Abstract:
FAULT LINE examines the fragile humanity connected to the themes of sexuality, violence, addiction, family dynamics, and death. The book is not broken into sections; rather, as poems build upon one another to explore a narrative arc, FAULT LINE tracks a single speaker’s experience from girlhood to the verge of independent womanhood. The speaker employs formal structures such as the prose poem, sestina, and particularly the list poem to examine the fluidity of inner experience and also the culture at large while challenging the narrow definitions of femininity and masculinity. FAULT LINE works to not only address the question of blame but also the literal breaks in lines of poetry. By looking at a single speaker’s struggle, the book, like life, is both humorous and horrifying.

Langman, Philip J. "When is a Stokes line not a Stokes line?" Thesis, University of Southampton, 2005. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/336279/.

Full text
Abstract:
During the course of a Stokes phenomenon, an asymptotic expansion can change its form as a further series, prefactored by an exponentially small term and a Stokes multiplier, appears in the representation. The initially exponentially small contribution may nevertheless grow to dominate the behaviour for other values of the asymptotic or associated parameters. We introduce the concept of a higer order Stokes phenomenon, at which a Stokes multiplier itself can change value. We show that the higher order Stokes phenomenon can be used to explain the apparent sudden birth of Stokes lines at regular points, why some Stokes lines are irrelevant to a given problem and why it is indespensible to the proper derivation of expansions that involve three or more possible asymptotic contributions. We provide an example of how the higher order Stokes phenomenon can have important effects on the large time behaviour of linear partial differential equations. Subsequently we apply these techniques to Burgers equation, a non-linear partial differential equation developed to model turbulent fluId flow. We find that the higher order Stokes phenomenon plays a major, yet very subtle role in the smoothed shock wave formation of this equation.

Debugne, Antoine Louis René. "A study of round, line-like and meandering turbulent fountains." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2018. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/284881.

Full text
Abstract:
The dynamics of different classes of turbulent and miscible fountains are stud- ied: from classic axisymmetric fountains issuing from round sources, to confined fountains propagating in a quasi-two-dimensional environment, to line fountains which form when release conditions are approximately two-dimensional at the source. Each class is characterised by distinct dynamical behaviour, which this the- sis analyses both through theoretical arguments and experimental measurements. A model for the entrainment of ambient fluid into a fluctuating fountain top is developed and implemented into a first complete description for round fountains. The solutions of the resulting 'three-region-model' lie in improved agreement with available data and, uniquely, do not diverge near the top of the fountain. Next, con- fined fountains (unexplored to date) are classified into four flow regimes and their behaviour collapsed according to a single governing parameter that captures the severity of confinement. Finally, new experiments on line foutains shed light on the quasi-steady structure of these flows, revealing (and motivating) a strong con- nection between their motion in the vertical and lateral planes. Round, confined and line fountains are then contrasted in the conclusions, where we reflect on what is required to progress towards a unified theory of turbulent fountains.

Hermansson, Andreas. "Simulation of line fault locator on HVDC Light electrode line." Thesis, University West, Department of Engineering Science, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hv:diva-2620.

Full text
Abstract:

In this bachelor thesis, cable fault locators are studied for use on the overhead electrode lines in the HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) Light project Caprivi Link. The cable fault locators studied operates with the principle of travelling waves, where a pulse is sent in the tested conductor. The time difference is measured from the injection moment to the reflection is received. If the propagation speed of the pulse is known the distance to the fault can be calculated. This type of unit is typically referred to as a TDR (Time Domain Reflectometer). The study is performed as a computer simulation where a simplified model of a TDR unit is created and applied to an electrode line model by using PSCAD/EMTDC. Staged faults of open circuit and ground fault types are placed at three distances on the electrode line model, different parameters of the TDR units such as pulse width and pulse amplitude along with its connection to the electrode line are then studied and evaluated. The results of the simulations show that it is possible to detect faults of both open circuit and ground fault types with a suitable TDR unit. Ground faults with high resistance occurring at long distances can be hard to detect due to low reflection amplitudes from the injections. This problem can somewhat be resolved with a function that lets the user compare an old trace of a “healthy” line with the new trace. The study shows that most of the faults can be detected and a distance to the fault can be calculated within an accuracy of ± 250 m. The pulse width of the TDR needs to be at least 10 μs, preferable 20 μs to deliver high enough energy to the fault to create a detectable reflection. The pulse amplitude seams to be of less significance in this simulation, although higher pulse amplitude is likely to be more suitable in a real measurement due to the higher energy delivered to the fault. The Hipotronics TDR 1150 is a unit that fulfil these requirements and should therefore be able to work as a line fault locator on the electrode line.

Ramos, Toriq. "Ultrasonic cleaning line walker for high voltage power line insulators." Thesis, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11838/3069.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MEng (Electrical Engineering))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018
This study investigates the feasibility to clean the insulators on live high voltage power lines autonomously, using ultrasound. Faulty and contaminated insulators on high voltage power lines cause flashovers, which contribute to load shedding and expensive repairs. Turning off the power in order to perform maintenance or clean insulators is a concern as it disrupts nearby businesses and homes. Regular maintenance of equipment on High voltage transmission lines (HVTL) is required to avoid major faults, thus saving money, and minimizing the pressure on the grid. Advancements in the field of robotics have catered for a solution to this concern. The study is divided into two sections; cleaning insulators using ultrasound and a line walker to navigate the high voltage transmission lines. The cleaning station was developed using a peculiar ultrasonic delivery method. The transducer is suspended 2 mm above the insulator and water is pumped into the gap between the two surfaces. The ultrasound is then applied to a small volume of water trapped by the face of the transducer using the phenomenon known as water surface tension or skin effect. A 12 V generator controlled by a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) circuit delivers over 300 V peak to peak to the transducer via a push pull transformer. The station is equipped with a 28 kHz piezoelectric transducer governed by an admittance locking routine. The generator tracks the resonant frequency of the transducer to ensure maximum power is utilised for cleaning the contaminated area.. This peculiar delivery technique effectively cleans insulators contaminated with grease, boasts short cleaning times, and only requires a small quantity of water. A four wheeled line walker was then designed in order to transport the cleaning station to the contaminated insulators. Each wheel propels the line walker forward at 0.1 m/s, and a uniquely shaped leg mechanism couples them to the chassis. The four legs are capable of independently removing the wheels from the line to avoid obstacles, and a 16-bit Atmega 2560 microcontroller monitors and controls all on-board devices and moving parts. Limit switches, an accelerometer and an ultrasonic distance sensor allow the robot to navigate around obstacles such as strain clamps, vibration dampers and indicating spheres. The line walker is capable of maintaining a balanced horizontal position while navigating the line. A scaled prototype of the line walking robot was manufactured and tested in a laboratory environment. The results prove that the robot can effectively navigate around obstacles while the system is run completely autonomously. The study provides proof of concept and enough evidence to suggest that the ultrasonic cleaning line walker is a feasible project with great potential.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis specifies how Franz Brentano inspired some of his students and how those students, in their turn, influenced the next generation of psychologists. After outlining the essentials of Aristotle's psychology, the thesis explains some general positions that Brentano borrowed from Aristotle. It goes on to relate Brentano's concepts of 'presentation,' 'unity of consciousness,' and 'difference between the mental and physical,' as well as his call for a 'science of the mind' to ideas of Christian von Ehrenfels, Carl Stumpf and Alexius Meinong.
Ehrenfels thought that a mental element, which he named gestalt quality, explains why a string of presentations has a certain form. The thesis then looks at a book of Edgar Rubin, even though Rubin was not a student of Brentano. His experiments that demonstrated the figure-ground phenomenon, however, were well known to the Berlin gestalt school. My analysis of Ehrenfels also sheds light on Rubin's theory, a theory that the Berlin gestalt school seemed to have overlooked, perhaps because Rubin's findings fit so well into their own notions.
Stumpf developed his theory of how presentations form a unity partly in rejection of Aristotle's notion of substance. His theory grounds his criticism of associationism. Stumpf's students, however, would not accept his dualistic view, but they would benefit from the experimental methods that he developed and taught them. Stumpf adapted his theory in response to his students' work, and that version formed the basis of his objections against their explanations.
Meinong's theory of how presentations are united was inspired by the Scholastics, and his students would render it into a psychological format. It is as a review of that latter work that the Berlin gestalt school presented its gestalt notion for the first time in mature form.
The conclusion very briefly reiterates Brentano's influence. It also contains some general observations regarding the diversity among the gestalt notions, the wide scope of the gestalt authors, and their zeal for the pursuit of pure scientific knowledge.

Abstract:
As technological advances have improved processor speed, main memory speed has lagged behind. Even with advanced RAM technologies, it has not been possible to close the gap in speeds. Ideally, a CPU can deliver good performance when the right data is made available to it at the right time. Caches and Registers solved the problem to an extent. This thesis takes the approach of trying to create a new memory access model that is more efficient and simple instead of using various add on mechanisms to mask high memory latency. The Line Associative Registers have the functionality of a cache, scalar registers and vector registers built into them. This new model qualitatively changes how the processor accesses memory.

Although most racers are good at controlling their cars, world champions are always talented at choosing the right racing line while others mostly fail to do that. Optimal racing line selection is a critical problem in car racing. However, currently it is strongly based on the intuition of experienced racers after they conduct repeated real-time experiments. It will be very useful to have a method which can generate the optimal racing line based on the given racing track and the car. This paper explains four methods to generate optimal racing lines: the Euler spiral method, artificial intelligence method, nonlinear programming solver method and integrated method. Firstly we study the problem and obtain the objective functions and constraints for both 2-D and 3-D situations. The mathematical and physical features of the racing tracks are studied. Then we try different ways of solving this complicated nonlinear programming problem. The Euler spiral method generates Euler spiral curve turns at corners and it gives optimal results fast and accurately for 2-D corners with no banking. The nonlinear programming solver method is based on the MINOS solver on AMPL and the MATLAB Optimization Toolbox and it only needs the input of the objective function and constraints. A heavy emphasis is placed on the artificial intelligence method. It works well for any 2-D or 3-D track shapes. It uses intelligent algorithms including branch-cutting and forward-looking to give optimal racing lines for both 2-D and 3-D tracks. And the integrated method combines methods and their advantages so that it is fast and practical for all situations. Different methods are compared, and their evolutions towards the optimum are described in detail. Convenient display software is developed to show the tracks and racing lines for observation. The approach to finding optimal racing lines for cars will be also helpful for finding optimal racing lines for bicycle racing, ice skating and skiing.

Abstract:
The demand for replacing internal combustion engines with electric ones is increasing in the vehicle industry. In the boating industry, an increasing number of manufacturers of electric drives establish themselves and bring new solutions to the field. Regarding boats which have previously been powered by fossile fuels, they now face the possibly of replacing their diesel inboard engine with an electric motor; granted that the new one is compatible with the boat’s internal configuration. The company GreenStar Marine develops and sells electric powertrains for boats which are aimed at replacing previous internal combustion engines.  The project’s purpose and aim are to develop a new collection of engine brackets and covers, on behalf of GreenStar Marine, which can be installed on mounts designed for diesel inboard engines. The purpose of the report is to clarify the processes and methods used during the project for achieving the goal.  The process started with collecting information and then analysing what the needs of the user are. The proven method for product development, QFD, was used in order to define a product specification. In the subsequent concept-phase, the work focused on two different aspects. The first being the technical challenge of the product’s adjustability and the second being to design the engine with a pleasing aesthetic.  Once the three product concepts were settled, the development continued which resulted in the final product consisting of ideas from several of the concepts. The final product ‘GreenStar E-line’ focuses on adjustability and can be installed on inboard mounts for diesel powered engines. The engine mounts can be horizontally adjusted in order to fit the width of the engine compartment. Furthermore, the product can be assembled in different sizes depending on which engine from the product line shall be fitted. The engine cover fully surrounds the engine, has an impression of high-quality, and offers protection from the marine environment.  Recommendations for future work include further examination of the components’ resilience and strength, the prevalence of vibrations in the hull, and finally the possibility of using polymers or composites in the core construction

Abstract:
As a mode of academic discourse, poetry offers pathways that lead to new and diverse ways of understanding. However, in my experiences as a learner and as an Instructional Associate at the Learning Centre at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU), I have found that poetry is not being utilized to its fullest capacity in the teaching of writing and in the exploration of language. The following thesis-performance hybrid is intended to illustrate the value of poetry as an approach to teaching writing and as an academic discourse, demonstrated largely through the medium of poetry itself. The technique of métissage has been selected to enhance the performative elements by intertwining life writing, various forms and types of poetry and significant citations from the literature. The life writing in the following text adopts conventions of autoethnography and biography, while the poetry reflects aspects of poetic inquiry. Through embracing a hybrid approach, which fuses various types of texts, the work explores the value in the greater use of poetry and the greater use of hybrid texts and forms of written assignments in the practice of teaching writing. This thesis-performance hybrid seeks to embody the very concepts being explored within it.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Over the last several decades, electricity consumption and generation have continually grown. Investment in the Transmission and Distribution (T&D) infrastructure has been minimal and it has become increasingly difficult and expensive to permit and build new power lines. At the same time, a growing increase in the penetration of renewable energy resources is causing an unprecedented level of dynamics on the grid. Consequently, the power grid is congested and under stress. To compound the situation, the utilities do not possess detailed information on the status and operating margins on their assets in order to use them optimally. The task of monitoring asset status and optimizing asset utilization for the electric power industry seems particularly challenging, given millions of assets and hundreds of thousands of miles of power lines distributed geographically over millions of square miles. The lack of situational awareness compromises system reliability, and raises the possibility of power outages and even cascading blackouts. To address this problem, a conceptual Power Line Sensor Network (PLSN) is proposed in this research. The main objective of this research is to develop a distributed PLSN to provide continuous on-line monitoring of the geographically dispersed power grid by using hundreds of thousands of low-cost, autonomous, smart, and communication-enabled Power Line Sensor (PLS) modules thus to improve the utilization and reliability of the existing power system. The proposed PLSN specifically targets the use of passive sensing techniques, focusing on monitoring the real-time dynamic capacity of a specific span of a power line under present weather conditions by using computational intelligence technologies. An ancillary function is to detect the presence of incipient failures along overhead power lines via monitoring and characterizing the electromagnetic fields around overhead conductors. This research integrates detailed modeling of the power lines and the physical manifestations of the parameters being sensed, with pattern recognition technologies. Key issues of this research also include design of a prototype PLS module with integrated sensing, power and communication functions, and validation of the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) technology integrated to this proposed PLSN.

Abstract:
As the demand for energy increases, as well as the demand for renewable energy, Vattenfall, as network owner, receives many requests to connect new wind power to the grid. The limiting factor for how much wind power that can be connected to the grid is in this case the maximum current capacity of the overhead lines that is based on a line temperature limit. The temperature limit is set to ensure a safety distance between the lines and the ground. This master thesis project is a part of a research project at Vattenfall Research and Development that is examining the possibilities of increasing the allowed current on overhead lines in order to be able to connect more wind power to the existing network. Measured data from two overhead lines in southern Sweden is analyzed and the internal relations between the measured parameters are examined. The measured parameters are overhead line sag, line temperature, ambient temperature, solar radiation, wind speed and line current. The results indicate that there is a big load margin that could be utilized to increase the maximum current as long as further work could show that low winds at line height correlates with low wind at nacelle height. The results show that the sag versus line temperature is approximately linear within the measured temperature range. This means that a real-time-monitoring system measuring the line temperature should give adequate knowledge of the line position to ensure the safety distance. A model for the line temperature as a function of insolation, current, ambient temperature and wind speed has been estimated for one of the lines. Simulations show that a sudden increase in current at a worst-case scenario would give the operators about ten minutes to react before the line reaches the temperature limit.

Abstract:
Power industries in transmission and distribution level are obligated to maintain and replace their electrical equipment. Maintaining the quality and continuity of supply is their priority to avoid customers' complaints and financial penalisation. Live-line working as one of the most important methods of maintenance has been used since the 1900s where the new methods in 1960s made the live-line workers enabled to work on the higher voltage levels up to 800kV. Various industries adopt different techniques to calculate the minimum approach distance (MAD) during the live-line work. A suitable method reduces the risk to live-line workers and provides adequate safety distances between the live parts and linesmen. Therefore, setting an appropriate safety distance between the linesmen and live parts ensures the safety of the workers and minimise the risk of flashover. In this thesis, different methods of calculation of the minimum approach distance are described, and results from overvoltage simulations are used as an input to the methodology outlined in IEC 61472. Also, this thesis highlights and investigates the impact of a range of factors within 400kV transmission line on the minimum approach distance (MAD). Factors examined include the time to crest of the overvoltage (wave shape), the fault type, the probability of occurrence of each type of fault, fault level and the type of overhead line and towers. Furthermore, the minimum approach distances and also associated risk due to each factor and scenario have been calculated. The calculated risk in this thesis presents the risk of failure of a gap against the switching overvoltages due to the simulation of sources of overvoltage. A new set of estimated equations is developed to consider the influence of wave shape in the calculation of the minimum approach distance (MAD). This thesis does not propose a method to replace the international standards, but it could be used in many situations including where utility companies wish to develop a complete understanding of the risk associated with live-line working. Calculation of the minimum approach distance (MAD) within the National Grid UK is based on the methodology described in the IEC 61472, whereas EDF Energy uses the IEEE method to calculate the minimum approach distance. The choice of a smaller / larger minimum approach distance (MAD) using different methods will have an impact on the risk associated with live-line working. Previous works intend to investigate the magnitude of switching overvoltages on one part of a network and calculate the appropriate minimum approach distance for the work in that section. This work is based on the examination of the switching overvoltages under the worst case scenarios. As a result, the simulated overvoltages in this work are higher than expected overvoltages in National Grid network. Also as in practice, the magnitude of switching overvoltages in National Grid network is controlled by different protections equipment therefore, the simulated results and the calculated minimum approach distances in this work are very conservative.

Tang, Dawei. "Investigation of line-scan dispersive interferometry for in-line surface metrology." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2016. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/29153/.

Abstract:
Advanced manufacturing techniques enable ultra-precision surfaces to be fabricated with various complicated and large-area structures. For instance, the cost-effectiveness of Roll-to-Roll (R2R) manufacturing technology has been widely demonstrated in industries making high volume as well as large-area foil products and flexible electronics. Evaluation of these fine surfaces by an expensive trial-and-error approach is unadvisable due to the high scrap rate. Therefore quality control using in-line metrology of the functional surface plays an important role in the success of employing R2R technology by enabling a high product yield whilst guaranteeing high performance and a long lifespan of these multi-layer products. This thesis presents an environmentally robust line-scan dispersive interferometry (LSDI) technique that is suitable for applications in in-line surface inspection. Obtaining a surface profile in a single shot allows this interferometer to minimise the effect of external perturbations and environmental noise. Additionally, it eliminates the mechanical scanning and has an extended axial measurement range without the 2π phase ambiguity problem by dispersing the output of the spectrometer onto the camera. Benefiting from high-speed camera, general-purpose graphics processing unit and multi-core processor computing technology, the LSDI can achieve high dynamic measurement with a high signal-to-noise ratio and is effective for use on the shop floor. Two proof-of-concept prototypes aimed at different applications are implemented. The cylindrical lens based prototype has a large lateral range up to 6 mm and can be used for characterisation of additively manufactured surface texture, surface form and surface blemish. The second prototype using a 4X microscope objective with a diffraction limited lateral resolution (~ 4 µm) is aiming at characterisation of surface roughness, micro-scale defects, and other imperfections of the ultra-precision surfaces. System design, implementation, fringe analysis algorithms and system calibrations are presented in detail in this thesis. Their performances are evaluated experimentally by measuring several standard step heights as well as Al2O3 coated polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) films. The measurement results acquired using both prototypes and a commercial available instrument (Talysurf CCI 3000) align with each other acceptably. This shows that the developed metrology sensors may potentially be applied to production lines such as R2R surface inspection where only defects present on the surface are concerned in terms of quality assurance. Implementation of these prototypes offers an attractive solution to improve manufacturing processing and reliability for the products in ultra-highprecision engineering.

The study on participation is a classic theme of Political Science. Digital technologies have enabled new forms of participation, promoting profound changes in the costs and time required for political engagement. Therefore, the investigation of the determinants of web participation has been gaining more and more relevance. In the field of electoral participation, however, Brazilian literature has been dedicated mainly to the examination of mechanisms for using Internet tools through on-line campaigns, especially to the degree of adhesion of candidates and parties to these technologies, as well as to the analysis of content published on digital social media platforms stemming from voter interaction with fanpages of politicians. In turn, this work is an unprecedented contribution, investigating through a household opinion survey the determinants of on-line and off-line electoral participation for the first time in Brazil, based on a sample of Salvador electorate. Their research is guided by three main objectives: 1) To examine the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), particularly digital platforms of social media (Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube and Twitter), in the process of civic engagement and political participation during the Brazilian presidential elections of 2014; 2) To measure the impact of sociodemographic variables (gender, age, education and family income), political attitudes (civic participation, political interest and party preference), Internet use (frequency of access and digital platforms) and media consumption (TV, journals, magazines, radio etc.) in the on-line and off-line political participation of the electorate, in addition to the impact of one form of participation on another; 3) To define the profile of the participants and nonparticipants, establishing comparisons between the patterns and levels of participation and prove, from empirical data and multivariate statistical analyzes, whether on-line participation attracts new actors or reinforces the participation of traditional activists. According to main results: 1) The Internet tools reinforced the participation of the most active voters in face-to-face campaign activities and mobilized inactive voters for on-line participation; 2) There is no indication that Internet tools can solve the classical dilemmas of representativeness of participation, such as underrepresentation of the poor in electoral campaigns; 3) There is also no evidence that web participation only reinforces on-site participation, as skeptics say; 4) The use of digital platforms of social media was determinant for the participation on-line and off-line; 5) The level of higher education was a predictor of web participation; 6) Political interest was a predictor of moderate/high on-line participation, but not low participation.

Badibanga, Kalombo Remy. "Life prediction of power line damper." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/9173.

Full text
Abstract:
Power line function is to transfer electrical power. Power lines represent a major component in the transport process of electricity and they are subjected to various types of failures. Causes of failure include wind-induced oscillations or Aeolian vibrations. Wind causes transmission line conductors to undergo oscillatory motions which cause failure. To mitigate oscillations of line conductors, Stockbridge dampers are used. It has been observed that dampers are subjected to the same undesirable and destructive effects from vibrations as the conductors they are meant to protect. In the case of a damper, the cyclic bending as well as the friction between its wire cables are caused by vibrations leading to failure. The mathematical model describing the bending stress of the symmetrical Stockbridge damper’s messenger cable near the clamped end is analyzed. The reliability of the mathematical model is assessed using experimental data obtained from the forced response test conducted at the VRTC laboratory at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban. Data from the experiment has been compared with the MatLab model established by the researcher. Due to friction between the wires of the messenger cable, variation of temperature is observed in the messenger cable during operation. Change of temperature of the messenger cable was investigated, as a function of time, at constant velocity and constant displacement. Experimental data were generated during dynamic characteristic tests on Stockbridge dampers and thereafter the prediction of the variation temperature was undertaken. There are various mechanical characteristics of a damper that can be affected with time. To reach the aim of this study, three types of vibration test were conducted on the Stockbridge damper: the fatigue test, the forced vibrations test and the free vibrations test. Tests were conducted on a shaker machine with new and used Stockbridge dampers to determine the remaining life of those dampers by looking at their different mechanical properties. The frequency domain and time spectrum were used to display the results. The fatigue test investigated one of the commonest types of Stockbridge damper failure, namely, loss of the small mass because of sustained high frequency resonance. Ultimately, data correlated well and two mathematical models were developed: one for predicting damage in the life of a Stockbridge damper (based on the highest resonance frequency of the damper), and one for predicting the temperature of the messenger cable.
