Full textThis thesis describes and analyses the teaching of Portuguese in Italian universities, paying particular attention to the Brazilian variety. In order to capture the inter-related set of factors composing the teaching/learning process in these particular settings, our research takes three main angles: i) a reflection on the geographical varieties of Portuguese, in particular Brazilian, on the basis of contemporary linguistic and sociolinguistic studies in this area; ii) a survey of the current state of teaching of Portuguese in Italian universities, with quantitative analysis of the results of an online questionnaire; iii) a qualitative account of teaching practices, both face-to-face and online, based respectively on the linguistic and cultural analysis of teaching materials used in universities, and on that of interactions between students working in teletandem. Our work has allowed us to trace a representative picture of the teaching of Portuguese in academia, and to show how online activities can complement traditional teaching, emphasising the links between language and culture and thereby contextualising the learning of the language and culture of Brazil.

Full textSince the turn of the 21st century, the Portuguese and Brazilian dramas inspired by the classical antiquity, previously overlooked or simply ignored by international critics, have been subject of more widespread and systematic studies, in connection with both their ancient references and similar modern production. Nevertheless, in this context national perspectives or interests have often been predominant; furthermore, research has usually concerned individual narratives, characters or motives. A comprehensive survey would be now very useful, but it is not yet available. The present thesis is just meant to offer a contribution in this regard, by providing an annotated map of most of the relevant works: all those which belong to the three main mythical cycles (Argonautic, Theban, Trojan). According to my data, the striking corpus consists in thirteen plays (six Portuguese and seven Brazilian) for the first cycle; twenty-one (fourteen Portuguese and seven Brazilian) for the second, and twenty-two (eighteen Portuguese and four Brazilian) for the third.

Full textThis study is intended to clarify the cultural dynamics belonging to end of the century, examining some literatures, especially poetic literature, one of the most important being Só by António Nobre. In 1890 the English Ultimatum destroys the Imperial plan for Africa, causing a conflicts whose results are noticed not only by a comparison with the Other, but most of all, because of its symbolic implications, in terms of a comparison of National perceptions itself. Ultimatum questions the iper identity described by Eduardo Lourenço as the result of the history featuring an atlantic deviation in relation to the rest of Europe and resulting from centuries of literature as the most authentic image of Portugal. Simultaneously it marks the distance from European modern image that tightly connected to Imperial plan was the foundations of identity. The poetry of that period follows the apocalyptic paradigm that associates crying and the invective as elements of a Messianic expectation of redemption: anger is followed by invitation to look back to past glories so to strengthen decayed Portugal. Reviewing the past and the National space as a rinvigorating period is a constant feature of neo romantic literature, however the poetry of Antonio Nobre can’t be viewed as such interpretation: there is no recovery of a golden age, on the contrary, the author proof to be modern declaring that it is not possible to purse an image that rather than lost never existed and therefore proove its fetish nature.

Full textStarting from an historical overview about last Portuguese colonial empire, the thesis intend to show how the myth of empire contributed in defining Portuguese national identity and Portuguese cultural and literary patrimony. Myth is mostly investigated in its linguistic and discursive components, as being a peculiar way of constructing “constellations” of images. In such context, literature takes on a specific importance, as its formal resources may enable it to oppose its powerful articulation to mythical fixity and to the automatisms of translation imperii, which reproduce the “imagination of the centre”. Then, by pointing up narrative focalisation and narrative figures of a literary corpus of novels belonging to the so called “retornados literature”, I intend to research different ways of critically assuming imperial canon and of going beyond it.

Full textThis thesis focuses on the interdisciplinarity between literature and photography according to a re-reading of the recent history of Mozambique. It starts from an enquiry into the colonial archive and the oral tradition partly merged with the “estoria” through which the popular heritage of the traditional narrative is recovered. The dialogue between verbal and visual expression allows new possible interpretations in the post- colonial debate between memory, trauma and representation. A comparative analysis between Coelho’s narrative and Rangel’s photography reveals different views of the external world but also convergencies marked by common forms of expression. Photography fills some gaps bringing about a certain vision of the past which is however just a representation of reality and not reality itself. The literary text thanks to its dialogic approach allows a complex re-elaboration of both semantic and cultural data supplying clues for a re-writing of History. The convergence between the visual and the narrative expression marks the boundaries of what can actually be communicated. The dialogue between those forms establishes the peculiarity of the Mozambican literature which according to Luandino Viera’s “...in the postcolonial context writers are satellites in orbit round the black holes of history” whose force of attraction allows a new organization of the entire literary heritage.

Full textStarting from the concepts of the centre and the periphery, this thesis analyses their representation in Brazilian contemporary literature and their relationship in the Brazilian and international publishing market. Focusing on four Brazilian contemporary writers with different personal and creative paths – Rodrigo Ciríaco, Marcelino Freire, Ana Paula Maia e Patrícia Melo – this research aims to demonstrate that they can be placed on an imaginary line, which develops through multiple gradations. Therefore, this continuum is opposed to a binary opposition’s point of view. From this perspective, the emergence of a new literary movement from the suburbs of Brazilian big cities, the literatura periférica, is analyzed in order to try to understand how it is different, or not, from other literary discourses. Finally, the thesis observes the presence of Brazilian writers, especially exponents of literatura periférica, in the international publishing market, through their translation and participation in major international cultural events such as Frankfurt Book Fair and Paris Book Fair.

Full textThe aim of this dissertation is to study the reinterpretation of the traumatic memory of the colonial war in Angola in António Lobo Antunes' literature. We use a genealogic approach based on Foucault's essay on Nietzsche, geneaology and history. By means of Foucault's genealogy we can reconsider literature as a non-official archive of stories, so saving memory from oblivion. We study three novels by Lobo Antunes: Os Cus de Judas, O Esplendor de Portugal and Comissão das Lágrimas. Os Cus de Judas is one of the first novels based on the direct experience of the colonial war. O Esplendor de Portugal is the central text of this trio, in which various topics emerge. Most notably the disintegration of the colonialism, and the difficult integration in the Portugues society of the “retornados” (settlers back to the homeland after the indipendence of Angola). Comissão das Lágrimas is the final step of our journey. It's a novel composed by the voices the narrators which describes the violences committed by the government against the political opponents.
