Abstract:
A system for the extraction and storage of line and region data from digitized engineering line drawings, first proposed by Watson et.al.[3] and further developed by Bixler et.al.[4], is completed. As a means for the automatic analysis of picture content, a model based recognizer for line patterns is developed. The pattern matcher uses a simple scheme to decompose a line drawing into basic parts: strokes and junctions, and then finds graph isomorphisms between known line pattern models stored in a database and portions of the image line data. Abstract:
For centuries, architectural drawing has been considered one of the most effective representational tools, representing buildings and communicating architectural designs between architects and non-architects. It conveys information by using a set of graphic codes, which then becomes a message that allows architectural drawing not only to be read at a basic level, but also to be decoded. However, the codes have over time become internalised and play out as a private language that excludes non-architects. The use of particular codes within an architectural drawing leads to difficulties in readin

This thesis presents methods for the automatic creation of boundary-representation models of polyhedral objects from single line drawings depicting the objects. This topic is important in that automated interpretation of freehand sketches would remove a bottleneck in current engineering design methods. The thesis does not consider conversion of freehand sketches to line drawings or methods which require manual intervention or multiple drawings. Abstract:
The design of an efficient, low-cost system for automatically converting a hardcopy technical drawing into a highly compressed electronic representation is the motivation for this work. An improved method for extracting line and region information from a typical engineering drawing is presented. Finally, a technique for creating a highly compressed mathematical representation (based on spline approximations) for the drawing is presented.<br>M.S.
