Abstract:
This paper investigates the integration of on-line and off-line diagnostic algorithms for aircraft gas turbine engines. The on-line diagnostic algorithm is designed for in-flight fault detection. It continuously monitors engine outputs for anomalous signatures induced by faults. The off-line diagnostic algorithm is designed to track engine health degradation over the lifetime of an engine. It estimates engine health degradation periodically over the course of the engine’s life. The estimate generated by the off-line algorithm is used to “update” the on-line algorithm. Through this integration, the on-line algorithm becomes aware of engine health degradation, and its effectiveness to detect faults can be maintained while the engine continues to degrade. The benefit of this integration is investigated in a simulation environment using a nonlinear engine model.

The cell phones or mobile phone are required to be in the range of cell phones tower to work properly but due to the increment of the density of buildings in cities, most of the signals are absorbed by the buildings which make the cell phone services unstable. In this article, we have proposed an idea which combines fixed-line telephones and cellphones technology together to provide the stability of land-line phones and mobility of cell phones. Utilizing the integration of mobile phones and land-line phones user would be able to get a stable voice call service.

Full text
Abstract:
Whenever the data acquisition is restricted to line surveys rather than areal surveys, seismic processing is necessarily in two dimensions. In this paper it is argued that two‐dimensional (2-D) processing is preferably applied after transforming the point source responses into line source responses. The effect of this transformation is a correction of the amplitudes in the data. For single‐component acoustic data as well as for multicomponent elastic data a line source response is nothing but a superposition of point source responses. Hence, in principle a line source response can be synthesized by integrating point source responses along the desired line source axis. In practice, however, this integration cannot be carried out due to the incompleteness of the data. It is shown that the integration along the source axis can be replaced by an integration along the receiver axis. The underlying assumption is that the wavefields exhibit a certain type of cylindrical symmetry. For horizontally layered acoustic and elastic media this assumption is fully satisfied. For 2-D inhomogeneous media this assumption is approximately satisfied, provided the data are sorted in CMP gathers. Having transformed the point source responses into line source responses, the results may be considered as “true amplitude” 2-D data. Hence, proceeding with existing 2-D seismic processing techniques is then justified.

Abstract:
Westheimer, Gerald and Eric J. Ley. Spatial and temporal integration of signals in foveal line orientation. J. Neurophysiol. 77: 2677–2684, 1997. The discrimination of the orientation of a line improves with line length, reaching an optimum when a foveal line is ∼0.5° long. We studied the effect of eliminating sections of the line, of displacing them out of alignment, and of delaying them. Orientation discrimination thresholds are only a little elevated when a 25-arcmin line is replaced by three equally spaced collinear 5-arcmin segments. Two collinear 5-arcmin segments show better thresholds than a single one when they are separated by as much as 20 arcmin. But thresholds are impaired by bringing line segments out of collinearity by as little as 1 arcmin. Asynchrony of up to 50 ms can be tolerated, but when the middle segment of a three-line pattern is delayed by ∼100 ms there is active inhibition, thresholds being now higher than when the middle segment is absent. It is concluded that for signals to address the orientation discrimination mechanism optimally, they have to be contained inside a narrow spatial corridor and be presented within a time window of ∼50 ms, but that some spatial summation can take place over a length of ≥0.5° in the fovea. Because short lines made of black and white collinear segments do not have good orientation thresholds, whereas longer and interrupted lines do, it is concluded that what is involved is potentiating interaction between collinearly arranged neurons with identical orientation selectivity rather than summation of signals within the receptive fields of single neurons.

Full text
Abstract:
The K-distribution technique is presented for predicting nongray gas radiation in the presence of particle scattering. This technique transforms the otherwise formidable spectral integration problem from the frequency domain to the K or gas absorption coefficient domain. This transformation is made possible by the negligible variation of blackbody intensity and particle radiative properties with frequency within a gas band. Application of the K-distribution technique to an isothermal emission problem is made. Results are compared with those from the Monte-Carlo method, These results show that, with the K-distribution technique, the detailed absorption line structure within a gas band as well as the scattering effect due to particles can be simulated with great numerical accuracy and computational efficiency. Essentially, line-by-line accuracy is achieved without line-by-line spectral integration.

Abstract:
Chemistry as an unconventional computing medium presently lacks a systematic approach to gather, store, and sort data over time. To build more complicated systems in chemistries, the ability to look at data in the past would be a valuable tool to perform complex calculations. In this paper we present the first implementation of a chemical delay line providing information storage that can reliably capture information over an extended period of time. The delay line is capable of parallel operations in a single instruction, multiple data (SIMD) fashion. Using mass action and Michaelis-Menten kinetics, we describe the chemical delay line implementation featuring enzymes acting as a means to reduce copy errors. We also discuss how information is randomly accessible from any element on the delay line. Our work shows how the chemical delay line retains and provides a value from a previous cycle. The system's modularity allows for integration with existing chemical systems. We exemplify the delay line capabilities by integration with a threshold asymmetric signal perceptron to demonstrate how it learns all 14 linearly separable binary functions over a sliding window of size two. The delay line has applications in biomedical diagnosis and treatment, such as smart drug delivery.

Abstract:
An optical—geometrical illusion, described by Delbœuf and not familiar to specialists, is investigated. The results of two experiments show that the divergence between a bar filled with parallel slanting lines and a line drawn above it is clearly related to this angle of the lines which fill the bar. The illusion is already present when this angle is 10°, reaches its maximum at 20°, decreases at 30°, and almost disappears at 40°. These results are similar to those found for the tilt illusion, are slightly different from those found for the rod-and-frame illusion, and differ greatly from those found for the Zöllner illusion. The other variables considered—the distance between the slanting lines filling up the bar, the distance between the upper line and the bar, and the width of the bar—do not influence the illusion as much. Since either the line appears as diverging from the bar, or the bar seems inclined in relation to the line, the illusion should be considered a complex one. The small oblique lines inside the bar induce obliquity in the opposite sense in the display, but which of the elements is seen as diverging from the other depends on which of the two is established as the frame of reference.

Abstract:
Driven by the increasing stakeholder and societal pressures, organizations and supply chains face the multi-dimensional challenges of not only integrating economic, environmental and social agendas into their management systems but also driving continual sustainability performance improvement. Aiming to support organizations in this sustainable development challenge, this paper explores the strategic management principles of ISO 9001 and supply chain integration from the lens of triple bottom line sustainability. Derived from theoretical synergies, a conceptual framework for integration, measurement, and improvement of triple bottom line sustainability is constructed and a business diagnostic tool introduced to facilitate the implementation of the framework. The developed conceptual framework and diagnostic tool are verified through an expert panel-based Delphi study and positive relationships formulated between the management principles of ISO 9001, supply chain integration and sustainability management. The facilitating and catalyzing role of quality management and supply chain management principles for integration and improvement of organizational sustainability is outlined.

Abstract:
Simple pictures under everyday viewing conditions evoke impressions of surfaces oriented in depth. These impressions have been studied by measuring the slants of perceived surfaces, with probes (rotating arrowheads) designed to respect the distinctive character of depicted scenes. Converging arguments indicated that the perceived orientation of the probes was near theoretical values. A series of experiments showed that subjects formed well-defined impressions of depicted surface orientation. The literature suggests that perceived objects might be ‘flattened’, but that was not the general rule. Instead, both mean slant and uncertainty fitted models in which slant estimates are derived in a relatively straightforward way from local relations in the picture. Simplifying pictures tended to make orientation estimates less certain, particularly away from the natural anchor points (vertical and horizontal). The shape of the object affected all aspects of the observed-object/percept relationship. Individual differences were large, and suggest that different individuals used different relationships as a basis for their estimates. Overall, data suggest that everyday picture perception is strongly selective and weakly integrative. In particular, depicted slant is estimated by finding a picture feature which will be strongly related to it if the object contains a particular regularity, not by additive integration of evidence from multiple directly and indirectly relevant sources.

Abstract:
We construct an efficient quadrature method for the integration of the Galerkin weak form over general 3D polyhedral elements based on the radial integration method (RIM). The basic idea of the proposed method is to convert the polyhedral domain integrals to contour plane integrals of the element by utilizing the RIM which can be used for accurate evaluation of various complicated domain integrals. The quadrature construction scheme for irregular polyhedral elements involves the treatment of the nonpolynomial shape functions as well as the arbitrary geometry shape of the elements. In this approach, the volume integrals for polyhedral elements with triangular or quadrilateral faces are evaluated by transforming them into face integrals using RIM. For those polyhedral elements with irregular polygons, RIM is again used to convert the face integrals into line integrals. As a result, the volume integration of Galerkin weak form over the polyhedral elements can be easily carried out by a number of line integrals along the edges of the polyhedron. Some benchmark numerical examples including the patch tests are utilized to demonstrate the accuracy and convenience of the proposed method.

Power lines, exposed in the natural environment, are vulnerable to various kinds of meteorological factors. Traditional research mainly deals with the influence of a single meteorological condition on the power line, which lacks of comprehensive effects evaluation and analysis of the multiple meteorological factors. In this paper, we use multiple meteorological monitoring data obtained by multi-sensors to implement the meteorological risk assessment and early warning of power lines. Firstly, we generate meteorological raster map from discrete meteorological monitoring data using spatial interpolation. Secondly, the expert scoring based analytic hierarchy process is used to compute the power line risk index of all kinds of meteorological conditions and establish the mathematical model of meteorological risk. By adopting this model in raster calculator of ArcGIS, we will have a raster map showing overall meteorological risks for power line. Finally, by overlaying the power line buffer layer to that raster map, we will get to know the exact risk index around a certain part of power line, which will provide significant guidance for power line risk management. In the experiment, based on five kinds of observation data gathered from meteorological stations in Guizhou Province of China, including wind, lightning, rain, ice, temperature, we carry on the meteorological risk analysis for the real power lines, and experimental results have proved the feasibility and validity of our proposed method.

Abstract:
It can be deduced from previous studies that there exists a research gap in assembly line sequencing optimization model for mixed-model production lines. In particular, there is a lack of studies which focus on the integration between job shop and assembly lines using fuzzy techniques. Hence, this paper is aimed at addressing the multiobjective mixed-model assembly line sequencing problem by integrating job shop and assembly production lines for factories with modular layouts. The primary goal is to minimize the make-span, setup time, and cost simultaneously in mixed-model assembly lines. Such conflicting goals arise when switching between different products. A genetic algorithm (GA) approach is used to solve this problem, in which trapezoidal fuzzy numbers are implemented for variables such as operation and travelling time in order to generate results with higher accuracy and representative of real-case data.

Abstract:
This study describes two eye tracking experiments investigating the processing of poetry with and without enjambments. In Experiment 1, poetic fragments with authentic prospective (syntactically incomplete) or retrospective (syntactically complete) enjambments were investigated; in Experiment 2, enjambments were created — for the purpose of the experiment — from poetry that did not originally contain enjambments. We hypothesized that the layout of the text in poetic fragments would affect the degree to which integrative processes take place: in case of prospective enjambments, the syntactic incompleteness may preclude integration at the end of the line (before going to the next line), whereas retrospective enjambments may cause considerable re-interpretation at the next line. We indeed found significant differences in reading patterns between prose and poetry, poetry with and without enjambment, and poetry with prospective and retrospective enjambment. We interpret these results as favoring a dynamic model of language processing, where the amount and type of integration is determined by syntactic (in)completeness, semantic (in)completeness, but also the physical layout of the text.

Abstract:
Testing activities for software product lines should be different from that of single software systems, due to significant differences between software product line engineering and single software system development. The cost of testing in software product line is generally higher compared with single software systems; therefore, there should exist a certain balance between cost, quality of final products, and the time of performing testing activities. As decreasing testing cost is an important challenge in software product line integration testing, the contribution of this paper is in introducing a method for early integration testing in software product lines based on feature model (FM) by prioritizing test cases in order to decrease integration testing costs in SPLs. In this method, we focus on reusing domain engineering artifacts and prioritized selection and execution of integration test cases. It also uses separation of concerns and pruning techniques on FMs to help prioritize the test cases. The method shows to be promising when applied to some case studies in the sense that it decreases the costs of performing integration test by about 82% and also detects about 44% of integration faults in domain engineering.

Abstract:
In Russia, small-scale formula-feed plants do not use progressive manufacturing operations and hardware. There is, therefore, a need to offer the technical and organizational solutions creating an opportunity quickly and without the long-term interruption of production to integrate new processing lines into the composition of small-scale formula-feed plants. Prefabricated buildings based on a steel frame are optimum for placement of new processing lines. The new processing line is created as a modular structure, the components of which are modules with the dimensions of a standard cargo container, inside which the equipment is installed. The research is aimed at developing methods for modular processing lines integration into the composition of operating small-scale formula-feed plants. Formation of the modular line for a small-scale formula-feed plant is made on the basis of its process chart, while the structure of the line corresponds to the structure of the process chart. The modular processing line is created from modules fully completed by the manufacturer and ready for operation. Based on the work carried out, we concluded that the more efficient form of a modular processing line is a tower, the floors of which are modules. Modular processing lines of careful raw materials preparation and formula-feed processing can be integrated into the composition of operating small-scale formula-feed plant. The prefabricated building of an additional processing line is placed near the main production building of the existing formula-feed plant. The new modular line is connected by transport machines to bunkers for the operational storage of raw materials and ready-made products. The introduced method of modular processing lines integration into the composition of operating small-scale formula-feed plants will allow solving a problem of rapid implementation of new technical and technology solutions in the production of such enterprises.

SUMMARYA method for trajectory control in the joint space is presented. An acceleration profile is proposed for each segment of the trajectory. After a twofold integration a position trajectory is obtained with advantageous characteristics. The position trajectory is completely dynamically balanced; it exhibits continuity up to the third derivative of the position. This way, minimum requirements are imposed on the actuators. The technique delivers predictable results since the trajectory deviates only slightly from a straight line connection between successive joint coordinates. Very limited computational effort is required.

Abstract:
Pursuit and perception both require accurate information about the motion of objects. Recovering the motion of objects by integrating the motion of their components is a difficult visual task. Successful integration produces coherent global object motion, while a failure to integrate leaves the incoherent local motions of the components unlinked. We compared the ability of perception and pursuit to perform motion integration by measuring direction judgments and the concomitant eye-movement responses to line-figure parallelograms moving behind stationary rectangular apertures. The apertures were constructed such that only the line segments corresponding to the parallelogram's sides were visible; thus, recovering global motion required the integration of the local segment motion. We investigated several potential motion-integration rules by using stimuli with different object, vector-average, and line-segment terminator-motion directions. We used an oculometric decision rule to directly compare direction discrimination for pursuit and perception. For visible apertures, the percept was a coherent object, and both the pursuit and perceptual performance were close to the object-motion prediction. For invisible apertures, the percept was incoherently moving segments, and both the pursuit and perceptual performance were close to the terminator-motion prediction. Furthermore, both psychometric and oculometric direction thresholds were much higher for invisible apertures than for visible apertures. We constructed a model in which both perception and pursuit are driven by a shared motion-processing stage, with perception having an additional input from an independent static-processing stage. Model simulations were consistent with our perceptual and oculomotor data. Based on these results, we propose the use of pursuit as an objective and continuous measure of perceptual coherence. Our results support the view that pursuit and perception share a common motion-integration stage, perhaps within areas MT or MST.

Abstract Long Interspersed Elements (LINEs), also known as non-LTR retrotransposons, encode a multifunctional protein that reverse transcribes its mRNA into DNA at the site of insertion by target primed reverse transcription. The second half of the integration reaction remains very poorly understood. Second-strand DNA cleavage and second-strand DNA synthesis were investigated in vitro using purified components from a site-specific restriction-like endonuclease (RLE) bearing LINE. DNA structure was shown to be a critical component of second-strand DNA cleavage. A hitherto unknown and unexplored integration intermediate, an open ‘4-way’ DNA junction, was recognized by the element protein and cleaved in a Holliday junction resolvase-like reaction. Cleavage of the 4-way junction resulted in a natural primer-template pairing used for second-strand DNA synthesis. A new model for RLE LINE integration is presented.

Abstract A significant portion of human cancers are due to viruses integrating into human genomes. Therefore, accurately predicting virus integrations can help uncover the mechanisms that lead to many devastating diseases. Virus integrations can be called by analysing second generation high-throughput sequencing datasets. Unfortunately, existing methods fail to report a significant portion of integrations, while predicting a large number of false positives. We observe that the inaccuracy is caused by incorrect alignment of reads in repetitive regions. False alignments create false positives, while missing alignments create false negatives. This paper proposes SurVirus, an improved virus integration caller that corrects the alignment of reads which are crucial for the discovery of integrations. We use publicly available datasets to show that existing methods predict hundreds of thousands of false positives; SurVirus, on the other hand, is significantly more precise while it also detects many novel integrations previously missed by other tools, most of which are in repetitive regions. We validate a subset of these novel integrations, and find that the majority are correct. Using SurVirus, we find that HPV and HBV integrations are enriched in LINE and Satellite regions which had been overlooked, as well as discover recurrent HBV and HPV breakpoints in human genome-virus fusion transcripts.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The human cytidine deaminase APOBEC3G (A3G) and other APOBEC3 proteins exhibit differential inhibitory activities against diverse endogenous retroelements and retroviruses, including Vif-deficient human immunodeficiency virus type 1. The potential inhibitory activity of human APOBEC proteins against long interspersed element 1 (LINE-1) has not been fully evaluated. Here, we demonstrate inhibition of LINE-1 by multiple human APOBEC3 cytidine deaminases, including previously unreported activity for A3DE and A3G. More ancient members of APOBEC, cytidine deaminases AID and APOBEC2, had no detectable activity against LINE-1. A3A, which did not form high-molecular-mass (HMM) complexes and interacted poorly with P bodies, was the most potent inhibitor of LINE-1. A3A specifically recognizes LINE-1 RNA but not the other cellular RNAs tested. However, in the presence of LINE-1, A3A became associated with HMM complexes containing LINE-1 RNA. The ability of A3A to recognize LINE-1 RNA required its catalytic domain and was important for its LINE-1 suppression. Although the mechanism of LINE-1 restriction did not seem to involve DNA editing, A3A inhibited the accumulation of nascent LINE-1 DNA, suggesting interference with LINE-1 reverse transcription and/or integration or intracellular movement of LINE-1 ribonucleoprotein. Thus, association with P bodies or cellular HMM complexes could not predict the potency of APOBEC3 anti-LINE-1 activities. The catalytic domain of APOBEC3 proteins may be important for proper folding and target factors such as RNA or protein interaction in addition to cytidine deamination.

Quantification of the inspection time when the smart logic concept was used revealed a throughput increase of 23% on average, while consistency of the automatic morphological accuracy was preserved as confirmed by in-line mechanical profilometry. The morphology characterization is discussed with respect to the electrical performances at die level.

Abstract:
This paper outlines a new method for performing base line corrections on accelerograms generated by the quick-release dynamic testing method. These accelerograms are produced when highway bridges are subjected to dynamic excitations by initially deforming the bridge structure and subsequently quick-releasing the loads causing the deformation. This base line correction method is developed in such a way that the step function character of the quick-release base line is preserved. It is this feature which allows the static deformations of the structure to be recovered by integrating the accelerograms. The reliability of the method is demonstrated by a series of laboratory measurements comparing the displacement time series obtained by double integration to independently measured displacement responses. These laboratory comparisons indicate that the offset displacements are accurate to within about 5% on the average. The method was applied on accelerograms obtained during a quick-release full-scale test of the Meloland Road Overcrossing, and some examples of this application are presented.

Abstract:
Abstract The role of the left angular gyrus (AG) in language processing remains unclear. In this study, we used TMS to test the hypothesis that the left AG causally supports the processes necessary for context-dependent integration and encoding of information during language processing. We applied on-line TMS over the left AG to disrupt the on-line context-dependent integration during a language reading task, specifically while human participants integrated information between two sequentially presented paragraphs of text (“context” and “target” paragraphs). We assessed the effect of TMS on the left AG by asking participants to retrieve integrated contextual information when given the target condition as cue in a successive memory task. Results from the memory task showed that TMS applied over the left AG during reading impaired the formation of integrated context-target representation. These results provide the first evidence of a causal link between the left AG function, on-line information integration, and associative encoding during language processing.

Abstract:
The partitioning of pectinases in the poly(ethylene glucol)4000/ammonium sulpohate system was studied and also its application for enzymes extraction from the top phase of the poly(ethylene glucol)4000/crude dextran system. Almost complete one-sided partition of endo-pectinase and exo-pectinase to the bottom phase of the polymer/salt system was achieved at a tie-line length of 37.16 %. The concentration factors were 1.73 and 3.25, respectively. The highest total endo- and exo-pectinase yields (72.41 % and 69.46 % respectively) were obtained by integration of the polymer/polymer system at a tie-line of 8.61 % and a high phase volume ratio and the polymer/salt system at a tie-line of 30.23%and a low phase volume ratio. Integration of the partitioning at a high tie-line length in the polymer/polimer and a low tie-line length in the polymer/salt system resulted in a total concentration factor of 1.5 and a purification of 1.66 fold for exo-pectinase. The addition of phosphate to this integrated system improved the total concentration factor and purification fold of the activity to 1.73 and 2.14, respectively.

Abstract:
The line heating process has been used to create curved surfaces of ship structures. However, because it depends on a worker's skill and experience, it has been a factor in preventing the automation of shipyards and in consuming labor costs. In this paper, to reduce the trial-and-error procedure of line heating work by simulating the deforming process of a plate, a finite-element analysis method is proposed. A new element, called the line heating element, is defined and applied. The line heating element is assumed to have orthotropic material property. Shrinkage forces and moments resulting from line heating are obtained by integration of inherent strains formed by local heating and cooling. The shrinkage forces and moments at the inherent strain region are converted to equivalent nodal forces by the energy principle. Results calculated using the line heating element show good agreement with the results obtained by the commercial finite-element analysis code.

Abstract:
Control of action occurs at different stagesof the executive process, in particular at those of sensory-motor integration and conscious monitoring. The aim of this study was to determine the implication of the prefrontal cortex in the control of action. For that purpose, we compared the performance of 15 patients with frontal lobe lesions and 15 matched controls on an experimental paradigm generating a conflict between the action planned and the sensory-motor feedback. Subjects had to trace a sagittal line witha stylus on a graphic tablet. The hand was hidden by a mirror on which the traced line, processed by a computer, was projected. Without informing the subjects, the line traced was modified by introducing a bias to the right, which increased progressively from 2° to 42°. To succeed the task, subjects had to modify their motor program and deviate their hand in the opposite direction. The sensory-motor adjustment to the bias was evaluated by the surface between the line traced and the ideal line to compensate for the deviation. The awareness of the conflict was measured by the angle of the bias at which subjects expressed the feeling that the line they traced was not the same as the line they saw. The deviation was similarly compensated for by patients and controls until24°. Then 14 controls but only3 patients were aware of a conflict. After that, the variability of performance increased significantly for the unaware patients. These results suggest that the prefrontal cortex is required at the level of conscious monitoring of actions, but not at the level of sensory-motor integration.

Abstract:
Perceptual organization is the process of grouping scene elements into whole entities. A classic example is contour integration, in which separate line segments are perceived as continuous contours. Uncertainty in such grouping arises from scene ambiguity and sensory noise. Some classic Gestalt principles of contour integration, and more broadly, of perceptual organization, have been re-framed in terms of Bayesian inference, whereby the observer computes the probability that the whole entity is present. Previous studies that proposed a Bayesian interpretation of perceptual organization, however, have ignored sensory uncertainty, despite the fact that accounting for the current level of perceptual uncertainty is one of the main signatures of Bayesian decision making. Crucially, trial-by-trial manipulation of sensory uncertainty is a key test to whether humans perform near-optimal Bayesian inference in contour integration, as opposed to using some manifestly non-Bayesian heuristic. We distinguish between these hypotheses in a simplified form of contour integration, namely judging whether two line segments separated by an occluder are collinear. We manipulate sensory uncertainty by varying retinal eccentricity. A Bayes-optimal observer would take the level of sensory uncertainty into account—in a very specific way—in deciding whether a measured offset between the line segments is due to non-collinearity or to sensory noise. We find that people deviate slightly but systematically from Bayesian optimality, while still performing “probabilistic computation” in the sense that they take into account sensory uncertainty via a heuristic rule. Our work contributes to an understanding of the role of sensory uncertainty in higher-order perception.

Reconstructed Raman images of the distribution of polystyrene and polyethylene were obtained by line-imaging, with the use of univariate and multivariate processing of the spectral data. Multiple sets of microscopic Raman spectral line-images were acquired with line-focused illumination, a motorized translation stage to move the sample perpendicular to the illumination line, and a holographic imaging spectrograph equipped with a 2D detector. The line-imaged raw spectral data were processed with the use of both a simple univariate method (single-band integration) and a more sophisticated multivariate method (principal component analysis with eigenvector rotation) to generate two-dimensional Raman images representing spatial distribution of the polymers. In the spectral range employed (900–1700 cm−1), suitable bands could be found for univariate processing of the polystyrene and polyethylene images. The principal component analysis method gave equivalent separation of the images, but only if the entire spectral window was employed to generate the eigenvectors.
