Abstract:
The improved supercell plane wave expansion method is applied to theoretically study the propagation of flexural waves in a ternary locally resonant phononic crystal thin plate with a point defect and linear defects. The thin concrete plate composed of a square array of steel cylinders hemmed around by rubber is considered here. Absolute band gaps in low frequency are obtained. For the point defect, the defect mode is localized around the defect, and the magnitude of the resonant defect mode is strongly dependent on the defect filling fraction, mass density and Young’s modulus of the defect cy

Linear defect is a common defect of galvanized sheet. Formation mechanism of linear defect was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy disperses spectroscopy (EDS). The results indicate that Al2O3 particles which have a size less than 7μm are enriched in the shallow surface of the substrate. Al2O3 particles are exposed during rolling, resulting in scratches and rough spots on cold-rolled sheet. The places where Al2O3 inclusions enrich are easy to form surface micro-cracks. Mechanical properties of crystalline materials are almost always dominated by the defects within them. The ability to shape metals into pipes, girders and furniture stems from the generation, motion and interaction of these defects. Defects are also the agents of chemical changes within crystals, enabling mass transport by atomic diffusion and changes of phase. Defects distort the crystal and these distortions enable defects to interact over large distances. The theory of elasticity is used to describe these interactions. Abstract:
Aging gas and oil transmission pipeline infrastructure has led to the need for improved integrity assessment. Presently, external and internal corrosion defects are the leading cause of pipeline failure in Canada, and in many other countries around the world. The currently accepted defect assessment procedures have been shown to be conservative, with the degree of conservatism varying with the defect dimensions. To address this issue, a multi-level corrosion defect assessment procedure has been proposed. The assessment levels are organized in terms of increasing complexity; with three-dimensio

Understanding the hardening syndrome of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) tuber tissue to eliminate textural defects in fresh and fresh-peeled/cut products. United States Department of Agriculture, 2002. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2002.7587238.bard.

Abstract:
The project sought to understand factors and mechanisms involved in the hardening of potato tubers. This syndrome inhibits heat softening due to intercellular adhesion (ICA) strengthening, compromising the marketing of industrially processed potatoes, particularly fresh peeled-cut or frozen tubers. However, ICA strengthening occurs under conditions which are inconsistent with the current ideas that relate it to Ca-pectate following pectin methyl esterase (PME) activity or to formation of rhamnogalacturonan (RG)-II-borate. First, it was necessary to induce strengthening of the middle lamellar c

Abstract:
Concepts for real-time grading of fruits and vegetables were developed, including multi-spectral imaging with structured illumination to detect and distinguish surface defects from concavities. Based on these concepts, a single-lane conveyor and inspection system were designed and evaluated. Image processing algorithms were developed to inspect and grade large quasi-spherical fruits (peaches and apples) and smaller dried fruits (dates). Adjusting defect pixel thresholds to achieve a 25% error rate on good apples, classification errors for bruise, crack, and cut classes were 51%, 42%, and 46%,

Abstract:
Objective: The objective of this research was to investigate the potential use of NMR for evaluating various internal quality factors of fruits and vegetables, leading to the eventual development of practical techniques that are useful for future development of NMR sensors. Summary: Investigation on NMR imaging, one-dimension NMR projection, and single-pulse free-induction-decay (FID) spectrum led to the development of high-speed NMR techniques for real-time sensing of internal quality of selected fruits. NMR imaging can be used for detecting internal defects and various quality factors such a

Condition being studied: Myocardial bridge : A myocardial bridge (MB) is a congenital heart defect in which a bridge of muscle fibers (myocardium) overlying a section of a coronary artery and the artery is squeezed and normal blood flow is disrupted. Most bridges don't seem to cause symptoms. However, some people can experience angina, or chest pain. In pati

The objectives of this project were to develop procedures and models, based on neural networks, for quality sorting of agricultural produce. Two research teams, one in Purdue University and the other in Israel, coordinated their research efforts on different aspects of each objective utilizing both melons and tomatoes as case studies. At Purdue: An expert system was developed to measure variances in human grading. Data were acquired from eight sensors: vision, two firmness sensors (destructive and nondestructive), chlorophyll from fluorescence, color sensor, electronic sniffer for odor detecti

Repair of DNA breaks is an essential function in plant cells as well as a crucial step in addition of modified DNA to plant cells. In addition, our inability to introduce modified DNA to its appropriate locus in the plant genome remains an important hurdle in genetically engineering crop species. We have taken a combined forward and reverse genetics approach to examining DNA double strand break repair in plants, focusing primarily on nonhomologous DNA end-joining. Introduction Previous research had suggested that benzoxazinoids, a class of defensive metabolites found in maize, wheat, rye, and wild barley, are not only direct insect deterrents, but also influence other areas of plant metabolism. In particular, the benzoxazinoid 2,4-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-2H-1,4-benzoxa- zin-3(4H)- one (DIMBOA) was implicated in: (i) altering plant growth by interfering with auxin signaling, and (ii) leading to the induction of gene expression changes and secondary plant defense responses. The overall goal of this proposal was to identify mechanisms by which benzoxazinoids i
