Full textThis research aims at giving some methodological guidance for the study of proverbs through corpora. In the first chapter, the analysis of the linguistics of proverbs highlights their main characteristics. Firstly, they are sentences – not phrases; secondly, their semantics concerns three different levels, since they have a compositional meaning, a paremiological meaning and, when uttered, they convey a message. In chapter two, after highlighting the relationship between corpus linguistics and pariemology, I have searched for a methodology to automatically find proverbs in very big corpora, such as itWaC and frWaC, the two corpora used in this research. Drawing on studies from other fields, such as phraseology, I have realised that proverbs can be found through the concordance of their marker. In this research, these markers of proverbs are the words proverbio, for Italian proverbs, and proverbe, for French proverbs. Chapters three and four practically illustrate how our research has been carried out. The analysis has focused on identifying the main features characterizing our proverbs and their functioning in real contexts. In particular, great importance has been attached to variation and creativity in proverbs, proving that we are still modifying and inventing proverbs. This study clearly shows that proverbs are still in use, on the one hand, and that research on proverbs needs further and more thorough investigation, on the other. However, in order to obtain even more satisfying results, proverbs must be investigated using real data.

Full textThis work presents a comparative study of the main features of Smart City terminology in French, Italian and English, and it aims at deepening the knowledge of the disciplinary field analysed. A broad descriptive model is adopted, based on several methodological approaches. The study is divided into three parts, preceded by a preface with the diachronic analysis of the French term urbanisme. The first section aims at outlining and defining the Smart City concept, with particular emphasis on the causes of the emergence of this urban model at the beginning of the 21st century, its main stakeholders, and the semantic-rhetoric content of the adjective smart, which is far from being a neutral or fashionable label. Then, terminological neology and normalization in the Romance languages are investigated: the theoretical framework is followed by the study of the neological potential of French and Italian compared to the new English terms appearing in the Smart City domain. Finally, the third part focuses on realizing a terminological resource – a multilingual glossary, in annex – which is designed as a contribution to the definition and dissemination of the Smart City concept. The conclusion includes the main research outcomes and further perspectives of study.

Full textOur thesis aims at exploring the intercultural dimension in Italian-French bilingual dictionaries. The first part represents a theoretical approach to the issue. A definition of the concepts of culture and cross-cultural precedes a study of the relationships between languages and cultures. After that, the following themes are dealt with: the epistemological status of bilingual lexicography and its relationships with linguistics; the semantic hindrances to equivalence; the peculiarity of translation in bilingual lexicography; the contributions of semantics to lexicography. Special attention is also given to the concepts of semantic, referential and cultural gaps and to the lexical gaps in general. In the last two chapters, the focus shifts to connotation and to some approaches that stress the importance of cultural values in language. The second part is a corpus-based study on the letter A of four Italian-French contemporary dictionaries (Boch, Garzanti, Hachette-Paravia, Larousse). We have tried, in particular, to emphasize the role and the typology of the gaps occurring in the equivalence, especially of cultural gaps. Then, we focus on culture-bound examples. Finally, we deal with cultural notes and some false borrowings in Italian, in order to show other aspects of equivalence.

Full textThe research aims at investigating contacts and connections between the translation of children’s literature and feminist translation theory. More specifically, the study explores the possibility of translating with a gender-sensitive approach. By focusing mainly, but not exclusively, on children’s classics translated by women, the research examines if, how and to what extent a gendered approach to the translation of children’s literature can be identified and verified if in translating classics for children an increasing attention has been paid to gender and gender-related issues. The research was further limited in genre and addressee terms to classic novels aimed at school-age readers. We also decided to work within a diachronic and comparative frame so as to identify linguistic, textual and paratextual strategies adopted with regards to gender-related aspects when translating for children. The analysis of the relations between gender and the translation of children’s classics was divided into two different but complementary parts. A quantitative study was first carried out on a collection of 1,136 Italian translations of 4 French and 4 English classics published from 1930 onwards. Drawing on this quite extensive collection, three specific case studies have been identified (La petite Fadette, Poil de Carotte, and The Secret Garden) and fifteen Italian translations have been selected for a qualitative textual analysis of gender-related translational practices. While the qualitative textual analysis highlights the strategies through which the relations between gender and translation are textually constructed and revealed, the quantitative study gives an overview of the presence of male and female translators in that specific field of children’s books, that is children’s classics. The main linguistic, textual and paratextual strategies identified in the translation of gender-related aspects in children’s classics are grouped into four main sections: representation of characters; representation of mother figures; linguistic remarks; and paratextual spaces.

Full textThe present work contributes to studies of diachronic terminology in French. The dissertation focuses on the analysis of French vocabulary of winemaking between the 18th and 19th centuries, when the concept of enology as a science emerged. The study is divided into two parts. The former starts analysing the terms vinification and œnologie from a lexico-semantic point of view in order to define the subject of the research. The analysis is followed by a reconstruction of the historical and textual framework in which the themes of vine and wine are developed. The process of winemaking based on the eighteenth and nineteenth-century reference sources is then described; this description allows tracing the passage from tradition to modernity, showing the main scientific discoveries and technological achievements occurred in the field. The latter is the linguistic one. After a methodological introduction about the creation of the corpus and the description of our selection criteria, the selected terms are collected in lexical records exploring lexical and semantic information. The study of terms also allowed to build from an historical point of view the conceptual framework of the field. The classification of the period in three phases offered a closer analysis of lexical and semantic issues in the evolution of the vocabulary. Finally, the conclusion section discusses the results of the research and outlines further perspectives of study.

Full textThis thesis presents a sociolinguistic analysis of the role of French and Italian in the migration context, notably in the community of francophone Senegalese immigrants in Brescia. In the first part, the first chapter is dedicated to Senegal, which is described in its historical, ethnic, cultural, religious and linguistic features. The evolution of the Senegalese diaspora in Europe and Italy is also tackled in its different stages. The second chapter focuses on Brescia, elective hometown of the Senegalese in Italy, because of it socio-economic features which make it a territory particularly favorable to the creation of solidarity networks between Senegalese and Italians. The second part is entirely dedicated to the sociolinguistic analysis of the languages involved in this context. The survey is based on twenty interviews made with a sample of Senegalese immigrants in Brescia, from which the linguistic practices and representations of the subjects, about the languages known and spoken, emerge. In the conclusions of the thesis, a global view on the research carried out and on the method adopted for the survey will be given.

Full textThis work presents a comparative study of the main characters of insurance terminology in Italian and French language. The special purpose of language requires, fast and accurate communication for a limited group of experts who prefers a language that conveys information clear at an international level. The terminology is, therefore, the encyclopaedic knowledge of a specialized discipline, and offers the possibility to investigate and explore the different aspects of the specialized area. For our work, we have summarized in three different moments the insurance practice: 1. the history and the origins of insurance terminology; 2. description of the sources of insurance matters and analysis of dominant text types; 3. terminology studies applied to translation practice, with a review of sources of specialized lexicography. Finally, the work will be attached a descriptive glossary of insurance matters, with the aim to give a reference tool for the public and for translators.
