etude des systemes d'exploitation en halieutique. L'objectif principal poursuivi est l'analyse de la dynamique globale d'une pecherie, a travers celle de la ressource, des flottilles, des techniques et pratiques de peche ainsi que de la dynamique sociale et economique du systeme peche. L'etude s'appuie sur le cas de la pecherie artisanale maritime au cameroun, une des pecheries ouest-africaines reconnues complexes pour son caractere multispecifique et multiengin, et du fait de son exploitation conjointe a la fois par des pecheurs et migrants, integres dans l'economie de marche. Cette complexite en fait un cas d'etude particulierement adaptee a l'approche globale et interdisciplinaire proposee dans cette recheche. La cote camerounaise est soumise a une tres forte pluviometrie, ce qui engendre une accumulation importante d'eau chaude et dessalee, drainee dans la baie de bafra a la fois par les pluies, les crues des rivieres et les courants de surface. Un systeme d'enquetes fonde sur le modele dynamique, approche utilisee ici, est presente. Les donnees recueillies au travers des enquetes sur les sorties de peche, la transformation et la commercialisation des produits de peche, ont ete analysees. Les resultats obtenus sont presentes, notamment sur l'effort de peche, la p. U. E. Des differents types d'unites de peche, les captures totales estimees et le cycle biologique de l'exploitation de l'ethmalose (ethmalosa fimbriata, principale espece debarquee), obtenu a partir des ecophases exploitees. Un exemple d'organisation sociale et d'interrelations liant les differents acteurs et les institutions intervenant dans le systeme peche, a ete expose a travers l'etude monographique du centre de peche de dockyard-limbe. Apres une analyse economique des differentes activites de la filiere (production, transformation, commercialisation), les differents comptes d'exploitation, la rentabilite des unites d'exploitation et les revenus generes par les differentes branches de la filiere sont exposes. Les resultats ainsi obtenus aident a mieux decrire les differents types d'exploitation de la ressource, a identifier les contraintes au developpement du secteur, et a proposer des recommandations visant a mieux conduire les problemes d'amenagement et de gestion des pecheries au cameroun.

Abstract:

Les performances des systèmes de veille IR aéroportés pour la detection de missiles balistiques sont limitées par les fluctuations spatiales de la luminance du fond de ciel. Cette thèse propose un nouveau code, FACLUM-2D, capable de calculer la fonction d'autocorrélation (FAC) 2D des fluctuations de la luminance atmosphérique, observées en visée quasi-horizontale depuis la stratosphere et spécifique à l'IR thermique. Les fluctuations du fond atmosphérique sont, dans ce cas, essentiellement dues aux fluctuations spatiales de la température et de la fraction massique de la vapeur d'eau. La prise en compte de ces dernières dans FACLUM-2D constitue la contribution majeure de ce travail de thèse. De plus, la détermination de la FAC de la luminance requiert la connaissance du coefficient d'absorption et de sa dérivée par rapport à la température et de la fraction massique de la vapeur d'eau. Pour cela, j'ai développé un code raie par raie pour l'IR thermique (RPR-IRT), permettant de tabuler la dérivée du coefficient d'absorption par rapport à la température et par rapport à la fraction massique de la vapeur d'eau avec une résolution spectrale de 10-4 cm-1. Faute de mesures expérimentales, le code FACLUM-2D a été validé avec des solutions analytiques pour un milieu homogène gris et comparé, dans la mesure du possible, à des codes de transfert radiatif standards. Les premiers résultats montrent, pour la première fois, l'impact significatif des fluctuations de la fraction massique de vapeur d'eau sur les fluctuations de la luminance. Une des perspectives majeures est d'étendre FACLUM-2D à une bande spectrale plus large, afin de couvrir tout l'IR.

Abstract:

Les aérosols jouent un rôle clé dans les processus stratosphériques. Par exemple, après une éruption volcanique importante comme celle du El-Chichon en 1982 ou du Pinatubo en 1991, ces particules ont provoqué une perturbation à la fois du bilan radiatif terrestre et de la chimie stratosphérique. L'estimation de ces différents effets requiert la connaissance de l'abondance, de la taille ainsi que de la composition chimique des aérosols. Le travail présenté dans ce mémoire a trait au développement et aux premiers résultats d'une expérience embarquée sur plate-forme ballon, dénommée BALLAD (BALloon Limb Aerosol Detection). Ce nouvel instrument a pour but d'étudier les propriétés diffusantes des aérosols stratosphériques en mesurant l'intensité (à 450, 600 et 850 nm) et la polarisation (à 850 nm) du limbe de la terre, pour une gamme étendue d'angles de diffusion. Une méthode d'inversion des luminances uniquement, obtenues en diffusion avant, a été développée afin de retrouver les profils verticaux du coefficient d'extinction et d'un paramètre d'asymétrie des aérosols. Cette méthode est appliquée à 3 vols ballon qui s'inscrivaient dans la campagne de mesures internationale SESAME (SEcond Stratospheric Arctic and Mid-latitude Experiment). Des comparaisons avec l'expérience satellitaire SAGE II (Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment II) ainsi qu'avec les expériences du laboratoire RADIBAL (RADIometre BALlon) et BOCCAD (Balloon OCCultation Aerosol Detection) sont discutées.

Abstract:

Building on the development of a research agenda, the research used best practices in the UK and other developed countries to design the aims and objectives from which the methods were developed. Based on the research agenda, trends in household behaviour in Cameroon were examined in order to identify, and generate baseline information to provide a sound evidence base essential for robust policy development in education, capacity building in composting involving the third sector organizations in Cameroon. To determine attitudes, Q methodology was used. Factor analysis produced nine and eight factors representing distinct behavioural patterns of public concerns, opinions and beliefs in household waste management in Douala and Limbe. Interpreting these factors revealed 12 attitudes to household waste management practices and this will be used to design strategies. A waste composition analysis found the organic fraction >60% with the lowest per capita waste generation (0.86 kg) in the high income residential area (HIRA) and the highest (1.38 kg) in the low income residential area (LIRA) of Douala in the wet season. In the dry season, the medium income residential area (MIRA) had the highest (1.11 kg) with the lowest (0.71 kg) in the HIRA. For both seasons in Limbe, HIRA had the highest while the LIRA had the lowest. Pearson correlation and regression was used to show the relationship between waste generation and household size. The research determined barriers and success factors for composting as part of a strategy. Barriers included household hazardous waste (HHW) and odour at composting sites because more than 50% of the composted waste was food waste with high humidity especially in the wet season. This affected public acceptance to composting. A success factor is that the market for compost is increasing and is expected to increase to 30% by 2013. Added to this, more than 50% of the participating households showed positive intentions and willingness to composting. Hence, composting is expected to be a major economic activity for Cameroonians and become a national practice

Abstract:

Infrainguinal bypass grafting is an established method in the treatment of patients with femoropopliteal and crural occlusive disease leading to critical lower limb ischaemia (CLI). However, complications related to surgical procedure are not negligible and percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) has emerged as an alternative. The present thesis covers some aspects of infrainguinal PTA in patients with chronic severe lower limb ischaemia.

The records of 217 patients undergoing 272 PTA procedures at various infrainguinal arterial segments were analysed. The indication for intervention was subcritical ischaemia in 76 limbs and critical ischaemia in 177 limbs. The role of duplex ultrasound examination in the selection of patients for PTA was retrospectively evaluated following a prospective validation of the method against angiography.

A technically successful PTA was achieved in 89%. The overall 30-day mortality was 2.7%. No patient underwent amputation directly related to failed PTA. The primary success rates at 12 and 60 months following femoropopliteal PTA were 40% and 27% compared, to 51% and 36% in limbs undergoing crural artery PTA. Primary success rate in limbs with SFA occlusion longer than 5 cm was only 12% after 5 years, compared to 32% if the occlusion was equal or less than 5 cm in length (p<0.01). In patients undergoing distal PTA through patent infrainguinal grafts, the primary and primary assisted patency rates at 3 years were 32% and 53%, respectively. The sensitivity of duplex scanning in the selection of lesions for PTA was less satisfactory in the popliteal and crural arteries compared to the superficial femoral arteries.

In conclusion, the results of infrainguinal PTA performed for treatment of subcritical or CLI seemed to be inferior to the results of surgical interventions reported in the literature. However, due to the fact that the PTA procedure does not preclude the performance of bypass grafting, it might be an alternative to surgical intervention in limbs with stenotic or short occlusive lesions.

Abstract:

Dans le but d’obtenir des plantes de vigne résistantes à la chlorose calcaire, le travail a été effectué en deux temps : essai d’obtention de plantes néoformées à partir de divers organes cultivés in vitro. Mise au point d’un test de sélection de plantes résistantes. Les résultats sont les suivants : des plantes ont été régénérées à partir de fragments de limbes foliaires cultivés sur un milieu dont la caractéristique principale est d’être constitué de macro et microéléments de Murashige et Skoog (1962) et d’inclure trois types de facteurs de croissance : acide indolyl β acétique, benzylamino purine et acide gibbérellique. Par ailleurs, un dispositif expérimental a été mis au point sur des boutures cultivées en milieu liquide contenant des ions bicarboniques et ferriques. Ce dispositif permet d’obtenir, pour les génotypes utilisés, un comportement vitro vis-à-vis de la chlorose similaire à celui observé en champ. Parmi les paramètres étudiés, la diminution de la masse de matière sèche, l’augmentation de la concentration en fer des tissus ainsi que la faible capacité d’abaisser le pH du milieu se révèlent être d’autant plus significatifs que la plante est sensible. A partir de ces résultats, des essais de sélection de plantes résistantes ont été réalisés et seront poursuivis.

The unique skeletal structure of the bat forelimb and hindlimb provides a new and exciting model for the field of evolutionary developmental biology, which seeks to reveal the molecular mechanisms behind vertebrate limb diversity. The digits of the bat forelimb, excluding the thumb, are considerably elongated and webbed. The hindlimb digits are free of webbing and are of uniform length, lacking the asymmetrical patterning of the forelimb. In this study, gene expression analysis has revealed that changes in the spatial and temporal expression patterns of the anteriorposterior patterning signal, Sonic hedgehog (Shh), and its downstream target, Patched 1 (PtcJ), have contributed to the development of the unique bat limb. The embryonic development of Miniopterus natalensis (Miniopteridae) is described for the first time and the expression patterns of Shh and PtcJ in the developing limbs of this species are compared to those in Carollia perspicillata (Phyllostomidae) and the mouse. Early in bat limb development (stage 14), Shh expression in the ZPA appears to be anteriorly expanded when compared to the mouse. This observation is in line with the reported expansion of Fgf8 expression in the AER (Cretekos et al. 2007) and reveals that an enhancement of the Shh-Fgf positive feedback loop may be responsible for the initial posterior expansion of the bat forelimb. Later in development (stage 16) Shh and PtcJ acquire a novel domain of expression within the interdigital tissue of both the bat forelimb and hindlimb. These expression patterns parallel the reported up-regulation of Fgf8, Gremlin and Bmp2 in the interdigital tissue of C. perspicillata (Weatherbee et al. 2006) and support the hypothesis that the Shh-Fgfpositive feedback loop is re-initiated in the interdigital tissue of the bat limbs. The cell survival and proliferation signals provided by the Shh-Fgf signalling loop most likely contribute to the lengthening of the posterior forelimb digits, the survival of the tissue between the forelimb digits and the extension of digits 1 and 5 of the hindlimb to the same length of the remaining digits. Limite [1931], filme escrito e dirigido por Mário Peixoto, é impossível de ser lido. A impossibilidade é, em parte, dada pelo próprio autor, que tornou o filme - e parte de sua obra - um todo esboço. Essa tese bosqueja três derivas sobre Limite. A estrutura é montada em cima do artigo de Eisenstein/Peixoto, Um Filme da América do Sul, tracejando a impossível leitura a partir da leitura fictícia. Na primeira deriva, historicidades concernentes ao fazer do filme e o seu redor. De Limite como projeto anacrônico do cinema inventado por Epstein e anulado por Rancière. A seguda deriva busca em Limite a "idéia de um filme soberano", a partir de Lyotard, atravessado ainda pela tragédia em suspensão epsteineana . Abstract:

This thesis, submitted as part of an M.A in Creative Writing, takes the form of a novel set in a small coastal town outside Cape Town and follows the life of Johanna, a maid to a pastor's family in the early 90s. At the centre of the novel is the relationship between Johanna and a first-person child narrator. Johanna arrives and sets out to undermine the household and social order with increasingly bold acts of violence. She is abusive but despite the sporadic abuse the narrator and Johanna develop an odd friendship. Her past is revealed in late night confidences (a paraplegic mother, a white employer who she identifies as family and a stint in a squatter camp where she loses her ID). Near the beginning of the novel the child and Johanna embark on a quest to obtain her birth certificate from her old employer (needed for a new ID). The journey is unsuccessful but signals the start of a kind of sympathy between the two protagonists (with insight by the narrator into Johanna's past). Johanna finds a kind of belonging in the neighbourhood and with the narrator's family, particularly with the neighbourhood children. She is like a child herself and they become a neighbourhood pack roving the streets on bicycle. But Johanna has periodic rages, throwing bricks or abusing pets and comes to focus her ire on the youngest member of the family, the narrator's youngest brother. When political forces at large come into play (as well as an increased sense of danger), the adults set out to anglicize the family in a half-baked attempt to emigrate. The children are sent to English schools and Johanna, sensing her loosening grip on the family ramps up her reign of terror. She recruits the narrator in a plot against her brother, a prank only half comprehended that she consents to in order to placate Johanna. When the time comes, they dress up as "bergies", capitalising on the paranoia of the time. They ambush her brother and what (at least for the narrator) was a game turns into a horrifying dismemberment of her brother. Johanna disappears for weeks but returns for one final confrontation outside the pastorie. After this Johanna disappears permanently from the life of the narrator and her family, and her brother is patched up with little visible impairment. Soon afterwards the family moves to a security complex, an island of safety in the crime-ridden reality of South Africa that recalls their European dream. Years later the narrator interrogates this suppressed chapter and longs for the Johanna of her childhood in relief to the cultural anonymity that has become her life. Constructed in episodes that succeed each other spatially rather than chronologically the novel seeks to reconstruct the childhood landscape while building obliquely to a tragic climax. The style is lyrical, referencing magical realism and could be read as an effort in prose poetry with paragraphs operating as lyrical units. Of interest to the story are themes of cultural and physical homelessness as well as language itself as it relates to a stable cultural identity.

Abstract:

The overall aim of this research was to improve scientific knowledge of the reactions that occur in, and the resulting properties of, lime mortars. Various aspects of lime mortar were Initially investigated. Firstly, Raman spectroscopy was used to study the hydration of lime which provided an insight into the phases present and their rate of hydration. Secondly, lime was produced from the calcination of egg-shell. The optimum calcination conditions found to produce the strongest mortar were 900°C for 12 hours. Egg-shell lime mortar had exceptionally high strength which was attributed to the negative effect of shrinking and compaction of the lime during curing.

Abstract:

The transit method, employed by Microvariability and Oscillation of Stars (MOST), Kepler, and various ground-based surveys has enabled the characterization of extrasolar planets to unprecedented precision. These results are precise enough to begin to measure planet atmosphere composition, planetary oblateness, starspots, and other phenomena at the level of a few hundred parts per million. However, these results depend on our understanding of stellar limb darkening, that is, the intensity distribution across the stellar disk that is sequentially blocked as the planet transits. Typically, stellar limb darkening is assumed to be a simple parameterization with two coefficients that are derived from stellar atmosphere models or fit directly. In this work, we revisit this assumption and compute synthetic planetary-transit light curves directly from model stellar atmosphere center-to-limb intensity variations (CLIVs) using the plane-parallel Atlas and spherically symmetric SAtlas codes. We compare these light curves to those constructed using best-fit limb-darkening parameterizations. We find that adopting parametric stellar limb-darkening laws leads to systematic differences from the more geometrically realistic model stellar atmosphere CLIV of about 50–100 ppm at the transit center and up to 300 ppm at ingress/egress. While these errors are small, they are systematic, and they appear to limit the precision necessary to measure secondary effects. Our results may also have a significant impact on transit spectra.

O Limbo, presente no Canto IV do Inferno da Divina Comédia constitui um elemento novo, introduzido por Dante à luz das concepções religiosas de seu tempo. O presente trabalho propõe uma leitura desse Limbo, enfatizando os aspectos que lhe são inerentes, como a sua localização, a sua descrição como um lugar estático, os suspiros reinantes e a existência de um castelo que abriga os grandes pensadores e poetas da Antigüidade. Essa diversidade de elementos torna o Canto IV um momento particular na viagem de Dante pelo Inferno, além de enfatizar questões ligadas à religião católica, entre elas o batismo como elemento essencial para a salvação da alma. Ainda dentro dessa pesquisa, aborda-se a questão da intertextualidade favorecida pela presença de muitos personagens da mitologia clássica e os seus autores. A trajetória do peregrino Dante através do Limbo permite-lhe a sua distinção entre os expoentes máximos da literatura clássica.
