Abstract:
Effective linen management is important in maintaining hygiene and comfort for patients in institutions as important as the Benguet General Hospital. This study addresses a critical research gap in hospital linen management, offering valuable insights into the challenges and best practices specific to Benguet General Hospital. By focusing on both operational efficiency and sustainability, the study contributes to the broader body of knowledge on healthcare linen management and provides practical recommendations. Through interviews with key stakeholders, this qualitative study explores the practices and challenges associated with effective Linen management at BeGH. The findings suggest that strict sorting, frequent inventory, and hygiene procedures were the critical practices at BeGH toward ensuring the availability of clean linens and reducing infection risks. Nevertheless, considering the efforts made, challenges associated with the shortage of linens during patient transfers and the inability to trace misplaced linens persist and point out the need for improved operational strategies.

Abstract:
Bed linen is the material laid above the mattress of a bed that serves various purposes – hygiene, warmth, protection of the mattress – and also has a decorative effect in the room. According to several studies, the type of bed linen used for our sleep has a direct effect on our health; in other words, sleep quality is the ultimate performance indicator of bed linen cloth. In this research work, a relationship between bed linen properties and sleep quality was established. Bed linens serve as a basic requirement for sleep, and assessing the right kind of sheet is an important aspect to look into. Analyzing the basic properties of bed linen is an important exercise to perform in order to provide the user with the best-quality sleep. This research focuses on deriving an equation that can be applied to calculate the objective measurement of sleep quality with respect to bed linen properties by developing a bed linen sleep quality index. Questionnaires were designed and subjective evaluation method was followed. A panel of experts was considered for a subjective rating of bed linen properties, their weightage, ranking and bed linen fabrics assessment. Coefficient of concordance was calculated to determine the agreement among the judges and a discriminant analysis was also carried out to determine the variation of the individual rating for a particular property. The results showed a high correlation between the subjective index and the objective index for the bed linen fabric samples. Thus, the objective sleep quality index could be estimated well.

Dolan, Alice Claire. "The fabric of life : linen and life cycle in England, 1678-1810." Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/17196.

Full text
Abstract:
'The Fabric of Life: Linen and Life Cycle in England, 1678-1810' is structured around the human life cycle to draw out the social and cultural importance of linen for all ranks of society. Human and object life cycles are juxtaposed in the thesis to analyse co-dependent activities and processes rather than focusing on one facet of daily life. For thousands of years flax was a staple fibre, used for textile production in many parts of the globe. Cotton only overtook linen as the most popular textile in England at home and on the body during the nineteenth century. This thesis examines the preceding century to reveal why linen remained a daily necessity in England between 1678 and 1810, a period which encompassed a series of significant changes in the production, trade and use of linen. Linen was ubiquitous as underwear, sheets, table linens and for logistical purposes therefore it provides a unique insight into the early-modern world; a means of understanding the multifaceted experiences of daily life, of integrating understandings of the body, domestic, social, cultural and commercial activities. This thesis is social history through the lens of linen, reading a society through its interactions with a textile.

Wolf, Zanine Nadia. "'Airing dirty linen': the problems of establishing a women's rights organisation in contemporary Swaziland." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/11692.

Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 80-84.
This dissertation is about the power of tradition to influence domestic behavioural norms in Swaziland. I set out to demonstrate that, although the Swaziland Action Group Against Abuse (SWAGAA) has rendered itself indispensable to Swazi women, it still has a long way to go before realising its goal of the empowerment of abused women. This is due, primarily, to the organisation's adherence to international standards of women's human rights which cannot readily be applied in the particular context of Swaziland because they are resisted by those who seek to preserve what is claimed to be the traditional order. SWAGAA's counselling service is based on the premise that if an abused woman can be encouraged to make an informed, independent decision then she will have been empowered to take control of her life, and, ultimately, to free herself of the abuse. I argue that this approach, despite good intentions, is highly unrealistic in the locality of Swaziland. When a woman attempts to confront gender andlor domestic violence using the empowerment approach advocated by SWAGAA, she comes up against a number of entrenched ideological and practical constraints that undermine her power to negotiate. Foremost amongst these is the strong negative responses to any practice of 'airing dirty linen in public', such as consulting SWAGAA, for which a woman may be severely chastised. Women are reprimanded for seeking counsel beyond what are regarded as family boundaries because, they are told, by the police and by those around them, that this is inconsistent with acceptable and normative 'traditional' practice. I argue that the pressure placed upon women to adhere to practices of social organisation which are upheld as traditional, is rooted in a legacy of mistrust of foreign ideologies and practices. The leadership of the country has been, and continues to be engaged in an ongoing struggle to retain some semblance of what it regards as the traditional order. SWAGAA comes up directly against this legacy. Firstly, the women whom they counsel are constrained from making the individualistic decisions that SWAGAA wishes them to make. Secondly, women themselves are so embroiled in a social situation where men act as their advocates that they do not easily relate to the idea of individual empowerment. Yet SWAGAA persists with an approach that tries to undermine everyday normative practices, rather than working within the parameters of those norms. Its radical approach renders SWAGAA's counselling service too ambitious in Swaziland. What I thus advocate is an incremental approach that aims, gradually, to encourage women to empower themselves, given the persistence of the ideological and practical resistance to those attempts.

Abstract:
The counterfeit phenomenon was analyzed in this magisterial work, and was interpretation made of it. In any museum appears to discover some forgeries that can be clarified only with time though time can veil it. Forgeries are made usually by faired people who lengthened manner or style of one or another famous artist. On one glance to history is clear, that the phenomenon of adulteration is popular in these quarters, where finances and profit are in hand also in the world of art. This phenomenon does not passes neither history nor politics. Some myths and legends are so vital, that it can encourage the modern man to a fantasies, that embolden to falsification of a facts. The rigging is not only material wealth, but intellectual property can be rigged too. Though the religious society declaring Christian moralities speak against any inferiority or lying and cheating, there are facts of its members can not resist a temptation to firm up their positions in peoples harts by invoking worldly unfair games. Abstract:
Generally, the most common damaging factors for linen textile materials are the environmental conditions, their handling, and natural decay. Such environmental factors are ultraviolet (UV) radiation, humidity, and high temperature. Therefore, to investigate the effects these factors may cause, an accelerated weathering test was conducted on linen fabrics, using alternating cycles of UV exposure and humidity, along with relatively high temperatures. The effects of this test were investigated using non-destructive and micro-destructive analysis techniques. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was used to observe any modifications appearing at the surface of the fibers. Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (EDS) was employed in conjunction with SEM for obtaining the spectrum of the chemical elements that were present at the surface of the linen samples. The modifications of functional groups occurring due to the weathering of linen were assessed by Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). The color change of the samples was measured with a spectrophotometer. All the acquired information can be used as a starting point for the development of customized environmental parameters for keeping patrimony linen fabrics in museums in optimum conditions, thus preventing further damage. Additionally, the artificially weathered fabrics will be further employed in conservation experiments as substitute for old linen fabrics.

Abstract:
Surface water treatment plants in Trinidad are incapable of filtering highly turbid water. Water treatment operations are shut down whenever turbidity levels rise during or after rainfall. The aim of this research is to determine the physical properties of linen, burlap, crepe-backed satin and cotton fabrics and to compare their efficiencies as filter media for reducing turbidity in water. Scanning electron microscopy was used to generate images of each fabric. Fabric weave type was determined. Inter-yarn pore sizes, inter-fiber pore sizes, warp and weft spacings, warp and weft diameters and thicknesses were measured using ImageJ. Based on the properties examined, and execution of cross-flow filtration and perpendicular filtration tests, linen was the chosen fabric filter medium. Surface profilometry resulted in linen having the roughest surface of 685.5µm and the largest maximum profile height of 3632.4µm. Linen’s inter-yarn and inter-fiber pore sizes were 41.98µm and 22.37µm respectively. This fabric had warp and weft spacings of 400µm and 700µm respectively and was 400.39µm thick. Measurements also revealed warp and weft diameters of 13.26µm and 14.96µm respectively. Linen had a high tensile strength of 402N. Linen, had a hopsack plain weave and was tightly woven; it was 95.16% porous with a sediment retention capacity of 71%. Linen is a fabric material that could prove to be a very good filter medium. Also, Acono River water turbidity levels measured ranged from 2.47NTU to 23.93NTU. Soil types contained in the turbid water were gravels, sand and silt varying from 25mm to 0.075mm in size.

Abstract:
There are many bed linen manufacturers in Taiwan. They want to success in the domestic bed linen collection market. However, the fabric designer always has the ideas with color and pattern by self-experience. For the fabric designer and manufacturer, they need a reference frame to communication. For this reason, we attempt to apply the statistical techniques for them to get more design understandings in the market of bed linen collections. We use the cluster analysis in a potential consumer survey to evaluate whether is the consumer’s lovely color and pattern with emotional preference. For the main bed linen buyers are the female in Taiwan market. The research focuses on 20-40 years old female interviewees. It collects more than 600 respondents’ data from three major cities in the northern, central and southern regions of Taiwan. The cities are Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung. The interviewees choose the top 1 to 3 that they like the most and willing to buy from provided 16 photos of bed linen collection in different styles. Then, the result of the statistical cluster analysis shows that 16 collections can be grouped as 7 clusters with different favors. From the emotional preferences of color and pattern, we find out which collections are more suitable for different regions, and which ones are less popular among consumers. This can provide effectively the fabric designer with the direction of domestic consumer demand. And, also let manufacturer predetermine what combinations are suitable for some regional sales. In the past, fabric designers often used self-experience to design product. Now, we can try to conduct such surveys first, and then use more objective statistical results to help designers understand the bed linen design needs of consumers in different regions. At the same time, manufacturers can also better understand what types of products are suitable for sale in which region, also reduce inventory and slow-selling problems. Final, we hope to verify this statistical evaluation technique based on more manufacturers' sales data in the future, and whether it can improve their profits in practice.

Impact of Glass Fiber Content and Packing Pressure on Weld Line Integrity in Injection Molded Short Glass Fibre Reinforced Polyamide. Universidad de los Andes, December 2024. https://doi.org/10.51573/andes.pps39.gs.im.2.

Full text
Abstract:
Managing the challenge of weld lines of short-fiber reinforced polymers (SFRPs) in injection molding is crucial for enhancing the mechanical performance of these composites. This study evaluates the impact of various glass fiber contents (0 to 50 wt%) within a polyamide 6 (PA6) matrix on the tensile and flexural properties at weld lines, comparing each sample to its counterpart without a weld line. Our findings indicate that weld lines have minimal impact on the mechanical properties of composites with low fiber content (10 wt%). However, at higher fiber contents, the strength, modulus, and strain at fracture are significantly reduced due to unfavorable fiber orientations at the weld lines. Increasing the packing pressure during injection molding can partially recover these properties by promoting favorable fiber orientation at the weld line. This signifies the importance of carefully controlling processing parameters to optimize the mechanical performance of SFRPs at weld lines.

Abstract:
The tables in this document present an inventory of some of the available poverty lines for all IDB member countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. The listed poverty lines are expressed as per capita monthly amounts of nominal local currency and are estimated based on the reference (fieldwork) period of the survey to which they apply. For example, Mexico's INEGI poverty line for 1994 is given in pesos for the 4th quarter of 1994. The only exceptions are the IDB/Poverty Targeted Investments (PTI) poverty lines, which are estimated by using the yearly average of the general consumption price index so that their reference period is mid-year. The appendix presents a more detailed explanation of how the IDB/PTI poverty lines are estimated. In order to review the origin of the rest of the lines, the reader is referred to their original sources, which are listed after each table. All sources are included as footnotes to the tables.
