Abstract:
Most mineral and coal processing plants are forced to size their particulate streams in order to maximize the efficiency of their unit operations. Classifiers are generally considered to be more practical than screens for fine sizing, but the separation efficiency decreases dramatically for particles smaller than approximately 150 μm. In addition, classifiers commonly suffer from bypass, which occurs when a portion of the ultrafine particles (slimes) are misplaced by hydraulic carryover into the oversize product. The unwanted misplacement can have a large adverse impact on downstream sepa

This thesis is concerned with the solution of linear operator equations by projection methods known as minimal residual (MR) and orthogonal residual (OR) methods. We begin with a rather abstract framework of approximation by orthogonal and oblique projection in Hilbert space. When these approximation schemes are applied to sequences of nested spaces, with a simple requirement relating trial and test spaces in case of the OR method, one can derive at this rather general level the basic relations which have been proved for many specific Krylov subspace methods for solving linear systems of equat

However, they share the same objective to find a “discriminant vector” on to which the projection of training instances, called “discriminant scores”, can be used to discriminate different classes. In this research, we propose novel approaches to address issues of using the FKLD approach and improve its performance. First, in order to make the FKLD approach more meaningful in classification, we combine the FKLD with t

The L1-regularized form can be used for feature selection, but its non-differentiability causes more difficulties in training. Various optimization methods have been proposed in recent years, but no serious comparison among them has been made. In this paper, we carefully address implementation issues of some representative methods and conduct a comprehensive comparison. Abstract:
The main goal of our thesis is to understand qualitative properties of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the semi-linear wave model with time-dependent speed and dissipation. We greatly benefited from very precise estimates for the corresponding linear problem in order to obtain the global existence (in time) of small data solutions. This reason motivated us to introduce very carefully a complete description for classification of our models: scattering, non-effective, effective, over-damping. We have considered those separately.

1 Introduction In this doctoral thesis, we address several representative problems that arise in the context of learning from multiple heterogeneous agents. These problems are relevant to many modern applications such as crowdsourcing and internet advertising. In scenarios such as crowdsourcing, there is a planner who is interested in learning a task and a set of noisy agents provide the training data for this learning task. Any learning algorithm making use of the data provided by these noisy agents must account for their noise levels. The noise levels of the agents are unknown to the planne

Given the overall increase in the availability of computational resources, and the importance of forecasting the future, it should come as no surprise that prediction is considered to be one of the most compelling and challenging problems for both academia and industry in the world of data analytics. But how is prediction done, what factors make it easier or harder to do, how accurate can we expect the results to be, and can we harness the available computational resources in meaningful ways? The main computational task at each Newton iteration is to approximately solve a quadratic sub-problem by an iterative method such as the conjugate gradient (CG) method. It is known that CG has slow convergence if the sub-problem is ill-conditioned. Preconditioned CG (PCG) methods have been used to improve the convergence of the CG method, but it is difficult to find a preconditioner that performs well in most situations. Numerical modelling of subsurface processes, such as geotechnical, geohydrological or geothermal applications requires a realistic description of fluid parameters in order to obtain plausible results. Particularly for gases, the properties of a fluid strongly depend on the primary variables of the simulated systems, which lead to non-linerarities in the governing equations. This thesis describes the development, evaluation and application of a numerical model for non-isothermal flow processes based on thermodynamic principles. Here a,b,g are given functions on (-1,1) and the unknown function f on (-1,1) is looked for. It is assumed that a and b are real-valued and Hölder continuous functions on [-1,1] without common zeros and that g belongs to some weighted space of Hölder continuous functions. In particular, g may have a finite number of singularities. Based on known spectral properties of

NP-hard problems of higher-dimensional orthogonal packing are considered. We look closer at their logical structure and show that they can be decomposed into problems of a smaller dimension with a special contiguous structure. This decomposition influences the modeling of the packing process, which results in three new solution approaches. Keeping this decomposition in mind, we model the smaller-dimensional problems in a single position-indexed formulation with non-overlapping inequalities serving as binding constraints. Thus, we come up with a new integer linear programming model, which we s
