The issues of conducting field surveys of operated buildings and structures in order to prepare a conclusion on the technical condition of load-bearing and enclosing structures are considered.

Abstract:
When Courant prepared the text of his 1942 address to the American Mathematical Society for publication, he added a two-page Appendix to illustrate how the variational methods first described by Lord Rayleigh could be put to wider use in potential theory. Choosing piecewise-linear approximants on a set of triangles which he called elements, he dashed off a couple of two-dimensional examples and the finite element method was born. … Finite element activity in electrical engineering began in earnest about 1968-1969. A paper on waveguide analysis was published in Alta Frequenza in early 1969, giv

Abstract:
The fundamentals of kinematics and dynamics of transport piston internal combustion engines made using different layout schemes are presented. Along with the traditional in-line, V-shaped, including oppositional, arrangement of cylinders, schemes with "staggered" arrangement of cylinders in the block at the displaced connecting rod necks of the crankshaft of the engine are considered. The kinematics of the coaxial crank mechanism is considered in detail. The questions of dynamics with reduction of calculated dependences of forces, moments, a choice of a rational order of work of cylinders in r

The processing of a linguistic expression, when viewed as a complex of (Specifier)-Head-Complement(s) phrases (SHCs), whilst suggestive of a recursive solution—that is, a sentence is a matrix SHC (subject-verb-object) composed of internal SHCs and the completion of the overall task is divisible into smaller but equivalent subtasks—in fact proceeds iteratively. This is here shown by manipulating the memory load of processing SHCs and measuring the reaction times of participants to extraneous tones placed at specific places within a sentence. The results show that there is a decreasing tendency

Trimethylaminuria (TMAU) or “Fish Odor Syndrome” is a disorder caused by increased concentrations of the volatile amine trimethylamine (TMA) in body fluids resulting in an unpleasant odor. The excess TMA may occur either due to deficient hepatic oxidation (primary) or increased bacterial generation (secondary). Testing urine for TMA concentration is the first line of investigation, preferably following a dietary load of a TMA precursor such as choline. Measurement of TMA and TMA-oxide are used as a guide to determine a primary or secondary cause, which can be confirmed by DNA analysis. FMO3 de

This chapter focuses on the song “Rock Island Lime”, which was performed by Robert Kelly Pace, a twenty-one-year-old convict, along with a group of inmates at Cummins Camp One, a unit of the Arkansas penal system. Their performance involved a closely patterned call-and-response, their voices dispersed in three- and sometimes four-part harmony. Between the choruses one of them imitated a train whistle. “Rock Island Line” began its journey in Little Rock, Arkansas, at the repair shops of the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railroad. This chapter studies the infrastructure and construction sector, which is the second-most exposed to corruption, just after extractive industries. The reasons are rather obvious: typically, underdeveloped areas are most in need of motorways, bridges, railway lines, ports, and airports. Most always these projects are about big money. Competition is fierce amongst bidders and frequently government agencies in insufficiently governed states decide who gets the job. Even where multinational development banks (MDBs) are involved as loan providers, they may find it difficult to prevent extortion and

Disaffected Parties reveals how alienation from politics effected crucial changes to the shape and status of literary form. Recovering the earliest expressions of grumbling, irritability, and cynicism towards politics, this study asks how unsettled partisan legacies converged with more recent discontents to forge a seminal period in the making of English literature—and thereby poses wide-ranging questions about the lines between politics and aesthetics. This study of the evolving uniforms and personal equipment used by US ground forces in the Korean War features new full-color artwork and previously unpublished photographs. In June 1950, US soldiers and Marines deployed in the Korean War were dressed and equipped largely as they had been in the closing stages of World War II, but by 1953 major innovations had transformed their appearance. Featuring eight pages of specially commissioned artwork alongside carefully chosen photographs, some never previously published, this study charts the evolution of the US troops’ uniforms and gear through th
