Full textOur dissertation discusses the literary representation of female characters involved in the oath scenes of classic literature. In the first section of this work oath is analyzed from a linguistic, historical, juridical and anthropological point of view, providing references to many historical and literary sources. The second section consists of a selection of greek and latin texts of the archaic, classic and hellenistic period: our comment focuses on the oath formula, gestures and on the role of female characters, underlining the complex relation created by the interaction of female representation and oath as a speech act and an authoritative utterance. Each text is both exemplary for a specific phenomenology and it is indicative of peculiar literary themes, which are discussed. This tension between gender performance and performative language sometimes reveals a criticism concerned with social conventions and traditional values. Furthermore, it is also possible to identify some topic elements in different literary genres and to define some fixed and recurrent schemes.

Full textThe dissertation offers an analysis of the relationship between Catullus' long poems and Apollonius Rhodius' Argonautica. The analysis, which is mainly concerned whith poem 64, is based on a methodical collation. The study is divided into ten chapters, an introduction, and a conclusion. In the introduction the adopted methodology is explained, and some theoretical questions regarding intertextuality are discussed. Chapter One deals with an outline of modern scholarship pertinent to the last hundred and fifty years. This outline points out that Apollonius tends to be more and more important in the scholarship on poem 64. From Chapter Two to Chapter Nine poem 64 is examined in detail. Special stress is laid on the similarities between Catullus and Apollonius pertaining to content, structure, and style. Chapter Ten concerns poems 61-63 and 65-68. As these seven poems are generally quite different from the Argonautica, only the similarities which are significant are examined. The last section draws the conclusions. On the whole, the study shows that the similarities between Catullus and Apollonius are rather unimportant, since they usually aren't deep or concern topoi. Although for historical reasons it seems probable that Apollonius influenced Catullus, there is in fact no evidence that Catullus' poems were directly influenced by Apollonius' Argonautica. Therefore, it is suggested that interpretations of Catullus 64 based on Apollonius' Argonautica should be avoided. This view stands in contrast to the views of those contemporary scholars who establish an intertextual relationship between poem 64 and the Argonautica.

Full textThe work is the Italian translation of Erasmus’ Adagium 2001, Herculei labores, with comment of lines 1-116, which include the story of the labor of Hercules against the Hydra of Lerna and interpretations that Erasmus provides in order to introduce philology as a Herculean task in autobiographical perspective. The introduction aims to present the most relevant elements of the comment and some observations about the humanist’s self representation. Erasmus makes his identification with Hercules a topos in his ironical self description, but at the same time he describes himself as a new Jerome, whose letters he is editing. Eventually it also considers the portrait of Erasmus painted by Holbein the Younger and kept at Longford Castle in the light of the text of the adagium, which is referred to with the word in the foreground, ΗΡΑΚΛΕΙΟΙ ΠΟΝΟΙ.

Full textThis study aims at compiling a lexicon of love terms of Horace’s poetry, namely of the words used in the first three books of the Odes. The great interest for the Venosa-born poet let us focus not only on the main themes of his poetics (e.g. modus, angulus, mors, tempus, cura, to name but a few) but also on some less well-known topics such as love. Every Odes book was carefully analyzed and the main love-related terms were ranked according to the number of occurrences. The research work done by Nisbet-Hubbard was used to support the commentary on the first and second book (see R.G.M. Nisbet-M. Hubbard, A commentary on Horace: Odes Book 1, Oxford 1970; R.G.M. Nisbet-M. Hubbard, A commentary on Horace: Odes Book 2, Oxford 1978). The commentary on the third book was made by making reference to the work done by Nisbet-Rudd (see R.G.M. Nisbet-Rudd, A commentary on Horace: Odes Book 3, Oxford, 2003 ). Being the main focus of this study the drawing up of a lexicon, the contribution made by the Index uerborum amatorium (see R. Pichon, De sermone amatorio apud Latinos elegiarum scriptores, Paris 1902 ) and by the ThLL was also very important. Finally the most meaningful terms for love poetry in general were identified. These words are also present in Horace’s poetry. In particular it was possible to detect a special connection between Horace, the neoteric and elegiac tradition and the lexicon of colours. The latter has multiple occurrences in love poetry, especially in relation to male and female beauty. As a consequence it becomes a key element to better understand the aesthetics of Horace’s poetry in depicting the lovers populating his most famous love verses.

Full textThe dissertation is a semasiological investigation of Augustine’s vocabulary concerning Divine Providence. It comprises both the key-words prouidentia, prouideo, prouidens, prouidus, prouisio, prouisor, prouisus and the lexemes in a direct logic-syntactic relationship to the key-words. On the one hand, the synchronic analysis considers all the key-words’ attestations within Augustine’s corpus, on the other hand, analogies and differences between Augustine and previous authors are successively evaluated from a diachronic perspective, in order to widen the spectrum of Augustine’s possible Latin models (pagans, biblical, patristic). I have created a database to record the lexical data, selecting them according to the criteria of frequency and significance, organizing them by topics, corresponding in part to the dissertation’s chapters. The first section deals with lexemes that designate the idea of the governance of Providence (the families of administro, guberno, rego and some lexemes which express the action of Providence); moreover, lexemes and iuncturae signifying Providence as a mysterious presence are investigated. The last two chapters deal with the topic of benevolence and with the so-called “divine pedagogy”: through exterior signs, Providence “calls back” the human being to his interiority. A final appendix deals with Augustine’s use of Sap 6,16 and Sap 8,1. Augustine’s contribution to Latin philosophical vocabulary takes place on the semantic level rather than the lexical. Besides suffixation, composition, and calque, metaphors play a fundamental role in the composition of Augustine’s vocabulary. Metaphors are often derived from other technical languages, or they are based on traditional images of the pagan religion. Augustine is indebted to Cicero and also to Seneca for the biographical-existential meaning of some lexemes, though Augustine transfers them from the human level to the divine level. This becomes clear, e.g., with reference to the concept of admonitio, an integral part of Seneca’s philosophical program, but the Providence’s “recall” for Augustine.

Valenzano, Chiara <1988>. "Scaenica ostentatio: percorsi di teatralità tragica nelle Declamationes minores dello Pseudo-Quintiliano." Doctoral thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2018. http://amsdottorato.unibo.it/8548/1/valenzano_tesi%20dottorato.pdf.
Full textThe present paper is connected to the most recent studies about ancient declamation and it focuses on Pseudo-Quintilian’s Declamationes minores. This work is a collection of exercises written about the typical motives of rhetorical schools. It is important because it clarifies the way the Roman school operated in the first century of the Empire. In fact, this dissertation is part of a research project which aims to provide the first Italian translation and a new commentary in order to revise Winterbottom’s (1984). In the last thirty years there has been a considerable development of declamation studies, therefore it seemed necessary to work on a new textual commentary and revision that takes into account recent material which integrates, enlarges and deepens the interpretative framework. Another aim of this work is finding the literary references that can be found in the Minores with specific attention to those originated from comedy and, above all, tragedy. We made a selection of the controversiae on a thematic basis in order to investigate the relationship between rhetoric and drama. Consequently, this paper has been divided into two parts: the first deals with three themes that, due to their importance, seemed particularly suitable for the exemplification of the close relationship that links the Minores to dramatic literature, i.e. the stock character of the stepmother, the theme of the burial of the dead and the theme of madness. In the second part there is the translation and commentary of the texts of 21 Minores, chosen on the basis of their links with drama.
Mattioni, Eugenio <1991>. "Genus seditiosorum. L'oratoria dei populares nelle testimonianze e nei frammenti (133-44 a.C.)." Doctoral thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2020. http://amsdottorato.unibo.it/9293/1/INVIO%20TESTO%20DEFINITIVO%20CORRETTO%20AGGIORNATO.pdf.
Full textThe work tests the hypothesis of the existence, during the late Roman republic (133-44 BC), of an oratorical style recognizable as proper to populares. In order to identify their distinctive technical characteristics, after reviewing the critical edition of reference (Malcovati 19764), we proceed to the translation and commentary of the oratorical testimonies and fragments relating to the 25 main exponents of the pars popularis (from P. Licinius Crassus Dives Mucianus to C. Scribonius Curio the Younger). In the introduction, the following points are discussed, in the light of a detailed presentation of each status quaestionis and a rereading of the sources: existence of populares; identification of popularis speakers; selection, transmission and characteristics of the tradition of oratorical material; its state and best editing methods; eloquentia popularis in Cicero (also used by optimates); oratorical style of Gaius Gracchus, Julius Caesar and the Graccan, Marian and Caesarian orators; reformulation of the critical category (eloquentia popularium), historical and stylistic conclusions. The results are integrated in the discussion, in order to formulate an independent judgment on each question. The data are also proposed in overall tables in three appendices, which present: the political-legislative activity of C. Gracchus, Saturninus, Clodius and Caesar in comparison (1), the figures and rhetorical aspects found in the fragments (2.1), the judgments on the style and rhetorical qualities found in the testimonies (2.2). The comment explains the main philological, historical and historiographical questions relating to each passage, while the focus is placed on its linguistic and rhetorical aspects. The indications on the performative context are highlighted, then moving on to the detailed analysis (so far a critics' desire) of the arguments and the formal style and, finally, studying how these data fit into the overall picture of the eloquence of this group of speakers.

Doctoral thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2021. http://amsdottorato.unibo.it/9949/1/TESI%20DOTTORALE%20Aureliana%20Mazzarella%20%20Settembre%202021.pdf.
Full textThis doctoral thesis “Ad summum bonum iter. Textual revision and commentary by Seneca, Epistulae morales ad Lucilium XLVIII, CXI” (supervisor Prof. F. Citti), aims to provide a scientific commentary on the Latin text of some Epistulae morales ad Lucilium (48 and 111), accompanied by translation, exegetical notes of a lexical, stylistic-rhetorical and historical- literary nature and discussion of the main textual problems (reference text the critical edition of Reynolds, Oxonii 1965). The purpose of the research is to deepen and complete the study of letters 48 and 111 of the correspondence, only episodically and unsystematically examined, focusing on the salient philosophical aspects and more significant conductors, such as the Senecan critique of nimia subtilitas (a theme present above all in the so-called dialectical epistles, connected to the different forms of syllogisms and the methods of contesting them), with particular reference to the ambiguities deriving from the use of terms in the proper sense and metalinguistic, reflexive and not reflexive; moreover he uses satirical humour and a colloquial language near to the comedy and to the satire, to ridicule Stoic syllogism; the theme of friendship; the use of poetic quotations and / or allusions (Virgilian and not Virgilian), decontextualized and re-semantized in an educational and psychagogical function, also bent by the philosopher to express his ethical message more visually; the use of the specialized lexicon coming from different semantic fields (legal, economic, military, medical), applied by Seneca to philosophical parenesis and, above all, the relationship between Latin philosophical lexicon and Greek models. Finally, in addition to deepening the motif of egestas temporis and some diatribic references contained in the epistles, some topoi have been identified and studied.

Full textThis thesis consists of a scholarly commentary on Lucretius’ Book VI, lines 703-1089, where the poet explores several mirabilia of the natural world (i.e., the summer flooding of the Nile, Avernian places, fluctuations in the temperature of well water, marvellous springs and magnetism). The introduction provides a concise overview of Book VI in order to elucidate the place of the passage chosen for the commentary in relation to the larger whole, and then it focuses on the significance of wonder and the marvellous in the poem, also through the comparison with the paradoxographic tradition. The text comes with a brief critical apparatus and an Italian translation. The commentary, which aims to enhance the poem’s literary, philosophical and scientific aspects, handles the most relevant textual and exegetical problems, as well as grammatical, linguistic, stylistic and metrical issues. The study concludes with two appendices.
