In particular, I want to know how Quechua-speaking people from the highlands and valleys adapt to lowland culture; which ethnic traits and linguistic resources they keep, and which ones they abandon; and which strategies they utilize to ease the process of adaptation. The results indicate that highland migrants who settled in the lowland community of Cuatro Cañadas (department of Santa Cruz) speak less Quechua among themselves, and especially with their children, although they assign great importance to the maintenance of this language. Four specific cultural practices that were selected as indicators of Quechua mode of life were measured and analyzed. The results indicate that there is a substantial reduction of these practices in the lowlands. Also, inter-ethnic marriage (highlanders seeking lowlanders), thought to be an important strategy of adaptation, was found to be a preference for a reduced proportion of both the single migrant population and the married population. Therefore, migrants in Cuatro Cañadas are reducing their traditional linguistic behavior and the practice of specific cultural traditions, but their alliance patterns are still somewhat conservative. In spite of this process of acculturation, the theoretical framework used in this research argues that highland migrants do not fully own Cuatro Cañadas: they are trapped between traditional, modern and globalizing codes, and just embrace the hybrid nature of their identities, which makes them speak and behave in certain ways depending on which ethnic identity they want to activate.

Abstract:
In this dissertation I explore the impact that language-migration has on Self-Identity. The thesis consists of two parts: a memoir The Strangeness of Freedom, and an exegesis. Each is intended to stand alone, but also to complement the other. In the memoir I draw on my personal recollections of my family's migrations across five countries (Czechoslovakia, West Germany, USA and Australia) and into three languages (Czech, German and English) in order to convey my particular experience of language migration. In the exegesis I analyse several memoirs written by other language migrants and examine what impact they believe migrating into a new language and culture had on their own Self-identity. I draw on postmodern and psychoanalytic theory to explore the nature of Self-Identity formation and why migrants, as well as non-migrants might experience a change in their Self-identity during the course of their lives. I attempt to tease out to what extent the change in Self-identity is a universal experience that results from living across time and moving from a known past into an unknown future, regardless of whether one physically migrates or not. I found that while language-migrants tend to describe a more intense disruption of their Self-Identity, non-migrants also experience such a disruption in their sense of Self, simply by living in a rapidly changing world. I propose that while changing locations and languages clearly disrupts the continuity we presume life entails, it is in fact the passage of time that distances us from our known past, including our familiar Self, even if we never physically or linguistically migrate.

The main objective is to analyze the formation of commercial names, observing the neologisms of all kinds, including foreignisms and loans from the linguistic point of view linked to the cultural aspect. In view of the importance of the name of an establishment in the commercial context. The hypotheses presented in this study claims that the process of creation/formation of commercial names, as well as the cultural relevance and identities of these names for the inhabitants of the city, through the understanding that the name is an instrument of the definition of identity and is often through neologisms, loans and foreignisms. Furthermore, in the commercial context, naming a product or space with words of a language that is thought to be known by many people, and that conveys the idea of prestige is a way of speaking and negotiating efficiently, providing investments in creative advertising, especially in other languages that convey the idea of a globalized world. For this analysis, first, the names of ten clothing stores and nine salons were collected in Palmas, the capital of the State of Tocantins and in Catalão, a city in rural Goiás, with the intention of comparing the formations of the names and explaining them, after the interviews with the owners of the businesses , which was another important step in the collection information for analysis of training and possible motivations for the use of these names by the busniness owners, as well as demonstrating the type of morphosyntactic structure of these names and their spelling. The studies are based on authors who discuss the changes observed in the Portuguese language lexicon such as Alves (1990), Bechara (1996), Carvalho (2009), Correia and Barcellos Almeida (2012), Bizzocchi (2013), and by those who deal with identity Bauman (2005) and Hall (2005), as well as Cabral and Viegas (2007) with their essays on the importance of name. In conclusion, the choices show the concern with the formation of a commercial name in order to attract the attention of the public and, in the search to differentiate their business, use names with stylized writing, in an attempt to bring some unusual element to the writing. There is also the use of resources that break the rules of official spelling, often imitating the writing of the English language when naming their establishments, whether influenced by products or services they offer, and in making such choices are revealing aspects that motivate the contemporary subject, that is, the need to respond to a global connection that shows, at the same time, something different to the people, the easiness of hybridity in relation to the new and the different.

Abstract: The study described in this dissertation has investigated the representations, here understood as discursive constructions, of bilingual parents of intercultural marriages to describe and understand the ways in which these couples' representations shape their disposition to transmit their Immigrant Spouse's Mother Tongue (ISMT) within the family setting. It is a qualitative study which conducts an interpretative analysis of the participants' representation of family bilingualism, their own cultural and linguistic identities and that of their spouse's. The theory which supports this study was generated mainly in the field of Applied Linguistics, in an interface with Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Language Policies and Cultural Studies. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews aiming to delineate the participants' profile utilizing a life story approach. The participants in this study were 7 bilingual parents (4 immigrants and 3 Brazilian citizens) living in Brazil at the time of the interviews, who were or had been married to speakers of a mother tongue other than their own. The study aimed to identify among other factors a) the (spouses' themselves, their children's, relatives', friends', etc.) representations of the languages and cultures at play within the family; b) the status of the languages within the family; c) the spouses' multilingual and multicultural background; d) the social-historical context at the time of immigration and e) the relationships of power between the couple as influential in the (non)transmission of the Immigrant Spouse's Mother Tongue to their children within the family setting. It must be highlighted, however, that none of these factors alone can be regarded as conclusive to the language policy adopted within the family as such policies can only be explained when considered the interrelation among those factors. Abstract:
In this qualitative study, I explore the linguistic and cultural influence of Korean ethnic churches on Korean Canadian students' heritage language and cultural identity maintenance in Montreal. Despite the extensive involvement of Korean immigrants in ethnic churches, very little is known about the linguistic and cultural role of these churches for adult Korean immigrants, let alone for their younger generations who grow up in Canada. Therefore, my research questions focus on how Korean ethnic churches support heritage language and cultural identity maintenance for the younger generations of Korean immigrant families in the Montreal context. I employed an ethnographic and qualitative approach and elicited data from qualitative interviews, participant observation, and group discussions. Data collection took place over a four month period from January through April, 2008. The participants (n=37 in total) were Korean Canadian students who live in Montreal and attend a Korean ethnic church (n=15), their parents (n=10), heritage language and Bible study teachers (n=4), and pastors of the church and of other Korean ethnic churches in the city (n=4). Another group of Korean Canadian students who were not members of a Korean ethnic church was also included (n=4). The results of the study show that Korean ethnic churches in Montreal do indeed play important roles for the maintenance of the HL and cultural identity for the younger generations of Korean immigrant families as major ethnic community institutions. Thus, the Korean ethnic churches are found to have roles far beyond their original religious role. The findings of this study suggest that all the members of the Korean ethnic churches should be more aware of their responsibility for upholding the linguistic and cultural role of the Korean ethnic churches. In addition, all the members of the Korean ethnic churches should make better use of current institutional resources such as the use of heritage language within t
Abstract:

My research examines how the writers of the Granada Pioneer, a newspaper published in a Japanese American internment camp during World War II, used the editorial column of that publication to shape the community identity of that camp. The newspaper was published by Japanese America internees living in that camp, but their readership was composed of Japanese American internees and also non-interned non-Japanese Americans. Using Critical Discourse Analysis, I found that the internee writers were using the editorial column to shape a community habitus within the internment camp while at the same time attempting to reshape the imagined community of "America" within the minds of all their readers. In addition, I found that though the internee writers were subject to administrative censorship, they were able to circumvent that censorship by reprinting editorial columns from mainstream newspapers and thus express sentiments that they themselves were not permitted to published.

Abstract:

This dissertation investigates the semiotic resources that Singaporeans combine, balance, and negotiate in order to enact a “proper” Singaporean identity. The analysis considers a variety of semiotic resources, ranging from fine-grained phonetic variables to language varieties to education or career paths. The meaningful organization and use of these semiotic resources are situated within Singapore’s broader sociopolitical discourses of nationhood, that is, how Singaporeans perceive themselves as a nation and citizens of that nation according to participation—or non-participation—in institutional discourses. I show how the notion of being “proper” as well as evaluations of “properness” are associated with social and linguistic practices that index (Silverstein 2003) meanings of being global and local, often simultaneously or in balance. Furthermore, this work extends Eckert’s (2008) concept of indexical fields , acknowledging that variables index multiple social meanings, any one of which have the potential to be activated in use. In the enactment of a “proper” identity, I investigate how these meanings are continuously co-constructed in interaction (Bucholtz and Hall 2005).

The (re-)production of “proper” ways of speaking and being are part of the processes of enregisterment (Agha 2007), via a semiotic repertoire, which is then available for public circulation and performable cultural models of behavior. This work examines the range and flexibility of resources that constitute a semiotic repertoire through a combination of qualitative and quantitative analyses—connecting macro-level discourses, such as the circulation of sociocultural stereotypes, to variation in speakers’ day to day language use, including micro-level investigations, such as the perception of voice onset time in Singapore English. This work highlights the many ways in which social identities and meanings are contextualized in and emerge out of interactions that regiment and discipline the behaviors of the self and others.

Abstract:
This dissertation draws on the specific case-study of post-war Lebanese political rhetoric in order to take a close look at the ways in which a complex amalgam of distinct and varying histories is articulated linguistically under one national rubric. Research was conducted largely in the urban Beirut region of Lebanon from 1999 to 2001. By analysis of specific linguistic strategies for maneuvering within and between interpretive frames (in particular, Arabism, Lebanese Nationalism and Sectarianism) I have illustrated how Lebanese political actors are able to draw on language, in both its form and content, in order to establish and define their political identity. I also argue that these political actors are able to accomplish social work: they modify relationships, incite discussion, and motivate change through their talk. Through various forms of linguistic incorporation speakers actively work to redefine or to reaffirm authority in the public sphere. I have tried to illustrate how the historical situatedness of the interpretive frames that they utilize affects and limits their ability to do so in a uniquely post-war Lebanese fashion, by drawing on the points of contested meaning in an environment of active political re-configuration. This focus moves away from definitive interpretations of discourse and instead concentrates on interpretive flexibility, with an eye to understanding how that flexibility is constrained. The discursive space of the Lebanese public sphere, then, becomes a primary site for political and civil identity construction through the use and re-use of political discourse.

Abstract:
Magister Artium - MA
Globalization has evidently led to an increase in the flow of immigrants across the world, a fact that has and continues to play a significant role in the development of studies on immigration, immigration patterns and the psycho-social struggles that immigrants face; of which identity negotiation in the new context is included. A number of works have been done on the identity negotiation and identity-forming process of immigrant youth. This study attempts to highlight, rather specifically, the unique challenges that 1.5 generation immigrant youth have in forming their identities. Rumbaut coined the term “one-and-a-half generation” to describe “children of Cuban exiles who were born in Cuba but have come of age in the United States” (1976:8). Thus the 1.5 generation immigrant youth constitutes children who were born in their country of origin but was raised and received the education and important experiences in the host country. Hence, the issue of identity becomes important for adolescents such as the 1.5 generation growing up in Diasporic settings. How they come to define who they are, their place in the world and others’ perception of them have significant implications for their successful integration into their new societies (Ogbuagu, 2013). This study takes a socio-cultural approach to investigating the identity negotiation and construction of 1.5 generation Congolese immigrant youth. Sociocultural linguistics refers to an interdisciplinary field which considers language as a sociocultural phenomenon; hence positioning identity as a phenomenon that is socially constructed through language and hence, performed within interaction and conversations.

Abstract:
The central objective of this paper is to investigate how the experience of living with HIV/AIDS in the U.S. impacts an individual's sense of identity and to what extent this identity is influenced by the institutional ideologies of AIDS service organizations and the "dominant discourse" of AIDS these organizations help produce. My analysis is based upon three years of participant-observation at Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC), a major AIDS service organization in New York City, as well as in-depth semi-structured interviews with 34 HIV positive individuals, all of whom are clients of either GMHC or another AIDS-related service agency in New York. In addition, I juxtapose the interview-derived speech data of HIVers with an examination of various kinds of textual material about AIDS--written texts that constitute what I characterize as a "dominant discourse" of AIDS. As my primary unit of analysis, I examine the narratives of self-transformation articulated by interviewees, stories that are quite literally about identity reconstruction. Through these narratives, HIV positive individuals construct their HIV diagnosis as a significant turning point in their lives, interpreting this event as an opportunity to refashion themselves into "better" people and to begin their lives anew. Narratives of self-transformation function to rehabilitate HIVers' identities since the new identities many interviewees claim to have achieved after their HIV-impelled journeys of self-reinvention are crafted in accordance with the normative model of HIVer identity established in the dominant discourse.

The aim of this study is to discuss the deletion of German language, culture and identity traces in Juiz de Fora city, Brazil. By means of ethnographic research, with semi-structured interviews, as well of documental research, and on Ecolinguistics theoretical basis (MUFWENE, 2001, 2008; COUTO, 2007, 2009), we investigate and reflect on the possible ecological aspects that influenced this linguistic and cultural deletion in the city during the adaptation process of the immigrants to the new land. Therefore, we believe that this deletion happened as a long and gradual process, influenced by several factors, including the hegemony of Portuguese language. Such a situation is quite different from what happened in other parts of Brazil, where there are visible marks of German varieties in their dialects (BORSTEL, 2011; PEREIRA, 2005), as well as many cultural heritages from the immigrants. In this sense, this work has the following main objectives: (i) to identify which varieties of German language arrived in Juiz de Fora; (ii) to trace the history of the linguistic contacts that took place in the city; (iii) to identify ecological factors that possibly influenced the deletion process of the varieties of the German language that arrived in Juiz de Fora. Thus, this study demonstrates how German immigrants German immigrants were taken to (re)construct their identities, leaving behind their origins and hence their linguistic and cultural heritages over time.

Fitzpatrick, Lesley Maria Gerard. "Inventing cultural heroes : a critical exploration of the discursive role of culture, nationalism and hegemony in the Australian rural and remote health sector." Queensland University of Technology, 2006. http://eprints.qut.edu.au/16371/.

Full text
Abstract:
Rural and remote areas of Australia remain the last bastion of health disadvantage in a developed nation with an enviable health score-card. During the last ten years, rural and remote health has emerged as a significant issue in the media and the political arena. This thesis examines print media, policy documents and interviews from selected informants to ascertain how they represent medical practitioners and health services in rural and remote areas of Australia, why they do so, and the consequences of such positions. In many of these representations, rural and remote medical practitioners are aligned with national and cultural mythologies, while health services are characterised as dysfunctional and at crisis point. Ostensibly, the representations and identity formulations are aimed at redressing the health inequities in remote rural and Australia. They define and elaborate debates and contestations about needs and claims and how they should be addressed; a process that is crucial in the development of professional identity and power (Fraser; 1989). The research involves an analysis and critical reading of the entwined discourses of culture, power, and the politics of need. Following Wodak and others (1999), these dynamics are explored by examining documents that are part of the discursive constitution of the field. In particular, the research examines how prevailing cultural concepts are used to configure the Australian rural and remote medical practitioner in ways that reflect and advance socio-cultural hegemony. The conceptual tools used to explore these dynamics are drawn from critical and post-structural theory, and draw upon the work of Nancy Fraser (1989; 1997) and Ruth Wodak (1999). Both theorists developed approaches that enable investigation into the effects of language use in order to understand how the cultural framing of particular work can influence power relations in a professional field. The research follows a cultural studies approach, focussing on texts as objects of research and acknowledging the importance of discourse in the development of cultural meaning (Nightingale, 1993). The methodological approach employs Critical Discourse Analysis, specifically the Discourse Historical Method (Wodak, 1999). It is used to explore the linguistic hallmarks of social and cultural processes and structures, and to identify the ways in which political control and dominance are advanced through language-based strategies. An analytical tool developed by Ruth Wodak, Rudolf de Cillia, Martin Reisigl and Karin Leibhart (1999) was adapted and used to identify nationalistic identity formulations and related linguistic manoeuvres in the texts. The dissertation argues that the textual linguistic manoeuvres and identity formulations produce and privilege a particular identity for rural and remote medical practitioners, and that cultural myth is used to popularise, shore up and advance the goals of rural doctors during a period of crisis and change. Important in this process is the differentiation of rural and remote medicine from other disciplines in order to define and advance its political needs and claims (Fraser, 1989). This activity has unexpected legacies for the rural and remote health sector. In developing a strong identity for rural doctors, discursive rules have been established by the discipline regarding roles, personal and professional characteristics, and practice style; rules which hold confounding factors for the sustainability of remote and rural medical practice and health care generally. These factors include: the professional fragmentation of the discipline of primary medical care into general practice and rural medicine; and identity formulations that do not accommodate an ageing workforce characterised by cultural diversity, decreasing engagement in full time work, and a higher proportion of women participants. Both of these factors have repercussions for the recruitment and retention of rural and remote health professionals and the maintenance of a sustainable health workforce. The dissertation argues that the formulated identities of rural and remote medical practitioners in the texts maintain and reproduce relationships of cultural, political and social power. They have also influenced the ways in which rural and remote health services have been developed and funded. They selectively represent and value particular roles and approaches to health care. In doing so, they misrepresent the breadth and complexities of rural and remote health issues, and reinforce a reputational economy built on differential professional and cultural respect, and political and economic advantage. This disadvantages the community, professions and interest groups of lower value and esteem, and other groups whose voices are often not heard. Thus, regardless of their altruistic motivations, the politics of identity and differentiation employed in the formulated identities in the texts are based on an approach that undermines the redistributive goals of justice and equity (Fraser 1997), and works primarily to develop and advantage the discipline of rural medicine.

In order to do so, we chose to carry out a research based on the theoretical and methodological presuppositions of sociolinguistics, of an ethnographical nature. The corpus of the research comprises six advertisements, interviews with German descendants and texts composed by 5th-grade students. Regarding the advertisements, we chose four from the car manufacturer Volkswagen (Golf G4, É Nóis, Rigorosos e Contrário), and two from Casa Leonhardt, one in the city of Marechal Cândido Rondon and the other in the city of Palotina. After a previous analysis of the advertisements, which revealed sociolinguistic traces of the German language, they were presented to the informer, so that they could show their reception and evaluation of the advertisements. The informers were selected in the city of Marechal Cândido Rondon, in which descendants of German immigrants settled, and in the district of Santa Rita D Oeste Terra Roxa, which, besides presenting a considerable number of German speakers, is where the Casa Leonardt head office is located. In the interviews, beside the advertisements, questions regarding identity, beliefs and attitudes, and preservation of the German language and culture, were discussed, as well as the public policies needed for this preservation and, eventually, the teaching of Portuguese and German. The last subject of the corpus was related to the analysis of texts composed by students, in which they reveal the linguistic transferences from German to Portuguese. This analysis had in mind a teaching proposal in this context of language contact. Among other results, obtained through interviews, we found out that most informants approve the use of the German language in commercial advertisements. They also acknowledge that this kind of language attracts the attention of the public more efficiently than the traditional monolingual advertisements, thus acting as a means to persuade the potential buyer.

Abstract:
To a large degree, historical analyses of the Levantine region tend to focus primarily upon martial interaction and state formation. However, perhaps of equitable impact is the chronology of those interactions which are cultural in nature. The long-term formative effect of cultural imperialism and cultural bleed can easily be as influential as the direct alterations imposed by martial invasion. While this study does not attempt to establish comparative causal weight or catalytic impact between these types of interactions, it does contend that the cultural evolution of the Levant has been significantly influenced by external interaction for a period of time extending beyond the Levantine Islamic Expansion. This study presents a chronological examination of the region from the pre-Expansion Period through the Mandate Period, focused upon relevant cultural structures. Specifically, emphasis is placed upon religious, ethnic, and nationalistic identity development, sociolinguistic shifts, and institutional changes within the societal structure. The primary conclusion of this study is that significant evidence exists to support a long-term historical narrative of externally influenced Levantine cultural evolution, inclusive of both adaptive and reactive interactions.
B.A.
Bachelors
Arts and Humanities
History

Abstract:
Using an applied anthropological approach focused on language, this study investigates the relationship between linguistic, racial, and ethnic identities and school resource access in the context of migration. This project examines how these identities are established, experienced, reified, and resisted by various school actors. Exposing power at its roots through a multi-level analysis, this research informs on how people negotiate socialization into particular identities, propelling them toward positions in school and society of varying opportunity. Focused on two elementary schools in a central Florida county that has been and is undergoing demographic changes, this work offers applications for educational institutions dealing with migration. One school’s orientation to meeting needs of non-English speaking students significantly impacts its ability to reach and form relationships with parents and improve the educational outcomes for children. The second school’s culturally responsivity makes it possible to meet higher expectations. At both schools, there is a disconnect between how the school and state think about people and how those people think about themselves, which erases groups and raises questions about how well students from those groups are served. While the ideologies promoted in dominant society are constraining, struggles and resistance do impact and reorganize the system. This study provides recommendations for the research site and similar schools to address linguistic, racial, and ethnic educational inequity. For instance, this project emphasizes the need to provide linguistically appropriate school-home communication. It also offers a means for the schools and state to better serve students by understanding the nuances of identity through more appropriate measures of race and ethnicity.

Abstract: This work intends to reflect about the relationship between subject/language and the process of constitution/construction of identities, in a school space, constituted by cultural and linguistic differences and marked by a situation of hybridisrn, that is, bya coexistence of a set of values and antagonistic truths. This sociolinguistic scenery, constituted by linguistic "minority" groups (majorities treated like minorities), crossed by a relation of unequal forces, with a strong ideological connection, is passed by conflicts on the mother tongue learning process, caused by confront/conflict among linguistic varieties (between a socially privileged standard variety, considered "legitimate" or "legitimized", extolled by the school institution as a reference for the student individual performance evaluation and other varieties considered "not legitimate", institutionally stigmatized, brought to a technical school by worker students). When thinking about identities it is necessary to think about the representation play conceming subject, institution and context involved. In order to think of language and culture representations, it is necessary to think how the cultural and linguistic differences are constructed, how the cultural and linguistic conflicts are instituted and which are the consequences to the construction of identities. When thinking about identities it is necessary to reflect on the tight relationship between constitution of social structures and control about the discourse orders by the social institutions which detain the power. In order to deepen this reflection about a scenery characterized by natural hybridisrn, a relational space marked by "othemess", a space where a relational process of constitution of identities is constructed, it is very important to constitute "a way oflooking at", directed to a ressignification, movement of the reference system and its rules, its stratified values which are established there. When one looks into this scenery this movement makes possible to denaturalize meanings apparently always constituted, meanings considered transparent and to give visibility to the appearing of other positions, other knowledge socially constituted, which are inserted by not dominant social voices, under other forms of linguistic manifestations. This perspective gives visibility to an heterogeneously constituted writing, which to the orthodox discourse on the school imaginary, represents the heterodox, the idiosyncratic and the subversion. In the school cosmos it means the chaos. The perception and valorization of this «difference that differentiates" can contribute to identify subjects under invisibility and it can still make possible to these subjects to position themselves in and by means of writing with no interdiction, it makes possible to these subjects to constitute their identities in and by means of writing
Doutorado
Ensino-Aprendizagem de Lingua Materna
Doutor em Linguística Aplicada

Abstract:
This dissertation focuses on understanding the relationship between linguistic culture and the reader perception of the identity of literary characters in translations from Spanish to Chinese. The study aims to achieve four main objectives. Firstly, to develop a model which will analyze the connection between linguistic culture and the perception of identity of literary characters. This model has been established following a rigorous theoretical revision of seminal literature focusing on the sociological and cognitive features of cultural-linguistic elements. Secondly, to propose a new classification of linguistic culture from a sociological and cognitive perspective in order to better establish the identity of literary characters. Thirdly, to illustrate how pragmatic values of cultural-linguistic elements are translated, and finally, to outline how the identity of characters is translated, and how they are understood by target readers. The research was carried out in two stages. Examples of cultural-linguistic elements were collected from two original Spanish works and their Chinese translations, namely La Colmena and El Jarama. These were then classified according to newly established culturallinguistic categories. Subsequently, a model was designed to analyze the reception of pragmatic values and the information on fictional identities derived by the cultural-linguistic elements. According to the results obtained from the analysis, the following conclusions were reached. Firstly, it was found that the model developed for analyzing the relationship between linguistic culture and the perception of identity of literary characters in translation is effective. It has successfully helped to find out whether target readers could draw identity information from each cultural linguistic element. Secondly, the cultural-linguistic classification is appropriate and useful for establishing the identity of literary characters in a clear and coherent way. Furthermore, the correlation between the use of translation strategies and pragmatic value reception was confirmed, and it is proved that the target language could have an impact on the choice of translation strategies and helps the target reader understand the pragmatic value of cultural linguistic elements. Finally, the study shows that translations do not always ensure that target readers understand the identity of characters in the same way as the source text does for the source reader. The highly accessibility of pragmatic value to target readers does not always lead to correspondingly accurate identity interpretation.

Abstract:
Since the early 20th century, Brazilian music has been the stage for discussions and negotiations on national identity. At different historical moments, ideological tensions and identity projects produced different uses of the Portuguese and English languages in music, either reflecting a fierce nationalism or else some openness to the influence of the foreign other. Along the 20th century, Brazilian music became one of the most important artistic manifestations in the world and an instrument for the dissemination of our language and culture. Brazilian national myths generated throughout history and that contribute to the current image of Brazil, also helped create utopias that were and still are of global interest. Music is seen today, as a tool for increasing Brazilian soft power. This thesis draws on how Portuguese and English have been used in order to portray the power play and identity tensions with the foreign public. Translations of Brazilian songs, the creation of bilingual versions, the promotion of Brazilian cultural diversity, as well as the role of cultural mediators and the potential for transformation of foreign relations, are also discussed in this work

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the daily life of the younger generation of Mexican Americans through a phenomenology design. Specifically, in regard to how the culture-sharing pattern of biculturalism is reflected in their lives and the way they construct their bicultural identity. The study utilized rich qualitative data to paint a clear and descriptive picture of the internal process of biculturalism within eight Mexican American college students. Ultimately, the data analysis aimed to collect and reflect their voices and the stories. This was done through three distinct data methods that complemented each other: interviews (oral), photo elicitation (visual), and document analysis (written). Results indicate that, the way bicultural individuals organize and respond to their culture in terms of behavior and cognition, is independent from the feelings they experience while engaging in cultural frame switching. No matter how well the participants are able to organize their dual cultures and compartmentalize them in their life, they still struggle with conflicting and opposing feelings. Nonetheless, even though their cultures and ideologies can clash at times and feel contradictory, this young generation can still manage to respond and function in both cultures, but to varying degrees.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is a linguistic ethnography of a high school Astronomy/Oceanography classroom in southern Arizona, where an exceptionally promising, novice, white science teacher and mostly Mexican-American students confronted issues of identity and difference through interactions both related and unrelated to science learning. Through close analysis of video-recorded, naturally-occurring interaction and rich ethnographic description, the study documents how a teacher and students accomplished everyday classroom life, built caring relationships, and pursued scientific inquiry at a time and in a place where nationally- and locally-circulating discourses about immigration and race infused even routine interactions with tension and uncertainty. In their talk, students appropriated elements of racializing discourses, but also used language creatively to "speak back" to commonsense notions about Mexicanness. Careful examination of science-related interactions reveals the participants' negotiation of multiple, intersecting forms of citizenship (i.e., cultural and scientific citizenship) in the classroom, through multidirectional processes of language socialization in which students and the teacher regularly exchanged expert and novice roles. This study offers insight into the continuing relevance of racial, cultural, and linguistic identity to students' experiences of schooling, and sheds new light on classroom discourse, teacher-student relationships, and dimensions of citizenship in science learning, with important implications for teacher preparation and practice.

Abstract:

Thus, the author builds her main character s course/journey and she makes this showing its hard path of statement of an identity seen by the other members of the society as "different", "deviant", "pathological." For this research some theorists that discuss questions about gender and sexuality will support us, they are, them, namely: Butler (2008), Facco (2004), Zinani (2006), Louro (2008), Foucault (1979; 1997; 1998), and others who in one way or another discuss the subjects of gender and sexuality in the context of cultural studies.

Abstract:
Youth literature offers young boys and girls a space for recognition and differentiation, thus constituting an important vector of socialization and cultural identity development. Through the text-image combination, the reader forges his / her identity affiliation, and questions his / her representations of the Other and the world in its plurality. As is the case of the Moroccan society, the editions of the third millennium are characterized by a great cultural and linguistic diversity. Young people who were immersed in a foreign bookish culture during the last century could find in the new productions a reference point in relation to their social environment. However, the representations vehicled by the literature of youth engender several problems not only at the level of reception of these books and in the relationship of young Moroccans to reading because of the plurality, but also sometimes at the level of the discordance and incongruity that may exist between different cultural and economic approaches, and those that emerge - explicitly or implicitly - from the works and albums taken into consideration. By choosing to analyze a corpus belonging to the Moroccan youth literature and by privileging the categories - surely problematic - of cultural "identity" and "diversity", we wanted to place this object of study at the heart of a society where the legacy of the past cohabit side by side with modern space-world, where linguistic wealth and cultural abundance are sources of fruitful questions but which also sometimes struggle to find an answer

Abstract:
Through increasing immigration, the U.S. society is becoming more linguistically and culturally diverse. Yet, as many U.S. language minority groups seek to assimilate, they face many challenges. One challenge is that their home language does not match the dominant language, English, that their children are learning at school. For Korean communities, maintaining Korean language presents a problem for families, especially for the mothers and children. The purpose of this study was to explore the U.S. Korean immigrant mothers' and children's perceptions of and experience with maintaining the Korean language and the effect that has on the development of social capital and cultural identity. I conducted two focus groups--one with mothers, another with their children, using a semi-structured interview protocol. I used narrative inquiry as my qualitative approach and then used thematic analysis to summarize my findings. I identified four major themes: (a) use of Korean language: positive and negative experiences, (b) perspectives on Korean language maintenance: benefits and limitations, (c) effect of parental involvement: provision of social capital, and (d) value of cultural identity formation: acculturation and the reality of learning Korean. This study revealed that parental support for children's heritage language retention seems to have an effect on language maintenance. Thus, because of this seemingly strong relationship, there seem to be significant benefits for children, families, and the overall society when the U.S. educators and other Korean immigrant parents strongly encourage American-born Korean youth to maintain their mother tongue in the U.S.

The research developed sought to contextualize the conceptions of this musical style from the historical construction of Brazilian Popular Music, its characteristics and main representatives, then it has made a proper cut of what is Brazilian rural music in the country. In this attempt, based on a perspective of cultural studies, with notes which aimed at examining the identity and memory of the backland person, as well as analyzing the construction of the imagery of the man from the backland and the voice represented in the songs that are established through social and cultural conceptions. Based on theoretical assumptions, such as Andrade (2006, 2015), Bourdieu (1989), Bloch (1995),Caldas (1987), Candido (1977, 2010), Hall (1992, 2003, 2016), Halbwachs (2013), Le Goff (1990, 1992) Mariz (2005), Nepomuceno (1999), Patlagean (1992), Pesavento (2007), Peter Burke (2000, 2010), Ricouer (2007), Romildo Sant’Anna (2000), Tinhorão (2010), Woodward (2000) among others, it is opted for a discursive-literary analysis of Brazilian rural music from the roots and its different thematic approaches and differentiated in a broad and productive universe. Thus, it is intended to trace the identity and cultural formation of rural man, as well as presenting the faces of the backland, from the backland man by the perspective of the countryside and the city, addressing the theme of nostalgia in rural music. Besides these aspects, it will be approached the construction of memory and imaginary of the backland man, pointing out some rural stories that problematize the love and its varied conceptions, as well as misogynistic discursive representations in the analised genre. In this sense, it will be presented songs such as Chico Mineiro (Tonico e Francisco Ribeiro), Franguinho na Panela (Moacyr dos Santos e Paraíso), O doutor e o caipira (Goiano e Geraldinho), Saudade de minha terra (Goiá), Saco de Ouro (Paraíso e José Caetano Erba) and others that will be highlighted the elements described directly in the lyrics of the songs by composers and diversified pairs without a space-time presupposition or clipping, punctuating the transformations and modifications that music, as a form of communication, causes in the sociocultural context and also the aspects of identity, imaginary and memory.

Abstract:
The main objective of this research is to study how academic trajectories of identity are co-constructed and negotiated among teenagers in project-based classrooms. During an academic year, we have followed a group of high school students that attend a highly linguistically and culturally diverse school in the metropolitan area of Barcelona that implements project-based learning. By analysing students’ group interactions, we have investigated both the roles and positioning that students assumed themselves and assigned to others and the relationships established among the members of the groups. We used qualitative research methods including interviews to students and teachers, audio recording of group interactions and classroom observation- to triangulate the data we gathered. We present five case studies that represent different trajectories of academic identity depending on changes observed during the academic year.

The aim of this research was to understand the relationship between the Brazilian and Portuguese varieties and cultures in contact situations in Portuguese context, as well as to describe how these dimensions influenced the (re) construction of the Brazilian students participating in the research. Thus, a reading of the situation of contact between the two linguistic groups, speaking of Brazilian Portuguese (PB) and speakers of European Portuguese (PE), was made, showing the lexical- cultural approximations and differences between the two varieties that emerge from the situations experiences during contact. The core of this analysis is based on studies conducted by Bauman (2005), Hall (2011), Labov (2008) and Perini (2004) on language / culture / variation trichotomy and the relationship that keeps them linked to the subject in the readaptation process or construction of identity within the sociolinguistic view, and in other texts that were pertinent to the development of this research. The constitution of the corpus was based on the answers, in writing, provided by nine participants to the questions asked through questionnaires. The questionnaire consisted of twenty-two questions, which relate to the lexical variations of PB in contact with the EP, so as to highlight the most striking aspects of Brazilian culture and linguistic identity in a European context. The results of this research point out that the conflicts generated by the contact between theparticipants of the research with the EP are supported by linguistic, historical and cultural aspects that constitute the Brazilian and Portuguese communities, as well as the difficulty of some Portuguese in accepting the Brazilian variety as correct. The Brazilian linguistic identity was a constant hard all contact, because the results evidenced the occurrence of a possible adaptation to the situation of contact, by the participants of the research, as opposed to the disentangling of the Brazilian identity. However, the use of this system denounces the subject as an individual and / or collectivity socially situated in a specific group whose cultural and linguistic identity is soon perceived. Culture, identity and lexical variation constitute a process of self-affirmation of the subject in situations of contact with other groups. However, each variety occupies a very well defined position and therefore the differences of one in relation to another exist and are justified in the socio-historical constitution of each Portuguese-speaking community. As a contribution, this research will serve as a basis for the authorities to think better about the proposals and the educational policies that support the development of educational programs that aim at the training of undergraduate students abroad, as well as contribute with the existing studies that say respect the lexical-cultural variation between varieties of LP and to promote new studies related to the areas related to the thematic of this study.

This dissertation analyzes the oratory of students of the first semester of the Bachelor of Arts, at Universidade Federal de Pelotas, based on the questioning: which positions of subject are taken in class in a moment of evaluation in which the youths are summoned to speak?, and based on those positions taken, how are the pupils subjectivized and build certain identity speeches for themselves? Besides that, this study aims to analyze such oratory, in a sense of understanding them as a pedagogical activity which allows the occupation of certain subject positions – the process of identity constitution – and understand the classroom as a privileged place where complex speeches circulate, and, therefore, they constitute social subjects. For analysis purposes, the theoretical framework is supported by the Cultural Studies (CS) and by the Transdisciplinary Applied Linguistics (TAL), specifically regarding identity issues. From the perspective of Cultural Studies, it is possible to analyze the representations and identity based on the speeches, since language is understood as a constructor of identity. The Transdisciplinary Applied Linguistics, in turn, meets the identity issues, as regards the social subject to be built by the senses produced from the uses and social, political and economic implications. The main theoretical assumptions, which understand the language as constitutor of meanings, were based on authors such as Fabrício (2006), Hall (1997a), Moita-Lopes (2001, 2006a), among others. Regarding discussions that involve the questions of identity and representation, authors like Hall (1997b, 2000, 2011), Silva (1995b, 2000a, 2000b), Woodward (2000), among others were used. Therefore, as a principle, the fact that the language serves as a mechanism which plays a key role in the construction and movement of meaning, this research aims to understand the classroom as a place in which there is, besides the process teaching/learning, the production of identity. Based on the analysis, it is concluded that the students are subjectivized and build identities, occupying positions of subject in the classroom. The positions, for example, a subject concerned with issues that include respect, dignity and equality, as well as a critical subject, politically aware and knowledgeable were filled not only at the time of speaking, but also in the discussion after each presentation, in which students were positioned and constituted while social subjects that were meaningful to themselves and to the world.

More specifically, this research identifies and analyzes both language and cultural domains within the community in order to establish a sociolinguistic profile of the group. Ethnographic theory was the basis for data collection as well as for identification and analysis of the group's main cultural domains, which were evidenced in participants speeches during interviews and social interactions. Language domains were gathered through interviews, questionnaires and field observations. The theoretical section includes works on language and its influence on society (BAKER, 1993; GROSJEAN, 1982; ROMAINE, 1995), conceptions of culture in various areas of study, such as anthropology, sociology and ethnography (LARAIA, 2007; SPRADLEY, 1980; VILA NOVA, 1985), and identity and difference as social products (HALL, 2007; SANTOS, 2007; WOODWARD, 2007). Results revealed that both languages are used in the community, although English is the predominant language in most social domains. Portuguese is used within the family domain in cases of interracial marriage and during social interactions outside the community. English, in turn, is present in the other domains such as the church, the neighborhood, the school and work inside the community. Shortly, English is seen by most participants as the link that connects them to their native country while Portuguese is seen as an instrument to gain access to job and higher education. Results also revealed that faith, conversion and testimony are prominent cultural domains in the participants cultural horizons as well as a varied range of stereotypes about the American and the Brazilian cultures.

This thesis aims to develop the study of a new cultural politics and new cultural practices based on a critical dialog between José Saramago and the interculturalism theory, which play a political posture that occupies itself with the cultural interchanges and with the formation of participating partnership. The interculturalism circulates among distinct theoretical positions to debate our cultural inheritance, tracing an analysis that comprises a more combating revision theory of the origins of the current social and cultural hierarchies and a more conciliating theory that emphasizes the hybridization cultural process and detaches a necessity of working different cultures and different cultural subjects. The intercultural politics answers to a necessity of the modern cultural formations, whose cultural hybridism, associated to the incessant goods and people exchanges, conducts to the creation of new partnerships from negotiating politics. To think the concept as social praxis, it will be utilized The raft of stone (A jangada de pedra), The cave (A caverna), Essay about the blindness (Ensaio sobre a cegueira) e Essay about the lucidity (Ensaio sobre a lucidez), by José Saramago. In this reading, it will be brought out the traveler’s and narrator’s metaphorical performance as representations of intercultural practices in the national and international contexts, overland or overseas. The two figures will contribute to discuss the cultural identitary discourse from the intersections between the displacement and the fixity, the universalism and the particularism, the foreigner and the familiar, the alterity and the identity. Therefore, the interculturalism searches the traveler its dynamism and flexibility to be adapted and to assimilate the novelty and the narrator its capability for compiling such information and cultural realizations with the tradition, with the local knowledge, with the interior and the familiar, it means, both contribute to the creation of more floated cultural spaces in which the principle of negotiation and hospitality may be present. Finally, the intercultural politics detaches the importance of encouraging the subject’s active participation over its cultural properties and values, in order to contest the use of cultural politics that provoke alienation and dependence and that, consequently, continue to produce registers of unequal cultural relations and inospitalities. For that, at the same time that the subject should be supported by rights, should be equally followed by duties, words that complement themselves to translate the meanings of justice and dignity for the humans-cultures relation.

The journalistnarrator of the novel tells a history about something he did not experienced: the suicide of the American anthropologist Buell Halvor Quain. Hence, the journalist searches for memories such as letters, photographs and reports of people lived with Quain in order to solve the referred suicide. In another narrative instance, we read a will let by a character that met Buell Quain in Brazil: Manoel Perna. My research hypothesis was about the entanglement between the narrators from diferents sociohistorical times should make clear diferents cultural identities and, consenquently, identifications to one cultural identity and not with another. Concerning to my research, I have demarcated as goals: i. Demostrating the memories and identity functioning in NN; ii. Contrasting and analysing the narratives instances; iii. Verifying cultural questions for the NN’s narrative structure. To explain these memories, I have based this study mainly in the Discurso da narrativa, from Gérard Genette (1995). The memories of the novel brings inside them other voices responsible for fragmenting the chronological narrative order and allow me to read the book by relating it to identity questions. Therefore, I have referred the narrator’s voices to their sociocultural point of view. Due to that, cultural studies were the basis of this Masters dissertation: A identidade cultural na pós-modernidade, Da diáspora (2003) and Who needs identity (2003), all written by Stuart Hall. These references were the main theoretical basis used in order to understand identities through narrative structures. This theoretical and analytical process support me to demostrate the identification as a nonexplicit game inside the memory narration from NN.

This dissertation proposes to discuss the differences in the representation of homosexual relationships, concerning the narratives Duas iguais by Cíntia Moscovich and "Terça-Feira Gorda” and “Aqueles dois” by Caio Fernando Abreu. Therefore, this reflection is based on the queer theory concepts, under the light of cultural studies in order to understand the social, historical and cultural factors that affect such representations. From this perspective, issues concerning gender and identity constructions will be iscussed to analyze the literary discourses proposed by these authors. Thus, studies on Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, Stuart Hall and David William Foster will be used as a theoretical basis to reinforce the hypotheses. In line with the arguments discussed, the relationship between literature and society is relevant to support the analysis of homosexuality in the literary context. Moreover, Antonio Candido’s body of work is essential to articulate the research.
