In particular, I want to know how Quechua-speaking people from the highlands and valleys adapt to lowland culture; which ethnic traits and linguistic resources they keep, and which ones they abandon; and which strategies they utilize to ease the process of adaptation. The results indicate that highland migrants who settled in the lowland community of Cuatro Cañadas (department of Santa Cruz) speak less Quechua among themselves, and especially with their children, although they assign great importance to the maintenance of this language. Four specific cultural practices that were selected as indicators of Quechua mode of life were measured and analyzed. The results indicate that there is a substantial reduction of these practices in the lowlands. Also, inter-ethnic marriage (highlanders seeking lowlanders), thought to be an important strategy of adaptation, was found to be a preference for a reduced proportion of both the single migrant population and the married population. Therefore, migrants in Cuatro Cañadas are reducing their traditional linguistic behavior and the practice of specific cultural traditions, but their alliance patterns are still somewhat conservative. In spite of this process of acculturation, the theoretical framework used in this research argues that highland migrants do not fully own Cuatro Cañadas: they are trapped between traditional, modern and globalizing codes, and just embrace the hybrid nature of their identities, which makes them speak and behave in certain ways depending on which ethnic identity they want to activate.

Abstract:
In this dissertation I explore the impact that language-migration has on Self-Identity. The thesis consists of two parts: a memoir The Strangeness of Freedom, and an exegesis. Each is intended to stand alone, but also to complement the other. In the memoir I draw on my personal recollections of my family's migrations across five countries (Czechoslovakia, West Germany, USA and Australia) and into three languages (Czech, German and English) in order to convey my particular experience of language migration. In the exegesis I analyse several memoirs written by other language migrants and examine what impact they believe migrating into a new language and culture had on their own Self-identity. I draw on postmodern and psychoanalytic theory to explore the nature of Self-Identity formation and why migrants, as well as non-migrants might experience a change in their Self-identity during the course of their lives. I attempt to tease out to what extent the change in Self-identity is a universal experience that results from living across time and moving from a known past into an unknown future, regardless of whether one physically migrates or not. I found that while language-migrants tend to describe a more intense disruption of their Self-Identity, non-migrants also experience such a disruption in their sense of Self, simply by living in a rapidly changing world. I propose that while changing locations and languages clearly disrupts the continuity we presume life entails, it is in fact the passage of time that distances us from our known past, including our familiar Self, even if we never physically or linguistically migrate.

The main objective is to analyze the formation of commercial names, observing the neologisms of all kinds, including foreignisms and loans from the linguistic point of view linked to the cultural aspect. In view of the importance of the name of an establishment in the commercial context. The hypotheses presented in this study claims that the process of creation/formation of commercial names, as well as the cultural relevance and identities of these names for the inhabitants of the city, through the understanding that the name is an instrument of the definition of identity and is often through neologisms, loans and foreignisms. Furthermore, in the commercial context, naming a product or space with words of a language that is thought to be known by many people, and that conveys the idea of prestige is a way of speaking and negotiating efficiently, providing investments in creative advertising, especially in other languages that convey the idea of a globalized world. For this analysis, first, the names of ten clothing stores and nine salons were collected in Palmas, the capital of the State of Tocantins and in Catalão, a city in rural Goiás, with the intention of comparing the formations of the names and explaining them, after the interviews with the owners of the businesses , which was another important step in the collection information for analysis of training and possible motivations for the use of these names by the busniness owners, as well as demonstrating the type of morphosyntactic structure of these names and their spelling. The studies are based on authors who discuss the changes observed in the Portuguese language lexicon such as Alves (1990), Bechara (1996), Carvalho (2009), Correia and Barcellos Almeida (2012), Bizzocchi (2013), and by those who deal with identity Bauman (2005) and Hall (2005), as well as Cabral and Viegas (2007) with their essays on the importance of name. In conclusion, the choices show the concern with the formation of a commercial name in order to attract the attention of the public and, in the search to differentiate their business, use names with stylized writing, in an attempt to bring some unusual element to the writing. There is also the use of resources that break the rules of official spelling, often imitating the writing of the English language when naming their establishments, whether influenced by products or services they offer, and in making such choices are revealing aspects that motivate the contemporary subject, that is, the need to respond to a global connection that shows, at the same time, something different to the people, the easiness of hybridity in relation to the new and the different.

Abstract: The study described in this dissertation has investigated the representations, here understood as discursive constructions, of bilingual parents of intercultural marriages to describe and understand the ways in which these couples' representations shape their disposition to transmit their Immigrant Spouse's Mother Tongue (ISMT) within the family setting. It is a qualitative study which conducts an interpretative analysis of the participants' representation of family bilingualism, their own cultural and linguistic identities and that of their spouse's. The theory which supports this study was generated mainly in the field of Applied Linguistics, in an interface with Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Language Policies and Cultural Studies. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews aiming to delineate the participants' profile utilizing a life story approach. The participants in this study were 7 bilingual parents (4 immigrants and 3 Brazilian citizens) living in Brazil at the time of the interviews, who were or had been married to speakers of a mother tongue other than their own. The study aimed to identify among other factors a) the (spouses' themselves, their children's, relatives', friends', etc.) representations of the languages and cultures at play within the family; b) the status of the languages within the family; c) the spouses' multilingual and multicultural background; d) the social-historical context at the time of immigration and e) the relationships of power between the couple as influential in the (non)transmission of the Immigrant Spouse's Mother Tongue to their children within the family setting. It must be highlighted, however, that none of these factors alone can be regarded as conclusive to the language policy adopted within the family as such policies can only be explained when considered the interrelation among those factors. The study intends to offer subsidies on family language policies that promote the transmission of the immigrant parents' language, i.e., the minority language within the family, to their children
Mestrado
Multiculturalismo, Plurilinguismo e Educação Bilingue
Mestre em Linguística Aplicada

Abstract:
In this qualitative study, I explore the linguistic and cultural influence of Korean ethnic churches on Korean Canadian students' heritage language and cultural identity maintenance in Montreal. Despite the extensive involvement of Korean immigrants in ethnic churches, very little is known about the linguistic and cultural role of these churches for adult Korean immigrants, let alone for their younger generations who grow up in Canada. Therefore, my research questions focus on how Korean ethnic churches support heritage language and cultural identity maintenance for the younger generations of Korean immigrant families in the Montreal context. I employed an ethnographic and qualitative approach and elicited data from qualitative interviews, participant observation, and group discussions. Data collection took place over a four month period from January through April, 2008. The participants (n=37 in total) were Korean Canadian students who live in Montreal and attend a Korean ethnic church (n=15), their parents (n=10), heritage language and Bible study teachers (n=4), and pastors of the church and of other Korean ethnic churches in the city (n=4). Another group of Korean Canadian students who were not members of a Korean ethnic church was also included (n=4). The results of the study show that Korean ethnic churches in Montreal do indeed play important roles for the maintenance of the HL and cultural identity for the younger generations of Korean immigrant families as major ethnic community institutions. Thus, the Korean ethnic churches are found to have roles far beyond their original religious role. The findings of this study suggest that all the members of the Korean ethnic churches should be more aware of their responsibility for upholding the linguistic and cultural role of the Korean ethnic churches. In addition, all the members of the Korean ethnic churches should make better use of current institutional resources such as the use of heritage language within t
Abstract:

My research examines how the writers of the Granada Pioneer, a newspaper published in a Japanese American internment camp during World War II, used the editorial column of that publication to shape the community identity of that camp. The newspaper was published by Japanese America internees living in that camp, but their readership was composed of Japanese American internees and also non-interned non-Japanese Americans. Using Critical Discourse Analysis, I found that the internee writers were using the editorial column to shape a community habitus within the internment camp while at the same time attempting to reshape the imagined community of "America" within the minds of all their readers. In addition, I found that though the internee writers were subject to administrative censorship, they were able to circumvent that censorship by reprinting editorial columns from mainstream newspapers and thus express sentiments that they themselves were not permitted to published.
